And another 10 contenders for the Democratic party’s presidential nomination faced off at Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts on Thursday night.

For two hours, the candidates — Michael Bennet, Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, John Hickenlooper, Bernie Sanders, Eric Swalwell, Marianne Williamson and Andrew Yang — fielded questions from NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, Lester Holt and Chuck Todd, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and Telemundo’s José Diaz-Balart. (From the Night 1 crop, Elizabeth Warren, Julian Castro and Cory Booker emerged as the “winners“, per a TVLine poll.)

Before you head to our “voting booth,” a few memorable moments from Night 2:

* Signaling that Trump would be discussed and without any mincing of words, Sanders roared (as he pretty much did everything). “Trump is a phony, he is a pathological liar, he is a racist, and he lied to the American people during his campaign…. That’s how we beat Trump — expose him for the fraud he is.”

* When asked how Democrats pitching big plans would pay for them, Harris marveled, “Where was that question when the Republicans and Donald Trump passed a tax bill that benefits the top 1%.. .and contributed at least $ 1 trillion to the debt of America?”

* After Swalwell shaded Biden by citing his decades-old call to “pass the torch” to a new generation, the moment segued into a full-stage squabble. Harris shut the murmuring down by saying, ”America does not want to witness a food fight, they want to know how we’ll put food on their table.”

* In perhaps the most resonant “show of hands” display across the two-night debate series, all 10 candidates signaled that they would provide healthcare coverage for undocumented immigrants (triggering Trump’s first debate tweet of the night).

* Yang showed up sans necktie!

* Buttigieg on how Republicans far more than Democrats like to (think they) bring religion into things: “We should call out hypocrisy when we see it. God wouldn’t condone putting children in cages” and anyone who supports that practice “has lost all claim to ever use religious language again.”

* “As the only black person on the stage, I would like to speak on the subject of race,” Harris said, claiming her time and launching into the night’s most charged moment. Her comments eventually targeted Biden, to whom she said, “I do not believe you are a racist,” and yet he opposed busing when she was age 9. Following Biden’s middling response, she declared, “On this subject [of race] it cannot be an intellectual debate among Democrats. We have to take it seriously, and we have to act swiftly.

* With her closing statement, author Williamson warned that she is going to beat Donald Trump with “love.”

Now we want to know what you think. Choose the Night 2 candidates that impressed you the most — followed by the best challengers to Trump — and then hit the comments to discuss your choices!

Democratic Presidential Debate No. 1: Who Impressed You the Most? https://briefnews.eu/democratic-presidential-debate-no-1-who-impressed-you-the-most/ https://briefnews.eu/democratic-presidential-debate-no-1-who-impressed-you-the-most/#respond Thu, 27 Jun 2019 06:05:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/democratic-presidential-debate-no-1-who-impressed-you-the-most/

American voters got their first official introduction to the Democratic Party’s 2020 presidential hopefuls — well, at least some of ’em — in a densely populated debate Wednesday evening.

The inaugural Democratic presidential forum of the 2020 election cycle found 10 contenders for the party’s nomination facing off at Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. For two hours, the candidates — Cory Booker, Julián Castro, Bill de Blasio, John Delaney, Tulsi Gabbard, Jay Inslee, Amy Klobuchar, Beto O’Rourke, Tim Ryan and Elizabeth Warren — fielded questions from NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, Lester Holt and Chuck Todd, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and Telemundo’s José Diaz-Balart.

(The second debate, scheduled for Thursday night, will feature Michael Bennet, Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, John Hickenlooper, Bernie Sanders, Eric Swalwell, Marianne Williamson and Andrew Yang.)

In a moment, we’ll want to know which of Night 1’s White House hopefuls most impressed you. But first, a few memorable bits from the two-hour event:

* O’Rourke delivered his opening statement, which was about how the economy should work for everyone, in English and Spanish. Many of his fellow candidates followed suit by working Spanish into their answers.

