The Israel Defense Forces’ attempt to smear medic Razan al-Najjar, the 21-year-old killed last week, backfired when a video it shared on social media was swiftly debunked. The IDF shared an edited video of Najjar on both its English and Arabic spokesperson Twitter accounts on Thursday. “Hamas’ use of human shields must stop.” it wrote in English. “Razan al-Najjar is not the angel of mercy that Hamas propaganda attempts to portray,” the Arabic spokesman Avichay Edraee’s tweet reads. The Arabic version of the video begins with an image of Najjar with angel wings and a halo. The video, which has an ominous soundtrack, claims Najjar was “incited by Hamas,” and it shows footage of Najjar throwing a gas canister. pic.twitter.com/kJ89kf9PN2 — افيخاي ادرعي (@AvichayAdraee) June 7, 2018 You guys wouldn’t have to spend a bunch of money on propaganda if you just stopped killing medics and innocent people. Probably save a lot of time and hassle too. — Doubting Thompson (@DoubtngThompson) June 7, 2018 Another clip shows an interview with Najjar – which has been carefully edited to exclude half of her sentence. “I am Razan al-Najjar. I am here on the frontlines and I act as a human shield,” the English subtitles read. The video then cuts to text reading, “Hamas uses paramedics as human shields,” before encouraging people to share. READ MORE: 4 killed, hundreds injured in Naksa protests in Gaza Debunking However, the video turned out to be made from a heavily edited original. The first scene, which reportedly shows Najjar throwing the gas canister, clearly shows her throw it away from the people she is standing with, and nowhere near the fence. The canister falls in the grass mere meters away from the woman. She is wearing a surgical mask at the time, although it has not been confirmed that Najjar is even the woman in the video. Shameless Terrorist @AvichayAdraee👈😡posted a video of #RazanNajjar holding for a brief moment a little gas canister given to her & then threw it away one meter distance right in front of her feet! — Sonia Mota (@SoniaKatiMota) June 7, 2018 READ MORE: Debunked: Video of ‘fake dead Palestinians’ exposes pro-Israel propaganda The next clip featured in the video, the interview with Najjar, is also not as it seems. The IDF decided to cut mid-way through the interview with Al Mayadeen, so viewers have no idea what the second half of her sentence is. The full sentence was: “I am Razan al-Najjar. I am here on the frontlines and I act as a rescuing human shield to protect the and save the wounded at the frontlines.” Lol They cut off Razan's interview mid-sentence. I guess when the whole world lets you murder innocent civilians indiscriminately, your propaganda game doesn't really need to be 10/10. https://t.co/Njj8vPeWEy — Kamala Harris is a Cop (@BethLynch2020) June 7, 2018 "Human shields" is what the IDF calls the innocent people they murder. Pass it on. https://t.co/2rMJuSV4oh — BK Lounge (@BKLounge_Tweets) June 7, 2018 Najjar was shot in the chest while she was wearing her medical uniform last Friday. A preliminary probe by the Israeli army found soldiers did not mean to fire at Najjar, and that she was not a target. However, two weeks ago, the IDF shot 19 medical personnel in Gaza in a single day, including Moussa Abu Hassanein, who was fatally shot in the chest. Canadian doctor Tarek Loubani was among the medics who were shot that day, and he maintains they were targeted by Israeli forces. In her interview with Al Mayadeen, Najjar also said, “With all my strength and determination and whatever risks I will continue my career and I will save all the injured, so that they return and defend our land.” Her words suggest that she had no intention of dying as a human shield.” Israel often accuses Palestinians of partaking in ‘Pallywood,’ which they claim are fake videos and images designed to gain attention from Western media. However, Israel has been caught doing the same thing it accuses the Palestinians of, only in their case, it is an effort to minimize their crimes against Palestinians. Israel has also been found to use Palestinians as humanshields themselves. Israel initially claimed it didn't deliberately target the 21 year old Palestinian medic Razan Najjar. In a coordinated social media campaign, it is now trying to retroactively justify her murder. This is the behaviour of a sick, twisted and murderous regime. https://t.co/2XY4079IQh — Hassan (@haaxci) June 7, 2018 No one believes an oppressor propaganda. This👇#IDF baby killer/drama queen calls that a bomb⁉️🤬https://t.co/7rMoICAoDg

The ritual has arrived again. It’s time for me to make wildly inaccurate predictions about the future of games. This is always embarrassing for me, but I’m hoping that one of these years it will sharpen my thinking.
I’ve written more than 15,000 stories for VentureBeat over nearly 10 years, mostly based on what other people think about the future of tech and games. But once a year, I try to absorb some of that thinking and go out on the limb with my own predictions. This year, in the comfort of my home, I prefer the safe and the predictable. I can tolerate the process of thinking things through about once a year.
