YouTube’s crackdown on conspiracy theories in the wake of the Parkland mass shooting has had some unintended casualties. The streaming video firm has confirmed to Bloomberg that its human moderators inadvertently removed videos and took down channels from right-wing and pro-gun outlets. Newcomers to YouTube’s moderation team can “misapply” its policies, a spokesperson said, which led to “mistaken removals” of content. The site vowed to reinstate material it had incorrectly pulled.
The company wasn’t specific about which channels fell afoul of the unintentional move, although the Outline (which broke the story) detailed a wide range of affected accounts. Some of them, such as Anti-School and Destroy the Illusion, explicitly peddle in conspiracy theories. Others, however, don’t appear to have obvious violations — the Military Arms Channel saw three gun videos taken down. Some of MAC’s videos had been restored as of the afternoon on February 28th, but none of the affected channels were back.
Some outspoken conservatives, including some of those affected by the crackdown, have accused Google of trying to censor right-wing politics through moves like this, including an earlier action against Infowars. They leveled similar accusations against Twitter when it removed thousands of their followers, although that was debunked when it turned out that the social network was purging bots.
The incident highlights the problem YouTube faces when policing it content. It knows that algorithms alone aren’t enough to detect offenders, but also has to contend with human nature — it can’t guarantee that people will flawlessly interpret the rules, especially if they’re inexperienced. That’s problematic by itself, but it’s worse when it happens in a politically charged atmosphere where people will accuse it of systemic bias.

The US Army’s official Twitter account “inadvertently” liked Mindy Kaling’s tweet on Saturday that seemed to be making fun of President Donald Trump’s rage-tweets earlier in the day, Lt. Col. Jason Brown, a US Army spokesperson, told Business Insider.
“An operator of the Army’s official Twitter account inadvertently ‘liked’ a tweet whose content would not be endorsed by the Department of the Army. As soon as it was brought to our attention, it was immediately corrected,” Brown wrote in an email to Business Insider.
Kaling had tweeted a picture of Kelly Kapoor, her character from “The Office,” with a quote on the bottom reading: “You guys, I’m like really smart now, you don’t even know.”

Trump sent out a series of tweets earlier on Saturday claiming he was “like, really smart” and “a very stable genius” in response to Michael Wolff’s new book, “Fire & Fury: Inside the Trump White House.” The book quotes multiple current and former cabinet members insulting his intelligence.
Wolff also said in an interview on the “Today” show Friday that 100% of the people around Trump, including top aides and family members, question his intelligence and fitness for office.
He has added, however, that he isn’t certain all of the book’s contents are true.
Kaling responded to the US Army liking her tweet by tweeting “#armystrong.” The US Army, however, had unliked her original tweet by early Sunday.

The US Army did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s follow-up email or phone call asking how the operator liked the tweet, given that the US Army Twitter handle doesn’t follow Kaling.

You might expect a pirate website to use something as shady as a secret cryptocurrency miner, but that’s now becoming a problem with above-board sites — and it’s not on purpose. Politifact visitors have discovered that the site was inadvertently hosting JavaScript code that hijacked your processor to mine virtual coins. The fact checker tells TechCrunch that it has removed the code and is investigating just how it got there, but it’s more than a little alarming that such a popular page (3.2 million views per month) could be susceptible to parasitic code that bogs down your PC.
While the culprits aren’t known at this point, they used familiar tactics. The JavaScript relied on CoinHive, a third-party service that makes these web-based currency miners possible.
It’s not hard for sites to fend off these hidden mining operations, and you can thwart them yourself by running script blockers like NoScript or, well, closing the browser tab. However, the Politifact incident suggests that these miners are becoming more of a widespread problem. Hackers have realized that they don’t necessarily need to compromise your PC or run a phishing scam to make a tidy profit — they just have to slip their code into a site and watch the digital money roll in. That’s better for your personal security, but it could also make web surfing a hassle as opportunists bog down your system for the sake of a little cash.

Enlarge / It’s now apparent there’s no technical reason why Fortnite players on Xbox One and PS4 can’t play together. (credit: Epic Games)
People playing Epic’s Fortnite on consoles recently were surprised to discover a new feature had been quietly added to the game: the ability to play with gamers on other consoles.
Over the weekend, a number of Reddit users posted evidence of players from other consoles showing up in their Fortnite games, including a father/son combo playing on two different consoles in the same room.
The cross-console connection became apparent because of a little-known naming convention between the two consoles: Microsoft’s Xbox Live allows players to use spaces in their online handle, while Sony’s PlayStation Network does not. Thus, when PS4 players noticed random opponents in their matches with handles that included spaces, they knew something odd was going on.

