U.S. Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC) talks to reporters after a vote to hold longtime Donald Trump ally Steve Bannon in contempt of Congress at the U.S. Capitol in Washington

  • Rep. Nancy Mace says there's "a lot of pressure" on Republicans to impeach President Biden.
  • On NBC's Meet The Press, Mace said impeachment is being considered by some in the GOP.
  • She told host Chuck Todd that if the party chooses to hold a vote, she believes it will be divisive.

Rep. Nancy Mace says there's pressure on Republicans to vote to impeach President Biden if the party wins the midterms and gains control of the House.

Mace was on NBC's Meet The Press on Sunday, speaking with host Chuck Todd who asked: "Do you expect an impeachment vote against President Biden if Republicans take over the House?"

The South Carolina congresswoman answered, "there's a lot of pressure on Republicans to have that vote, to put that legislation forward. I think that is something that some folks are considering."

To which Todd responded, simply: "Wow."

On Wednesday, Rep. Adam Kinzinger said a GOP-majority Congress might try to impeach the president every week. Kinzinger was referring to Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has made impeaching Biden part of her official platform.

Last year, several Republicans filed impeachment articles criticizing Biden's withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan, his immigration policies, and his administration's eviction moratorium.

When asked by Todd how she would vote if impeachment was on the floor, Mace said she would look at the evidence and vote constitutionally.

"I will not vote for impeachment of any president if I feel that due process has been stripped away for anyone," she told Todd.

Mace said if the party chooses to hold this vote, she believes it will be divisive. "Which is why I pushed back on it personally when I hear folks saying they're going to file articles of impeachment in the House," she said.

While Mace voted against impeaching former President Donald Trump, she was critical of his role on January 6, telling CNN that Trump's "entire legacy was wiped out" in the aftermath of the Capitol riots.

Before January 6, Mace was a supporter of Trump's and even worked for his campaign in 2016.

During the interview with NBC, Todd asked the congresswoman if she would back Trump's presidential bid in 2024.

"I'm going to support whomever Republicans nominate in '24," she said.

Representatives for Mace did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

The Good Fight: How Low Did the Firm Go to Help the DNC Impeach Trump? https://briefnews.eu/the-good-fight-how-low-did-the-firm-go-to-help-the-dnc-impeach-trump/ https://briefnews.eu/the-good-fight-how-low-did-the-firm-go-to-help-the-dnc-impeach-trump/#respond Sun, 15 Apr 2018 20:19:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-good-fight-how-low-did-the-firm-go-to-help-the-dnc-impeach-trump/ This Sunday on The Good Fight, Reddick, Boseman and Lockhart was one of 10 firms eyed by the DNC to help pursue the impeachment of President Trump — if that time comes. How “low” did the partners have to “go” to stay in the running?

Margo Martindale guest-starred as Ruth Eastman, a DNC representative who pulled the firm’s partners into a top-secret and highly confidential pow-wow, where it was explained that if the Dems win the House and Senate this fall, they want to be ready to seek Trump’s impeachment. In such a scenario, what specific plan of attack would the firm suggest?

To start, Adrian recommends focusing on emoluments — how Trump has financially benefited from foreign powers while in office. Diane, meanwhile, would prefer to zero in on obstruction. Julius, having voted for Trump, chooses to play “devil’s advocate,” while Liz is silent to begin with — until she launches into a jaw-dropping monologue about how when working for the DOJ, she was perhaps privy to a behind-the-scenes Apprentice tape where Trump mocked black women… and rape charges filed against Trump by a 14-year-old Miss Teen USA contestant… and a story about Trump in a threesome with two porn stars.

Thing is, Liz is perhaps lying about it all, to make a point. That the pursuit of impeachment needs to be “shameless,” that it’s not about truth versus lying but who’s backtracking versus attacking. Liz’s passionate stance sends the firm into the next round of consideration.

At the next gathering, Adrian sides with Diane, saying that obstruction speaks to Trump’s self-serving nature, and who he is at heart. Julius concurs… but Diane now has changed her mind. She says she is tired of “When they go low, we go high” — instead, we need to go “lower,” she argues. “Lies persuade,” she says, and frankly she is “tired” of being the “compliant” adult when the fact is 3 million more people voted for Trump’s opponent. The partners question Diane’s eruption, but she makes clear that she has a Smith & Wesson in her desk and she is about ready to “take to the streets,” so frustrated is she with the “bad reality show” they have been living with for 450 days.

