Megyn Kelly is reevaluating her stance on blackface. Just hours after stating on-air that it isn’t “racist” for white people to darken their skin with makeup on Halloween as long as they’re portraying an actual person or character, the host of Megyn Kelly Today on Tuesday released an internal email to her staff, apologizing for her words. “One of the wonderful things about my job is that I get the chance to express and hear a lot of opinions,” Kelly wrote in the email. “Today is one of those days where listening carefully to other points of view, including from friends and colleagues, is leading me to rethink my own views. I realize now that such behavior is indeed wrong, and I am sorry. The history of blackface in our culture is abhorrent; the wounds too deep.” She continued, “I’ve never been a ‘pc’ kind of person — but I understand that we do need to be more sensitive in this day and age. Particularly on race and ethnicity issues which, far from being healed, have been exacerbated in our politics over the past year. This is a time for more understanding, love, sensitivity and honor, and I want to be part of that. I look forward to continuing that discussion.” You can watch Kelly’s original remarks in this clip below:
For the record, this isn’t the first time Kelly has come under fire for racially insensitive remarks she’s made while on the air. During a Fox News segment in 2013 about Santa Claus being depicted as a race other than white, she said, “Just because it makes you feel uncomfortable doesn’t mean it has to change. You know, I mean, Jesus was a white man too.” Yikes. Your thoughts on Kelly’s blackface scandal? Drop ’em in a comment below.

Scotland Yard earlier issued a statement that was apparently from Yulia Skripal, the daughter of former double agent Sergei Skripal, who are both recovering from poisoning in the UK. British authorities have been accusing Moscow of poisoning the Skripals since day one of the case, allegations that Moscow firmly denies.
“If everything mentioned there is true we cannot but congratulate our compatriot,” the Russian Embassy said in reaction to the Yulia Skripal statement, which it dubbed “an interesting read.”
The embassy then called for verification that the words attributed to Yulia were indeed her own. “With no possibility to verify it, the publication by the Metropolitan Police raises new questions rather than gives answers,” the embassy’s message said. “As before, we would like to make sure that the statement really belongs to Yulia. So far, we doubt it much.”
The statement, in which Yulia Skripal refuses the proffered assistance of the Russian Embassy and asks her cousin Viktoria to avoid trying to contact her, seems to have been “composed in a special way so as to support official statements made by British authorities and at the same time to exclude every possibility of Yulia’s contacts with the outer world – consuls, journalists and even relatives,” the embassy said.
The part where the statement released by the Met Police talks about Yulia having “access to friends and family” has also raised questions. Yulia’s closest relatives, according to the embassy, are her cousin Viktoria and her grandmother Elena, Sergei Skripal’s mother, who live together. Seeing as how Yulia is refusing contacts with Viktoria, it is unclear what family the statement speaks of.
“Particularly amazing is the phrase ‘no one speaks for me’ appearing in a statement which, instead of being read on camera by Yulia herself, is published at Scotland Yard website,” the embassy said. The original statement also says Yulia is “not yet strong enough to give a full interview to the media.”
Before the London police released Yulia Skripal’s supposed statement, reports suggested that she had been moved to a secure, undisclosed location, “thought to be a well-guarded country house.” The Russian diplomatic mission then voiced worry that she was being “held hostage“ – which was not alleviated by the release of the official statement.
“To sum up, the document only strengthens suspicions that we are dealing with a forcible isolation of the Russian citizen. If British authorities are interested in assuring the public that this is not the case, they must urgently provide tangible evidence that Yulia is alright and not deprived of her freedom,” the embassy said.
Yulia Skripal and her father had spent several weeks in a coma following their poisoning on March 4 in the city of Salisbury, where Sergei lived after being exchanged in a spy swap in 2010. Yulia and Sergei only recently woke up, though, according to the statement attributed to Yulia, both are still “suffering with the effects of the nerve agent used against us.”