While live streaming is often associated with Facebook and Twitter these days, YouTube has been offering the feature for over five years now. Still, it’s only recently that the video giant has taken the phenomenon seriously — it’s finally letting some users broadcast from their phones, and it’s now easier to discover them via recommendations. Ironically, however, YouTube’s own recommendation system helped me discover a huge flaw in live streaming: flagrant copyright infringement. Indeed, it turns out that YouTube is infested with rogue streams of copyrighted content, and I wouldn’t have discovered it if YouTube itself didn’t recommend them to me.
During the recent July 4th weekend, I was on YouTube looking up videos on how to cook the perfect burger. As I perused through the search results, I came across something I hadn’t seen before; what appeared to be a 24/7 livestream of Bob’s Burgers, a popular animated show on Fox. I clicked on it and indeed, that was exactly what it was. The stream had only been running for four hours, but it already had thousands of viewers, and the live chatroom was full of people chatting about the episode. As the user hosting the stream did not appear to be in any way associated with the Fox Network, I had to assume it was not a legitimate feed.
But what was even more fascinating was the “Recommended for you” sidebar on the right of the video. It was a treasure trove of 24/7 livestreams of other popular animated shows like Futurama, The Simpsons, South Park and Family Guy. What’s more, there were multiple livestreams of each show going on simultaneously, and several of them were hosted by different users.

Intrigued, I did a few more searches and found that there were literally hundreds of these streams. At the time of my search, there were about 11 separate livestreams of Bob’s Burgers, around 70 livestreams of Futurama, 50 of South Park and 20 of The Simpsons.
A few of these streams had four to five thousand viewers, while most of them had only 20 or 30. A good chunk were only a few hours old, but I did come across one or two Futurama streams that began nearly five days ago. Upon further investigation, I found that sometimes one user would have five or six livestreams of the same show going simultaneously.
I felt like I had found a hidden gold mine of secret YouTube. This was all clearly very illegal and very against YouTube’s own copyright rules. Further searches online reveal that the phenomenon isn’t entirely new; it appears to have been around for at least a year (A quick Google search shows livestream feeds appearing as early as August 2016). Which makes the fact that YouTube hasn’t resolved this issue yet all the more intriguing.
I left my computer alone for a few hours as I went about my weekend and returned to see if the illegal streams that I bookmarked were still around. Interestingly, one of them had been taken down, but the rest were still up. The next day, more of them were removed, and the following day, all of them were gone. It seems like the copyright owners had finally sniffed them out.

But all it took to get the streams back was to head to my YouTube homepage, which was suddenly rife with recommendations for illegal livestreams of animated shows. Indeed, all I needed to do was search for “Futurama” and I would get a slew of those 24/7 streams again. Heck, if I felt particularly lazy, I could even just go to YouTube’s very own Live landing page to see several of them featured in the recommended section.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve noticed that as more streams get taken down, more just pop back up. Sometimes it’s the same user who does it, sometimes it’s different. Some of these users have hundreds of subscribers, and only have a few other uploaded videos. YouTube is clearly trying to take down these rogue streams as fast as it can, but it’s a constant cat-and-mouse game that YouTube doesn’t seem to be winning.
Of course, YouTube has long had a problem with rogue actors uploading copyrighted videos to its platform; it’s even been sued over it. Eventually, YouTube came up with a way of identifying copyrighted content with a system called Content ID. It’s essentially a digital fingerprinting system that automatically matches video and audio files in a database to videos that are uploaded on YouTube. If the video is in violation, it gets a Content ID claim, and it might eventually be taken down if the content owner chooses to do that.
The problem, however, is that Content ID only comes into play with uploaded videos, not the ones that are streamed live. In YouTube’s Support page, it states: “Content ID claims are only made after you complete your live broadcast, if you decide to archive the video.” As you can imagine, most of these illegal livestreams are not archived, so Content ID claims can’t be filed.

In a statement provided to AdAge, which reported a similar issue in April, YouTube states that it “respects the rights of copyright holders” and that it has “invested heavily in copyright and content management tools to give rights holders control of their content on YouTube.” It also said: “When copyright holders work with us to provide reference files for their content, we ensure all live broadcasts are scanned for third party content, and we either pause or terminate streams when we find matches to third party content.”
Engadget received the same statement from YouTube when we reported the issue. We were also told that when a copyright takedown notification has been received on a video or a livestream, that content is removed promptly and the accounts of repeat offenders are terminated.
YouTube isn’t the only one trying to figure out how to manage the wild wild west of live video. Facebook and Twitter have run up against this issue too, with people sneaking in live streams of concerts or sporting events. Periscope, for example, came under fire from HBO when users used it to stream the fifth season premier of Game of Thrones, as well as the Mayweather vs. Pacquaio boxing match. Of course, there are other issues with livestreams too. In the past year, people have used Facebook and Periscope to broadcast violent acts such as murders, suicides and rapes.

