In an effort to battle the “illegal foreign garbage” influx into China, last July China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) that it plans to ban imports of 24 types of solid waste materials, such as soda bottles, mixed paper, recycled steel and newsprint. Despite the threat to implement the ban by the end of the year, the document stated that the “proposed date of adoption” is “to be determined.”

Concerned over the massive impact the ban could have on the US economy, on Friday the US trade representative urged China to re-examine its decision.

“We request that China immediately halt implementation and revise these measures in a manner consistent with existing international standards for trade in scrap materials, which provide a global framework for transparent and environmentally sound trade in recycled commodities,” the US spokesperson noted, at the WTO Council for Trade in Goods session in Geneva.

“China’s import restrictions on recycled commodities have caused a fundamental disruption in global supply chains for scrap materials, directing them away from productive reuse and toward disposal,” the trade representative pointed out, according to Reuters.

Washington’s demand came a day after President Donald Trump ordered the US Trade Representative (USTR) to levy tariffs on at least $ 50 billion of Chinese imports. Although the USTR was given 15 days by Trump to propose a list of Chinese products that will be targeted, China’s commerce ministry has already threatened to take legal action against the US through the WTO. The country is also contemplating targeting 128 American products through an imposition of harsh import tariffs.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry also made clear that it has all the necessary means to engage in a trade war with the US but urged Washington to reconsider its aggressive economic policy. Beijing warned that “the American consumers and enterprises will bear the brunt” of a trade war with China.

China is by far the biggest importer of US recyclables. Banning US junk imports will have a catastrophic impact on the US labor market and will drive up waste management costs. According to the US Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), in 2016 alone American scrap exports to China totaled $ 5.6 billion and provided the industry with 155,000 jobs. While the Chinese representative at the meeting in Geneva on Friday agreed to relate the US-voiced concerns to Beijing, the envoy still noted that, ultimately, individual countries are responsible for their own waste.

If the Asian giant closes off its waste management market, recycling centers across the US will be faced with a hard choice. They can either hire a much more expensive workforce which would raise prices for their services, require households to sort their own waste or be forced to use more landfills across all fifty US states.

The most viable option would be to redirect the flows of US garbage into third countries, which, however, may not have facilities for safe recycling. This would raise concerns over potential environmental damage, the EU’s representative noted at the WTO meeting.

“In any given year, approximately one-third of the scrap recycled in the United States is prepared for shipment to the export market, and China is the recycling industry’s largest customer,” ISRI President Robin Wiener told China Daily earlier. “This includes more than $ 1.9 billion in scrap paper and $ 495 million in scrap plastics. A ban on imports of scrap commodities into China would be catastrophic to the recycling industry.”

A surge in seizures of such dolls by border officials has led investigators to identify previously-unknown suspected pedophiles.

Churchwarden David Turner, 72, of Ramsgate, Kent, also admitted to possessing more than 34,000 images of child abuse. Some contained images of children as young as three.

Although he admitted importing and having sex with the 3ft 10in (117cm) doll – which is anatomically detailed and correct – he asked a judge for a ‘trial of issue’ to decide whether being in possession of a child sex doll was “indecent” or “obscene” in law.

In what is being hailed as a landmark ruling by the National Crime Agency (NCA), Judge Simon James, sitting at Canterbury Crown Court, turned down the application on Monday to dismiss the charge.

When NCA officers searcher Turner’s home in December, they found two child sex dolls which he kept in his study, and seized a computer, tablets and external hard drives.

Analysis of Turner’s computers showed he viewed websites selling items advertised as “flat chest love doll” and “mini silicone sex doll 65cm little breasts,” according to the NCA.

Officers also found 29 fictional stories, which described sexual abuse of children but fell outside the Obscene Publications Act, when they searched Turner’s home in Kent.

While being interviewed by police, Turner admitted to buying clothing for the doll and claimed he had bought it as a “companion” for him and his wife.

He also admitted that his preference was to view indecent images of children aged four to 10 and to “secretly” taking photographs of girls aged six to 11 in public places.

Border officials are reporting seeing more lifelike silicone sex aids, which weigh around 55lb (25kg), imported into the country. They can cost thousands of pounds, and are sold on sites such as Amazon and eBay, the NCA said.

The dolls, often manufactured in China and Hong Kong, are a “relatively new phenomenon” in the UK and should be criminalized, NCA’s Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command (CEOP) Hazel Stewart said in a statement.

“We know their purchase can indicate other offences against children, as was the case against Turner who had a sickening stash of abuse images.

