Social media responded with strident support – and concern.

Posting on Facebook, Patrisha Organo, 24, shared the extraordinary story of her “check flight”, the final hurdle before becoming qualified aircrew, which ended in her breastfeeding a stranger’s wailing baby. The post has racked up more than 117,000 ‘likes’ and over 20,000 shares in just 24 hours.

Organo said she approached the mother, who had run out of formula for the infant, and offered to feed the baby with her own milk – usually reserved for her nine-month-old daughter – which the desperate parent gratefully accepted.

The passenger and her baby had been in the airport since 9pm on Monday, and the flight didn’t depart until 5:10am the next morning, Organo told Smart Parenting. She was flying alone with the tiny infant, who was less than 1 month old.

While the reaction to Organo’s post has been overwhelmingly positive, several commenters have labeled the mother as “irresponsible” for running out of formula and for not breastfeeding herself.

“That’s amazing wondering why the mother couldn’t do it though… so sad the breastfeeding rates are so low. And like how do you run out of formula? Irresponsible,” wrote one woman in her response to the post.

“Kudos to the flight attendant but it should be a lesson for the mom. Ran out of formula? Really? You are traveling with a baby, the first thing you pack and make sure you have enough is food/milk and diapers… What if there was no one available to nurse your baby?” another commented.

Other, more alarmed, Facebook users criticized the woman for allowing a stranger breastfeed a baby for fear of passing on illness or disease.

“I’m sorry but the mother who forgot the formula human error or not how could she be sure of this women, a stranger… things are passed in breastmilk,” one of the more concerned responses reads. “It’s a nice story and wonderful to offer but I just don’t think I could do that with my child that’s a big risk.”

A second said: “Heroic act but if it were my baby I would not let a stranger feed her. That’s just me.”

It was subsequently pointed out by many Facebook users that airport TSA agents have been “known to toss milk”, that it’s common for breastmilk to dry up, or it could all simply be down to a “miscalculation of time”.

“First thing to think is irresponsible, what if she dropped it and the whole can spilled, what if ants got to it – anything can happen. Our job as humans is just to be happy the damn baby got fed and made it threw [SIC] the flight,” wrote one Facebook user in the parent’s defense.

“Every single one of you bashing on this poor mama. You should feel ashamed,” another wrote. “You have not idea what circumstances lead up to her being on that plane with no formula.”

Once you’ve flicked through the inflight Entertainment and bunkered down for what’s going to be a long flight, your mind starts wondering to the next leg of the journey: meal time.

But what happens when that meal which you’ve been looking forward to for the last few hours is barely enough to scratch the surface? Is asking for a second meal or snack frowned upon or eagerly welcomed?

Express.co.uk can reveal the what’s the etiquette when it comes to asking for a second in-flight meal.

As long as you’re not flying with a budget carrier where you have to pay for food and drinks separately, the answer is – yes – it’s perfectly okay for peckish passengers to ask for seconds.

In most situations flight attendants will oblige, provided there is still availability.

A Virgin Atlantic spokeswoman commented: “All food and drink services on board Virgin Atlantic are complimentary, be it the bag of pretzels served with their drink in Economy and Premium to a mid-flight ice cream movie treat.

“If a customer requests additional then we will always try to accommodate. There is a meal and a snack provided for all customers that fly with us but if a customer asks for a second meal during the service and we have some left at the end then we can always offer another”.

Speaking to The Telegraph, a spokesperson for the Russian carrier Aeroflot said: “Requests for extra food from passengers are not turned down. Passengers who ask for an extra meal will be given one, subject to availability”.

If you’re travelling with British Airways, those in the economy cabin are usually entitled to a complimentary four-course meal as well as drinks and snacks.

Carolina Martinoli, British Airways’ director of brand and customer experience said: “Our customers have told us they want to be able to save some ideas for later in the flight.

“We’ve replaced the water cup with a bottle of Highland Spring on the first meal, and added Graze snack boxes on our longest flights.” That means there are plenty of snacks on-board to keep the hunger pangs at bay.

Ant Clarke Cowell, from Holiday Extras, commented: “If one meal doesn’t quite fill you up, it’s very likely that the airless will have surplus supplies and will try to accommodate extra servings, whether it’s small snacks such as crisp or the bigger hot meals that are served as mains. It’s always worth trying your luck as it’s unlikely that you’ll be turned down!”.

However, if you are too reluctant to ask, bringing your own food on a flight is another surefire way to prevent stomach rumbles from occurring. But what are the rules about bringing food on a flight?

Solids such as sandwiches, crackers, crisps and chocolate will be allowed on the plane.

However, it’s usually a jar of Marmite or pot of jam which is likely to cause some problems.

Those travelling on any flight operated by an EU airline are allowed to bring food, provided it complies with liquid restrictions. You are not allowed to carry any liquids which hold more than 100ml. This limit also includes semi-liquid foods like jam, syrup, soft cheese, yoghurt, oil and vinegar.

So, if you’re thinking of bringing a treat on board, check whether your food complies with UK Government restrictions beforehand. Otherwise you risk having it confiscated at airport security.

In-flight meals are a contentious issue regarding the freshness and taste of the food when in the air.

It has already been revealed how many calories passengers consume on a flight through meals and snacks.

Now it’s time to reveal how much in-flight meals cost – and you might be shocked by the answer. 

An expert has weighed in regarding the secrets behind the in-flight food.

Anne De Hauw, from catering company Gate Group, spilled the beans on in-flight meals. 

Gate Group works with over 300 airlines, therefore has behind-the-scenes knowledge of the secrets of the trade.

She explained in an interview with Skift that the cost of an economy class meal is roughly $ 10.50 (£7.88) per passenger.

A business class meal is much more, as it has to include the china, cutlery, glass and napkins as well as the tray and seasoning.

This comes in at $ 33 (£24.78) per passenger.

Despite the scary amount of calories consumed on a fight, people don’t choose the healthy option for a surprising reason.

She explained: “We have done research and actually people, unconsciously, look to comfort themselves because there’s that sentiment of fear and uncertainty.

“We usually allow more guilty pleasures in the air than on the ground.”

Luxury on a flight comes at a price, and many passengers are often outraged over the up-selling of soft drinks

Ms De Hauw explained why items, such as Coca-Cola, cost so much.

She stated: “The cans need to be sorted in the catering unit at the airport. They need to be sorted into trolleys. 

“The catering then needs to be driven by the high-loaders of the caterer at the airport and loaded on the aeroplane and the price of a high-loader is around $ 200,000 (£150,172).”

It has recently been revealed why flight attendants hate serving fizzy drinks on a plane.

Anyone who has sat in economy class on a plane knows it can get a little cramped.

But one woman took her stretch out to the extreme – and her fellow passenger was less than impressed. 

The man sitting behind her was tucking into his in-flight meal on his tray table. 

But he was horrified to see the woman’s bandaged foot poking through the armrest space towards him. 

In the photo the man captured, the woman’s foot was actually touching his tray table. 

He shared the image online, where it has since gone viral. 

The disgruntled passenger said: “She nearly stuck her toe in my meal. 

“At one point [she] had her legs across half the narrow walkway causing stewardesses to navigate around her.”

The man said he regretted not asking the woman to put her feet back in her own seat. 

He explained: “I’m not sure why, really. Maybe that constant nagging many of us have to not cause a scene.”

The passenger said his wife in the seat beside him also stopped him from lashing out at the woman in front. 

She wasn’t the first flyer to irritate someone with their feet.
