Barbara Costello runs the TikTok account @brunchwithbabs.

  • Barbara Costello and her daughter run the TikTok account @brunchwithbabs.
  • She never expected to have so many followers and brand deals, but now she has an agent and cookbook.
  • She said you have to have a lot of passion if you want to succeed as an influencer.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Barbara "Babs" Costello, the 73-year-old TikToker who runs the account @brunchwithbabs. It has been edited for length and clarity.

During the pandemic, my daughter Liz was expecting, so I told her I'd hunker down at her house and help her out with my two grandsons. One afternoon, when the boys were napping, Liz said, "Mom, I think you should try TikTok."

Mind you, I wasn't on any social media. I have four children, eight grandchildren, and my gut reaction was immediately, "No, thank you." But Liz insisted I could teach people about cooking.

I come from an Italian-Lebanese background, and food in those cultures and my family was sacrosanct. But I don't have any professional training. Liz convinced me to try a recipe, a very simple meal, and post a video about it in April 2020. I thought it was one and done, but when I read the comments, I was amazed at the support I got from that one little video. It was a very uncertain time, and I, an older lady, was bringing some solace and peace to people who were watching.

I never in a million years imagined I'd get to 2 million followers on TikTok and 1.3 million on Instagram. I'd been retired from being a teacher for more than 10 years, and I never thought about followers when I posted that first video.

Our growth at the beginning was steady. Then, we had periods where it just went gangbusters. Now, if I go to the grocery store, people recognize me. We've struck a chord, clearly.

We post a lot of seasonal things

Liz and I work together a few days per week. We decide what to post together, using our years of being mothers and wives, and my years of being a grandmother and teacher, as inspiration. My daughter does all the editing and filming, but I'm often managing the actual account and even responding to comments.

We really just focus on creating feel-good content that comes naturally to us. This summer, we were doing a lot of videos on recipes that use fresh fruit, ice box cakes, and barbecuing. We try to cover what people might be looking to make that season.

Many comments I get say something like, "I was never very good in the kitchen and afraid to try new things, and you've given me that confidence. Seeing you do it looks like it's easy."

People also really love hacks. People are looking for shortcuts, so I try to give them things that I've learned throughout the years. And not only do I do recipes, but my account has also evolved into motherly advice. I have a little series I do called, "Did your mother ever tell you?" that's been received nicely. Then there's the "slice of peace" series, which is a little philosophy tidbit that I share. So I've kind of become a mother or grandmother figure to many people out there, which again, I never realized we would go in that direction.

A lot of companies reach out to us about brand deals

When I first started posting, people would be like, "Oh, I love that top" or, "That's such a cute pair of earrings." I was a Talbots shopper for years. Talbots was aware of that, and came to us and wanted to do a temporary partnership, which we did last summer for two months. Then, in early August, they said they had a larger proposal. Now, I'm their first-ever ambassador, and I've been working with Talbots for over a year.

It's really hard to last in this industry if you're in it for the money because it can take a very long time to get there. And between recipe ideas, grocery shopping, baking, cooking, clean-up, editing, and posting, it's a full-time job. We were doing it just for the joy we were spreading for 15 months, and then brands started slowly reaching out, and eventually things started picking up.

When we realized there were not enough hours in the day to handle dealing with brands, we knew we needed an agent. A few started reaching out, so we interviewed different agencies and decided on the one we felt most comfortable with.

We've said no to brands that we don't think are appropriate for our channel or dovetail with our philosophy: food, family, and things that make life easier for our followers. I've always bought Nellie's Eggs at the grocery store, and we're working with them this year. It was sort of out of the blue that they contacted our agent. I'm also an ambassador for Roth Cheese, a wonderful company from Wisconsin, and Laundress. These are really high-quality products that we're using and sharing with our followers.

When we work on a partnership, we never just make it "ad-y." We always try to connect it with a recipe or something that the viewer could eventually save or use.

I have a cookbook that came out in April

We got an email from DK publishers in spring 2021 that they would like to publish a cookbook from me, and I never in a million years thought about that. At my age and my schedule at that moment, I was hesitant as to the commitment. However, after a little back and forth, plus assurances from the publisher and my daughter's encouragement, I said, "OK, but it's got to be a different cookbook — it's not just going to be a chapter on appetizers, salads, entrees."