“Importers of such obscene items should expect to have law enforcement closing in on them.”

Border Force officers have seized 123 dolls since March 2016, and so far seven people have been charged with importing them, including one man who was jailed last month.

Of the seven men charged with importing the dolls so far, six also faced child porn allegations.

Dan Scully, deputy director for intelligence operations at the Border Force, said this showed those who ordered the models often strayed into sex crimes.

“What’s critical, I think, for this investigation, these items were going to individuals, in many cases, who were committing other offences in relation to harm of children.

“They were also, critically, people who were otherwise unknown to UK law enforcement in having an interest in sexual activity with children.

“By identifying these importations, working with partners, what we’ve identified is a whole set of people with interests in sexual activity with children who were completely unknown.”

The trial of Turner has been described as setting an “important” precedent in how suspects can be prosecuted. While other men have been convicted for importing child sex dolls, this was the first case where the question of whether a doll is indecent or obscene has been tested by the courts.

Turner was unable to be sentenced on Monday because a pre-sentence report had not been prepared. Judge Simon James said the importation of a child sex doll was an “unusual offence” and that it “adds a degree of complexity.”

He will be sentenced on September 8. The maximum sentence is seven years.

For over forty days, hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans have taken over the main streets and roads of the country to protest against the dictatorial Venezuelan regime. Since the protests started, forty-two people have been killed, 2,371 arrested and thousands injured across the country.

Falling oil revenues due to low international oil prices, as well as the institutionalized government corruption, caused yet more protests, with the government once again using tear gas, water cannons and pepper spray alongside its paramilitary force – the “colectivos” (the heavily armed civilian branch of the “revolution”).

Venezuela’s economic, humanitarian and political crisis hit critical levels at the end of March, when Venezuela’s president and the Supreme Court of Justice initiated a process that would deprive the opposition-led National Assembly of its legislative powers. It is worth noting that the present Supreme Court of Justice was deviously designated by the previous National Assembly just days before they finished their period, a move designed to make it completely obedient to the Venezuelan president. Two days later, in response to the outcry of the international community, in particular from the Organization of American States (OAS), the Supreme Court tried to step back from its controversial dictatorial decision through a presidential mandate.

On May 1st, President Nicolas Maduro announced on national television that he would call an assembly to rewrite the country’s Hugo Chavéz Constitution. It was the solution that the government found to pacify the protest against him, but the opposition rejected this solution as an attempt to avoid new presidential elections.

Venezuelans are living day-by-day in a total chaos, facing a very complicated situation with rising crime and corruption rates, daily electric blackouts and shortages of both medicines and food (more than 80 percent). Venezuelans cannot get even the most basic lifesaving medical supplies such as common antibiotics. This critical situation does not seem to have an easy solution, due to the fact that most of the goods have to be imported due to Venezuela’s record low industrial output levels.

In its last report from May 11th 2017, OPEC reflected a steep fall in Venezuelan crude production. The cartel mentioned a decline of around 0.45 million barrels a day since 2015, putting the Venezuela production at 2.194 million barrels a day. Over the last 17 years, Venezuela’s oil production has decreased 1.135 million barrels per day representing a 34 percent reduction.

Venezuela is suffering gasoline shortages despite having the world’s largest oil reserves; Venezuelan refineries are operating significantly below capacity because they are facing operational problems due to a lack of investments and maintenance. Falling output at refineries means that Venezuela needs to import more gasoline, squeezing the national budget even further. Refineries are currently working at less than 30 percent of average 2016 levels. State-run oil company PDVSA is importing between 100 and 150 thousand barrels per day of gasoline. Several tankers are waiting off the coast of Venezuela to discharge cargoes as the PDVSA has difficulties to pay their ship bills, resulting in a penalty of $ 26 000 per tanker per day.

Nine out of ten Venezuelans think that the actual situation is president Maduro’s fault and the call for early presidential elections grows louder and louder. Venezuelans know this is the only way to save the country from the socialist dictatorship but they are conscious that it will not be easy in a country which is governed by Castro-Cubans, the military, “Narcos” and a small group of Chavéz devotees, according to Moisés Naím, a former Venezuelan minister of trade and Central Bank governor.

Today, Venezuela’s democratic masquerade has crumbled, showing the real face of a dictatorship. Venezuelans are famished and the only way they have to pressure the government is to take the streets and request presidential elections, as they have been doing for quite some time. While the Venezuelan regime is experiencing its lowest ever approval rating, the government has maintained its military branches in every key post in the Venezuelan administration, making a democratic solution unlikely.