As the game industry crosses $ 116 billion in revenue, I figure somebody ought to be able to make a bundle by making good predictions. That’s not likely to be me, but I have fun pretending to be a seer anyway. First, I’ll give myself grades for last year’s predictions, and then I’ll make 10 new ones.
Above: It’s real.
Last year, I predicted that Red Dead Redemption 2 would be a smashing success. I figured that was a safe prediction, but I didn’t expect what has become inevitable with big games from Take-Two Interactive’s Rockstar Games label. They take their time. Rockstar announced it would push the game back to the spring of 2018. But that’s OK, as I can now make the same prediction for 2018.
Letter grade: F
I also said the Nintendo Switch would outsell the Wii U, but it would fall short of the Nintendo Wii’s 100 million in sales during the generation. This was an easy win, as the Switch has sold more than 10 million units and is already near outselling the lifetime sales of the Wii U at 13.6 million units. But it’s not yet clear that the Switch will have the legs to beat the Wii.
Letter grade: A (but still to be determined)
I figured virtual reality was also an easy prediction, as I said it would likely struggle to gain traction in 2017. Superdata Research estimates VR hardware and software sales will hit $ 3.7 billion, and it will eventually hit $ 28.3 billion in 2020. But the number of units going out the door has been disappointing, with Samsung’s Gear VR being the only platform to top 5 million units so far. VR has been lackluster with consumers, even with decent sales for the PlayStation VR. Microsoft moved into the market with Windows mixed reality headsets, but we don’t think that moved the needle much.
Letter grade: A
I predicted like many others that Apple would enter the augmented reality fray. I was right about that, but it only launched its software platform, ARKit, for developers to add AR to existing iPhones and iPads. Apple didn’t launch a hardware AR device, as expected.
Letter grade: B
Above: Game industry map
I said the U.S. would continue to lose jobs to overseas game companies. I don’t have hard data on this yet, but I believe it was correct. I’ve seen many expansions of game companies in Europe, Asia, and Canada, but I’ve written a lot about cutbacks at U.S. companies like Electronic Arts (Visceral Games shut), Gazillion, Torchlight, CCP (in Atlanta), and Gree (in San Francisco). Kabam sold itself and then dismantled many of its operations.
Letter grade: A (but hard to verify)
I said the game industry will have a chance to build an open platform for the Metaverse, but it will fail to do so. I feared like Tim Sweeney of Epic Games that the industry would squander its chance to build an open platform to host the Metaverse, the virtual world envisioned by Neal Stephenson in the novel Snow Crash in 1992. I was actually wrong about this, as companies such as Philip Rosedale’s High Fidelity are using blockchain to create interconnections for networks of virtual worlds. He’s just getting started, but that’s all we need so far.
Letter grade: F
I said that the number of Triple-A console games published in 2017 would slip. I don’t have the data on this one yet, but I feel like it’s true. Electronic Arts published eight games in 2016, and this year, it had about the same number. We’ll find out more when the stat collectors get to work.
Letter grade: Unclear
I predicted the next-generation of consoles would surface at E3 2017. I was right that Microsoft would unveil its machine, code-named Project Scorpio. The Xbox One X debuted in November, but Sony stayed mum about its plans.
Letter grade: B
Above: Shai Magzimof, CEO and cofounder of Phantom Auto, shows the company’s remote-driving station.
I predicted that we would see the walls come down between science fiction, real world tech, and video games. I was mainly thinking about how HBO planned to do a VR version of its Westworld TV show. But it turned out that HBO shelved that effort. This was the theme of our GamesBeat Summit 2017 event, and it is one we will continue at GamesBeat Summit 2018. One of the talks was about the coming together of self-driving cars and car simulations. We were right about that notion, as Phantom Auto recently debuted its self-driving car that can be remotely driven by a human with video game driving gear.
Letter grade: C
And I predicted Donald Trump would inspire game developers to be more creative. We saw plenty of so-so games inspired by various things Trump did this year, but I can’t say I’ve seen his influence, positive or negative, on the inspirations of the biggest game developers so far.
Letter grade: C
For the usual fun and embarrassment, here are my predictions for 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012.
