The Asian longhorned tick was only seen in laboratories and in quarantine in the US until “thousands of them” turned up on a pet sheep in New Jersey last year. Because females can generate progeny without mating –up to 2,000 eggs at a time– a single Asian longhorned tick can quickly turn into an infestation.

The ticks have already been found twice on humans this year, as well as on six domestic species and six species of wildlife. While none of the known hosts are believed to have been infected by dangerous pathogens as a result, the CDC admits that new lab tests may be needed to detect all the diseases the species is capable of spreading. Asian longhorned ticks are notorious as a vector for dangerous diseases in their native Asia, including Japanese spotted fever and one virus that causes a hemorrhagic fever that kills 30 percent of its victims.

“The full public health and agricultural impact of this tick discovery and spread is unknown,” warned the CDC’s Ben Beard, deputy director of the Division of Vector-Borne Diseases. Tick-borne diseases are already underreported, and it is unknown how long this species has been in the country before it was spotted on the sheep – or how it got here.

The CDC hopes to stop the invasion from getting out of control with a “broad range of interventions,” and states have already begun submitting specimens for testing to see if they are members of the new species. This is the first time an invasive species of tick has breached quarantine to enter the US in nearly 80 years – before 2017, Asian longhorned ticks were successfully intercepted at ports of entry at least 15 times, hitching rides on imported animals and materials.

Tick-borne illness has increased threefold since 2004, according to another CDC report released earlier this year, and the agency is networking with agricultural and veterinary scientists as well as federal, state, and local experts in an effort to contain the menace. CDC officials plan to meet next week with representatives of other federal agencies to attempt to develop a national strategy to fight these illnesses.

“The problems are getting worse and worse,” Lyle Petersen, director of the CDC’s Division of Vector-Borne Diseases, told the Washington Post. “We’re losing this battle.”

Harlequin ladybirds have been pictured up and down the country nestling on walls and inside people’s homes.

The bugs, which are reported to have arrived in Britain from Asia, carry a disease called laboulbeniales, which is a form of fungi.

While this can’t be passed on to humans, scientists say the fungus will infect our native species, which are already under threat from habitat loss.

Whether or not the fungus is harmful, is not yet known, but what humans are at risk of from the pests is a bite.

According to experts, if Harlequin ladybirds don’t have any food they are more likely to bite people.

This can leave a little bump and sting, and some people may go on to experience a severe allergic reaction to it, like with any insect bite.

All ladybirds can bite, but the Harlequin ladybird is more aggressive and tends to bite more often, according to the NHS.

It adds; “The harlequin ladybird can be red or orange with multiple spots. Look out for a white spot on its head – other ladybirds don’t have these patches.

“Ladybird bites can be painful, but aren’t usually anything to worry about.”

So what should you do if you’re bitten?

The health body offers general advice for being bitten or stung by insects.

First, you should wash the affected area with soap and water.

Next, apply a cold compress (such as a flannel or clothe cooled with cold water) or an ice pack to any swelling for at least 10 minutes.

Raise or elevate the affected area if possible, as this can help reduce swelling.

Avoid scratching the area or bursting any blisters, to reduce the risk of infection.

Finally, avoid traditional home remedies, such as vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, as they’re unlikely to help.

Guidelines published by the Harlequin Ladybird Society have advised how to spot the pesky bugs.

Like many species of ladybird, the Harlequin ladybird has a bright red back and bold black or orange spots.

They are distinguishable from other ladybirds from their large size, with the Harlequin species measuring between 7-8mm in diameter.

They also have a variety of pale coloured wings, including yellow-orange, orange-red, red or black and can vary between the colours.

The number of spots on their back can range from none at all to 21.

Another common household pest which can cause irritable bites is the bed bug.

Bed bugs can be difficult to spot which makes being bitten very difficult to avoid.

Not only do they crawl out at night to bite exposed skin, they’re also very small, with adult bed bugs only growing up to 5mm long.