That outburst — which Diane later confided to Adrian was perhaps just for show — combined with the removal of Julius from the equation gets the firm into the final round. That’s where Eastman lets slip that the rival firm is more “staid and white-shoed,” so it’d behoove Reddick, Boseman and Lockhart to act more… “street.” So in the next debate, Adrian and Liz play that part, with Diane cast as the white peacekeeper. The end result? Liz is chosen from the firm to be a part of the Avengers-like legal team the DNC is assembling.

The A-story concluded with a Schoolhouse Rock-style song about impeachment, featuring cameos by a cartoon POTUS. “Tiny hands will scratch and claw, but nobody’s above the law” is a sample of the pointed (but educational!) lyrics.

Elsewhere in the episode:

* Lucca realized that Colin is running for congress — and already, her “pregnant black woman” status has been broadcast on Twitter. She replies by refuting the “Sally Hemings” comparison that had been made, tacking on a “#MoreLikeMichelle” hashtag, and  immediately begins trending. After seeing her social media stature get her back a client who had quit over her alleged “mood swings,” Lucca herself uses it to lay down some ground rules with Colin’s campaign manager about what’s to come.

* Maia and Amy went out with Marissa and her boyfriend, though the night got cut short when the latter got into fisticuffs with a dude who was sneaking upskirt pics. The whole ordeal rubbed Amy the wrong way, to the point that she made clear to Maia her disinterest in another double date. So when Marissa invited them out dancing the next night, Maia went stag — but soonenough bumped into Carine, the DNC staffer she had “met cute”with earlier. Some dirty dancing led to a liplock, and then some backseat Uber groping… until Carine got called back to the firm late at night. As Eastman gave Liz the good word, Carine and Maia resumed their romp… in the conference room, with the DNC’s cameras still plugged in!

Congresswoman Waters mixes up Putin and Pence while calling who to impeach after Trump (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/congresswoman-waters-mixes-up-putin-and-pence-while-calling-who-to-impeach-after-trump-video/ https://briefnews.eu/congresswoman-waters-mixes-up-putin-and-pence-while-calling-who-to-impeach-after-trump-video/#respond Sat, 05 Aug 2017 22:03:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/congresswoman-waters-mixes-up-putin-and-pence-while-calling-who-to-impeach-after-trump-video/

Democratic congresswoman Maxine Waters has long called for the impeachment of US president Donald Trump. In an emotional interview she’s now added to her list, VP Mike Pence… briefly confusing him with Vladimir Putin.

During an interview on ABC’s show “The View” Saturday, the long serving politician once again called for the impeachment of Trump adding this time that his vice president Mike Pence should suffer a similar fate.

However, in what was perhaps a freudian slip, the congresswoman said that once they were finished with Trump, Putin is next.

“Do you think Pence will be better than Trump if he were impeached?” asked the shows host Joy Behar.

“No,” Waters replied. “And when we finish with Trump we have to go and get Putin. He’s next.”

“Putin or Pence?” Behar asked.

“Uh, Pence,” Waters said amidst nervous laughter from the shows co-hosts.

Representative Waters has previously argued that Donald Trump will inevitably be impeached because of his alleged ties to the Russian president who she also claimed is “advancing in Korea.”

‘For high crimes and misdemeanors’: Dem Congressman submits resolution to impeach Trump https://briefnews.eu/for-high-crimes-and-misdemeanors-dem-congressman-submits-resolution-to-impeach-trump/ https://briefnews.eu/for-high-crimes-and-misdemeanors-dem-congressman-submits-resolution-to-impeach-trump/#respond Wed, 12 Jul 2017 21:06:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/for-high-crimes-and-misdemeanors-dem-congressman-submits-resolution-to-impeach-trump/ Representative Brad Sherman (D-California) has introduced a resolution to impeach President Donald Trump for “high crimes and misdemeanors,” including obstruction of justice over the president’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

The initiative, submitted to the House of Representatives, claims the president has “prevented, obstructed and impeded” a federal investigation into his former national security advisor, Michael Flynn.

