A fire has ravaged an award-winning luxury resort on a private island in the Maldives. Videos from the scene show villas going up in flames as panicked residents scream in the background. No injuries or deaths have been reported. Gili Lankanfushi, a top-notch secluded resort, located a 20-minute speedboat ride away from the Male International Airport, the main international airport in the Maldives, caught fire on Wednesday around 11.00 pm. The resort said in a statement on Twitter that it is so far unclear what had triggered the blaze, adding that all its guests and staff have been evacuated from the island and provided shelter. The extent of the damage inflicted on the resort by the sweeping fires is yet to be assessed, pending “a full investigation.” Judging by the videos from the place, however, the luxury gateway, surrounded by pristine blue waters of a lagoon, may be completely wiped out. Gili Lankanfushi prides itself on being built “using ecofriendly materials” and “authentic style” design. Footage filmed off the coast of the tropical resort shows its shores fully engulfed in flames. Last year, the hotel was ranked among the top five best hotels in the world by TripAdvisor, and is the No.1 hotel in Maldives. Its accommodation, style and locations have been repeatedly praised by international reviewers. The historic First Baptist Church in Wakefield, Massachusetts has been reduced to burned-out scaffolding after it was gutted by a massive blaze, sparked by a bolt of lightning. No injuries have been reported. The fire erupted around 7:30pm Tuesday. However, when fire engines arrived, the 180-foot landmark was already fully engulfed in flames and could not be saved. Witnesses say the fire was caused by lightning that hit the church’s steeple and spread rapidly. “I saw the lightning strike the steeple, and we saw the smoke and it just went up in flames fast,” local Christian Bruno told CBS Boston. Miraculously, no one was injured in the blaze, although there were classes taking place inside the church at the time. In half an hour, the raging inferno devoured the spire of the church, which then collapsed. Around 100 firefighters battled the blaze for hours, but close to midnight, the fire was still devouring the inside of the church. It was so fierce that the heat could be felt for several blocks and the flames could be seen on the outskirts of the city. The building was nearly 150 years old and was a well-known attraction. The church shared its premises with several organizations, including a nursery school, a band, and an Alcoholics Anonymous group. Meanwhile, worshippers have been mourning the loss of the church. “This church has been here forever and I love this church, they just had the roof redone, it’s a beautiful church,” local resident Matt French told Boston 25 News. “It’s sad, there are people on the block crying.” On its official page, the church called for donations that would be needed to rebuild the historic building from scratch. “We know that we serve a God who specializes in restoring brokenness and who can bring beauty even from ashes. So we move into the future with trust, hope, and gratitude.” Think your friends would be interested? Share this story! Top Gear were testing out the Alpine A110 when it caught fire mid-filming with Chris Harris inside. After a glitzy sequence showcasing all of the features available in the car, Chris travelled through Top Gear’s “quantum portal” to an area more suited for the car. However, he soon found himself in the middle of a rally in Montecarlo. Eddie Jordan joined Chris in the Alpine A110 car as a co-driver for the rally. Driving around the winding roads, Eddie screamed in excitement: “Faster, faster, drive it like you stole it!” Chris then explained: “Just a few minutes into the stage, the Alpine faltered.” The BBC filming car could be seen to continue moving ahead as Chris and Eddie’s car came to a halt. Chris then said: “Electric failure danger. We’re by the side of the road. It’s a total konk-out.” As screaming from he team could be heard over the radio to get out, Chris gasped: “Oh, it’s on fire, it’s on fire! Get out, get out!” The BBC safety team could then be seen to watch the car become an inferno as the car exploded. A member of the team was heard to say: “Come away. Everybody back away from the vehicle now please!” Safely back in the studio, the audience were speechless as Matt LeBlanc teased: “Well, I hate it when you can’t get the temperature right in the car! “It’s with too cold… or on fire. What happened?” Chris explained: “I’d literally been driving it for a few minutes. The warning light came on the dashboard. Something about electrical failures. “Stop, power cuts almost immediately and the first time i knew it was on fire was when I opened the car door and the flames licked straight up my arm. Most importantly, everyone is okay.” Alpine wanted to stress that the car was a prototype and not a finished production car. Chris explained that Alpine have undertaken a full investigation. He then read a statement, saying: “They have concluded that this isolated fire incident was caused by a fuel leak. “Robust measure have been put in place to ensure that such incidents cannot reoccur.” Matt hen jibed: “Basically, they’re going to remove all the fire before putting them on sale.” Top Gear is currently available to watch on the BBC iPlayer. Traumatized locals have taken to the streets in the Siberian city of Kemerovo. Many are calling for the resignation of authorities after a fire in a shopping mall left dozens dead, including many children. On Tuesday morning, hundreds of people came to the