So we made it based on holidays. "Celebrate With Babs" starts with New Year's Day and ends with Christmas, and includes all the holidays we celebrate as a family in between, including Oktoberfest or Halloween. I share in the cookbook a lot of the recipes that I've had for many years.

We use all the money we make to invest in the business, but this year, for the first time, we're drawing a salary.

You have to be passionate about this, obviously

You can't share something that you're not convinced about. The more what you're doing resonates with people, the more the business end will grow.

For now, our goal is to continue to build a community we like to call our "extended family" by feeding them in more ways than one. We're also currently exploring other new long-term projects, including a licensing deal for a kitchen line.

Working out of a busy home with young kids is tough, and there are days I feel like many things are not working all at once. But this is also an amazing experience being shared by a mom and daughter, no matter the difficult days. You have to just stay positive and keep on doing what you love.

The concept of a brand hiring a popular personality to promote a product or service isn’t new, and brands know that celebrity endorsements can sell products. In the age of social media, however, brands are finding new ways to leverage popular figures as brand ambassadors, and these people aren’t necessarily famous actors, singers, or athletes.

7 creative ways to use influencer marketing in enterprise AI https://briefnews.eu/7-creative-ways-to-use-influencer-marketing-in-enterprise-ai/ https://briefnews.eu/7-creative-ways-to-use-influencer-marketing-in-enterprise-ai/#respond Sun, 08 Apr 2018 06:53:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/7-creative-ways-to-use-influencer-marketing-in-enterprise-ai/

The market for AI is so overhyped, virtually anybody looking for a fast buck can re-package an old abacus and sell it as a “machine learning” platform. Misinformed people buy the idea and the mounting frustration makes it extremely difficult for legitimate AI companies to get their message above the din. To successfully stand out in a crowded market, creative marketers have found it critical to create unconventional educational content and enlist the support of credible B2B influencers in their space.

In the ever-shifting AI solutions ecosystem, even expert-led and well-thought out marketing campaigns can — and often — fail. To reduce costs and save time, marketers of AI products need to learn at the onset, or as early as possible, exactly which specific method doesn’t deliver the results for their solutions. In addition to basic AI marketing techniques like gathering customer testimonials or offering technical education, other approaches such as content, influencer, and account-based marketing have proven to be another set of effective methods for showcasing and selling several unique business applications of AI.

To glean strategic and tactical insights on how to make such marketing techniques work in AI, I spoke to the CMOs of two top AI vendors — GumGum’s Ben Plomion and Nudge’s Jaxson Khan — who have successfully leveraged unique content and B2B influencer approaches to convince and convert their target audiences. GumGum applies patented image-recognition technologies to analyze, protect, and optimize brand messaging while Nudge probes all relevant communication data to generate actionable relationship intelligence.

1. Establish trust with credible advocates

For Jaxson Khan, content marketing for AI is not really about the volume of content but more about building “pillars of trust.” He explains:

“Because AI promises to be so powerful and sophisticated for our buyers, AI companies and those that want to demo AI solutions, have a pre-eminent responsibility to demonstrate trust. The primary way to demonstrate trust in B2B, especially for sales and marketing technology, is to galvanize and activate a community of influencers and advocates.”

Khan found that influencer marketing delivered the highest returns for Nudge and that organic traffic was more effective than paid ads, with 80 percent of inbound traffic driven by posts from influencers across Twitter, LinkedIn, and other channels.

2. Focus on your vertical, stay away from general AI

After executing a variety of content marketing initiatives, Khan concludes that it’s better to engage industry influencers via a few quality, highly targeted, and unique pieces than to cast a wider net using lots of content about AI in general.

“We used to write general AI content thinking we were keeping up an AI pipeline, but it would have been better not to do it at all,” he explains. “If you want to talk about AI or any popular technology trend, you need to be extremely specific and tactical and tie back to the vertical you’re working in. Otherwise, it’s not relevant for influencers.”

3. Don’t be afraid to be contrarian

Inspiring the right targeted conversations is no easy task. “The hardest part of creating great content is coming up with a great catchphrase,” Khan emphasizes. “You need a campaign people will resonate with and feel attached to. You also need content that influencers will care about and share.” One of the Nudge marketing team’s proven tactics is to champion a contrarian or counterintuitive view that goes against conventional wisdom.

