Russian President Vladimir Putin, right, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pose for a photo shaking hands prior to their talks on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Friday, Sept. 16, 2022.

  • Some of Putin's global partners expressed concerns about his war in Ukraine last week.
  • Days later, Putin escalated the war by announcing military mobilization and threatening nuclear warfare.
  • A Russia expert told Insider Putin may have acted out of fear of straining relationships with nations like China and India.

Russian President Vladimir Putin escalated his unprovoked war on Ukraine this week, just days after some of his supposed partners publicly expressed doubt over it — and the events may well be related.

Since invading Ukraine in February, Russia has been shunned by much of the world and faced crippling sanctions from the West. But as Russia grew more isolated, some nations have either stood by Putin or avoided directly condemning him.

Both China and India have been powerful partners of Russia throughout the war, declining to institute sanctions and continuing to purchase the country's energy products. However, leaders of both countries recently took the rare step of speaking against the war.

During a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Uzbekistan on September 15, Putin acknowledged Xi had "questions and concerns" regarding the war. The following day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the war during a face-to-face meeting with Putin.

"I know that today's era is not an era of war, and I have spoken to you on the phone about this," Modi told Putin, Reuters reported.

Putin responded: "I know about your position on the conflict in Ukraine, and I know about your concerns. We want all of this to end as soon as possible."

Less than a week later, on Wednesday, Putin said he was calling up 300,000 reservists to join the fight, something he had avoided doing for fear of backlash among the Russian people. The announcement, in which he also threatened to use nuclear weapons, came after the Ukrainian military made major gains in recent weeks.

Experts told Insider it would be weeks or months before the mobilized troops are trained, equipped, and deployed. They also said Putin's decision to take this step now showed how poorly the war was going for Russia and how desperate the Russian leader was to turn the tide.

"That Putin would do this shows how badly he feels the need right now to change the momentum, which has been all in Ukraine's favor," Daniel Treisman, a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, whose work focuses on Russian politics and economics, told Insider.

In addition to fearing another potential counteroffensive by Ukraine, Putin was likely also driven by Xi's and Modi's concerns — and his fear of losing key partners — according to Robert English, a professor at the University of Southern California who studies Russia, the Soviet Union, and Eastern Europe.

"The evidence of criticism of allies like China or neutral states like India clearly put more pressure on him," English told Insider. He added that leaders of those nations seem to have told Putin they did not approve of the situation in Ukraine because it was harming their reputations on the world stage and costing them economically and politically.

English said what he suspects Putin heard was: "'Find some way to settle this quick, to wind this war down, because we will not remain at your side for another six months of this brutality.'"

"He heard a message like that, so he's trying to up the ante," English said. "He's trying to change the military balance the best way he can."

If Putin has mobilized troops in an effort to end the war as quickly as possible, as he assured Modi he would seek to do, it's not at all clear if it will be successful.

"It's an unsatisfactory and inadequate response to the motivation, manpower, and materiel on the Ukrainian side," English said, explaining that military aide and intelligence from the West has given Ukraine an advantage on the battlefield. "It's not going to do the job."

A worker loads Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders onto his cycle-rickshaw in Kolkata, India

  • India is scrambling to replace canceled Russian gas deliveries, driving GAIL India to pay $ 40 per million BTUs for LNG.
  • That's the most expensive LNG cargo to ship to India in history, traders told Bloomberg.
  • It's also a sign India is struggling to fill the hole in Russian supplies after a Gazprom branch was seized by Germany.

India is scrambling to replace canceled Russian gas deliveries, causing one gas company to pay for the nation's most expensive liquefied natural gas cargo in history.

GAIL India, the largest gas distributor in the country, purchased three LNG cargoes last week for over $ 40 per million British thermal units, traders familiar with the matter told Bloomberg on Monday. Those are record prices for any LNG cargo to be delivered to India, more than doubling the prices paid last year.

It's also a sign the country is struggling to fill the hole in Russian supplies, as competition with energy-strapped Europe has driven natural gas prices to sky-high levels.

India has become one of Russia's largest fuel customers since the invasion of Ukraine, but some of those flows have been interrupted as the result of Germany seizing a local branch of Russia's Gazprom, using that plant to direct supplies to Europe instead ahead of winter.

The plant, which was renamed as Securing Energy for Europe, told GAIL that it no longer had supplies for India, and is currently paying a small fine for not delivering promised LNG shipments in October.

