Talking exclusively to RT host and former football great Peter Schmeichel, Infantino said that his top goal is to develop football around the globe and to bring people together with the help of the game.

The FIFA president also spoke about the newly implemented Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, explaining why they decided to introduce the innovative technology at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“Personally I was very skeptical at the beginning. I didn’t really believe that it could work because I was afraid for the flow of the game and interruptions. But on the sidelines for decades, everyone was saying we should have some video help for a referee,” Infantino said.

“In 2018, if everyone in front of his TV or inside the stadium in front of his mobile phone knows within a few seconds that a referee has committed a big mistake, and the only one who doesn’t know that is the referee himself, [this means] we made something wrong,” he added.

The head of FIFA said that statistics they received from testing the VAR system at numerous matches showed that the technology helps to avoid refereeing mistakes.

“We have tested the VAR in more than 1,000 official matches and the result has been that, without the VAR, there was one clear mistake of a referee every three games. With the VAR, there was one clear mistake every 19 games. The accuracy of referees’ decisions without the VAR is 93 percent, which is already extremely high. With the VAR, this percentage goes to 99 [percent]. It’s not 100 per cent, but 99 is better than 93,” he said.

“When it comes to interruption and the flow of the game, the statistics that captured my attention showed that every match we are losing seven minutes for throw-ins. Throw-ins don’t decide anything. VAR needs one minute per game and decides [the outcome of] the game. So we can lose one minute per game if it has impact on the game,” Infantino added.

The FIFA president, whose family emigrated from Italy to Switzerland when he was a kid, said that growing up in a different community impacted his development, helping him to embrace diversity.

“I think to some extent being an immigrant helps as well. Because you grow up embracing different cultures, different languages, entering conflicts which existed at that time in Switzerland. And you always have to find ways to get along. Football has always helped to find dialogue. [It helped] to bring together the Swiss and Italian communities in the village where I grew up.”

Infantino thinks that his openness to diversity and different cultures helps him to resolve problems and build bridges between countries.

“I’m convinced that this is helping. When you are part of a minority and you want to be heard or you want to convince [people], you need to have better arguments than the others. You need also to listen to the majority and to understand different dynamics. So, it opens your mind and helps to recognize that people in different places think differently, they have different traditions and different mentality.”

The FIFA chief said that severe criticism he received after his visit to Iran didn’t affect his plans to develop women’s football throughout the world.

“I went to Iran to speak about development of women’s football with the president of Iran and now I’m criticized in Western Europe for going to Iran. For me as FIFA president, If I don’t go and if I don’t speak to the president of Iran and the authorities there about women’s football and women’s access to stadiums, who is going to do that?
“What do we achieve if we just criticize, if we just dispute and argue, if we block and boycott? We will achieve nothing. If we have a dialogue maybe we will achieve just a little bit, but even a little bit is better than nothing. And maybe we will achieve nothing but we will keep this dialogue open and one day we will achieve success thanks to football.”

In a press conference held at the stadium wrapping up the tournament, Infantino said there had been no serious incidents at the competition, which dispelled any doubts about Russia’s ability to organize and hold a major football tournament.

“Spasibo (Thank you), dobro pozhalovat (welcome). This Confederations Cup here in Russia in the four venues of Kazan, St. Petersburg, Sochi has been a great success, from many points of view,” said Infantino, practicing his Russian.

“[Before the tournament], we heard about a lot of problems: that no one would care, that the teams don’t want to come, they don’t want to play. We heard about violence, hooligans, incidents, racism – we had nothing, we had no incidents, everything ran smoothly.

“We heard about the infrastructure, that it is not ready, not working – the transport works, there is free transport between cities. This doesn’t happen in many other countries where events are organized, but it happened here.”

Questions had been raised in the Western media regarding Russia’s readiness to hold a major football event.

The BBC produced an entire supposed documentary, Russia’s Hooligan Army, dedicated to raising concerns about fan violence in Russia.

Infantino paid tribute to the altogether different atmosphere experienced during the tournament, and expressed enthusiasm at the prospect of seeing the same welcome at the World Cup in Russia in a year’s time.

“If this is what a problematic tournament looks like, then I hope there are many problematic tournaments, because it went very well. We can expect same warm welcome next year. This is what it is about – enjoying football,” Infantino said.

“Look at all the volunteers, the smile they have the willingness to help, this is the face of Russia. We had 6,000 volunteers from 78 different countries, this shows the interest and enthusiasm in the country for football and for the Confederations Cup,” he added.

Speaking at the closing press conference for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup at St. Petersburg Stadium ahead of the competition’s final on Sunday, Infantino said it made no sense to impose sanctions on Russia in the absence of any wrongdoing.

“All 23 Russian players were tested by UEFA accredited doctors and had everything tested. In this Confederations Cup all players were tested, not by Russian people outside of Russia, but by people in our laboratory in Lausanne,” the FIFA president said.

“All these tests, including, in addition, all these tests, not made in Russia, all done in WADA laboratory tests, all tests so far have given negative results. There can be no sanctions. Some people will want sanctions, but if there are no negative results, how can there be?” he said.

It had previously been reported that all of the members of Russia’s 23-man squad for Brazil 2014 were “people of interest” in a doping probe. Four were on Russia’s Confederations Cup squad as well.

The report that prompted the probe, which was compiled by Canadian lawyer Richard McLaren, alleged that 30 sports, including football, covered up samples from 1,000 athletes between 2011 and 2015. The accusations are still under investigation by FIFA.

However, Infantino suggested that the allegations were largely built on “speculation,” while promising that FIFA will take immediate disciplinary proceedings in the event of positive results.

“When it comes to doping, it was always one of these issues that has been popping up. There is already an ongoing investigation. A few facts: a lot of news is made on speculations, as long as speculations don’t become facts.

“When it comes to Russia, FIFA, UEFA, all Russian players playing in World Cup 2014, they were tested by FIFA- and by WADA- accredited laboratories. The tests and samples taken by FIFA doctors and samples were sent to Lausanne, (Switzerland), by all 23 players playing in the competition.

“What was done by WADA accredited laboratories in Lausanne, what was done after by FIFA or UEFA, are disciplinary proceedings, if the results of these tests are negatives, there is not much more we can do.

“If it comes out that there has been some tampering of samples… then there will be sanctions. When the results come out that there has been an anti-doping rule violation, then there will be disciplinary proceedings. If the result of the test is positive, there is no way you can hide this; if they are positive, then there will be disciplinary measures,” he said.

Also attending the conference wrapping up the tournament were the chairman of FIFA’s Referees Committee, Pierluigi Collina, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko, and Russia 2018 LOC head Alexey Sorokin.

On Sunday, Germany will take on Chile in St. Petersburg Stadium for the final game of the 2017 Confederations Cup, which serves as a dress rehearsal for the FIFA 2018 World Cup that is also to be held in Russia.