*”That’s what we call at home ‘All foam and no beer.’” — Klobuchar on President Donald Trump’s campaign promises to drop pharmaceutical prices

* When Inslee stated that he’d done more than anyone else in the debate to protect women’s reproductive rights, Klobuchar shot back, “I just want to say that there’s three women up here” — indicating herself, Gabbard and Warren — that have fought pretty hard for women’s right to choose.”

* Immigration, gun control and how to handle Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in the event of a Democratic president/Republican Congress situation were three of the most contentious topics discussed. Warren, in particular, said she wanted to deal with gun violence as a national health crisis.

* The second hour got off to a rough start when Todd’s question about guns got sidelined by audio problems that caused the moderator to toss to an unscheduled break. (Everything was solved by the time the debate returned.)

* While discussing civil rights, Booker spoke up for trans awareness. “We do not talk enough about trans Americans, especially African American trans Americans and the incredibly high rates of murder right now,” he said.

* During a round-up question about what the candidates considered the greatest threat to America right now, Inslee replied, “Donald Trump.” (Russia, China, Iran and climate change were other popular answers.)

* Ryan didn’t say or do much during the debate. On a related note: Per The New York Times, Booker, O’Rourke and Warren had the most speaking time over the course of the evening.

Now we want to know what you think. Choose the three candidates that impressed you the most, then hit the comments to discuss your choices!

Piers Morgan reveals ‘highly intelligent’ Tory leader candidate who has impressed him https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-reveals-highly-intelligent-tory-leader-candidate-who-has-impressed-him/ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-reveals-highly-intelligent-tory-leader-candidate-who-has-impressed-him/#respond Tue, 11 Jun 2019 21:02:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-reveals-highly-intelligent-tory-leader-candidate-who-has-impressed-him/

Piers Morgan claimed Michael Gove impressed him the most as Conservative leadership candidates officially put themselves forward for the job of leader and Prime Minister on Monday. Five leadership contestants delivered speeches as they outlined what they would do if they were elected as leader of the Conservative Party. Speaking on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, host Piers Morgan explained which contestant impressed him the most, branding them “highly intelligent”.

He said: “Yesterday, there were five launches, of other contenders yesterday. Some better than others, some very theatrical, Matt Hancock.

“But, I actually thought Michael Gove, notwithstanding the barrage about drugs, I thought he had the most professional launch.

“I thought he sounded intelligent, he played up his experience, in several big departments.

“And opinion divided, but one thing people say about Gove and it has certainly been my experience, he is highly intelligent, certainly got the experience over most of the other contenders I would say.

“He probably has a slight issue in terms of relatability to the public.

“But, in terms of his general capability for the job of Prime Minister, because we need somebody good in this job”.

Later, the Good Morning Britain host added that Mr Gove’s ability to bounce back from criticism over taking cocaine 20-years ago, and handle the pressure, shows “leadership skills”.

He said: “What I thought was impressive about Michael Gove was the way he took it all on yesterday and it didn’t look like it phased him or knocked him off course. That in itself shows me leadership skills.”

Five Tory leadership contestants launched their campaigns on Monday as they put themselves forward to take over from Mrs May.

Environment Secretary Mr Gove, Health Secretary Matt Hancock, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab and former work and pensions secretary Esther McVey all delivered speeches on how to take the country forward.

Mr Gove has faced criticism during his bid for the top job after he admitted to the use of class A drug, cocaine, 20-years ago.

During his speech on Monday, Mr Gove took a swipe at fellow candidates saying the new leader needs to be someone who has been “tested in the heat of battle” and not one who has been “hiding in their bunker”.

Regarding Brexit, Mr Gove said it was “not enough to believe in Brexit you’ve also got to be able to deliver it”, insisting he has “a proper plan”.

This week candidates the 10 candidates will take part in Conservative Party hustings, before the first ballot on June 13.

Candidates will need to win five percent of the vote (a total of 17 MPs) to move on to the next round – if they don’t, they’ll be eliminated from the race.

A second ballot for leader will then take place between June 18 and June 20, where MPs will need to secure 10 percent of the vote (a total of 33 MPs) to stay in the race.

The final pair of candidates will begin hustings events in front of paid-up Conservative Party members, before the final vote from members on July 22.

