In this aerial view, former U.S. President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate is seen on September 14, 2022 in Palm Beach, Florida.

  • Legal analysts criticized a judge's ruling on the FBI's Mar-a-Lago probe.
  • The judge refused a request by the FBI to resume inspecting classified information retrieved there.
  • They say the judge's claim the classified status of the documents is uncertain is baseless.

Legal analysts responded harshly to a federal judge's ruling denying an FBI request to resume inspecting classified information retrieved from former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort.

The  judge, Aileen Cannon, in the ruling said she did not accept the Justice Department's claim: that about 100 records it wants access to are highly classified and contain information that could imperil US national security.

Cannon was appointed by Trump and confirmed by the Senate in 2020. Her previous rulings in the case have also drawn accusations of pro-Trump bias.

Cannon stood by her previous ruling that an independent official, or special master, should review the documents to establish if this is the case.

The ruling stunned some legal experts, who said Trump had offered no evidence in court disputing the classified status of the records. He has claimed in interviews that he broadly declassified the records, but his lawyers notably have not repeated that argument in court.

Ryan Goodman, a former Defense Department special counsel, picked apart her claim that there are "ongoing factual and legal disputes" over the status of the documents.

"What factual dispute? Trump never asserted he declassified the docs," he wrote.

Former Deputy Assistant Attorney General Harry Litman described the ruling as "bizarre" and "atrocious" in an interview on CNN Thursday.

He said the ruling was "atrocious, aberrant, because the Justice Department said, 'We just wanna look at these 100 classified documents.' That's what was immediately before her.

"The only thing Trump said in response is, 'Classified? Who says they're classified?' Oh, except the government. How does something become classified? Because the government, the official authority classified."

National security attorney Mark Zaid echoed those concerns, saying Cannon had been oddly dismissive of the FBI's security concerns.

"I have never seen a federal judge disregard Executive Branch classification concerns to such an extent as Judge Cannon did tonight," he tweeted.

Andrew Weissman, one of the lead prosecutors on Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, was incredulous at the decision.

"Judge Cannon is a partisan hack: she says it is "disputed" that the documents are classified, but Trump never said in court he declassified them and submitted NO evidence, so the only evidence before her is that they are and are so marked. She really is totally in the tank here," he tweeted.

The FBI in its August 8 search of Mar-a-Lago retrieved stashes of government records, including highly classified information, which officials believe Trump wrongly took with him after leaving office.

The DOJ in a recent court filing submitted a picture showing folders of records with clear "classified" markings that had been retrieved in Mar-a-Lago from a box that also contained old Time magazine covers featuring Trump.

The FBI has argued that without access to the documents it can't properly establish the potential national risks that the lax storage of the documents created.

Trump's lawyers have argued that some of the documents are protected under executive privilege rules meant to shield some private presidential communications from scrutiny by Congress or courts.

Cannon appointed a special master, named Thursday as Judge Raymond Dearie, partly to screen the documents for information that falls in this category.

But classified information, and records from government agencies, cannot be shielded under privilege rules. And, as analysts pointed out Thursday, Trump had offered no arguments in court disputing the classified status of the documents.

Trump has offered a range of other arguments not repeated by his lawyers in response to the raid, claiming the FBI is politically persecuting him, and claiming without evidence that agents planted evidence during the search.

The DOJ is likely to appeal Cannon's ruling.

BRITS 2019: Hugh Jackman sings The Greatest Showman on UK Tour in May: Tickets and info https://briefnews.eu/brits-2019-hugh-jackman-sings-the-greatest-showman-on-uk-tour-in-may-tickets-and-info/ https://briefnews.eu/brits-2019-hugh-jackman-sings-the-greatest-showman-on-uk-tour-in-may-tickets-and-info/#respond Wed, 20 Feb 2019 21:12:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/brits-2019-hugh-jackman-sings-the-greatest-showman-on-uk-tour-in-may-tickets-and-info/

The biggest night in UK music opened in grand style with the biggest star from the biggest musical movie on top a mountain of red jackets. It may be a ceremony to celebrate pop music, but the Greatest Showman soundtrack has dominated music charts around the world throughout 2018. Jackman performed The Greatest Show, just one of his numbers from the smash-hit movie. British fans will have another chance to see him do all this and much more when he returns to the O2 Arena plus major shows in Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester in just a few months.

