  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis defended his decision to fly dozens of migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard.
  • Over the weekend, he suggested that those migrants "hit the jackpot" by landing in Massachusetts.
  • But immigration experts say that language is dehumanizing and dangerous.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis continues to praise his own politicking after flying dozens of migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard last week, but immigration experts say the stunt was dehumanizing to the migrants at the center of the controversy and minimized the oft-harrowing journeys endured by asylum-seekers.

DeSantis in the last week has faced criticism and compliments for the decision, in which Florida chartered two planes to fly about 50 undocumented migrants from San Antonio, Texas, to the Massachusetts island.

The GOP lawmaker's office later clarified that the move was part of Florida's "relocation program to transport illegal immigrants to sanctuary destinations" — the most recent effort by GOP leaders to highlight what they call a crisis at the US Southern border.

Immigration advocates have uniformly rebuked the stunt, accusing DeSantis of prioritizing politics — and specifically, his aims for higher office — over the real lives of the Venezuelan and Colombian migrants caught in the crossfire.

"We all know this is sheer political theater," Vicki Gaubeca, director of Southern Border Communities Coalition, told Insider. "Florida is not on the US-Mexico border, so the migrants were transported to Martha's Vineyard from Texas on Floridians' dime."

She added that, instead of "caring about human beings fleeing political or economical disasters and providing a humane, orderly solution," DeSantis, along with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, "chose to lay bare their cruelty, add another layer of suffering and make the problem worse."

During a weekend speech at a Republican rally in Wisconsin, DeSantis doubled down on the move, saying that the migrants he sent to Martha's Vineyard had "hit the jackpot to be in the wealthiest sanctuary jurisdiction in the world."

It's carefully-chosen language on DeSantis' part but doesn't represent the reality for most migrants, according to immigration experts.

"Migrants being transported under false pretenses, away from their intended home communities, with the families and friends willing to receive them, to an island with no immigration courts or ICE field offices where migrants can check-in, can hardly be considered 'hitting the jackpot,'" Nicole Ramos, Al Otro Lado's Border Rights Project director, said in a statement to Insider.

"It looks more like a different shade of family separation to me," Ramos continued.

The migrants who landed in Martha's Vineyard last week were given misleading brochures promising cash assistance and job placement services before touching down on the island, according to lawyers for the migrants. Some of the asylum seekers also told NPR that a woman, who solely identified herself as "Perla," promised they would receive work permits in Boston after arriving.

The migrants on Tuesday filed a federal class action lawsuit against DeSantis, claiming that the incident was a "premeditated, fraudulent, and illegal scheme."

The governor's ongoing rhetoric, including his "jackpot" remark, could have longterm, harmful repercussions for migrants, according to Pedro Rios, director of the American Friends Service Committee's US/Mexico Border Program.

"By suggesting that the migrants he flew to Martha's Vineyard have a hit a 'jackpot,' he minimizes the harrowing experiences migrants have faced in their home countries and what they've encountered along dangerous routes," Rios told Insider.

He added: "This has the effect of dehumanizing them, which makes it easier for DeSantis' supporters to be intolerant of people in vulnerable conditions and easier to deny migrants and asylum seekers basic rights and protections."

Many migrants face danger and even the threat of death during their immigration experience, only to be met with further animosity once they reach the US, Rios said, which can have significant impacts on a person's mental health.

Earlier this week, an asylum seeker died by suicide in a New York City homeless shelter, Mayor Eric Adams announced on Monday. While there were few details released about the incident, Adams said at a press conference that the woman's death highlights the traumatizing experiences many migrants face.

"All local and state jurisdictions have the obligation to welcome migrants and asylum seekers with measures that uplift their dignity, that prioritize their emotional, mental, and physical integrity," Rios said.

Around a third of people think their governments are ‘hiding the truth’ about immigration — here’s why people believe conspiracy theories https://briefnews.eu/around-a-third-of-people-think-their-governments-are-hiding-the-truth-about-immigration-heres-why-people-believe-conspiracy-theories/ https://briefnews.eu/around-a-third-of-people-think-their-governments-are-hiding-the-truth-about-immigration-heres-why-people-believe-conspiracy-theories/#respond Sat, 24 Nov 2018 04:39:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/around-a-third-of-people-think-their-governments-are-hiding-the-truth-about-immigration-heres-why-people-believe-conspiracy-theories/ Linda Sarsour at the immigration protestWin McNamee/Getty Images

  • About a third of people in countries like the US, UK, and France believe conspiracy theories about immigration.
  • They think the government is lying to them about immigration figures.
  • According to a new study, there’s an association between voting for Trump or Brexit and believing these theories.
  • Voting this way is also linked to believing conspiracies about climate change and vaccination.
  • Some people believe conspiracy theories because it makes them feel unique.
  • Others hold on to them because they are comforting and it gives them an explanation for their hardships.

One of the most divisive and influential talking points of elections around the world over the past few years has arguably been immigration. So much so, many people now believe conspiracy theories about how the government is lying to them about immigration figures.

In 2016, Donald Trump promised to “build a wall” between the US and Mexico, and to bring back jobs to the American people. In the UK, Nigel Farage ran a campaign saying the country had reached a “breaking point” with immigrants, and Britain had to leave the EU to fix it.

Income, tax and immigration data stolen in Healthcare.gov breach https://briefnews.eu/income-tax-and-immigration-data-stolen-in-healthcare-gov-breach/ https://briefnews.eu/income-tax-and-immigration-data-stolen-in-healthcare-gov-breach/#respond Sat, 10 Nov 2018 02:44:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/income-tax-and-immigration-data-stolen-in-healthcare-gov-breach/

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) now has details about the data stolen in the breach of Healthcare.gov that occurred last month. According to the government agency, a significant amount of personal information including partial Social Security numbers, tax information and immigration status was compromised in the breach. No financial information was stolen.