regional administration headquarters after a massive fire at the Winter Cherry Shopping Center claimed the lives of at least 64 people. The demonstrators commemorated the victims but also vented their anger at the authorities, demanding punishment for those responsible for the tragedy. Locals were heard chanting “truth” and “murderers” during the rally. Some social media reports claim the death toll is much higher than the 64 already announced. Local authorities, however, dismissed the allegations. Kemerovo Mayor Ilya Serdyuk suggested visiting a local mortuary to debunk the rumors. The magnitude of the tragedy that struck the Siberian city of Kemerovo on Sunday afternoon, taking the lives of dozens, including many children, has been captured by a drone, as firefighters were battling to contain the blaze. The disaster struck the packed shopping and entertainment complex in Kemerovo at around 4 pm local time on Sunday. A popular venue full of restaurants, cinemas, a sauna and a children’s zoo, quickly turned into an inferno after the fire started on an upper floor where families with children were watching the latest blockbusters. The fire spread so quickly that many of the victims found it impossible to escape through thick toxic smoke engulfing the building, the drone footage, captured at the height of the fire, showed. Ash from the disaster scene covered entire neighborhoods of the city. It took firefighters hours to localize the raging fire, which was reduced to some 1,600 square meters only by midnight. Unfortunately, not everyone made it out alive. Some shocking videos posted on social media showed people jumping from windows to escape the flames as smoke billowed from windows. “There are victims. People broke windows and jumped from there,” one lucky survivor named Ekaterina told Ruptly’s RT video agency. Dramatic VIDEO shows man jumping out of burning shopping mall in Russia Dozens of people remain missing, including many children, as rescuers have yet to fully examine the ruins of the still-burning complex. While the firefighters managed to rescue some twenty people alive, and helped some 100 others evacuate, at least 37 people have been confirmed as having died in the blaze so far, with the number expected to rise. Game of Thrones‘ eighth and final season doesn’t hit the small screen until sometime in 2019, and when it does, it will only consist of six episodes. That means it’ll have the fewest number of episodes of any season of the fantasy series (although each of those episodes could end up being feature-length). Still, a vague release in 2019 is still a long way away, which leaves plenty of time for rabid fans to uncover major spoilers.
And now it looks like a big leak from the new season has arrived, along with another significant spoiler that could change the game entirely. Read on if you’re okay with knowing about some potentially huge Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers a year before the final season debuts.
Here’s one last chance to avoid spoilers. If you’re reading these words through halfway-closed eyes because you’re on the fence about knowing what happens, look away now!
Okay, now that we’re all on the same page, here’s what you need to know. Esquire points us to an article from GoT fan site Watchers on the Wall, who have tracked down a video of one of the show’s most beloved sets being engulfed in flames:
Now we’re just left to speculate. We saw the Night King and an undead Viserion burning down The Wall in the season 7 finale, so has that dangerous duo continued south and turned their flames on Winterfell next? Or could this be the result of a battle between Daenerys and Cersei, with Jon’s adopted home caught in the middle? Or, even juicier, might this be collateral damage in an epic breakup between Jon and Dany? We know Dany can be ruthless – could she be ruthless enough to turn her own flames upon Winterfell if the situation called for it?
There is one more possibility, however unlikely: this might also be one of the fake endings that the series is reportedly planning that are designed to throw people off the scent of the story’s real conclusion. If that’s the case here, that would be incredibly elaborate, but I’m not prepared to say the production team isn’t capable of going to extreme lengths to protect the finale of one of the biggest shows in TV history.
Elsewhere, TVLine has a tantalizing report about a huge pregnancy twist. “The unlikely pregnancy will have more than a few implications, both dramatic and darkly comedic,” they say, and though viewers will immediately make an assumption about the identity of the baby’s father, that assumption may be misguided. The site doesn’t specifically mention that it’s Game of Thrones, but they do describe it as “a wildly popular Emmy-winning series on a premium cable network” that returns in 2019, so it’s almost certainly Game of Thrones.
My first thought went to Dany and Jon’s boat sex at the end of season 7, since the “dramatic and darkly comedic” implications could arise when the two discover that they’re related. And it’d be an “unlikely” pregnancy because Dany is supposed to be barren after the curse put on her by the deceitful Mirri Maz Duur back in season one.
But I almost forgot about Cersei’s reveal that she was pregnant in last year’s finale. That could also be the pregnancy in question here, and if that’s the case, the notion of the father not being who we think it is (read: Jaime) makes me wonder who the hell else Cersei would have been bumping uglies with. Qyburn? The Mountain? What horrors lie in store for us when Game of Thrones returns? I can’t wait to find out.