1. Red Dead Redemption will be the Game of the Year.
Above: Red Dead Redemption 2
I hope Rockstar really does ship its Wild West fantasy in 2018, or I’ll get another F on my prediction. If they do ship, I think they’ll have a reasonable shot at having Game of the Year. Red Dead Redemption 2 has been rescheduled for the spring, and based on the trailer released so far, it looks like it will be another top-quality production from Rockstar. The game features an all-new cast and story about “outlaw Arthur Morgan and the Van Der Linde gang as they rob, fight and steal their way across the vast and rugged heart of America in order to survive.” Rockstar has won so many game awards that this is a pretty safe prediction, where the competition isn’t the threat. It’s Rockstar’s award to win or lose.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) doesn’t have a great track record with its own technology. DHS staff have been locked out of their own networks, first responder apps have been plagued by security issues and the federal employees were able to steal data from the agency. Now a new report calls DHS’s pilot facial recognition program into question, too, saying that it makes frequent errors and may even not be legal.
The report, authored by three lawyers at the Center on Privacy & Technology at Georgetown Law, says that the pilot is currently at nine US airports to scan the faces of travelers leaving the country. The face scans are then compared to DHS’s biometric database to their identity, ostensibly to prevent anyone from being impersonated. According to the report, the system could cost up to one billion dollars, though it also states that Congress nor DHS have not justified the need for such a program. In fact, the authors say that the DHS itself has questioned the value such a “biometric air exit” system would actually provide for the cost.
Further, the report notes that Congress has not clearly authorized the collection of biometrics from US citizens via facial recognition technology. “DHS should not be scanning the faces of Americans as they depart on international flights—but DHS is doing it anyway,” wrote the authors. “DHS also is failing to comply with a federal law requiring it to conduct a rulemaking process to implement the airport face scanning program—a process that DHS has not even started.”
As for accuracy, the report asserts that the system rejects as many as 1 in 25 travelers scanned, too, even when they have valid ID and travel documents. Ultimately, though, privacy concerns are massive here – what the report’s authors call “a serious escalation of biometric scanning of Americans” with “no codified rules that constrain it.” The report’s authors recommend that the DHS stop scanning travelers’ faces until it has gotten clear authorization from Congress, guarantee privacy of those it does scan, and prove that this technology works as advertised.

President Donald Trump on Saturday night railed against suspended ABC News reporter Brian Ross’ inaccurate report on former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and said more media outlets should discipline reporters over “their Fake News!”
“Congratulations to @ABC News for suspending Brian Ross for his horrendously inaccurate and dishonest report on the Russia, Russia, Russia Witch Hunt,” he said on Twitter. “More Networks and ‘papers’ should do the same with their Fake News!”
ABC News announced Saturday it suspended Ross for four weeks without pay, after he reported in a live segment on Friday that Flynn intended to testify that President Donald Trump had “directed him to make contact with the Russians” when Trump was still a presidential candidate.
ABC News later issued a “clarification” that said Trump had, in fact, issued the directive to Flynn after he was elected president.
The network, which reported its story based in part on information received from one unnamed Flynn associate, said in its correction that Ross’ source later clarified that, “during the campaign, Trump assigned Flynn and a small circle of other senior advisers to find ways to repair relations with Russia and other hot spots.”
“It was shortly after the election that President-elect Trump directed Flynn to contact Russian officials,” the network’s correction said.
Ross’ initial report caused US stocks to tumble after it aired and made waves on social media. On Saturday, ABC News apologized for the error and announced Ross’ suspension.
“We deeply regret and apologize for the serious error we made yesterday. The reporting conveyed by Brian Ross during the special report had not been fully vetted through our editorial standards process,” the network said in a statement.
“It is vital we get the story right and retain the trust we have built with our audience — these are our core principles. We fell far short of that yesterday.”
Flynn pleaded guilty to one felony count of lying to the FBI as part of a deal with special counsel Robert Mueller, who is conducting the investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion between members of Trump’s inner circle and Russian operatives. Flynn is expected to be a cooperating witness in Mueller’s case.

]]>A world map used by Khimji Vaghjiani, an associate professor at the University of Sydney reading the course called “Professional Practice of IT,” showed a disputed strip of land as part of India, according to The Australian.
Though the disputed area was not easy to spot on the map, the perceived inaccuracy apparently touched Chinese students on the raw.
Australian Red Scarf, a Wechat account run by Sydney University’s Chinese students group, posted an article last Wednesday demanding that the map be removed, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.
“This map is different from [the] Chinese map … India should respect the facts,” it said. “Is this Indian teacher trying to provoke a conflict?” the piece asked.
Bashed by some Chinese social media users, Vaghjiani brought formal apologies and said the map he downloaded from the Internet was “a genuine mistake.”
“Over 18 months ago, I used an out-of-date map, downloaded from the internet, when discussing characteristics of IT entrepreneurs around the world, however I was unaware that the map was inaccurate and out-of-date,” he explained in a statement to The Australian.
The teacher then said he regretted “any offence this may have caused.” The map was not included in the course materials, Vaghjiani added.
