A magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit 173 kilometers north-north-west of the Maluku Islands in Indonesia, the US Geological Survey reported. Located in the Molucca Sea Collision Zone, the quakes are common for the isles, as well as volcanic eruptions. The Sunday quake, which centered at the depth of some 60 kilometers, did not trigger a warning from the US Tsunami Warning System.

JAKARTA (Reuters) – A tsunami killed at least 43 people on the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra and injured hundreds following an underwater landslide caused by a volcanic eruption, the disaster mitigation agency said on Sunday.

Some 584 people were injured and hundreds of homes and other buildings were “heavily damaged” in the tsunami which struck late on Saturday.

At least 20 people have been killed as a tidal wave hit beaches around Sunda Strait in Indonesia on Saturday night, according to the country’s Disaster Mitigation Agency. Another 165 have been injured.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) said the wave was not caused by an earthquake, but was possibly the result of volcanic activity at Mount Krakatoa.

Video filmed at one of the affected beaches and posted on Twitter shows the wave rolling in as beachgoers scramble away from the water.

More evidence supporting the theory that faulty sensor data caused the crash of a Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX in October has emerged from the aircraft’s flight data recorder. A report released on November 28 by Indonesian crash investigators shows that the pilots of Lion Air Flight 610 fought with the aircraft’s maneuvering characteristics augmentation system, or MCAS, nearly from the moment the jet took off from Jakarta on October 29. And the aircraft had suffered from a similar problem on a flight from Bali to Jakarta the day before—a flight that was completed safely after the pilot shut down the 737 MAX’s automatic anti-stall system.

“In our view, the plane was not airworthy” during its previous flight, said Nurcahyo Utomo, head of Indonesia’s national transport safety committee (KNKT), in a press conference today in Jakarta. Utomo faulted Lion Air’s maintenance and safety culture in the crash, though a final finding on the cause of the crash is likely months away.

The 737 MAX lost in the crash had repeatedly had problems with its airspeed and angle of attack (AOA) sensors, both of which feed into the MCAS system. One of the AOA sensors on the lost aircraft was replaced after the problems on the flight from Bali to Jakarta the day before, and the plane was put back into service. The MCAS uses inputs from these sensors to detect if the aircraft is likely to stall—losing enough lift to stay airborne—and automatically adjust control surfaces. Those adjustments would push the nose of the aircraft down to increase the lift generated by the wings with a combination of improved air flow over the wings and increased airspeed.

A plane operated by the low-cost Indonesian airline Lion Air crashed while on a domestic flight from Jakarta. It’s the first crash ever for Boeing’s new 737 MAX 8 model.

“It has been confirmed that it has crashed,” Yusuf Latif, a spokesman for the Indonesian rescue agency, said, as cited by Reuters. The plane was on its way from the Indonesian capital, Jakarta to the city of Pangkal Pinang on Sumatra, a flight slightly longer than an hour.

Latif said that the jet lost contact with air traffic control 13 minutes into the flight, and crashed into the sea.

The plane requested an emergency landing almost immediately after it took off, Sindu Rahayu of the Air Transportation Directorate General said at a press conference. He added that the authorities lost contact with the plane after the request.

The plane was packed with 189 passengers and crew, Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency said. At least 23 government officials were on board, Reuters reports.

Flight tracking service Flightradar24 says preliminary flight data shows a drop in the plane’s altitude and increase in speed before the transmission was cut. The plane appears to have plunged into the sea just off the coast of Indonesia, data provided by the service shows. It was reportedly at an altitude of 3,650 feet (about 1,112m) when the signal was lost.

The plane was built recently, with about 800 flight hours, the head of Indonesia’s national transportation safety committee (KNKT), Dr. Soerjanto Tjahjono, said. Lion Air has confirmed that the plane was airworthy and was piloted by an experienced crew. Its pilot and co-pilot had clocked in 11,000 flight hours together. The common number of flight hours for a pilot in a year is around 1,000.

The authorities will not speculate on the cause of the tragedy until the black box is retrieved and they receive a recording from an air traffic control post, Tjahjono said, as cited by The Strait Times.The newspaper reported that the plane could have carried about 20 Finance Ministry staff.

Debris from the plane, including seats, has been found floating in the Java sea near a facility belonging to state oil firm Pertamina, a company official told Reuters. Sailors on a nearby tugboat were reportedly the first witnesses of the crash.

A search and rescue operation has been launched, with divers sent to search for possible survivors in the submerged wreckage.

A video showing numerous vessels approaching the apparent crash site has been posted. No survivors can be seen in the footage.

The first images purportedly showing debris scattered in the sea have appeared on social media.

Photos circulating on social media also appear to show passenger belongings and torn pieces of the plane’s fuselage recovered by the rescuers.