Roughly 18 months have passed since we first learned about Tesla’s plan to add an electric semi-truck, of all things, to its automotive product family. At the time, it was said to be in the early stages of development, and was expected to appear sometime in 2017. Lo and behold, this past April, we were crawling around a pair of Tesla Semi prototypes at the company’s Hawthorne, California, headquarters. Then in May, Musk took to the Twitter and claimed that the Semi would be unveiled in September . . . sigh (at least this is a month that ends in “ember”!). More important, it seems worth the wait.
–
“Like a Bullet”
–
As with Tesla’s other product reveals, the Semi was introduced at a huge Hollywood-style party filled with Tesla owners and fans, red carpet and all. Yes, a red carpet and multiple layers of security for a semi-truck introduction—that’s a first. And Musk wasted no time producing his two prototype rigs for the adoring throng to behold, both of which circled a vast expanse of asphalt in total silence before poking their sleek, sloped noses through the open hangar doors at the Jet Center in Hawthorne, California, adjacent to Tesla’s HQ.
–
“We designed the trucks to be like a bullet,” said Musk, and indeed, each of these day-cab trucks look as deliciously futuristic as one could hope them to look, particularly the low-roof matte-gray version—which turned out to be carrying some very precious cargo. With the exception of the windshield wipers and the exterior rearview mirrors, everything on the front and sides of the Semi’s body has been smoothed and flush mounted, including low-set headlamps, the upper clearance lights, and the Model 3–sourced door handles. The bottom of the truck is flat. Behind the cab are extendible panels that automatically detect the size and location of the trailer’s leading edges and extend out to meet them, effectively sealing them together from an aerodynamic standpoint. The wheels have aerodynamic covers, too, with the gray example featuring full skirting over the rear wheels. The coefficient of drag is a stunning 0.36.
–
–
Sitting in the Doghouse
–
Even more revolutionary, at least in contrast to the often cramped cabs of today’s big rigs, is the Semi’s interior, which we were allowed to crawl around in briefly before the official unveiling. First of all, access to the space is provided by a couple of steps mounted at a slope just inside the door, a relatively easy climb up compared to the repelling exercise most truckers endure every time they get in and out. Even in this day-cab form, the Tesla Semi’s low floor and tall ceiling allow one to stand up inside and easily walk over to the passenger seat on the other side of the cab or around to the center-mounted driver’s seat. That’s right: Without an engine protruding into the front center of the cab—its covered housing is known in trucker circles as the doghouse—the Tesla Semi places its driver front and center, affording him or her a commanding view forward and to the sides. Dual touchscreens flanking the steering wheel fully integrate all vehicle information, navigation, travel logs, and communications—say, with one’s dispatcher—without cluttering the space with ancillary components. And, yes, there’s a pull strap for the horn.
–
Mercy Sakes Alive! Zero to 60 in Five Seconds! 500-Mile Range! Powered by Sunlight!
–
The futuristic styling and captain-of-the-starship driving environment are nice, but what matters most to Tesla, insofar as Musk has the goal of proliferating electric technology across the transportation industry, lies beneath all that. Like the Model S and X, the Semi’s structure is built around its battery packs, which are located between the front and rear axles beneath the cabin, affording it an exceptionally low center of gravity. Both prototypes feature dual rear axles, with each of the four rear wheels powered by its own dedicated electric motor (borrowed from the Model 3). The lack of a transmission frees the driver from having to shift—which is a notoriously complicated process in many rigs—and reduces the amount of jostling inflicted on the cargo.
–
And this truck will be quick, even by passenger-car standards. A bobtail Tesla Semi will be able to hustle to 60 mph in a shocking five seconds, compared with 20 seconds for a typical diesel truck, according to Musk. Add a trailer heavy enough to bring the rig’s total weight to an 80,000-pound GVWR, and the Semi’s zero-to-60-mph time increases to a similarly remarkable 20 seconds. Up a 5 percent grade, that same trailer-totin’ Tesla Semi can maintain 65 mph, whereas, Musk claimed, “the best diesel trucks” today can only maintain 45 mph. Going fast, of course, isn’t really the point of these rigs, but as time lost is money lost to many drivers, Musk pointed out, a less sluggish truck can make a big difference to the folks who actually use these things. Interestingly, the truck can still run even if one or two of the motors fails, in which condition “it will still beat the diesel truck,” Musk said.