“Hustle harder” is a conventional trope in sales, where salespeople are told that success comes from aggressively prioritizing quantity over quality. Khan’s team advocated the opposite opinion with their contrarian #holdthehustle campaign, which was one of their most successful campaigns delivering 2.6x more traffic than average. The campaign appealed to both influencers and prospective customers by disputing traditional “hustle culture” and arguing that building authentic relationships over time is a better strategy for successful sales.

4. Unify sales & marketing under a clear content vision

The marketing team at computer vision company GumGum approaches brand communication on two fronts, representing different points of their customer journey: Broad, educational content for building industry-wide thought leadership and brand awareness and tactical, how-to content that supports in-house salespeople converting prospectives who are ready to buy. Content at the top of the funnel includes white papers designed to influence big brands such as BMW, Adidas, and Disney while tactical content can include video case studies of how image recognition improved customer results or how GumGum’s advanced computer vision technologies enable superior brand safety.

“GumGum’s strategy represents a happy marriage between sales and marketing,” explains CMO Ben Plomion. “Marketing cannot be done in a silo. It must be data-driven, validated, and value-backed.” Efforts from the two organizational units are well-aligned. Marketing campaign call-to-actions facilitate seamless touch points with sales, while salespeople consistently provide clients with co-marketing opportunities such as press interviews and case studies.

5. Let go of ideas that don’t drive your bottom line

One key challenge of unifying marketing and sales is to let go of ideas which may seem brilliant and viral, but don’t actually convert to product sales. When Plomion was at a different company before joining GumGum, he and his team came up with a brilliant twist on Cards Against Humanity. They called their invention “Cards Against Marketing,” launched it, and had a huge hit on their hands. Unfortunately, the majority of people who loved their clever marketing product weren’t actually qualified target users for their product.

“A marketing idea may be fun or exciting, but it needs a strong business rationale for both GumGum and our customers to push the initiative through,” Plomion emphasizes. He revealed that the company lets go of creative ideas if they offer limited meaning for clients, don’t demonstrably translate to topline revenue, or don’t support their buyer’s journey.

6. Take creative risks with account-based marketing

Companies don’t buy, people do. The most effective content marketing you can do may very well target just a single person.

GumGum salespeople had been trying to close T-Mobile for months when one of them approached Plomion for marketing help. He and his team researched T-Mobile’s charismatic CEO John Legere, an active Twitter user who regularly engages with T-Mobile users. He and his team discovered that Legere had a long-time passion for comic books and was obsessed with Batman.

A brilliant marketing campaign was born. Plomion and his team designed a fully personalized comic book with a custom narrative featuring the telecom CEO as a caped crusader reminiscent of his favorite hero, working with a swanky personification of GumGum as his sidekick. Just as T-Mobile is the underdog fighting against the behemoths of AT&T and Verizon in the real world, T-Man the Data Knight battles his comic book enemies with the help of AI and computer vision.

GumGum T-Man Comic Book

Once completed, GumGum tweeted the comic book directly to Legere and sent copies to all of his executives and media buyers. Within an hour, he responded: “This is insane, this is so thoughtful! It’s perfect for me!”

His media buyers were also impressed and reached out for a meeting. T-Mobile is now GumGum’s biggest account on the West Coast.

7. Find and engage the right B2B influencers

Not every content campaign will involve the CEO of your target buyer company, so you still need to do research and develop meaningful relationships with the right group of influencers who can be instrumental to your brand. Nudge works with influencers like Brian Burns and Jill Rowley who are masters of social selling.

For your messaging to catch attention and get shared, Khan advises content and influencer marketing teams to take the following steps:

  1. Create high-quality content that you think influencers deeply care about. Take their vantage point, instead of approaching the issues from the perspectives of either your brand or your direct buyers.
  2. Test the message with a few industry influencers first for a period of a few weeks.
  3. If the messaging proves valuable within a given period, expand the campaign to several months to drive more extensive conversation about your product.

Nudge’s How I Buy series is a prime example of introducing a more impactful perspective into a marketing conversation. Most educational content in their industry focuses on how to market or sell an enterprise technology. Rather than add to this conventional angle, Khan and his team decided to focus on the other side of the equation: The buyers. They profiled big buyers in the tech space including CEOs, CFOs, CMOs, CTOs, and other check-signing executives to understand their customer journeys and how they approached important software purchases.

Plomion’s team operates similarly, first starting with a thesis about an industry topic and finding a sweet spot with relevant experts with the right technical credibility and story to share. “5 years ago, it was harder to find experts in computer vision, but now it’s easier and easier to find thought leaders,” he explains. “We work with anyone who has strong ideas. It’s helpful if they have a following, but that’s not the main criteria.”