Star Wars 9 leak: Kylo Ren and a NEW superweapon? Fans are NOT impressed https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leak-kylo-ren-and-a-new-superweapon-fans-are-not-impressed/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leak-kylo-ren-and-a-new-superweapon-fans-are-not-impressed/#respond Sat, 27 Oct 2018 22:29:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leak-kylo-ren-and-a-new-superweapon-fans-are-not-impressed/

We had a Death Star. Then another Death Star. Then a Death Star by another name, Star Killer Base.

Is the franchise really going to bring it all to a grand finale with yet another planet-destroying weapon?

As more leaks and reports continue to emerge from the Episoed 9 production, there has been a new description of concept art for a devastatingly powerful weapon.

Not only will this potentially frustrate many fans, the use of it would surely put Kylo Ren well beyond hope of any possible redemption…

Of course, take any such reports with a large pinch of salt, but the description sounds ominous.

The leak said: “Specifically, a description of Kylo Ren inside his throne room, assumed to be the headquarters of the First Order, viewing a holgram form a device held in his hand.

“Kylo appears to be examining three large superweapons that are in a cyllindrical shape with an enormous engine on each side of each superweapon of this ship/weapon, destroying terrain on a planet. The engine burner is coloured red and the blast from the bottom of these three massive weapons is coloued blue, impacting a surface causing astronomical destruction. Parts of the weapon seem to be under consruction and not finished.”

One commentator immediately suggested these could be the World Devastators fom the Star Wars Legends comics Dark Empire storyline.

These superweapons used tractor beam technology and could sweep across worlds and destroy entire cities with ease. Of course, nothing from Legends is currently Canon, but new and old elements are always being brought in.

Perhaps Kylo is building new terrifying weapons or he is searching through old records and holograms for information and old weapon technology? Is he is watching a live report of new military operation or a old hologram from the Empire.

It is now known that the huge weapon that was used to destroy the doors of the rebel base on Crait was actually using Death Star technology. Have Kylo and the First Order been salvaging old Imperial tech and updating and making it even more powerful?

More importantly, do fans really want another superweapon. The Death Star storyline of Episode 4 was so closely followed with Starkiller Base in Episode 7, and many fans have made it clear they do not simply want a rehash of Episode 6 al over again in the final film.

Responses to this latest leak were almost unanimous and included:

“Here we go, Death Star 4.

“Please not another Death Star, it’s getting old.”

“Empire Strikes Back didn’t have a super weapon and regarded as the saga’s best film. World Devastators sound interesting from Dark Empire.”

“I’m just a little fed up with super weapons to tell you the truth. I would much rather have a standard military engagement. But that’s real warfare. Armies usually come up with big and powerful weapons.”

Star Wars 9 leaks Luke scene with TWO characters? Fans NOT impressed 'We don't want this' https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leaks-luke-scene-with-two-characters-fans-not-impressed-we-dont-want-this/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leaks-luke-scene-with-two-characters-fans-not-impressed-we-dont-want-this/#respond Fri, 28 Sep 2018 18:34:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leaks-luke-scene-with-two-characters-fans-not-impressed-we-dont-want-this/

More and more news is emerging from the Star Wars sets.

Episode 9 has been filming for a month already and there have been leaked photographs as well as descriptions of concept art, scenes and sets.

Numerous reports place Mark Hamill filming at least two scenes at Pinewood in October with two of the new leads from the final trilogy. Everyone is eager to find out how Luke Sywalker will return. Will he be shown as a Force Ghost, in flashbacks or somehow brought back to life using the Force?

New leaks describe an exciting and dramatic Luke scene in great detail and the fan reactions have not been positive.

Two things must be remembered. First, leaks, even if confirmed, may not materialise on screen when the final cut hits cinemas. Second, a very vocal section of the fandom was outraged by much of Episode 8 and has very specific demands for Episode 9. They do not represent the entire fandom, but they are clearly a significant part.

The leaks says: “Both Kylo Ren and Rey are in a jungle at night. Lots of moonlight shining on the two characters.