One way of discovering if you hovered bugs is their irritable bites. These can cause thy red bumps, and in more severe cases a rash or fluid-filled blisters.

So what’s the most effective treatment for bed bug bites? David Cross, head of technical training at Rentokil Pest Control, suggests six methods.

He said: “There are many natural remedies and ‘old wives tales’ on what you can use to help reduce the inflammation and itching associated with bed bug bites.”

David’s following six treatments should be applied after washing the bites with soap and water, then drying them.

Calamine lotion

This relieves itching and also helps to dry rashes and protect the skin.

Baking soda and water

Make a paste with baking soda and water, and apply it directly to the skin. Let it dry before wiping away with a cotton pad.

Toothpaste

The menthol contained in toothpaste is said to be a good anti-itch remedy. Apply a generous amount to the bite to soothe the burning sensation and relieve the itching.

Witch Hazel

This provides a mild anaesthetic effect that helps to calm the itching caused by bites.

Aloe vera

Both “fresh” Aloe vera or gel works well against insect bites. The active substances and amino acids present in Aloe Vera help relieve itching and burning sensations.

Lemon juice

This has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It is also a natural astringent. Lemon juice can help dry rashes and itchiness while reducing redness and swelling.

So how do you get rid of bedbugs and how can you prevent an infestation?

The NHS suggests contacting your local council or a pest control firm that’s a member of the British Pest Control Association or National Pest Technicians Association.

It writes on its website: “A technician will carry out an inspection to confirm an infestation. They can then use special treatments such as insecticide, a steamer or rapid freeze system to get rid of the bugs.”

It also suggests a number of steps you may be asked to carry out to help the problem.

The first, is to wash infested clothes or bed linen at 60C or put them in a dryer on a hot setting for 30 minutes.

Next, use a vacuum cleaner with a hose to suck up any bugs you can see. Proceed to dispose of the contents of the vacuum cleaner in a sealed bag.

Consider throwing away any mattress or furniture that’s heavily infested.

Use plastic mattress covers that encase the entire mattress – this will stop any bed bugs getting in or out.

If you’re looking to prevent bed bug infestations, make sure to inspect your mattress and bed regularly for signs of an infestation and get professional advice if you think you have bed bugs.

Avoid buying second-hand mattresses and carefully inspect second-hand furniture before bringing it in your home.

Finally, keep your bedroom tidy and remove clutter.

Ten islands in Australia are being shut down thanks to the rat infestation currently plaguing the land.

Found off the coast of Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef, they will remain closed for three weeks while the problem is tackled.

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service will be working to remove the rodents on the islands.

The Franklin Islands and Northern Barnard Islands are those affected.

The rats are thought to have migrated to the island by stowing on boats that visit the islands or using logs during flooding to raft over.

Ranger Warrick Armstrong told ABC News Australia how they can affect other wildlife in the area.

He explained: “They cause major extinctions and a decline in island biodiversity around the world, and we certainly know on our Australian islands they have a huge impact on nesting seabirds.

“They are damaging seabird eggs, eating hatchlings.

“We also have a lot of visitors to campgrounds, so there’s a risk of disease that’s carried by these pest rats.”

A helicopter will drop bait over the islands as part of the baiting programme.

Franklin Islands is often named as one of the best beaches in Australia.

The islands in Cairns, which include the Franklin Islands, are also known to have the best boat tours across the region.

They are all uninhabited by humans and protected, meaning they remain peaceful and undamaged.

Beautiful wildlife is often the focus of the tours, which frequently stop over on the island, although camping on the island requires permission.

The Australian islands aren’t the only closures to affect the tourism industry this year.

Boracay in the Philippines has been forced to close in an attempt to protect it.

Sewage flows in the water from the local hotels and establishments has ruined the island, forcing its closure.

Maya Bay in Thailand is also to close this summer.

Boats and tourists have risen in number in recent years, so the closure hopes to protect the damaged coral.