–
–
Range, of course, is perhaps the greatest consideration for customers of electric vehicles large or small. Tesla said that, thanks in part to regenerative brakes capable of returning a remarkable 98 percent of the kinetic energy to the battery, the Semi can travel 500 miles on a full charge. That’s roughly double the real-world range of Tesla’s next-largest vehicle, the Model X. And that’s at 60 mph, with maximum payload.
–
Moreover, the net efficiency gain of a Tesla Semi driver traveling in a convoy of more than two rigs rivals rail transport. A planned network of new solar-fed high-speed Megachargers can replenish the truck with enough juice to give it an additional 400 miles of range in 30 minutes—incidentally, the same amount of time required for a driver to take a break every six hours, Musk said. These Megachargers would be installed either at points of origin or along heavily trafficked routes, according to Tesla. Other helpful technology bits include anti-jackknife stability control, blind-spot monitoring, and standard Enhanced Autopilot with automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and lane-departure warning.
–
Cost Neutral?
–
While Musk didn’t provide pricing for the Semi, he claimed that operating costs will be comparable to those of current diesel trucks, thanks in part to cheaper maintenance and nonfluctuating energy costs that Musk said would be kept at $ 0.07 per kilowatt-hour. Citing the Semi’s ability to drive even with two of its four motors down, Musk stated, “We are guaranteeing that this truck will not break down for a million miles.”
–
–
–
–
–
You’re forgiven if you still haven’t yet gotten your head around the idea of electric semi-trucks. It took us a while, too. But after doing a bit of reporting on tougher emissions regulations soon to apply to big rigs, the notion is starting to make sense. And Tesla is not the only company thinking this way, with other EV semi-truck proposals appearing during the the past year or so, including Nikola Motor Company’s fuel-cell-powered semi prototype and a Class 7 Cummins electric semi prototype. This regulatory environment is subject to change, of course, given the current administration’s enthusiasm for rolling back environmental regulations. But don’t expect any change in the mandates to affect Tesla’s resolve. It plans to make its Semi a common sight at truck stops around the country starting in 2019—just not at the pumps.

The robots are coming for your jobs, experts say. But no matter if you’re a Luddite or an engineer at Microsoft, as the AI age threatens the livelihood of many, services like Indeed that help people find work may be the kind of AI everyone can agree on.
Indeed VP Raj Mukherjee said one big improvement fueled by AI has been analysis of job descriptions and applicant resumes with natural language processing (NLP) to better match candidates with the sorts of jobs they’re qualified to do.
“You’ll certainly start to figure out what are the core requirements of this job, so when I’m a job seeker, when I look at a job description it may say ‘Your resume is a match,’” he said.
This application of NLP has increased the amount of employers responding back to job applicants 10 percent across all industries and 15 percent in tech, Mukherjee said at VB Summit.
Other ways AI shapes job searches on Indeed include the personalized results a job seeker sees when they get an email or search the site, and regression techniques used to ferret out fraudulent job applications.
AI was also used to predict salary price ranges for job applicants, but this service was nixed after employers said the Indeed prediction was actually below what they were willing to pay.
“That’s an example of a misstep, and a great learning for us,” Mukherjee said. Indeed has stopped serving up salary predictions for some jobs today, but continues its work in this area using 450 million salary data points collected from former employees and job descriptions.
In the future, Indeed may use AI as a way to get more people to in-person job fairs, Mukherjee said, and invest more in exploration of sentiment analysis NLP to get an idea of how happy employees are as a Google engineer or Walmart cashier.
Data for sentiment analysis will come from 15 million reviews of companies by former employees.
Interviewed, a Y Combinator graduate acquired by Indeed in August, will also assist in future efforts by the company to use conversational AI to better match job applicants with hiring managers, in order to give managers more time to build relationships with qualified applicants and give applicants more relevant results.