“Suddenly the Force Ghost of Luke appears in the distance. As Luke is walking closer to Kylo and Rey he appears young like the Luke we saw in Return of the Jedi. Then an older man without a beard, eventually morphing into the Luke Skywalker we saw on the planet Crait with the beard.

“At this point Luke’s ghost is on top of a boulder and appears to be giving Kylo Ren and Rey a lecture.”

This certainly ties in with newly clean-shaven pictures Mark Hamill posted just before he started filming.

It is also a totally new way of presenting a Force Ghost. Previously Star wars has only shown one incarnation of Anakin, Yoda or Obi-Wan. This was highlighted by the removal of the first Anakin Sebastian Shaw force ghost being replaced by Hayden Christensen in later reissues of The Return of the Jedi.

JJ Abrams could be entering a new version of a Force ghost into official canon who is able to manipulate how he appears to the living. Although it seem rather extreme for Hamill to shave his beard for a few flickering seconds of this scene.

The scene also reveals that Kylo and Rey will be reunited in Episode 9 and go on some form of journey together.

Despite all these major revealtions, the fan reactions to the spoiler video have overwhelmingly focussed on one thing. A section of the fandom wants Luke brought back alive at any cost. Any other alternative, they say, will only prolong their boycott of the latest Star Wars movies.

Comments included: “It will be really tough if not impossible for JJ, Lucas Films, etc., to pull off a successful film that redeems past mistakes without bringing Luke back in the flesh.”

“Luke back, in the flesh, alive, or we’re done.”

“As I write this there are 187 comments. About 90% give or take say the same thing. No Luke. No movie. Ive seen the same on other channels. I get it. Some people liked last Jedi. That’s fine. Most did not. The second part of a concluding trilogy is not the place to make an indie film where you deconstruct the one character that got us here. Most can agree his character was poorly treated in episode 8.”

“Happy reading the comments that everyone is in agreement. No GHOSTS please. A living Luke only.”

“No live luke, no ticket. Simple as that.”

“No force ghost Luke please. He needs to be alive. Keep repeating this but if Disney checks this stuff they need to know and see it over and over.”

“This trilogy doesn’t have to be about him but don’t treat the character like garbage.”

Star Wars 9 leak and pics reveal opening scenes? Fans are NOT impressed – More backlash? https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leak-and-pics-reveal-opening-scenes-fans-are-not-impressed-more-backlash/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leak-and-pics-reveal-opening-scenes-fans-are-not-impressed-more-backlash/#respond Sat, 25 Aug 2018 03:08:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leak-and-pics-reveal-opening-scenes-fans-are-not-impressed-more-backlash/

What will it take to please Star Wars fans?

Many are distinctly unhappy after Rian Johnsons’s The Last Jedi delivered a divisive movie that many felt betrayed the iconic classic characters and themes of the franchise.

There is huge pressure on JJ Abrams to bring the saga to a close and repair the split in the fandom while threats to boycott Episode 9 continue to rumble from the most aggrieved fans.

It has been reported that the director is committed to bringing back as many original and prequel trilogy characters and motifs as possible but the first response to new photos and leaked storylines from the UK sets is still decidedly mixed.

The new pictures show actors Oscar Isaacs and John Boyega, along with Chewbacca actor Joonas Suotamo and new Episode 9 star Naomi Ackie filming scenes on a windswept, desolate landscape.

Redditor 4LOM has leaked Last Jedi storylines in the past, with some major points turning out to be correct.

His latest post says: “What we’re seeing is actually a reunion between Chewbacca and Poe & Finn; after the events of The Last Jedi the last of the Resistance spread itself across the galaxy in ones and twos to different systems, growing grassroots rebellions from the ground up. Poe and Finn, sent by General Leia, are going from planet to planet retrieving these fledgling groups.”

“The small force we see in photos, shrouded in camo, is part of a paramilitary group led by Naomi Ackie’s character, who has been working with Chewbacca for months to build a homegrown resistance force. She has been described to me as smart and capable, and has immediate chemistry with Mr. Dameron. She leads them back to their base of operations, where I’ve been told we get some exposition that elaborates on the total control the First Order has.”