GAIL attempted negotiation with the plant last month, according to GAIL chairman Manoh Jain, but no new deal has been announced yet.

Jain claimed last month that failed deliveries from the plant only affected 10%-15% of India's gas supplies and were not significant, Reuters reported, although he noted that the company was concerned about securing gas supplies in the long-term.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wa.) at her home on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2022, in Seattle, Wash

  • Rep. Pramila Jayapal says former President Trump's rhetoric encourages violence against Congress members.
  • Jayapal released voicemails on Thursday that included threats to "go back to India."
  • Capitol Police data shows that threats to members of Congress have increased 144% since 2017.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who was harassed and threatened outside her home by a man with a gun, says the increase in threats to Congressional members is linked to rhetoric about the 2020 election by former President Donald Trump and other members of the GOP.

In July, an armed man was arrested and charged with felony stalking after camping outside Jayapal's neighborhood and threatening her. One neighbor told police she heard the man shout: "Go back to India, I'm going to kill you."

Jayapal told MSNBC's Ali Velshi on Saturday that she wanted people to understand the connections between stolen election rhetoric and the increased threats that Congressional members are facing.

"I think that what has changed is there's a sense that everything is so unfair and it's been propelled by Donald Trump," Jayapal said. "'The institutions are unfair,' and that the only recourse is to violence and that is an extremely dangerous thing. And we saw it come to fruition on January 6, and now in ways that you know, I've seen outside my door."

On Thursday, Jayapal released voicemails of threats against her and her family. The person in the recording tells Jayapal she is going to get "exactly what you deserve" and tells her to "go back to India."

"Typically, political figures don't show their vulnerability," Jayapal wrote. "I chose to do so here because we cannot accept violence as our new norm. We also cannot accept the racism and sexism that underlies and propels so much of this violence."

Threats to lawmakers in congress have increased by 144% since 2022, according to Capitol Police data shared with Axios. In the first three months of 2022, nearly 2,000 threats made to Congress members resulted in the Capitol Police opening cases.

Congress members like California Rep. Eric Swalwell and Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who is on the House Committee Investigating Jan. 6, have also released threatening voicemails targeting them and their families.

In a Washington Post profile released Thursday, Jayapal recounted her experiences dealing with harassing and threatening voicemails. She said she often wanted to hide the threats because she didn't want people to know how they emotionally affected her.

"But at the same time," Jayapal told the Post, "it's important people understand how ubiquitous this is, and how much a part of our psyche it is taking up."

  1. TAJ MAHAL

Built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his loving wife, Taj Maal is an ivory white mausoleum carved out of marble. This remarkable structure of marble is renowned as the symbol of love. This piece of art by the Mughals proudly stands as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Located at the southern shore of Yamuna river, Taj Mahal is a beautiful sight and there is also a local market called Haat bazaar in its premises from where one can buy handicraft items and much more. This is one of the most fantastically constructed Muslim architectures in India and is reckoned as world’s heritage

Don’t miss it!

  1. MEHTAB BAGH

Taj Mahal viewed from Methab Bagh

Located on the bank of Yamuna, just opposite Taj Mahal, Mehtab Bagh is the last garden constructed by Mughals. Developed by Babur, this crescent shaped garden is known as moonlit pleasure garden.

Opposed to the common misconception, Mehtab bagh was built way before Taj Mahal came into existence and from this garden itself, Shah Jahan choose the right spot to build Taj.

This garden is famous for the Reflection pond which gives the perfect reflection of Taj Mahal. The garden harbors step fountain, sandstone domes, vibrant flowers and green area, making it a perfect place for picnics or romantic walks.

If you are visiting Taj Mahal, then try this place too to get some rest amongst the nature.

  1. GHATS OF VARANASI

In the words of Mark Twain, ‘Varanasi is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together’. Varanasi is the oldest city of the nation and holds a special place in the mythological scriptures and beliefs.

The city is believed to be the abode of Gods and will give you a feeling of spiritual calm.

The city is famous for its Ghats which are around 84 in number including the Manikarnika ghat, Dashaswamedha ghat, Raj ghat and many more.

All these ghats hold fascinating stories which might even give you chills. One such story is about the Manikarnika Ghat and the ear rings. Some say that it is the place where an earring of Lord Vishnu fell which he had made from his Sudarshan chakra, while some folklores support that at this ghat Goddess Parvati hid her earrings and asked Lord Shiva to seek them. Many believe that Lord Shiva asks the departing souls for those earrings.