Hugh Jackman – The Man. The Music. The Show. Tour (yes, that is the rather dramatic way it is punctuated) will see the Tony Award-winning musicals legend take to the stage in Manchester, Birmingham and London in May 2019.

He will be accompanied by a live orchestra and give fans exactly what they want with a roof-raising array of songs from The Greatest Showmen, as well as his other huge box office musical smash, Les Miserables.

Fans should probably expect a tune or two from Oklahoma. Jackman made his UK musicals debut in the classic show back in 1998.

It was the moment he was introduced to the world as a budding star of stage AND screen.

The talented star also won a Tony Award in 2004 for his lead role in The Boy From Oz, the musical based on the life and music of Peter Allen.

Among many other recordings, Jackman performed on the soundtrack for animated film Happy Feet.

Hello and welcome to Express Sport’s live coverage of 232 as Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson go toe-to-toe for the light-heavyweight title.

Jones enters the back of a devastating third-round KO victory over his bitter rival Daniel Cormier, though that result was overturned to a no contest after it emerged he failed a drug test ahead of the bout.

Express Sport will bring you all the action and reaction from the Los Angeles Forum this morning in what promises to be a thoroughly entertaining card.

Jones and Gustafsson are expected to make their respective walks to the Octagon at around 5:30am BST time, but there are several other fights on the card worth watching.

Jones vs Gustafsson 2 Live – 00:25 – Uriah Hall def Bevon Lewis via KO (punch), Round 3, 1:32

Uriah Hall returns to the win column in emphatic fashion.

Hall was being dominated by Lewis from the outset and seemed afraid to trade heavy leather.

But the New Yorker turned things around in the third round with a third round with a vicious counter right hand that separated Lewis from consciousness.

Jones vs Gustafsson 2 Live – 00:15 – Middleweights are currently on deck

A middleweight bout between Ultimate Fighter alumni Uriah Hall and Bevon Lewis is currently ongoing.

The dangerous Hall comes into the bout on the back of a stoppage loss to Paulo Costa at UFC 226.

Lewis, meanwhile, comes into the contest fresh off a first-round TKO victory over Alton Cunningham on season two of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series.

Jones vs Gustafsson 2 Live – 00:02 – Curtis Millender def Siyar Bahadurzada via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

Curtis Millender continued his good run in the UFC in the second bout of the evening, edging the dangerous Siyar Bahadurzada.

Bahadurzada started the contest well but began to fade in the second and was well and truly outstruck in the third.

Millender has now set his sights on fighting Mike Perry next, who he dubbed ‘Michelle Perry’.

Jones vs Gustafsson 2 Live – 23:28 – Montel Jackson def Brian Kelleher via submission (D’Arce Choke) – Round 1, 1:40

The first fight of the evening didn’t last long at all, folks.

Dana White Looking For A Fight alumni Montel Jackson made light work of the tough Brian Kelleher, defeating choking him out with a D’Arce choke in less than two minutes.

Let’s hope the rest of tonight’s fights continue in the manner.

Tom Hiddleston Betrayal theatre dates: When are tickets on sale? Plus ADVANCE booking info https://briefnews.eu/tom-hiddleston-betrayal-theatre-dates-when-are-tickets-on-sale-plus-advance-booking-info/ https://briefnews.eu/tom-hiddleston-betrayal-theatre-dates-when-are-tickets-on-sale-plus-advance-booking-info/#respond Thu, 15 Nov 2018 20:22:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tom-hiddleston-betrayal-theatre-dates-when-are-tickets-on-sale-plus-advance-booking-info/

Next Spring will be a bumper few months for Hiddlestoners. The actor will be returning as Loki in Avengers 4, even though he was killed off in Infinity War. He has already filmed scenes but nobody knows if they are flashbacks or the popular anti-hero will be brought back to life. Fans, though, will able to see the actor very much alive and in the flesh for three months only, in a limited run of the iconic Harold Pinter play Betrayal. The news broke today, as well as information on how and when to buy tickets.

When the announcement was made, Hiddleston said: “Betrayal is a masterpiece. Jamie Lloyd’s Pinter at the Pinter season is terrific and I am so pleased that he’s asked me to be part of it.”

