Of the 5,712 American Indian and Alaska Native girls and women reported missing in 2016, only 116 of those were logged in the Department of Justice’s federal missing persons database, NamUs, and the real number of missing women is likely to be even higher due to underreporting, racial misclassification and a lack of coordination between tribal and state authorities.

Murder is the third-leading cause of death among indigenous women, according to the Centers for Disease Control, which also found violence on reservations occurs at ten times the national average. While this figure understandably gets a lot of attention, authorities lack similar numbers for American Indians and Alaskan Natives living in cities – which is almost three quarters of them. Seattle’s Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI)’s report is an attempt to fill that knowledge gap, and their findings suggest urban violence against indigenous women is massively underreported.

There was no clear pattern to the cases UIHI found, with victims as young as infants and as old as 83. In less than a hundred of the 506 cases studied, researchers were able to establish a link to overarching issues like sexual assault, domestic violence, prostitution and police brutality, much less identify the victim’s relationship to the perpetrator. The rest remain a mystery.

Law enforcement departments were reluctant to turn over information on Native American victims, and many did not respond to repeated requests; much of what researchers did receive was incomplete or wrong. Alaska State Troopers allegedly refused to provide data because the large volume of Native female homicides made dredging up all the records “too burdensome” for their staff. Perhaps most troublingly, 153 of the cases UIHI studied simply do not exist in law enforcement records. To attempt to fill the gaps, researchers combed media coverage, social media, and other government databases, in addition to interviewing communities.

Underreporting of crimes against indigenous women is a chronic problem in the US. While they are 2.5 times more likely to be raped or assaulted than their non-Native counterparts, another UIHI report released earlier this year revealed only 20 percent of indigenous victims reported their assaults. Given that US attorneys decline to prosecute almost half of cases that occur on tribal lands, victims’ reluctance to step forward is understandable – that same report found only 8 percent of reports to police led to the perpetrator’s conviction.

An old Aztec ball game dating back to 1500 BC really heated up in Mexico city Saturday as teams battled for possession of a flaming ball of fire.

Pelota purepecha is an indigenous ball game during which players use sticks to hit the ball around the pitch in a game that is similar to hockey, minus the flames.  

“I kept playing because, apart from the discipline that it instills in you in a sporting sense, it also gives me values that make me redeemable within this current culture, for example: honourability, always striving for your goals,” player Miguel Angel Yachinto Lopez told Ruptly.

Before the game begins, players engage in a ritual to ask the gods to protect them. Pelota purepecha has been credited with stopping people from entering crime and engaging in violence.

“We want to leave certain violent circles. So for many of us, the game has rescued us both athletically and spiritually,”  Lopez said.

Taipei’s annual Dream Parade—a cacophonous riot of color honoring Taiwan’s aboriginal villagers (and funded by a local property magnate)—has been likened to Rio’s Carnivàle and the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Mark Daffey dives in.

Dressed in guises designed to replicate banana peels, wizened old women turn back the clock with a zestful vigor that belies their years. Bespectacled men, their decorative attire ablaze with what appear to be licks of fire, rattle tambourines while braying rhythmic chants. Latino-looking samba dancers frolic in step with the locals, never missing a beat, each costume as outrageous it is eye-catching. Suffice to say, it’s not your typical Taiwanese scene.

Welcome to Taipei’s Dream Parade, an annual street festival that’s part-musical jamboree, part-dance fiesta and part-fancy dress party, with more than a smattering of beauty pageantry added to the recipe.

The highlight of the parade is arguably the number of teams vying for first prize in the samba drumming competition, with judges posted along the parade route critiquing their skills, costumes, choreography and enthusiasm. While samba drumming is not an aboriginal tradition, Tsai believes it helps to preserve rural culture as more and more young people move to the cities for work.

Contestants are typically schoolchildren drawn from aboriginal villages around Taiwan, each first having gone through an elimination process prior to undertaking the journey to Taipei. With upwards of a thousand drummers pounding away, the din is loud enough to trick seismic indicators into thinking that disaster is afoot.

Prizes are also awarded to the person adjudged the most beautiful samba girl, and to Tsai’s ‘samba grannies’—elderly participants who best embody the spirit of living life to its fullest. For some, it seems, the party never stops.