Trump “sought to use his authority to hinder and cause the termination of such investigation(s) including through threatening then terminating James Comey who was until such termination the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” reads the proposed resolution.

In May, Trump abruptly fired Comey as the FBI director was leading an investigation into potential collusion between Trump’s aides and the Russian government during the 2016 presidential race.

A month later, Comey testified in Congress on the conversations he had with the president, which he said led him to believe that Trump asked him to stop looking into Flynn.

“I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy,” Comey remembered Trump saying, according to Comey’s written notes of their meeting.

The conversation took place on February 14, according to Comey’s memos ‒ the day after Flynn was fired over misleading Vice President Mike Pence about contacts he had with Russia’s ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak.

However, when asked during the June Congressional hearing if Trump “at any time” asked him “to stop the FBI investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 US elections,” Comey replied: “Not to my understanding, no.”

Even though many Democrats have accused Trump of obstruction of justice, party leaders seemed reluctant to formally back an initiative to impeach him when the calls first came in May.

Currently, the only co-sponsor on Sherman’s proposed House resolution is Representative Al Green (D-Texas).

Green was the first Congressman to call for Trump’s impeachment from the House floor in May.

“President Trump is not above the law. He has committed an impeachable act and must be charged,” Green said in a statement.

“Our mantra should be ‘I.T.N. – Impeach Trump Now,’” he said.

Impeachment is a three-part process outlined in the Constitution. It begins in the House of Representatives, where a simple majority can vote to impeach a federal official for “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.”

The definition is vague and has long been debated. In 1970, then-House Minority Leader Gerald Ford defined an impeachable offense as “whatever a majority of the House of Representatives considers it to be at a given moment in history.”

Once the House has voted to impeach, the issue heads to the Senate, which holds a trial. If the official in question is the president, then the chief justice of the US Supreme Court is the presiding judge, otherwise it is the vice president in his role as president of the Senate. The Senate needs a two-thirds majority, or 67 out of 100 votes, to find an official guilty and remove that person from office.

Only two presidents ‒ Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1999 ‒ have ever been impeached by the House, both of which history has judged to be highly partisan proceedings. Neither was convicted by the requisite two-thirds majority in the Senate. President Richard Nixon resigned in 1974, rather than go through an impeachment vote in the House.

House bill to impeach Trump gains momentum after Trump’s feud with ‘Morning Joe’ https://briefnews.eu/house-bill-to-impeach-trump-gains-momentum-after-trumps-feud-with-morning-joe/ https://briefnews.eu/house-bill-to-impeach-trump-gains-momentum-after-trumps-feud-with-morning-joe/#respond Sun, 02 Jul 2017 04:34:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/house-bill-to-impeach-trump-gains-momentum-after-trumps-feud-with-morning-joe/ TrumpGetty Images/Pool

Twenty-five Democratic lawmakers now back a bill that would give them a path to impeach President Donald Trump, Yahoo News reported.

The bill would create an Oversight Commission on Presidential Capacity, and it appears to be based on a loophole in the 25th Amendment which allows for the president to be removed from office if the Vice President and either a majority of Trump’s cabinet or a majority of Congress sign off on it.

The specific language of the relevant section of the amendment reads:

“Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.”

John D. Feerick, former dean of Fordham Law School, is one of the chief architects of the 25th Amendment who shepherded it through Congress in the early 1960s.

He told Business Insider in an earlier interview that the senators who signed the provision into law specified that declaring the president unfit must rely on “reliable facts regarding the president’s physical or mental faculties,” not personal prejudice.

“If you read the debates, it’s also clear that policy and political differences are not included, unpopularity is not included, poor judgment, incompetence, laziness, or impeachable conduct — none of that, you’ll find in the debates in the congressional record, is intended to be covered by Section IV,” Feerick said.

The House bill had 21 supporters last week, and four more Democrats signed on after the president fired off a series of inflammatory tweets Thursday aimed at “Morning Joe” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski.

“I heard poorly rated @Morning_Joe speaks badly of me (don’t watch anymore),” Trump began in a pair of tweets. “Then how come low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year’s Eve, and insisted on joining me. She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!”

The tweets earned Trump sharp criticism from both sides of the political aisle, with many of his staunchest allies saying the comments were unnecessary.