Two children were among six people who died after a fuel tanker exploded on a motorway in northern Italy.
Five of the victims were travelling in the same car along the A21 near Brescia when their Kia was shunted by a lorry which sent it careening into the back of the tanker, AFP reports.

The collision caused the tanker to explode in a massive fireball killing the people in the car as well as the driver of the lorry. The man driving the tanker managed to escape alive by jumping out of the cabin just after the explosion.
The police released video footage of firefighters tackling the huge blaze in the aftermath of the deadly crash. Large columns of black smoke can be seen for several miles.
Italian newspaper La Repubblica reports that the crash took place as traffic was backing up because of an earlier incident. The paper also revealed that the people killed in the car were all from the same family and the entire family died in the accident.

(The Morning Watch is a recurring feature that highlights a handful of noteworthy videos from around the web. They could be video essays, fanmade productions, featurettes, short films, hilarious sketches, or just anything that has to do with our favorite movies and TV shows.)
In this edition, on this day that a total eclipse of the heart sun will be seen in certain parts of the world, take a look at the history of eclipses in film and television. Plus, go behind the scenes of the disco music video for “Guardians Inferno” from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 soundtrack and watch a Game of Thrones trailer cut in the style of Justice League and Thor: Ragnarok.
First up, in honor of the solar eclipse happening later today, Birth.Movies.Death and Alamo Drafthouse take a look back at the history of eclipses that have appeared in film and television over the years. It spans from Bugs Bunny to CSI: Miami and everything in between. And remember, don’t stare directly into the sun, so you’re not blind when the world ends.
Next up, following last night’s episode of Game of Thrones, this fanmade trailer for the series cut in the style of the first Justice League Comic-Con trailer, mixed with the theatrical trailer for Thor: Ragnarok, really sells us on a Seven Samurai meets Suicide Squad kind of movie. Using a bunch of footage from the current seventh season of Game of Thrones and the songs of The White Stripes and Led Zeppelin, video creator Nick Growal (via Film School Rejects) has brought a new kind of energy to the HBO fantasy series. It’s a little long-winded and somewhat clunky in parts, but it’s still fun.
Finally, you’ve seen the psychedelic music video for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 soundtrack song “Guardians Inferno,” and now you can go behind the scenes and see all of the film’s cast members, as well as director James Gunn, in their 1970s wardrobe without all that grainy, faux VHS quality.

Inferno on Blu-ray
No, not the Tom Hanks movie (or the Werner Herzog one). I’ve talked before about my affection for the less reputable 3D B-movies that labels like Kino-Lorber and Twilight Time have been releasing on Blu-ray, and this 1953 effort – out a little while back from Twilight Time – is hard to even explain properly: it’s a 3D Western survival story with film noir undertones, in which wealthy jerk Robert Ryan is left for dead in the desert by his wife and her lover, and basically has to crawl his way to civilization. It’s visually masterful (the cinematographer is The Wild Bunch’s Lucien Ballard), and really comes to life, dimensionally speaking, once Ryan begins his terrifying and incapacitated journey through the desert, where he’s challenged by steep drops, wild landscapes, falling rocks, and even a rattlesnake. And the final fight scene, full of flying lanterns, flying chairs, and flying fists, is a real corker. The nonstop voice-over monologue is a little monotonous, but as per usual with Ryan, the sheer physicality of the performance is striking; there’s never been a movie star quite like him, and this long-forgotten little gem is a fine showcase for his boundless talents. — Jason Bailey, Film Editor