Quick: synthetic or conventional, which is the better oil? Many gearheads will swear by synthetic oil, while more frugal car owners may opt for conventional due to its lower price and the fact it still meets minimum standards. Such opinions aren’t really backed by much independent scientific research, and that’s why AAA did a study of synthetic and conventional oils from five randomly selected brands to figure out if there are any differences.
The automotive organization ran through a variety of tests analyzing how temperature, mechanical shear, and other variables affected viscosity. It also tested the oils for volatility, which the organization explains could have implications for oil usage due to evaporation, and propensities for leaving deposits and oxidizing. When it came to maintaining viscosity in different temperatures and under stress from mechanical shear, synthetic oils, on average, performed significantly better than conventional oils. Synthetic oils were also less volatile, and they left fewer deposits. The one area where there wasn’t any significant difference was in how quickly the oils would oxidize.
These results make it clear that synthetic oils generally have an advantage when it comes to engine protection, so if you’re looking to give your car the longest life possible, it’s likely a worthwhile investment. AAA does say that the conventional oil still meets standards for engine oil, so is still fine to use in a car. Also, considering the remarkable array of oil brands and their different lines of oils, there is the possibility that a different set of oils would have resulted in a somewhat different results. However, as one of the few independent analyses of the differences between types of oils of which we know, AAA’s test should work as a general guide that’s more reliable than hearsay.
If you want to really go in-depth with the results of AAA’s study, you can check out the full analysis at the company’s website, here. Just click on the link to the report, and you’ll be able to peruse oodles of graphs and technical descriptions.

SpaceX has teased rocket aficionados with the prospect of a Falcon Heavy booster launch for the better part of this decade. First, it was going to fly in 2014, then 2015, and so on. Now SpaceX is targeting the second half of this year, and perhaps we finally have cause to believe the rocket company will deliver.
That’s because SpaceX has started to reveal bits of real hardware. First, the company shared an image last December of the Falcon Heavy’s interstage being prepped at the rocket factory in California. Now, SpaceX has taken a significant step forward by conducting the first static fire test of the rocket’s critical center core. This test was completed at its development facility in McGregor, Texas last week. Spoiler alert—the test was successful.

So what has taken so long? Earlier this year during a news conference, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk explained the delays by saying that developing the Falcon Heavy had proven more difficult than anticipated. “At first it sounded easy, but actually, no, this is crazy hard,” Musk said. The company has had to redesign the center core and additional hardware for the upcoming flight, which he deemed to be a fairly high-risk mission. To save funds, the company plans to use two “flight proven” Falcon 9 cores as the side boosters around the center core tested last week.

When I was a kid growing up in Toronto, I learned to love sports.
The teams were everything and they unfailingly wore blue.
The Maple Leafs, the CFL Argonauts, and just as I was completing high school, the Blue Jays, who had only then entered baseball’s major leagues.
But there was more to it than that. My father was teaching part-time at the University of Toronto and he would take me on week-end afternoons to the Varsity Blues football games and occasionally to Varsity Arena to see the hockey team play.
Both my mom and dad loved figure skating and when I was still a kid, we all became enthralled by the exploits of Toller Cranston, who was dramatically different than the rest of the skaters.
Cranston was always an incredible performer but often ran up against the judges who hadn’t caught up with his revolutionary approach to the sport. Although he won bronze medals at the world championships and the Olympics in the mid 1970’s, we were often left shaking our heads that he didn’t win more. We were convinced he was by far the best on the ice, and that the judges didn’t understand.
Cranston was born in Hamilton, and called Kirkland Lake, Ont., home but he skated out of Toronto. He was coached by Ellen Burka, a holocaust survivor who had been a Dutch champion and whose own daughter Petra had won the world figure skating championships in Colorado Springs in 1965 and an Olympic medal in 1964 in Innsbruck, Austria.
She too was from Toronto.