“The course introduces students to concepts, standards and techniques associated with professional practice in information technology in business environments. The current learning materials for this course (Semester 2, 2017) are up-to-date and do not contain this map.”

Australia’s Chinese community has recently added more fuel into the China-India rift. In mid-August, a cavalcade of 10 luxury cars paraded across Sydney, driving past three major universities before arriving at India’s Consulate General in Sydney.
The cars were decorated with the Chinese flag and stickers featuring slogans that read: “Borderline is our baseline;” “China: Not even a bit can be left behind;” and, “Anyone who offends China will be killed, no matter how far the target is,” according to SBS.
The story comes at a time when two Asian powers are challenging each other in a bitter political dispute over Doklam plateau (Dongland in Chinese), a tiny swatch of land sandwiched between India, China and Bhutan.
Tensions between Beijing and New Delhi escalated in June this year when the Chinese started building a road on the plateau. Bhutan requested help from India, which amassed troops on the border, according to Beijing’s claims. In turn, China conducted a number of military drills in Tibet, not far from the contested area.
Despite the recent flare-up in tension, both countries’ actions have so far been limited to a heated war of words. In late July, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Senior Colonel Wu Qian urged Indians not to “push your luck and cling to any fantasies.” He added in a statement “it is easier to shake a mountain than to shake the [People’s Liberation Army].”
In August, Indian and Chinese defense experts passionately engaged each other in a heated TV debate. Speaking on a news show run by China Global Television Network (CGTN), Ashok Mehta, a retired army general, accused Chinese media of fanning an anti-Indian hysteria and “taking India to war.”
His counterpart, director of the Chinese Defense Ministry’s Center for International Security Cooperation Senior Colonel Zhou Bo, then fired off a blunt threat, saying India should leave Doklam or face a conflict. “Let me just use a few seconds – you [Indian troops] are on Chinese territory, so if you do not want a war, you’ve got to go away from Chinese territory,” the senior colonel said.
While India maintains Doklam belongs to the kingdom of Bhutan, China argues it was under Beijing’s jurisdiction for several centuries.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Times says Fox News’ morning show “Fox & Friends” should apologize for what the newspaper calls a “malicious and inaccurate segment” about the newspaper, intelligence leaks and the Islamic State that aired Saturday.
New York Times spokeswoman Danielle Rhoades Ha said Sunday that she requested an “on-air apology and tweet.”
The paper, she wrote, took issue with a Fox host on the segment saying that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi “was able to sneak away under the cover of darkness after a New York Times story” in 2015 and a host’s comment that the U.S. government “would have had al-Baghdadi based on the intelligence that we had except someone leaked information to the failing New York Times.”
The segment referred to comments by a top military official noted in a Friday Fox story . In the Fox story, Gen. Tony Thomas, the head of U.S. Special Operations Command, said his team was “close” to al-Baghdadi after a 2015 raid but the “lead went dead” after it “was leaked in a prominent national newspaper.” The Fox story connected Thomas with the Times, saying that Thomas “appeared to be referring to a New York Times report in June 2015 that detailed how American intelligence agencies had ‘extracted valuable information.'”
The FoxNews.com story was updated online Sunday with a Times statement. “Fox & Friends” will “provide an updated story to viewers tomorrow morning based on the FoxNews.com report,” the company said in a statement emailed by Fox spokeswoman Caley Cronin Sunday.
The Times wrote a story Sunday saying President Donald Trump was wrong when he tweeted Saturday morning thatthe “failing” New York Times “foiled” a government attempt to kill al-Baghdadi, apparently a reaction to Fox’s story. The Times also pushed back against Fox’s story, noting that the Pentagon “raised no objections” with the paper before the 2015 article on the intelligence gleaned from the raid was published.

Millions of people stand to benefit from closely monitoring their blood pressure—those suffering with heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and pregnancy-induced hypertension, for instance, plus those who just stress in doctors’ offices and can’t get accurate readings. Yet the gadgets available for home use may not be up to the task.
In a study out this week, about 70 percent of home blood-pressure devices tested were off by 5 mmHg or more. That’s enough to throw off clinical decisions, such as stopping or starting medication. Nearly 30 percent were off by 10 mmHg or more, including many devices that had been validated by regulatory agencies. The findings, published in the American Journal of Hypertension, suggests that consumers should be cautious about picking out and using such devices—and device manufacturers need to step up their game.
“We were a little surprised to see 70 percent,” lead author Raj Padwal told Ars. Dr. Padwal is a professor of medicine at the University of Alberta. He and his colleagues went into the study expecting to find problems with some devices, he admitted. “We thought maybe it would be 40 maybe—maybe 50—but 70 was a lot. That was disappointing.”