Responding to the leak, a consensus among many commentators is that it would have been more credible if it came out before the pictures were released. Now everyone has seen Finn, Poe and Chewbacca on a new planet with Naomi Ackie’s character, it is too easy to claim this confirms insider information.

It also chimes with generally accepted views that Episode 9 will have to rebuild the rebel forces back up all over again, after they were decinated in The Last Jedi. Many fans appear to view the prospect with weariness.

A trending opinion is that the idea of a large opening portion of the movie given over to slowly rebuilding the resistance is neither exciting nor necessary and could have been handled in a few comments or brief scenes. Instead the set-up shown in the new photos seems rather major, if that is what is going on.

Comments include; “If this is true these scenes feel somewhat…irrelevant? A waste of screentime, since this could have happened in a short scene, but someone said that the Finn/Poe scene will be long. It makes me felt as if JJ has nothing juicy for these three and is stretching their scenes.”

“This doesn’t sound very good at all. While I know TLJ was a let down to the Star Wars saga, I am keeping my hopes up that there is some redemption is this final chapter.”

“I’m not sure I get the point of even seeing it in the movie. It could have just happened/be almost complete as a plan by the time we get here. It’s inefficient storytelling.”

As is increasingly the case with th efandom, there are also completely opposing views as well  as the observation that this simply expands on groundworlk laid in the bridging comics.

“Nice. I hope this is true. Grassroots rebellion is exactly the angle Lucasfilm has been exploring with Rebels and Enfys Nest, so it’d be great to see the ST embrace it.”

“Plus the grassroots stuff adds up with what’s been established in the current arc of the Poe Dameron comic. The rest of Black Squadron has been going to planets hoping to gain help from different systems.”

Whether the leaks are proved correct or not, one thing is clear: it seems an almost impossible task now for anyone to unite the Star Wars fandom in any kind of harmonious accord.

Star Wars 9 'title' reveals huge SNOKE clue? Fans are NOT impressed https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-title-reveals-huge-snoke-clue-fans-are-not-impressed/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-title-reveals-huge-snoke-clue-fans-are-not-impressed/#respond Fri, 01 Jun 2018 23:58:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-title-reveals-huge-snoke-clue-fans-are-not-impressed/

The backlash is strong in these ones.

Even as the Episode 9 working title is revealed, some fans have suggested rather brutal (if amusing) versions which make no pretense of hiding how angry they still are with The Last Jedi.

Filming on the final trilogy movie will begin in July and the new working title “is said to have some significance.”

What does it mean? Does it really reveal that Snoke is somehow coming back from the dead?

Star Wars news site Fantha Tracks has revealed every working title in the modern era.

It said: “Fantha Tracks can now exclusively reveal that the working title for Episode IX has been changed to ‘trIXie.’

“Research by Fantha Tracks has uncovered documentary proof of the name change, the same research methods and public sources were used by the same team to uncover the production names of every Disney era Star Wars film to date.”

The Roman numerical number 9 is a clever touch but some fans  are convinced that the name points towards Andy Serkis and thus Snoke. One said: “Tricksy was a phrase used by Gollum in LOTR….Snoke is back?”

Much as Snoke was rather disappointingly dispatched, this theory seems rather a stretch.

Fantha Tracks points out how all previous working titles have playful links to the productions and directors, like the Solo movie’s working title of Red Cup which refrerred to popular party cups of the same name.

The real film title will most likely be unveiled later this year, probaly when the first teaser trailer is expected to drop in November.

Fans wasted no time suggesting their own harsh titles for Episode 9:

EPISODE 9 FAN SUGGESTIONS:

“Should be…Star Wars IX – The Last Hope.”

“The title is Ep 9 The Last Star Wars..”

“Episode IX The Final Nail.”

“Star Wars Episode IX: Damage Control.”

“Episode 9 revenge of the fans.”

“Episode Nein’ is actually the working title.”

“Episode 9: No One Cares Anymore.”