Eve Babitz’s Slow Days, Fast Company
I’ll be toting Eve Babitz’s Slow Days, Fast Company with me to the beach for my (semi-not-really) vacation read in a few weeks. This fall marks my one-year anniversary of living in LA. Discovering the city through novels has been a fun supplement to my other explorations. All I really know about Babitz is from her iconic photo with Marcel Duchamp. She’s nude, and they’re playing a game of chess. The intro to Slow Days, Fast Company sounds like several conversations I’ve had with LA strangers before: “I did not become famous, but I got near enough to smell the stench of success.” Babitz gave a rare interview to Vice recently: ”The L.A. I lived in and wrote about doesn’t exist anymore. Everything is transient. The Los Angeles of my youth was just that—mine. Everyone feels like that about the place they grew up, my place just happens to be L.A. Of course, to me it’s a pale ghost, but to someone else growing up now, it’s their home. It was a small factory town (that old cliché, but it was). Now it’s an international city, probably not that different from New York or Tokyo. Although you still can’t surf in those places.” — Alison Nastasi, Weekend Editor

Charles Bronson in The Valachi Papers
Quite accidentally, I keep encountering Charles Bronson. Within the last month or so, I’ve seen his marvelous turn in Hard Times at the Quad, the complicated performance that gave way to decades of sleepwalking in Death Wish at Film Forum, and his terrific work in this gangster picture, also new on Blu from Twilight Time. Released late in 1972 by ever-industrious producer Dino De Laurentis, it was clearly meant to capitalize on the success of The Godfather earlier that year; the knock-off element is apparent, as is the rushed production (it’s fun to spot contemporary cars and buildings in the backgrounds of this period movie, including a hilarious late appearance by the just-completed World Trade Center towers). As far as competing with Coppola’s classic, Valachi knows the words but not the music – but that takes nothing away from the skill of Bronson’s portrayal of a (real-life) mob enforcer-turned-informant. The film burns with his charisma, intensity, and personality, and serves as a reminder of what was really lost in the success of Death Wish two years later: the possibility of more work as finely-tuned as this, rather than films that merely required him to scowl and shoot people. — Jason Bailey, Film Editor

Maggie Nelson’s The Argonauts
The Argonauts is a book that, as I’m sure many are aware (yeah, I was late to the game), is attuned to the fluidity of the theoretical and the personal and makes it manifest on the page. With each passage presented in tiny fits of vivid experience, Nelson weaves theory in as seamlessly as a more straightforward memoirist might a sensory description — but then she also interrogates it, again, often not just through analysis, but rather experience. What’s so beautiful about the book is that, while critical theory can often unmoor the visceral and sexual aspects of human experience from what makes them feel immediate and, well, human, Nelson often uses theory as a way to burrow deeper into her own fervent desires and affections. In discussing queerness, she dismantles some of the binaries and more calcified ideas of identity that an identity/movement with such an anti-binary approach has created for itself — “it’s the binary of normative and transgressive that’s unsustainable, along with the demand that anyone live a life that’s all one thing” she writes. And reading that passage — and most of her passages challenging assumptions about the idea of motherhood and queer radicalism being mutually exclusive — was refreshing and even oddly relaxing.
This is a book that takes abstractions and brings them down to life, rather than making abstractions out of life. “I am not interested in a hermeneutics, or an erotics or a metaphorics, of my anus. I am interested in ass-fucking,” she writes. Her rejection of some of the pretensions of theoretical abstracts — coupled with her effortless invocation of them to understand her relationship to love, fucking, and motherhood, and the specificity in her, and everyone’s, relationship to all of the above — is among what makes the book just as soul-opening as it is mind-opening, what makes it more than a book that makes you “think” about the fluidities of life and love, but also love them in so doing. — Moze Halperin, Senior Editor
