  • President Donald Trump told House Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi that Mexico would pay for a wall along the US-Mexico border through the updated North American Free Trade Agreement.
  • The deal does not include any provisions compelling Mexico to pay for a border wall.
  • Trump also argued that increased economic growth from the agreement would pay for the wall, but Democrats pushed back on that idea.

President Donald Trump told House Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer that Mexico would pay for his proposed wall along the border, but the president made a head-scratching claim about how that would happen.

According to sources with knowledge of private portions of Trump’s contentious meeting with the Democratic leaders, Trump insisted that Mexico would eventually pay for the wall. He said that would happen via the newly updated North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), now named the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Here’s how to get the online film community all riled up for at least 13 hours: put a TV show on your list of best movies of 2017.

Sight & Sound, an esteemed film magazine published by the British Film Institute, immediately stirred up controversy by including David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return in its annual critics poll of the top 20 movies of the year. It set Twitter ablaze, with film and TV critics arguing over what constitutes a TV show or a movie. It asks a huge question: should profoundly great television be considered a film?

For its annual Sight & Sound list, BFI polled 180 critics, programmers, and academics from around the world. And for the first time in its history, a TV show landed in the top 10, with Twin Peaks nestled right at the No. 2 spot. Here is the list below:

  2. Twin Peaks: The Return, dirs: Mark Frost, David Lynch
  3. Call Me by Your Name, dir: Luca Guadagnino
  4. Zama, dir: Lucrecia Martel
  5. Western, dir: Valeska Grisebach
  6. Faces Places, dir: Agnes Varda, JR
  7. Good Time, dirs: Ben and Josh Safdie
  8. Loveless, dir: Andrey Zvyagintsev
  9. Dunkirk, dir: Christopher Nolan
  10. The Florida Project, dir: Sean Baker
  11. A Ghost Story, dir: David Lowery
  12. BPM, dir: Robin Campillo
  13. Lady Macbeth, dir: William Oldroyd
  14. You Were Never Really Here, dir: Lynne Ramsay
  15. God’s Own Country, dir: Francis Lee
  16. Personal Shopper, dir: Olivier Assayas
  17. The Shape Of Water, dir: Guillermo del Toro
  18. Strong Island, dir: Yance Ford
  19. I Am Not Your Negro, dir: Raoul Peck
  20. Lady Bird, dir: Greta Gerwig
  21.  Let the Sunshine In, dir: Claire Denis
  22. Moonlight, dir: Barry Jenkins
  23. mother!, dir: Darren Aronofsky
  24. Mudbound, dir: Dee Rees
  25. The Other Side Of Hope, dir: Aki Kaurismaki
  26. Silence, dir: Martin Scorsese

Barring the fact that Moonlight and Silence were films released in many territories in 2016, the most controversial entry in this list is unmistakably Twin Peaks. An 18-episode series that aired on Showtime in the summer of 2017, Twin Peaks: The Return was a sequel to David Lynch’s 1990 drama Twin Peaks, which aired for two seasons.

Of course, Twin Peaks: The Return is no ordinary TV show. As sequel to the equally audacious ’90s series, The Return broke the boundaries for what television was capable of, spearheaded by an auteur who paid no attention to TV formats or narrative arcs. Even Lynch once called the series “an 18-hour movie,” telling Variety, “Television and cinema to me are exactly the same thing. Telling a story with motion, pictures and sound. It ended up being 18 hours.”

Should A TV Series Be Considered a Movie?

With the rise of prestigious serialized dramas and binge-watching, more showrunners have been proclaiming their TV shows to be “x-hour movies” that should be watched in one setting. Case in point: the Duffer Brothers’ insistence on calling the second season of Stranger Things “Stranger Things 2” because they wanted the season to be treated like a cohesive nine-hour movie.

Serialized TV only started to pick up after HBO, which then proudly asserted that “it’s not TV,” produced groundbreaking, cinematic series like The Sopranos, Sex and the City, and The Wire, changing the landscape of television. Since then (and the introduction of Netflix’s binge-watching model) TV that looks cinematic and plays like a movie has been often considered more prestigious than episodic television shows. But this is not a newfound sentiment – it’s part of a years-long perception that movies are superior to TV. Film and TV critic Matt Zoller-Seitz wrote a shrewd (and long) Twitter thread on this whole debate on what constitues movies and TV. I’ll post a few of his most astute points, though I encourage reading the whole thread:

Zoller-Seitz nails down that disparity between television and movies: they’re two different mediums that, at their best, look and sound completely different. Episodic television should not be looked down on when some of the best hours of television come from standalone episodes. And neither should shows that don’t look “cinematic” —  Buffy the Vampire Slayer looks awful but it tells its stories just as brilliantly as a movie could. Perhaps even more so! TV shows have more time to develop characters and arcs than a two-hour movie. And any movie that takes more than an hour to establish its plot and premise is not that great of a movie.

Lynch worked in TV before and dealt with all the limits of network television, which may explain his reluctance to describe Twin Peaks: The Return as a TV show. But perhaps Twin Peaks is simply a brilliant TV show that doesn’t need to be “elevated” to the label of “movie.”