‘Beirut’ Screenwriter Tony Gilroy Isn’t Impressed by Good Lines [Interview] https://briefnews.eu/beirut-screenwriter-tony-gilroy-isnt-impressed-by-good-lines-interview/ https://briefnews.eu/beirut-screenwriter-tony-gilroy-isnt-impressed-by-good-lines-interview/#respond Sat, 14 Apr 2018 06:39:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/beirut-screenwriter-tony-gilroy-isnt-impressed-by-good-lines-interview/ Tony Gilroy interview

27 years after Tony Gilroy wrote Beirut, it’s finally reaching theaters. Long before his time on the Bourne franchise, directing Michael Clayton and Duplicity, and his work on Rogue One: A Story Wars Story, Gilroy penned a story about Mason Skiles (Jon Hamm), a troubled, grieving, and alcoholic negotiator who returns to Beruit 10 years after a personal tragedy to negotiate the freedom of a CIA agent and former friend.

When Gilroy first wrote the script for Interscope, the thriller garnered the attention of movie stars and drew some controversy, but ultimately, the expensive project went unmade. Four or five years ago, there was new interest in Beirut, so Gilroy spent a week or two revising the script before the director behind Session 9 and Transiberian, Brad Anderson, went to shoot the movie in Morocco.

Gilroy also had the chance to look back on some old writing of his, to see how his writing had changed. It was an experience the writer and director recently told us about in a wide-ranging interview about mistakes young writers make, great dialogue, writing “the best of the best” type of characters, why he doesn’t want to write true stories, and more.

Below, read our Tony Gilroy interview.

Beirut is another one of your stories where a part of the thrill comes from watching a character who’s good at their job. For you, where does that joy come from, watching someone who is really effective at what they do?

I don’t know what the origin of that pleasure is. I don’t know what the attraction is. It might be generational [Laughs]. One of my father’s great credits was The Fastest Gun Alive, but it’s like, “Well, who is he?” “Well, he’s the fastest gun alive.” There’s something about great competence that’s interesting. You probably know I wrote this movie a long, long time ago, and this was really how I learned how to be … I’ve done a lot of journalistic kind of movies where there’s a lot of research, and this was the one that really taught me how to do that in a fundamental way.

If you’re talking about somebody who’s the best bricklayer who ever lived, or the best figure skater who ever lived, or whatever, you get to learn a tremendous amount. That’s part of the job that I really like, but I don’t know. Also, you have to show them doing the thing. I could introduce you in a movie and say, “Oh, my god. This is the greatest getaway driver in the western hemisphere,” and if you say it loud enough and clear enough, all of a sudden, you’re the greatest getaway driver in the western hemisphere, before I even see you in a car. It just works.

Then there’s the challenge of showing they’re the greatest getaway driver in the world.

You have to prove it. You’ve got to show your work, eventually.

I feel like you we a lot of movies or shows where everyone says so-and-so is such a great writer, but they rarely show you why.

That never works. That never, ever works. I don’t like movies about writers. Gambling is really hard. They did beat it in Rounders. The trick they found in Rounders really won the day, but my father used to write a lot of gambling scripts. My father was a huge gambler, but he really thought that very few people ever captured it. It’s really tedious in a way. Yeah, it’s like, “Who’s a great writer? Okay, okay. Exciting. Yeah. Write your way over the wall…”

[Laughs] I know you wrote the script for Beirut about 25 years ago, so when the project was revived, what was your initial reaction to reading a 25-year-old script of yours?

I was impressed with the research when I went back and checked all the research and had the benefit the internet at that time. Also, there had been a lot of other journalism and books that had been written about the period of time that had closed down the verdict on a lot of things that were kind open-ended back in 1991. So, I was happy with the scholarship, and I was happy with the plotting and the ambition of it, but it was a little bit easy. There was too much of me in it. When you’re a young writer, a lot of times you can really feel the writer in it, like you’re going for a line, or you’ve got a hook on a scene, and you’re kind of warping a scene so that you look cool.