In our household we were also fans of the Olympics and we watched in 1968 as the Canadian show jumping team won gold in Mexico City. The riders were Jim Elder, Jim Day and Tommy Gayford. All of those guys were from the Toronto area and I had seen them compete at the Royal Winter Fair down at the Canadian National Exhibition Coliseum because my school went on field trips there.
We loved the Olympics in our home.
So it was the other night, as I hosted the Toronto Sport Hall of Honour induction ceremony at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre that I thought to myself, Toronto really is a good city of sport.
There was the mayor, John Tory, himself a former commissioner of the Canadian Football League, extolling the virtues of sport and what it means to the community. He pointed out that the teams here are enjoying great success these days. The Leafs are finally headed for the playoffs, the Raptors are on a roll, and the Blue Jays have captured all of our imaginations.
Then the mayor stayed the course and handed out the awards to all 15 inductees. You could tell he was pleased as punch just to be there. On this night, he was just a fan and proud to be the mayor of Toronto.
The roll call was spectacular.
There was Chris Rudge, a builder who headed up the Canadian Olympic Committee during the Vancouver Games; Nerissa Pooran, an incredibly talented Special Olympian who excels in many sports as well as Paralympic medalists; Victoria Nolan of rowing and basketball’s Adam Lancia. The national champion Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team was honoured as was their coach Kristine Drakich.
As it turns out I grew up just across the street from Kristine and her brother Eddie in a Toronto suburb.
There was Archie Allison who has done so much at Variety Village in order to give people with disability a chance to play sport. The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, (CIBC), was inducted because of their support for the landmark Pan Am and Parapan Am Games and partly responsible for the incredible sporting facility we were celebrating in.
Sport needs patrons.
Andre De Grasse, the great Olympic sprinter, was honoured and his biggest fan, his mother Beverley, was there to accept for him. The winner of back-to-back gold medals at the Olympics, gymnast Rosie Maclennan was inducted. She’s a graduate student at the University of Toronto.
The late Jerry Tonello was enshrined for his lifetime achievement of leading Canada to wheelchair basketball glory at the Paralympics. Much of the work he had done was here at the Canadian Institute of Sport, Ontario, where the national team is now based.
And then there were the legends.
Fanny “Bobbie” Rosenfeld who won Olympic medals on the track, wrote a feminist sports column for the Globe and Mail, and was selected as Canada’s female athlete of the first-half century, was at long last recognized.
Ellen Burka, the figure skating coach was celebrated. Her mark on the sport has been indelible. Burka worked with champions like Cranston, Elvis Stojko, and Patrick Chan. Her daughters Astra and Petra beamed as they represented their late mother.
Finally, Bobby Baun, the great Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman who played 17 seasons in the NHL and won four Stanley Cups with Toronto, came to the podium.
He walks haltingly now, but bow-legged as ever.
His illustrious career is still vivid in my memory.
Once a year I got to go to a Leafs game with my friend Ian Davey whose dad, Senator Keith Davey, greatly admired Bobby Baun.
Baun was nicknamed “Boomer” and while diminutive, was one of the hardest and cleanest body checkers in the game. He was also courageous and once, during a playoff game, scored an overtime winner on a fractured ankle to keep the Leafs’ Stanley Cup hopes alive.
Seeing Baun stride slowly to the stage and be honoured along with his stellar colleagues to a thunderous ovation was proof positive that the folklore of sport in Toronto is indeed rich.
“I’m just a little guy who walks with two canes but in my day I could hit you,” Baun winked. “All I can say is this: you can do whatever you dream of…play sports or go to school. You just have to believe in yourself.”
I loved being there on that night.
I grew up in Toronto as a fan of sport and I knew every one of the stories that was told at the ceremony.
They were the stuff of legend…like familiar fables.
It was an affirmation for me that Toronto, my hometown, really is a fantastic city of sport, and all kinds of it.
In my day they used to call our city, “Toronto the Good.”
On this occasion I was reminded that when it comes to sport, this city isn’t just good … it’s great.