Successful B2B marketing means joining the conversation

As conversations around enterprise AI continue to evolve, B2B marketing teams at AI vendors need to embrace creative content and influencer tactics to be maximally effective. Success involves fine-tuning your approach to making your brand stand out in the important conversations that drive your niche. One impactful way to do so is to shed the hard-sell personas and engage influencers on topics they care deeply about.

Even in an age where machines rule, meaning still matters.

Amazon expands influencer program to Twitter and Instagram ‘stars’ https://briefnews.eu/amazon-expands-influencer-program-to-twitter-and-instagram-stars/ https://briefnews.eu/amazon-expands-influencer-program-to-twitter-and-instagram-stars/#respond Sat, 11 Nov 2017 11:53:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amazon-expands-influencer-program-to-twitter-and-instagram-stars/

A couple of months ago, Amazon opened up its influencer program to more YouTube stars with large followings. It lets people with large followings on the video service set up their own page full of Amazon products, of which the influencer gets a cut when someone buys from that page. Now the online retailer is expanding to include Twitter and Instagram influencers in the program.

The Amazon Influencer Program is basically the retailer’s regular Associate program but makes it easier to create a custom storefront. It also gives influencers a simpler vanity URL for fans to visit, since many YouTube stars mention the link verbally. At a session during the current Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, YouTube influencer Dan Markham noted that he was able to quit his job as a biotech engineer with the proceeds of his Amazon storefront, making nearly $ 161,000 dollars on a fidget cube product placed on his custom storefront.

“Our market is changing,” says Virigina Salas Kastilio, super-influencer and owner of GINICANBREATHE, a next-gen marketing and branding agency. “We don’t respond to adverts and we don’t respond to being sold to and creating this illusion or this dream of selling us what kind of life we should be living.”

And businesses are floundering, because consumers recognize a hard pitch, a sales voice, an inauthentic moment of attempted connection that just drives them away.

Influencer marketing, wherein a celebrity or big-name authority acts convincingly enthusiastic about your product, was originally conceived as the end run around consumer weariness with sales pitches. But those have become suspect, too — they’re too remote, usually not actually convincing, and the one-to-one connection that makes influencer marketing successful is just not there.

Enter person-to-person influencer marketing, and heave a sigh of relief because you’d never be able to afford Beyoncé anyway.

“Consumers want to get more to the core message of things,” Kastilio explains. “And that’s why this type of influencer marketing, person-to-person that’s not a celebrity, is taking more weight in our economy because it just seems so much more credible.”

They’re the social media stars that have built up huge organic followings on their platforms, and have audiences full of adoring viewers or fans who respect them, connect with them, and don’t know if they want to be them or be with them. On paper, their follower numbers are eye-popping and you’re daydreaming about their metrics, but it isn’t always a match made in heaven.

“There’s a lot of disconnect and imbalance going on for companies that want to find the right fit,” Kastilio says. “It just has to do with a lot of searching, and a lot of testing and sometimes, just also doing runs with an influencer and seeing how the community is reacting to the partnership with the brand and being very strategic and creating these type of collaborations that seem organic and not forced and not oversold.”

Sometimes it’s simply a matter of recognizing that influencers aren’t businesspeople.

“What one finds when working with the right influencers,” Kastilio says, “is that sometimes the content might be really amazing and the reach might be incredible, but they don’t know how to actually convey a message, they don’t know how to storytell properly in terms of when it’s for a brand and not for themselves.”

But it’s not just the influencers who need to learn how to make the most of the relationship.

The brands are also at fault,” Kastilio says. “They just come to the influencer and they say, ‘We want you to do this, stand here, and whatever. And the creative comes out and they say, ‘Well, that has nothing to do with our message.’”

It needs to be a respectful collaboration from the outset, Kastilio says. And it needs to be real.

“The difficulty is that you see something that works — you see something that’s precious, you see something that’s beautiful,” she explains. “And as humans, we are are just simply opportunists. So we see that and think, we could monetize that. We could sell that. We could make something of that. And then what you do is change it. You take people with an audience and attention and exploit them — which goes against everything that they’ve built up.”

But companies are starting to get it, she says.

“Thankfully, more and more, there are a lot of companies that are giving influencers that space to really hold true to their voice and becoming more creative,” she says.

“That’s really what converts.”