The bill is sponsored by Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin and has support from high-profile House Democrats like Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and former Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.

While the measure has gained steam among House Democrats, it’s unlikely it will garner enough support to pass. Though Democratic lawmakers say that some Republican congressmen have privately expressed interest in the measure, it still needs more support from the GOP. Moreover, even if it were to pass both chambers, the president would have to sign off on it. And if he vetoed the bill, which he almost certainly would, Congress would need a 2/3 majority to override his veto.

Lone congressman calls to impeach Trump on House Floor: Does it matter? https://briefnews.eu/lone-congressman-calls-to-impeach-trump-on-house-floor-does-it-matter/ https://briefnews.eu/lone-congressman-calls-to-impeach-trump-on-house-floor-does-it-matter/#respond Wed, 17 May 2017 19:15:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lone-congressman-calls-to-impeach-trump-on-house-floor-does-it-matter/ Representative Al Green (D-Texas) has called for impeachment proceedings to begin against President Donald Trump. His speech on the House Floor came as a group of Democrats distanced themselves from calls for impeachment.

“I rise today with a heavy heart,” Green began. “I rise today with a sense of responsibility and duty to the people who have elected me, a sense of duty to this country, a sense of duty to the Constitution of the United States of America. I rise today, Mr. Speaker, to call for the impeachment of the president of the United States of America for obstruction of justice.”

His call for impeachment was “not for political purposes,” Green said. “I do this because, Mr. Speaker, there is a belief in this country that no one is above the law, and that includes the president.”

Impeachment is a three-part process outlined in the Constitution. It begins in the House of Representatives, where a simple majority can vote to impeach a federal official for “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.” The definition is vague and has long been debated. Green’s speech on Wednesday morning came as Democratic leadership in the House held a press conference calling for an open-ended, independent investigation into any potential criminal wrongdoings by Trump and his associates.

“It seems like we are learning disturbing new allegations about President Trump not just every day, but every hour,” said Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland), the ranking member on the House Oversight Committee. “Our committee should already be conducting robust and transparent investigations.”

He faulted House Republicans, specifically Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) and Oversight Committee Chair Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), for doing “as little as humanly possible just to claim that they’re doing something.”

Under a bill proposed by Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-California), Congress would create an independent, bipartisan commission of 12 people to investigate alleged Russian meddling into the 2016 presidential election, any collusion with the Trump campaign and accusations by former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump abruptly fired last Tuesday, that the president urged Comey to drop a probe into Michael Flynn, Trump’s disgraced former national security adviser.

“Our democracy is a mess,” Swalwell said. “Today is a courage call for our Republican colleagues. Can they put party aside and unite with Democrats?”

The Democratic minority in the House stopped short, however, of calling for articles of impeachment, although House Democratic Caucus Chair Joseph Crowley (D-New York) noted that “members can come to their own conclusions” about whether the president should be impeached.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-California), the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, warned that any steps must be bipartisan, and that hasty talk of impeachment would become a distraction.

“It cannot be perceived as an effort to nullify the election by other means,” he said.

Only two presidents ‒ Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1999 ‒ have ever been impeached by the House, both of which history has judged to be highly partisan proceedings. Neither was convicted in the Senate. President Richard Nixon resigned in 1974, rather than go through an impeachment vote in the House.

“We are at a very significant moment in this country’s history,” Cummings said. “We need to get this right,” no matter how long it takes because “this is bigger than us, this is bigger than President Trump. This is about the soul of our democracy.”

As Trump’s approval ratings have dropped, Republicans are hearing from their constituents that they need to do more when it comes to investigating the president, CNN reported. Only 42 percent of Americans approve of Trump, according to a new Politico/Morning Consult poll released Wednesday. It was conducted after the Comey firing but before news broke of his memo or that Trump may have disclosed classified information from an ally to Russia.

So far, only one GOP representative has publicly said that impeachment may be an option. Rep. Justin Amash (R-Michigan), a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus and a frequent Trump critic, said that, if it turns out that Trump pressured Comey to drop the Flynn investigation, it would be grounds for impeachment, The Hill reported.

“But everybody gets a fair trial in this country,” Amash told reporters as he left a House GOP conference meeting. When asked if he trusted Comey’s word over Trump’s, he replied: “I think it’s pretty clear I have more confidence in Director Comey.”