The Avengers star will take the main role of Robert in the 1978 play and started a fan frenzy when he posted a cryptic video earlier which showed him in fine dramatic form walking down a dark tunnel looking upset and emotional. At the time, nothing more was revealed apart from the word “Betrayal” across the screen.

Now fans know it was teasing his new play, there will doubtless be a scramble for tickets when they are released.

Watch the video next and scroll down for dates, booking information and more.

WHEN WILL BETRAYAL START?

Director Jamie Lloyd’s new production will open at the Harold Pinter Theatre on March 5 2019, for a strictly limited season ending on June 1.

WHAT IS BETRAYAL ABOUT?

The play tells the passionate and heart-breaking story of a relationship in reverse order. It starts in the present and works backwards, allowing the audience a poignant and bittersweet experience as they watch scenes already knowing the outcome. It is on Pinter’s own seven-year relationship with TV presenter Joan Bakewell.

WHY IS BETRAYAL BEING REVIVED IN 2019?

The original production debuted 40 years ago today, starring Michael Gambon and Penelope Wilton in the lead roles. The new production marks the end of ‘Pinter at the Pinter’ season, which celebrates the 10th anniversary of the playwright’s death on December 24, 2008.

WHEN DO TICKETS GO ON SALE?

Tickets go on sale at 9am on November 30.

Priority advances tickets go on sale to all previous The Jamie Lloyd Company ticket bookers, ATG Theatre Card members and Pinter at the Pinter ticket holders at 9am on November 29.

NBC reveals it sat on discrediting info about Kavanaugh ‘witness’ https://briefnews.eu/nbc-reveals-it-sat-on-discrediting-info-about-kavanaugh-witness/ https://briefnews.eu/nbc-reveals-it-sat-on-discrediting-info-about-kavanaugh-witness/#respond Sat, 27 Oct 2018 01:03:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nbc-reveals-it-sat-on-discrediting-info-about-kavanaugh-witness/ As the US Justice Department prepares to investigate media-hound attorney Michael Avenatti and Kavanaugh “victim” Julie Swetnick for making false accusations, NBC admitted they knew Swetnick’s story was falling apart weeks ago.

More than three weeks after an NBC interview where Kavanaugh accuser #3 Julie Swetnick contradicted the sworn affidavit she gave Avenatti, the network is publishing text and phone exchanges with a supporting “witness.” Recorded around the time of Swetnick’s interview, the second woman appears to tell two different stories when Avenatti is around and when he isn’t.

Attorney Michael Avenatti © Andrew Cullen / Reuters

The supposed witness signed an affidavit, made public by Avenatti on October 3, describing in no uncertain terms how she saw a young Brett Kavanaugh (now a US Supreme Court Justice) spike the drinks of girls at student parties so that they could then be gang-raped. When questioned by NBC, however, she said she hadn’t actually witnessed it, and Avenatti had grossly misrepresented her words in the document she had only “skimmed” before signing.

NBC then spoke to Avenatti, who had provided the second woman’s contact information in the first place, to try to straighten out the stories, but the plot only thickened. The hot-tempered lawyer expressed his “disgust” with the outlet and at one point said “on background, it’s not the same woman. What are you going to do with that?“

They then reached out to the “witness” again, and she backed Avenatti and the affidavit – only to insist in a phone call minutes later that she never saw Kavanaugh do anything and she wouldn’t speak to Avenatti anymore.

Swetnick’s own early-October interview to NBC revealed a story that markedly diverged from her written narrative. Questioned on camera, she could no longer be certain that Kavanaugh was among the boys who supposedly gang-raped her, or that he had spiked the punch at the party. It later emerged during the FBI investigation of her claims that Swetnick had a history of making false accusations of sexual misconduct.

Earlier this week, Judiciary Committee chair Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) referred Avenatti and Swetnick to the Justice Department to be investigated for conspiracy to defraud, making false statements to federal officials, and obstructing a federal investigation.

McGregor vs Khabib Live

McGregor vs Khabib Live: Conor McGregor will take on Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 (Image: GETTY)

Conor McGregor returns to UFC for the first time in nearly two years early this morning.

McGregor faces the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC Lightweight title in the main event of UFC 229, which takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Khabib holds the UFC’s and mixed martial arts’ longest undefeated record of 26 wins in a row, 10 of which have gone the distance.

Hello and welcome to Express Sport’s coverage of 229 as Conor McGregor returns to the Octagon for the first time since 2016.