One of the most popular ghats of the city- Dashashwamedha ghat, is believed to be created by Lord Bhrama himself to worship Lord Shiva.

All this mythical stories and the breathtaking scenes of these ghats are something you must not miss. Who knows, you might even see Lord Shiva in his quest to find the earrings.

  1. KASHI VISHWANATH TEMPLE

A piece of constructive beauty of the 1780s, Kashi Vishwanath Temple is a huge sacred temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Popularized by the name of Golden Temple for Shiva, this holy structure was created by Maharani Ahilya Devi Hoklar of Indore.

With one of the Jyotirlingas, this shrine has been enlisted in various Hindu mythological scriptures, making it sacred and holy.

The exterior of the temple has intricate stone carvings of the historical era and around 800 kg gold platting.

The interiors of this temple are restricted for eyes only with no phones or cameras allowed inside.

Add this spot to your list as this place might bring you some inner complacency.

  1. CHATTAR MANZIL

Chattar Manzil, also known as Umbrella building is prolific piece of architecture flaunting its magnificent gilded umbrella like dome structure. Initially, the architecture was established in the year 1781 by Claud Martin, the building was later owned by Saadat Ali Khan. The ownership then shifted in the hands of Nawab Uddin Haider who started construction on the building.

Once the residence of The Nawabs of Awadh, Chattar Manzil is today the office of Central Drug Research Institute.

One interesting fact about the structure lies in its tehkhana (basement). The basements of the building are known to be build under water of Gomti River to keep them cool.

The matchless architecture and good location make this building an attraction for tourists and photographers.

Try to visit this place on your trip, may be you could find some gripping secrets in the tehkhana!

  1. KRISHNA JANAMA BHOOMI MANDIR

Located in the west of Mathura, this shrine is one of the most popular temples of the city Mathura. As the name suggests this temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and built around the jail cell where Krishna’s parents were imprisoned by his uncle Kans, and Lord Krishna was born.

It is said that once the holy place had a big gold statue of Lord Krishna but was stolen by Mahmud of Ghazni.

The interior of the sacred temple is loaded with paintings of life of Lord Krishna, Radha and his other beloved wives and family.

This is the perfect spot to visit if you wish to see the life and stories of Lord Krishna.

  1. KANS QILA

At the banks of river Yamuna stands the enormous fortress of Lord Krishna’s uncle- Kans. Famous for its mixed Hindu and Muslim architectural design, this fort is ardently visited by the pilgrims and tourists as a part of Lord Krishna’s life story.

This fort of the time of Mahabharat, also known as Purana Qila, is an inexplicable form of architecture holding a lot of historical facts inside its fortified walls for you to discover.

  1. FATEHPUR SIKHRI

Founded in the 16th century by Mughal Emperor Akbar, today stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This city is a beautiful blend of Mughal architecture and religious beliefs. It is believed that Fatehpur Sikri was established by Akbar in order to pay an honor to Sheikh Salim Chisti who predicted the birth of a Mughal heir. Made out of red sandstone, this historic creation is the home to- Jodha Bai’s palace, Jama Mosque, Buland Darwaza, and a Tomb of Salim Chisti, all of which serve as implicit sites of Indian Heritage.

At a distance of 40kms from Agra city, this place is a perfect one day visit to see the enriching creations of the mughals.

  1. MAHOBA’S SUN TEMPLE

Against the popular idea that The Konark Sun temple is the oldest Sun temple, Mahoba’s Sun temple is the oldest shrine to worship Sun, developed in 10th century.

Created by Chandela King Rahil Dev Varman, this visual treat is locally known as Rahiliya Temple.

Carved out of granite, this shrine has a garbha grahiya with an image of sun placed at a high platform of ornamental mouldings.

Just like the sun temple of Konark, Rahiliya temple is also a magnificent creation out of stone which astonishes the visitors.

The place is flooded by pilgrims during navratri poojas.

  1. CHAUKHANDI STUPA

Dating back to 5th century, this ancient piece of construction marks the reunion of Lord Buddha with the panch vargiya bhikshus (five companions) who separated from him at Rajgir.

The structure standing on the top of a rectangular dais is covered by an octagonal tower constructed by Akbar in 1589 A.D.