I’ve had all of that effectively beaten out of me over the years. You just humble yourself time after time, where you have scenes shot that you’re just groaning. “Why did I write that, and why doesn’t he shut up?” You get quieter. You get humbler. You get much more trusting the actors and the stillness. You get much more honest. So, I really didn’t change very much, and I was really pleased to be collaborating with this very young, energetic, writer who had done all the research for me. I was really pleased to go in and put a quieter, I think a much more real and, not actor-proof, but actor-friendly and director-friendly, pass on it.

What else does making a script more actor-friendly and director-friendly involve?

Making it honest, instead of tilting a scene so that you have something that’s jazzy happen, or tilting a scene around a line. “Gotta have a great line, and I want to have this great line at the end of the scene.” I mean, most of everything that we do is scene work. You write 70,000,000 scenes in your life, and the idea of buttoning up scenes and rounding them out is something that you get rewarded for when you’re young. Certainly, as I was coming up in the ’80s and ’90s, and desperate to be a screenwriter, that was really the style of the time: round everything out, button the scenes. It’s not what life is like, and it’s not good drama, and it puts a strain on everybody, and you’d go into rehearsals with actors, and you’d watch actors…

Before I was directing, you’d watch actors try to strain to get to certain moments, and you’re frustrated, and they’re frustrated and, finally, you start to realize, “My God. Their navigation systems are usually pretty accurate.” You quiet things down and let truth play, and rely on the camera more. Just try to be honest and always ask really difficult questions in the scenes if there’s something that’s bothering you, doesn’t seem quite right. Well, you better answer that question, because it’ll always be wrong.

You mentioned wanting to tilt a scene around a line early on in your career. Do you ever have lines in mind before writing a scene, or do the most memorable lines usually come more naturally?

I’ve never had a line before a scene, but I’ve been in scenes and I’ve written a lot of scenes where there’s a great line, and you just get rid of it because it’s killing you. As a director of my own work, a lot of times … not a lot of times, but it is certainly enough times, there’s been a line in a scene and, in rehearsal, or at the morning before you start the scene, or talking to the actor and say, “Look, this line, here. I don’t wanna hear it. It’s right on the edge of being too much. Take the piss out of this line. Take me out of this. If I hear me in this scene, if I start to feel like I’m in the scene, I’m gonna do something else. So, let’s do everything you can to not lean into that.” I’m hyper-conscious about trying not to have lines where you just feel like the writer is just teeing up. It’s like playing golf where you’re only using the driver. It’s like, “Let me tee up on the green.” If you’re listening and you’re really hard on yourself, I think you get quieter and more natural as time goes on. Good lines don’t impress me that much anymore.

No?

No, no. I mean, every now and then you get one that does everything you want for it. It’s quiet, and it resonates, and it does everything. Every now and then, there’s this one, and you just go, “Oh, thank you,” and it has everything. It’s quiet. It’s real. It’s poignant. It sounds good. Everybody looks good, but I don’t know. If people are paying attention to lines, then they’re not in the story.

Prince Harry: Meghan Markle only ‘impressed’ by royal because of THIS says shock new book https://briefnews.eu/prince-harry-meghan-markle-only-impressed-by-royal-because-of-this-says-shock-new-book/ https://briefnews.eu/prince-harry-meghan-markle-only-impressed-by-royal-because-of-this-says-shock-new-book/#respond Thu, 12 Apr 2018 16:52:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/prince-harry-meghan-markle-only-impressed-by-royal-because-of-this-says-shock-new-book/

Prince Harry, 33, and Meghan Markle, 36, will soon tie the knot in a royal wedding ceremony at St George’s Chapel. The royal wedding date is May 19 2018.

However, there are claims LA born actress Meghan’s relationship with Prince Harry could easily have all gone wrong, according to a new biography.

The biographer claims timing was everything for the budding romance between Meghan and Harry.

Meghan would have made “friendly small talk” with Harry if they had met years earlier.

However, it would not have gone further if the pair had met at this time in their lives, claimed Andrew Morton in his new book Meghan.

He wrote in the book: “Prince Harry would not have impressed Meghan.”

“She would have found the early Harry hard work, something of a lost soul.”