The Irishman takes on Khabib Nurmagomedov, the UFC Lightweight champion, as he looks to get his hands on the belt once more.

Express Sport will bring you all the action from Las Vegas through the evening in what could be the most explosive night of UFC action ever.

McGregor and Khabib are due in the Octagon at around 5.30am UK time, but there are plenty of other interesting fights in the build up.

McGregor vs Khabib Live – 2:16am

Despite the T-Mobile nearly being full, there isn’t much of a raucous atmosphere amongst the crowd.

That’s very surprising given how boisterous the fans, all 10,000 plus of them, were at yesterday’s weigh-ins.

The atmosphere will no doubt pick up when the main card gets underway, which is less than 30 minutes away.

But before that, an entertaining men’s flyweight bout between Jussier Formiga and Sergio Pettis, the brother of former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis.

McGregor vs Khabib Live result: Vicente Luque def Jalin Taylor via KO, (punches) Round 1, 3:52 – 2:05am

Jalin Taylor’s venture to the welterweight division didn’t go as he would’ve expected.

The Dana White Looking For A Fight contestant took on the dangerous Vicente Luque in his maiden outing in the 170lbs division.

And it ended in less than four minutes as Luque put his lights out with some nasty ground-and-pound after catching him coming with a big right hand and sending hurtling to the canvas.

McGregor vs Khabib Live result – Aspen Ladd def Tonya Evinger via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 3:20 – 01:43

Aspen Ladd struggled to make the bantamweight limit yesterday morning, but it didn’t seem that her adverse weight cut had a detrimental effect on her.

The 23-year-old dominated Tonya Evinger from the get-go, tagging her with multiple right hands from outside of the pocket.

And when the contest hit the mat, Ladd made sure not to give the veteran a chance to get back in the game, obliterating her with punches from back mount which caused the referee to jump in and halt the fight.

McGregor vs Khabib live result: Scott Holtzman def Alan Patrick via KO (elbows) – Round 3, 3:42 – 1:27am

Scott Holtzman versus Alan Patrick provided one of the nastiest finishes of the year.

The stoppage came with a little over a minute of the third round left on the clock and with Holtzman in full mount position.

And after managing to create some distance for a split second, he unleashed three vicious elbows that rendered the charismatic Patrick unconscious.

McGregor vs Khabib live – 1:17am

As you’re well aware of, McGregor’s last venture into the Octagon took place nearly two years ago in the main event of UFC 205.

That card saw the Irishman bring about the end of Eddie Alvarez’s reign as lightweight king with an emphatic second-round TKO victory, a triumph which saw him become the promotion’s first simultaneous two-weight world champion.

But will he be able to inflict a similar defeat on the undefeated Nurmagomedov? That question will be answered in a matter of hours.

McGregor vs Khabib Live – 1:07am

The atmosphere is slowly but surely building at the T-Mobile, with fans entering in their droves.

Unsurprisingly, every time a McGregor promo comes on, the largely Irish crowd goes wild.

It won’t be long until they see their hero in action.

McGregor vs Khabib Live  Result: Yana Kunitskaya def Lina Lansberg via unanimous decision  0:53am

A battle of Europe took place in the third fight of the evening, which featured Sweden’s Lina Lansberg and Russia’s Yana Kunitskaya

Both women were very evenly matched, but Kunitskaya edged the contest with her grappling.

Not only did the contest feature two of the best fighters in the women’s bantamweight division, it was a showdown of two women who recently fought women’s featherweight queen Cris Cyborg.

McGregor vs Khabib live result: Nik Lentz def Gray Maynard via TKO (punches) – Round 2, 1:19 – 0:20am

Former lightweight standout Gray Maynard made his return to the 155lbs division in the second fight of the evening, in which he took on UFC veteran Nick Lentz.

Lentz dominated from the outset, hurting the former title challenge with his overhand right.

And early in the third, he faked the punch and came over the top with a big head kick which felled the durable Maynard and closed the show with some well-placed ground-and-pound before the referee called a halt to proceedings.

McGregor vs Khabib live result: Tony Martin def Ryan LaFlare via KO (head kick and punches) – Round 3, 1:05 – 11:50pm

Welterweight Ryan LaFlare and Tony Martin kicked things off at the T-Mobile, and the pair didn’t disappoint.