The plane had a “technical issue” on a previous flight, which “had been resolved according to procedure,” Edward Sirait, the chief executive of Lion Air Group, said. However, he declined to specify the nature of the problem.

Flight JT610 is operated by a Boeing-737 Max 8, capable of seating up to 210 passengers. It is one of the newest Boeing models, which just entered service in May 2017. Flightradar24 says that the plane was delivered to Lion Air in August.

Two shallow earthquakes have occurred near the eastern Indonesian island of Sumba, but no tsunami warning was issued.

A series of powerful aftershocks, ranging between 5 and 5.9 in magnitude, have rattled Indonesia just days after a deadly earthquake and tsunami wreaked havoc across the island of Sulawesi, killing hundreds.

The most powerful 5.9-magnitude quake was recorded at 10.6 km depth some 37 km South of Nggongi, USGS said. The earthquake, which struck at 11:59pm GMT, was preceded by a 5.2 jolt 25 km north of Palu about 15 minutes earlier.

PALU, Indonesia (Reuters) – The toll from an earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia soared to 832 confirmed dead on Sunday, with authorities fearing the numbers will climb as rescuers grappled to get aid to outlying communities cut off from communications and help.

Dozens of people were reported to be trapped in the rubble of several hotels and a mall in the city of Palu, on Sulawesi island, which was hit by waves as high as six meters (20 feet) following the 7.5 magnitude earthquake on Friday.

Indonesia was ravaged by both a tsunami and an earthquake last night in a horrible disaster that has seen at least 384 people killed. So what’s the latest travel advice to the region?

Sulawesi island, Indonesia was struck by a 7.5 magnitude quake 6.02pm local time on Friday. The earthquake triggered a tsunami in the following hour, severely damaging the coastal city of Palu city, home to 350,000 people. Several aftershocks have been felt today.

Thousands of homes and buildings have collapsed and authorities have warned that the current death toll could increase as rescue workers hunt for survivors and 29 people are reported missing. More than 540 are being treated in hospital.

Hundreds of people were gathered for a festival on Palu’s beach at the time when the 497mph wave hit. Indonesia’s disaster agency has said that many people on the beach didn’t immediately run when the threat arose and tragically found themselves victims of tsunami. Many bodies have been found along the shoreline.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) have now updated the travel advice to the region.

“Following reports of an earthquake of magnitude 7.7 in Central Sulawesi, the British Embassy in Jakarta is liaising with the Indonesian authorities to establish facts,” the FCO website states.

“You should be aware of the risk of aftershocks. If you are in the area monitor local news and follow the advice of the local authorities.”

The airport in Palu – Mutiara Sis Al Jufri Airport – has been closed after suffering damages to its navigation system, reported The Jakarta Post. It’s expected to remain shut until Saturday night.

Additionally, 500m of the airport’s 2,500m-long subway has also been damaged by the earthquake, meaning large aircraft are unable to land.

Flights to and from the airport between Makassar and Palu have also been cancelled. 

Airport Duty Manager Elet Sutriyanto said in a statement: “In accordance with the information released by Airnav in the form of NOTAM [Notice to Airmen] of the closure of Sis Al Jufri Airport in Palu, automatically the flights from Makassar to Palu are also cancelled.”

Fortunately, the remaining, undamaged section of the airport’s runway can still be used for Hercules cargo aircraft.

The Indonesian navy has deployed several such logistic planes to bring in technicians, supplies and rescue teams.

The main tremor struck at 6:02 pm local time (12.02pm BST) about 35 miles northeast of Donggala, Indonesia according to the US Geological Survey. 

Soon after, a tsunami warning was issued by Indonesia’s geophysics agency, before being lifted. After the tsunami warning was lifted, a huge wave struck Donggala and Palu, a coastal town of about 330,000 residents.

Footage from the Indonesia island captured the moment the huge wave struck the coast submerging homes and quickly reaching high buildings.

Onlookers can be heard screaming as the water approaches before fleeing away. The screen briefly turns to black before returning to capture footage of the devastated surroundings. 

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency BNPB, described the damage to Palu as “extensive” with thousands of buildings destroyed or washed away.

Authorities trying to carry out rescues have said this morning a massive power outage that cut communications around Palu following the tsunami has hampered their efforts.

International aid charity Humanitarian Relief tweeted: “Nearly 400 people died and scores of people were injured in #Palu city in Sulawesi Island of #Indonesia that hit by a major earthquake and tsunami yesterday.

“There are difficulties in reaching #Donggala city, so there is no reliable information for the casualties.”

Last month, a series of earthquakes struck the Indonesian island of Lombok, killing hundreds. The biggest earthquake struck on August 5, killing more than 460.