Amazon’s iOS app inexplicably adds photo stickers https://briefnews.eu/amazons-ios-app-inexplicably-adds-photo-stickers/ https://briefnews.eu/amazons-ios-app-inexplicably-adds-photo-stickers/#respond Thu, 25 May 2017 00:45:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amazons-ios-app-inexplicably-adds-photo-stickers/

Back in February, Amazon added its product- and barcode-recognition technology, “Flow,” to its iOS shopping app. The feature had its own standalone app, but bringing it to the main one let users scan items using their smartphone’s camera and add to their account’s lists. The latest version, updated yesterday, added something a little extra: Stickers. You know, the ones all the messaging services and social mediums are adding. Except these are stickers of actual products that you can click on to buy.

To find them, open the app, tap the camera icon to the right of the search bar and find the “Amazon Stickers” button on the left of the bottom bar. This opens up a menu of stickers organized by categories, and every one links to that product on Amazon. Simple. Once you place the sticker, click the “i” button to go its page. (The click-through feature is disabled when you save the image — and then it’s just a regular ‘ol goofy image with a big white border.)

Seeing the internet titan try to integrate social media trinkets into its shopping app is as amusing as it is bizarre, especially since the rest of the app is dedicated to price-matching or adding items to a buy-later list. You could obviously aim the app at your empty living room and drop a product’s sticker in to see how it would look, though the thick white border makes it awkward to get a real feel. It’s not a terribly elegant mix of Amazon’s product-hunting app and conversational gimmick, but if you have to look to fads for new functionality, perhaps that’s better than not trying at all.

‘I’ll kill you!’: Fist fight inexplicably breaks out aboard long-haul flight (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/ill-kill-you-fist-fight-inexplicably-breaks-out-aboard-long-haul-flight-video/ https://briefnews.eu/ill-kill-you-fist-fight-inexplicably-breaks-out-aboard-long-haul-flight-video/#respond Wed, 03 May 2017 04:07:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ill-kill-you-fist-fight-inexplicably-breaks-out-aboard-long-haul-flight-video/ It came out of the clear blue sky. Two men threw punches across rows of seats on an All Nippon Airways (ANA) flight from Tokyo to Los Angeles. Even a flight attendant got in the mix.

On Monday, Corey Hour, an Arizona-based photographer and cinematographer, captured footage of two unidentified men brawling on ANA Flight NH6 at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport just minutes before takeoff.

According to Hour, while the plane was still boarding, he heard one man in a red shirt turn around and tell another man that he was “going to kill him.”

“He literally just flipped,” Hour told the Washington Post. “Nobody knows why.”

“Someone, help!” a man in a black shirt can be heard yelling in between blows. “This guy is crazy!”

“I’ll kill you!” the man in the red shirt yells back.

Children can be heard crying as flight attendants rush in to stop the fight.

Hour said the man wearing black was only fighting defensively and “wasn’t trying to start anything,” according to KNBC. “He was a very calm, collected individual.”

After taking several hits to the face, the man in red was removed by the female flight attendants.

Moments later, the man in the now ripped red shirt returned for a rematch. This time, when the female flight attendant got between the men, she was hit in the face by the man in red.

At that point, Hour stopped filming and got up to intervene in the fight. But as soon as he approached the man in the red shirt, Hour claims he backed away, refusing to fight.

“It was intense, and we had to step in,” Hour told the Washington Post, adding that the man in the red shirt yelled: “You think I’m crazy? What about the government?”

Hour told ABC Radio that the man seemed to “have a strong hate for the government.”

After leaving the plane, the man in the red shirt was arrested and charged with assault after choking an employee at the airport, according to Japan Today.

A statement released by the airline after the incident confirms the man was “dealt with appropriately by local law enforcement,” according to KGO.

Hour told the Post that the flight, which had already been delayed due to weather conditions, was further delayed while airline employees unloaded all the checked bags from the flight to remove the man’s luggage before taking off. The flight finally left an hour and 40 minutes late.

Hour later tweeted that the crew and passengers “handled the situation with grace and respect” and “did the best they could to diffuse the situation.” However, after talking with the other passengers, he tweeted that no one was able to figure out why the fight happened in the first place.

South Indian frog oozes molecule that inexplicably decimates flu viruses https://briefnews.eu/south-indian-frog-oozes-molecule-that-inexplicably-decimates-flu-viruses/ https://briefnews.eu/south-indian-frog-oozes-molecule-that-inexplicably-decimates-flu-viruses/#respond Wed, 19 Apr 2017 20:15:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/south-indian-frog-oozes-molecule-that-inexplicably-decimates-flu-viruses/

From the slimy backs of a South Indian frog comes a new way to blast influenza viruses.

A compound in the frog’s mucus—long known to have germ-killing properties—can latch onto flu virus particles and cause them to burst apart, researchers report in Immunity. The peptide is a potent and precise killer, able to demolish a whole class of flu viruses while leaving other viruses and cells unharmed. But scientists don’t know exactly how it pulls off the viral eviscerations. No other antiviral peptide of its ilk seems to work the same way.

The study authors, led by researchers at Emory University, note that the peptide appears uniquely nontoxic—something that can’t be said of many other frog-based compounds. Thus, the peptide on its own holds promise of being a potential therapy someday. But simply figuring out how it works could move researchers closer to a vaccine or therapy that could take out all flus, ditching the need for yearly vaccinations for each season’s flavor of flu.