The gardens surrounding the stupa are generally filled with pilgrims making prayers to Lord Buddha. It is believed to be a blessing to be able to complete a kora around the stupa.

Some Buddha structures and other statues were excavated from the grounds of this stupa, making them pre historic artefacts.

Add this to your travel list and try your luck in completing circumambulation around the stupa.

MY FINAL WORDS

Uttar Pradesh appears to be a perfect mix of all the things good and worth watching. It is a state that must be on the list of all the travelers and pilgrims because it will satisfy your thirst for inner peace as well as your love for historical structures and stories.

I suggest you to take a stroll around the prestigious cities of this state and then you will agree with the phrase- UP Nhi Dekha Toh Kuch Nhi Dekha!

Samsung will fight its phone sales slump with models built for India https://briefnews.eu/samsung-will-fight-its-phone-sales-slump-with-models-built-for-india/ https://briefnews.eu/samsung-will-fight-its-phone-sales-slump-with-models-built-for-india/#respond Mon, 14 Jan 2019 10:05:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/samsung-will-fight-its-phone-sales-slump-with-models-built-for-india/

Samsung knows it’s facing tough times, and it’s not just counting on the Galaxy S10 to get out of its funk. It’s launching a trio of Galaxy M-series phones in late January that are designed expressly for “Indian millennial consumers,” the company’s Asim Warsi told Reuters. They’ll launch in India first before a wider rollout, and they’ll only be available through both Samsung’s website as well as Amazon India.

Warsi didn’t dive too far into specifics, but said the phones would cost between 10,000 to 20,000 rupees (about $ 142 to $ 284) and would include features that don’t always make their way to lower-cost phones, like beefy batteries and fast charging. Earlier leaks suggest the Galaxy M10, M20 and M30 would use newer mid-tier Exynos 7-series chips, feature “waterdrop” notch displays (think OnePlus 6T) and include at least one model with a giant 5,000mAh battery.

It’s no secret why Samsung is setting its sights on India: it’s a prime battleground. Chinese brands like Xiaomi and Vivo are thriving in the country, and Samsung is currently playing second fiddle with 22 percent. In theory, the Galaxy M line scoops up people who otherwise had their heart set on a Chinese device. Whether or not it works is another story. India’s phone space is fiercely competitive, and doing well there won’t necessarily be enough to offset problems in other parts of the world.

ITV Good Morning Britain: India Willoughby makes BIZARRE Brexit comparison to Adolf Hitler https://briefnews.eu/itv-good-morning-britain-india-willoughby-makes-bizarre-brexit-comparison-to-adolf-hitler/ https://briefnews.eu/itv-good-morning-britain-india-willoughby-makes-bizarre-brexit-comparison-to-adolf-hitler/#respond Fri, 11 Jan 2019 09:41:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/itv-good-morning-britain-india-willoughby-makes-bizarre-brexit-comparison-to-adolf-hitler/

Former Celebrity Big Brother contestant India, 51, joined the Good Morning Britain debate with Tom Church, who revealed he was stockpiling food for Brexit in anticipation of there being problems with the food trucks at British ports.

India was completely flabbergasted by her debate partner’s thought process on preparing for the worst, as she stated how the ports have said the food trucks are going to be “flowing as normal”.

But when Tom held fast to his determination to make sure he had enough “Chicken Korma” ingredients in his cupboards on March 30th, the day after Britain officially leaves the European Union, India proceeded to call him bonkers.

She then used the example of German dictator and leader of the Nazi Party Hitler’s actions during the Second World War, stating Britain has faced worse prospects in modern history than running out of their favourite foods on the ITV show.

Explaining his reasons, Tom said: “Yeah so I’ve started stockpiling for Brexit, lots of food for about a month. I’ve got bags, lots of things in the cupboards, filling it up, because I’m worried that in the immediate aftermath of Brexit – so March 29th – that there will be problems with our truck drivers basically.

“Extra checks, that will delay trucks, and that has a real impact on our ‘just in time’ supply chain across the country.”

“India it doesn’t sound like such an outlandish decision, we can buy a Brexit box now for £295 that will serve you for a month,” presenter Ben, 41, offered.

But the journalist was utterly bemused by the prospect, saying: “God are we going to Pluto? I mean look at it, it looks like something you would feed your plant.

“I would rather eat a remainer, I think it would be more nourishing. I mean really let’s just cut to the chase here, if you think a Brexit baked bean brocade is going to bring it to the brink you are bonkers!”