After a somewhat lackluster first round, the fight exploded into life midway through the second when Martin sent LaFlare crashing to the canvas.

La Flare managed to weather the storm and made it to the third round, though moment after the restart Martin finished him off with a vicious head kick and ground-and-pound.

17 Note-Taking Tips That Will Transform How You Retain Info https://briefnews.eu/17-note-taking-tips-that-will-transform-how-you-retain-info/ https://briefnews.eu/17-note-taking-tips-that-will-transform-how-you-retain-info/#respond Tue, 21 Aug 2018 04:05:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/17-note-taking-tips-that-will-transform-how-you-retain-info/ How many times have you listened to a presenter and forgotten what they said moments after the presentation?Learning is important for our growth. We should take advantage of the opportunities we have to hear from experts. If you can’t remember what they say afterwards, then it’s time to start improving your note taking.Note taking is an art that takes practice and discipline. It certainly isn’t easy when a flood of information is coming towards you and you have to decipher what’s important to write down and what’s not. This list of 17 note taking tips will help you in any class, presentation, or meeting:

READ MORE: How to Take Study Notes: 5 Effective Note Taking Methods and Essential Tips

1. Determine important content

Note taking should never be a transcript of every word said, but rather a summary of important information and questions. If you’re going into a history class, you’ll want to remember names and dates especially. If a coworker is doing a training on SEO, you’ll want to pay more attention to terminology and recommended practices.Anticipate before any presentation, meeting, or class what kind of content will be important to remember later.

2. Eliminate distractions

Remember when your teacher turned off your phone in class? That might still be a good idea.Whatever you find unnecessarily steals your attention during presentations needs to be eliminated as a distraction. If you are taking notes on a digital device, close any unrelated applications or resources. If you know that Hank from accounting is going to talk to you a lot, maybe you sit next to someone else. The point is to keep all of your attention focused on the subject material and note taking.

3. Keep calm

If you’re too nervous about note taking, you’ll probably make mistakes. Understand that your notes probably won’t be perfect every time, but you can always get help and clarification later.Note taking is difficult, so acknowledge your mistakes and improve on them.

4. Go digital

Use an app, online tool, or software. Note taking apps are available for your laptop, tablet, or phone. They make it easy to take fast notes and add things such as photos, links, checklists, and locations. If you feel like your handwriting is hard to read later, typing your notes will fix that. If you find yourself madly erasing after not organizing your notes correctly, than being able to copy-paste or hit control-Z can save you lots of valuable time.

5. Start sketching

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Many people understand concepts better in a visual context.Try sketching some drawings to go around the notes you write. It can quickly jog your memory about what you were thinking and makes your notes more entertaining to go through later.Just don’t get carried away and miss the important stuff. You will still want to combine drawings with plenty of actual words.

6. Make something visual

Take your notes and organize them visually. If drawing isn’t your thing, you can still add some flair to your notes. Use something like microsoft publisher to inject some creativity into your notes.Imagine your flyer is going to be used to teach someone else as you create it. This method forces you to spend more time with the content and can help organize it in such a way that makes more sense to you.

7. Mapping method

The mapping method of note taking is based on diagramming your notes. It looks like a flowchart or a spider’s web between topics and subtopics. It’s a nice way to visually organize your notes that may be interconnected. Here’s a more detailed guide on how to do mind mapping:How to Use a Mind Map to Organize Your Life

8. Cornell note taking method

The Cornell method is a great approach for organizing your notes into easily reviewable sections.((Oxford Learning: How to Take Study Notes: 5 Effective Note Taking Methods))You draw a line a couple inches from the bottom and then another line a couple inches from the left side, to create three boxes. The largest section you use to take notes however you’d like. The smaller left portion is for short cues to remind you what to specifically study later. The bottom section is where you write a summary of what you learned.

9. Outline method

The outline method turns your notes into easily digestible bullet points.((GoodNotes: The Best Note-Taking Methods))Write them like you’re outlining a story. You’ll have main points from individual topics or subjects, then write bullet points underneath each one with the supporting information.

10. Charting method

With the charting method, you will make a table with categories to be filled out.((Classroom: How to Take Notes Using the Charting Method)) This is fantastic for organizing material that you know will follow a particular outline. For example, if you are learning about different types of animals, you can make columns about where each animal lives, what does it eat, and how long it typically lives. Each row would have a different animal and you simply go across your columns and answer each question.