Both Facebook and Periscope have provided statements in the past that they respect the intellectual property rights and will take down videos if notified. Periscope told Engadget that all content must follow community guidelines, which include adherence of copyright and must not contain content that’s violent or pornographic. But it still seems like viewers have to proactively flag these videos to get moderators to notice; there’s nothing really preventing them to be streamed in the first place. Controlling live video, as it turns out, is pretty hard.
When asked about these live streams that appeared in my Recommendations feed, YouTube simply said it looks at all sorts of different criteria to fill it, such as geography, video popularity and my watch history. So, of course, if an infringing livestream is particularly popular and it also melds with my interests, there’s a higher likelihood it’ll surface. There doesn’t seem to be any plans to change how Recommendations work at this time.
YouTube isn’t doing itself any favors here. I wouldn’t have even found these streams if YouTube itself didn’t offer them up to me, thanks in part to its own algorithms. Sure, it can be hard to control what’s live, and you can’t always block people from streaming copyrighted content. But there has to be a way to prevent it from being so easy to find.

US senator Bernie Sanders has reacted with glee after hearing President Donald Trump praise Australia’s universal health care system.
Trump made the remark shortly after a Republican bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, was passed by the House of Representatives.
During a press conference with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Thursday, Trump criticised Obamacare while lauding his own healthcare plan.

“We have a failing healthcare…” Trump said to Turnbull, before adding, “I shouldn’t say this to our great gentleman, and my friend, from Australia because you have better healthcare than we do.”
Asked about the comments during an interview on US television, Sanders could not contain his laughter, saying: “Alright, the President has just said it. That’s great. Let’s take a look at the Australian healthcare system.
“Maybe he wants to take a look at the Canadian health care system or systems throughout Europe,” Sanders added. “Thank you Mr. President. Let us move to a Medicare-for-all system that does what every other major country on Earth does: guarantee healthcare to all people at a fraction of the cost per capita than we spend.”
Trump’s new healthcare plan still has to pass the Senate, and Sanders pledged to quote the president’s backing of the Australian system while debating the bill on the Senate floor.

Australia’s ‘Medicare’ system is a “universal access” public insurance program that grants citizens free access to doctors, optometrists, and public hospitals free of charge. The cost of prescriptions is also partially covered. Australians can also buy private health insurance, which covers private hospitals, specialists and other health services.
The system is mostly funded by the government through a 2 percent levy on taxpayers, however low income earners can have that burden reduced or even waived.
However, one common complaint about the Australian system concerns long waiting lists that can build up for certain medical procedures and appointments.
Trump’s press conference with Turnbull was also notable for an awkward moment when the US president failed to notice the Australian PM attempting to shake his hand.
The aborted handshake attempt is latest in a growing list of bungled Trump handshake encounters, with previous incidents involving German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Bolling held up a white board that showed various economic data points, from unemployment to consumer confidence to average home price.
Here’s the board, via a tweet from White House senior adviser Dan Scavino:

The board is actually a great endorsement of the Obama presidency. The former president took over in the depths of the worst recession since the Great Depression, as people worried the economic system as we knew it was collapsing. In eight years, Obama handed off an economy with a strong labor market, low unemployment, a huge housing recovery, vastly improved consumer confidence, and a tick up in average hourly earnings.
The board provides a good look at just how solid the recovery was under Obama.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The White House told a government watchdog agency that Kellyanne Conway, a senior aide to President Donald Trump, acted “inadvertently” when she publicly endorsed the clothing and jewelry line of Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, according to a letter the administration released on Wednesday.
Conway came under criticism last month when she said on television that Americans should “go buy Ivanka’s stuff,” in comments that appeared to violate government ethics rules prohibiting the use of public office to endorse products or advance personal business gains.
In a letter to a government ethics watchdog agency, White House Deputy Counsel Stefan Passantino said he met with Conway after her comments and that she committed to follow the rules in the future.
The Office of Government Ethics has said the White House should consider taking disciplinary action against Conway.
But there was no mention in Passantino’s letter of any disciplinary action.
“We concluded that Ms. Conway acted inadvertently and is highly unlikely to do so again,” Passantino said in the letter to Office of Government Ethics Director Walter Shaub.
“It is noted that Ms. Conway made the statement in question in a light, off-hand manner while attempting to stand up for a person she believed had been unfairly treated and did so without nefarious motive or intent to benefit personally,” the letter said.
Conway spoke about Ivanka Trump’s products after department store chain Nordstrom Inc said it was dropping the brand of the president’s older daughter.
A day before her appearance on television, Trump complained on Twitter that Nordstrom had treated his daughter unfairly by dropping her line.
Representative Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives’ oversight panel, criticized the White House response, saying other federal employees would likely be suspended if they made similar comments endorsing products or services.
Norman Eisen, a former ethics adviser to President Barack Obama, said each federal agency decides for itself how to handle such violations. He said he would have preferred a tougher response from Trump’s White House, but he said Passantino’s handling of the situation appeared reasonable.