“Stock up on some tin foil! The port has said the trucks are going to be flowing as normal, the Mayor of Calais said it’s business as normal too. Where are all these stories coming from?” she exclaimed.

The transgender activist continued in frustration, as she suddenly declared: “Hitler was sinking our ships!”

“[So I just think] the British are better than that.”

The rest of the studio were taken-aback by her comparison, but Tom quickly agreed.

“India I get what you’re saying, you’re saying we survived the war is what you’re saying, so we can survive this [and not run out of food].

“But how did we do that? Food rationing,” the guest declared with a flourish.

Laughing, India finally said: “Come March 29th, I’m going to go into my local supermarket, spend an hour there, pick all of my favourite foods, and then I’m going to have a big dinner celebrating Brexit!”

Unimpressed with the direction the discussion had taken, viewers took to Twitter to share their views.

One person wrote: “What the hell does Hitler have to do with Brexit?! #GMB”

“Why is she going on about Hitler? #gmb,” another asked.

A third raged: “#gmb ffs. Who the F is India Willoughby. Pulling the Hitler card so early. Brexit IS a con. Don’t believe the hype stupid person.”

While a fourth countered the argument, agreeing with Tom: “I’ve built a bombproof cellar. I’ve got enough food and water for six months. There is an electric fence around the garden and there are guard dogs roaming the property. I will then eat the dogs when the food runs out! You b******s won’t catch me out! #gmb.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.

Millions of Indian women have joined hands along the roads and highways of Kerala state on the first day of the year 2019 to send a strong message of gender equality.

The ‘Women’s Wall’ rally or Vanitha Mathil gathered some 3 million females from all ages and walks of life. The 620km human chain, multicolored from the women’s dresses, could be one of the largest in the world.

The protest was prompted by a row over women’s access to a prominent Sabarimala shrine in Kerala. The Hindu temple was historically closed to women of “menstruating age.” Though India’s top court overturned the ban in September, male visitors have since attacked female pilgrims. The latest incident took place several days ago when a massive crowd of male pilgrims tried to prevent two women of menstruating age from reaching the holy site.

The event lasted for 15 minutes, during which the participants pledged that they would “stand for equality for women,” “resist the attempts to make Kerala a lunatic asylum,” and “fight for secularism.”

‘Embargo on predatory pricing’: India fights back against e-commerce giants with new antitrust rules https://briefnews.eu/embargo-on-predatory-pricing-india-fights-back-against-e-commerce-giants-with-new-antitrust-rules/ https://briefnews.eu/embargo-on-predatory-pricing-india-fights-back-against-e-commerce-giants-with-new-antitrust-rules/#respond Thu, 27 Dec 2018 04:36:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/embargo-on-predatory-pricing-india-fights-back-against-e-commerce-giants-with-new-antitrust-rules/ India is standing up to transnational e-commerce behemoths like Amazon and Flipkart Group with new rules barring companies from selling products from companies they partially own.

E-commerce companies will no longer be able to sell products from companies in which they have an equity interest, nor will they be able to form exclusive agreements with sellers or apply cash-back offers and other incentives to affiliate sellers differently than they apply to non-affiliates, according to new rules which take effect February 1.

The new rules are aimed at clamping down on monopolistic behavior by gargantuan transnational e-tailers. Amazon, Flipkart and other large companies are currently able to undercut the prices of their competitors by buying products in bulk through companies they control and re-selling to affiliates, which then set their prices low enough to drive non-affiliated firms out of the market.

Indian retailers, concerned that their days are numbered with such “predatory pricing” practices dominating the market, successfully pushed back with a series of anti-trust petitions earlier this year that have culminated in the new regulations.

The All India Online Vendors Association (AIOVA) filed a petition in October with the Competition Commission of India, the body charged with enforcing anti-trust matters, alleging that Amazon gives preferential treatment to those sellers in which it has an equity interest. The group filed a similar petition against Flipkart in May.

The Confederation of All India Traders had objected to Walmart’s $ 16 billion acquisition of Flipkart in May, warning that the move would create exactly the “unfair competition” and “predatory pricing” the new rules seek to address. CAIT secretary general approvingly stated that the new rules, if implemented in full, would put an “embargo on the tactics adopted by the global players to control and dominate retail trade in India through e-commerce.”

Beefed-up regulations have come not a minute too soon, with Google introducing Google Shopping to India earlier this month.