11. Sentence method

Write down important points from the lecture in a basic sentence structure. You can add headers and separate your sentences into their own lines to help keep organization. This works especially well for writing down useful quotes or statistics.

12. Record it

If you worry about missing important details or find yourself a better studier by listening, then you should record the presentation or class.Use your phone’s recording system or get software that automatically transcribes what’s being said. There are technical limitations with transcription software, so you may need to watch it carefully to correct any mistakes.

13. Ask for clarification

Your notes are close to worthless if you don’t understand them while writing them. Make sure to ask the teacher or presenter any questions you may have. Chances are someone else will be grateful that you asked about the same thing they were confused about.Take courage and work hard to understand the concepts the first time around so that you’re not even more confused later on.

14. Summarize afterwards

After a class, presentation or meeting, write down a summary of what the key points were. This is important for memory retention of the subject material and to see if you have any lingering questions to be addressed.Good summaries should include not only the key points, but also further applications to the subject material, questions to be researched, and a list of tasks to be completed.

15. Continue the discussion

Once you’re done with listening and note taking, turn to someone nearby and talk with them about what you learned. You can ask them questions about what stood out to them or what changes they would like to make based on the material. You can ask questions about things you perhaps misunderstood or did not receive a clear answer to.Continuing the discussion with someone else is an excellent way of applying the material and cementing it in your memory. If you have a meaningful conversation about it, that information has a much greater likelihood of being retained.

16. Review your notes

What you retain from the first time you take notes will quickly fade if you do not review them later. Hopefully, you have used one of the above methods to make your notes easy to go through and perhaps even entertaining. The important thing is that you take the time to go over your notes later so that you can remember what you learned and further reflect upon the points made.

17. Share what you learned

Even better than reviewing your notes is reviewing them with someone else. This gives you the opportunity to teach what you’ve learned.Use a flyer creator to creatively showcase what you’ve learned.((LucidPress: Flyer Maker)) Doing so will help you realize points you did not fully understand or need to better review.Your review partner may even come up with valuable questions for you to reflect upon and apply to your notes.

Final thoughts

Don’t be afraid to mix up some of these note taking methods together. You may find that a portion of your notes is better organizing in an outline format, but then decide that you need to make a chart for another portion. The point is to be organized and do what makes the most sense for you. Even if the person next to you is clearly organizing their notes according to the Cornell method, perhaps a different strategy will appeal to you more. Note taking is meant for yourself, so do it in whatever way is best for you.Now you have the chance to use what you have learned. Note taking is only valuable when it serves a purpose later. If you learn something interesting, come up with ways to apply it at work or in your home. Review your notes often to find different applications. Use the knowledge you have gained to make a difference in your life or the lives of others.

California mall owner’s license plate readers send info to ICE https://briefnews.eu/california-mall-owners-license-plate-readers-send-info-to-ice/ https://briefnews.eu/california-mall-owners-license-plate-readers-send-info-to-ice/#respond Wed, 11 Jul 2018 01:37:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/california-mall-owners-license-plate-readers-send-info-to-ice/

Some shopping malls in California are scanning license plates and sending that data to a surveillance vendor that works with — and sells information to — Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. That’s according to a report by tech watchdog group Electronic Frontier Foundation, which discovered that a regional real estate company operating retail centers across the western state is feeding visitor information into a nationwide database that ICE reportedly gained access to at the beginning of this year.

The Irvine Company has installed automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) at “one or more” of its shopping malls in the city, according to its privacy policy, which notes that the information collected is sent to Vigilant Solutions. That’s the company providing license plate recognition data to ICE, The Verge reported back in January. While The Irvine Company’s retail locations are probably providing only a fraction of the 2 billion license plate photos in Vigilant Solutions’ database, nobody was aware that their license plates — and ergo, their behavior patterns and location information — were being collected while shopping.

ICE isn’t the only customer buying Vigilant’s data: The company also shares it with up to 1,000 law enforcement agencies, the EFF’s report noted. Its sister company Digital Recognition Network also sells information collected by ALPRs to financial lenders, insurance companies and debt collectors. And as the watchdog group pointed out, the only reason we know about this connection is due to a 2015 California law requiring ALPR operators to disclose their policies online. In other words, who knows what other companies are feeding Vigilant Solutions your license plate data?