Meghan and Prince Harry’s age gap is a three year difference.

This is more than other royal relationships such as Kate Middleton and Prince William’s marriage and Prince Charles and Camilla’s marriage, where the gap is just one year.

However, it seems Harry is now mature enough for his older bride, with the pair announcing their engagement last year after just a year nad a half of dating.

Prince Harry was known to have been very different a few years ago; for instance, back in 2012, he was pictured naked in Vegas.

Back in 2005, he faced public outcry when he was photographed wearing a Nazi uniform at a private party.

At another point in the book, Andrew described Harry’s younger self as “an angry drunk who lurched out of nightclubs”.

He added: “For years he was carefully protected by highly paid public relations professionals who smoothed over his public escapades.”

Last week, a royal insider exclusively commented to Express.co.uk on Meghan and Harry’s relationship and whether it will last.

It is believed the success of their marriage depends on Meghan, according to a royal insider.

The former Suits actress, who comes from Los Angeles, will have to withstand the pressure of royal life if she is to be happy with Prince Harry.

The source said: “I am a fan of Meghan and a few people keep asking me, ‘Do you think it will last?’”

“I think they will stay together if Meghan can handle the pressure of being a royal, which isn’t easy.”

“She will feel the pressure of having a schedule,” he continued. The source described what an average day might look like for the future royal.

“They will have a private secretary, who will come in in the mornings and give Ms Markle a letter of engagements in the day.”

BBC Breakfast: Charlie Stayt interrupts guest and viewers are NOT impressed https://briefnews.eu/bbc-breakfast-charlie-stayt-interrupts-guest-and-viewers-are-not-impressed/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-breakfast-charlie-stayt-interrupts-guest-and-viewers-are-not-impressed/#respond Thu, 29 Mar 2018 09:33:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-breakfast-charlie-stayt-interrupts-guest-and-viewers-are-not-impressed/

This morning’s edition of BBC Breakfast saw a heated debate between Charlie and his guest Nick.

Discussing the parole of the convicted ‘Black Cab Rapist’ John Worboys, Charlie was interrogating Nick on the proceedings during his time as head of the Parole Board.

However none of the answers Nick gave throughout the interview were not sufficient to Charlie, as he kept butting in mid-sentence.

Whilst detailing the position of the justice secretary, Charlie cut in for the first time.

“So Mr. Hardwick, if I may, if I may,” he shouted over Nick.

“You detail what looks like a catalogue of details directly related to a terrible decision that was made.

“Yet you say in the same breath that the justice secretary should remain in place?”

“I think the last thing that we need is a change in justice secretary,” he replied exasperatedly.

“I fully accept our role in this, others should do likewise.”

But the interruptions didn’t stop there, as Charlie continued to stop Nick’s questions.

Nick continued: “In this exceptional case they could have gone on to some of those alleged offences and used-“

Before Charlie cut in again: “Can you just explain that for us? Can you just explain? Did you simply not know that you could do that?”

And during his answer, Charlie dove in once again saying: “But I think I think I think – could I just ask you one other thing?”

As Nick answered this follow-up, Charlie continued to pry into his answers before he had finished: “Mr. Hardwick if I may, if I may – please can you address these serious issues?”

Getting completely fed up with the constant interruptions, Nick finally said: “I’m not very clear why my answer isn’t sufficient.

“Less than 1% of the people who come before us go on to make another serious offence. I think that’s a pretty clear answer isn’t it?”

Viewers on Twitter were quick to point out the strange interview, with one commenting: “Getting really tired of #CharlieStayt on @BBCBreakfast interrupting the people he interviews. This morning was nothing new, well done to the gentleman from the parole board for keeping cool.”

One added: “The man answered the question to the best of his ability and yet the presenter kept asking nonsense @BBCBreakfast.”

Another threatened to boycott the show saying: “@BBCBreakfast Charlie Stayte is the rudest interviewer on TV. He asks questions and doesn’t let people answer them. When they can get a word in he aggressively challenges the answers. I`m going to watch ITV the days he`s on!”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