In a post hidden on a Healthcare.gov page titled “How we use your data,” the CMS confirmed the breach occurred and said it started to alert via phone call the 75,000 affected people starting November 5th. That notification will be followed by a letter detailing the breach and what information was compromised.

In the letter, CMS discloses the entirety of the information stolen by hackers, and it’s a fairly substantial list of data points:

  • Name, date of birth, address, sex, and the last four digits of the Social Security number (SSN), if SSN was provided on the application;
  • Other information provided on the application, including expected income, tax filing status, family relationships, whether the applicant is a citizen or an immigrant, immigration document types and numbers, employer name, whether the applicant was pregnant, and whether the applicant already had health insurance;
  • Information provided by other federal agencies and data sources to confirm the information provided on the application, and whether the Marketplace asked the applicant for documents or explanations;
  • The results of the application, including whether the applicant was eligible to enroll in a qualified health plan (QHP), and if eligible, the tax credit amount; and
  • If the applicant enrolled, the name of the insurance plan, the premium, and dates of coverage.

The letter does note that bank account numbers and credit card numbers were not compromised. Any diagnosis or treatment information was also inaccessible the hackers. This is also not the first time Healthcare.gov has suffered from a breach, though no sensitive data had previously been stolen.

The original breach was discovered on October 16th, when CMS spotted agent and broker accounts performing excessive searches for consumers. Through those searches, it was possible to gain access to personal information of people listed on Healthcare.gov Marketplace applications. CMS has since shut down the agent and broker accounts involved in the searches. Agent and broker functions have also been shut off until additional security improvements are made.

  • According to analysis by media outlets, Democrats have “a Latino problem,” showing that Latino turnout may be low this November.
  • Even if Latinos vote in large numbers, the so-called “Latino vote” might be deceiving.
  • As it turns out, there are a lot of factors — eligibility, geography, incorrect assumptions about preferance, and inaccurate polling — that show the Latino vote will most likely not swing the midterms.

Democrats are ready to turn out in record numbers for November’s midterm elections, surveys show, particularly women and older voters.

But not all members of the party are as motivated.

German immigration policy under fire after gang-rape of young woman in Freiburg https://briefnews.eu/german-immigration-policy-under-fire-after-gang-rape-of-young-woman-in-freiburg/ https://briefnews.eu/german-immigration-policy-under-fire-after-gang-rape-of-young-woman-in-freiburg/#respond Sat, 27 Oct 2018 08:33:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/german-immigration-policy-under-fire-after-gang-rape-of-young-woman-in-freiburg/ German police have arrested eight people, including seven Syrian refugees and a German citizen, over their suspected involvement in a group sexual assault on a 18-year-old woman in the city of Freiburg.

The incident took place on the night of October 14 but the police only issued a detailed report on the matter after all major suspects were detained. The victim, whose identity has not been revealed, attended a disco party at one of the local clubs, where she became acquainted with a Syrian asylum seeker, the police said in a statement.

He bought her a drink and the pair then left the club together, the statement adds. The man is alleged to have then dragged the woman into nearby bushes and raped her. The perpetrator then left his victim in the bushes and returned to the club to “call his friends,” the German Bild daily reports.

The woman was subsequently raped by at least seven other men. According to police, the victim could not resist the assaults and was left “completely defenseless” as she was allegedly “intoxicated” by an unknown substance. German media reported that the drink the Syrian bought her might have contained “knockout drops” or some drugs.

The woman survived the encounter and filed a complaint to the police the next day. In the two weeks following the assault, officers detained seven Syrian nationals, who “were mostly living in the refugee shelters” in and around Freiburg, as well as a German citizen. The investigators also said that they “cannot rule out that other persons were involved” in the incident.

The Syrian suspects are between 19- and 29-years old, while the German is 25, the police said, providing no further details of the suspects’ identities. “Almost all the… suspects have been previously known to police,” the statement said, without revealing the exact nature of their previous misdemeanors.

The incident has once again fueled anti-immigrant sentiment in Germany, which has accepted more than a million refugees and asylum seekers since the 2015 refugee crisis, sparking resentment among some parts of the population.

“It is apparently a sheer coincidence that the particularly multicultural Freiburg hits the headlines again and again because of the particularly brutal sex crimes,” one person sarcastically wrote on Twitter. It is indeed not the first such incident in the western German city. Back in 2016, Freiburg was shocked by the death of Maria Ladenburger, a 19-year-old medical student, who was raped and drowned by an Afghan asylum seeker.

Other people were seemingly shocked by the brazenness of the crime. “A [rapist] would ‘usually’ quickly sneak away [being] ashamed of the rape. But this Syrian had also called his buddies. Who could even understand that?” another person wrote in a tweet.

Some also blamed the German authorities for the incident. “All detainees were known to police because of earlier crimes. Why are they still in our country?” a person asked rhetorically. “This rape could have been prevented. The accomplices sit in the Bundestag!” another man wrote in an apparent attack on Germany’s asylum and immigration policies.

The German media also received its share of criticism over what some described as inadequate coverage of the incident. “No, Tagesschau, that is not how it works today. [You] dedicated only a small note to the rape in Freiburg but issued a minutes-long video report about some ‘trumpets in rental apartments.’ Intention? Importance? In such a way, the media like you unfortunately provide a distorted picture,” a person wrote on Twitter, referring to a news show aired by the German public broadcaster, ARD.

The German anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party also rushed to condemn the incident and promote some of its ideas. “What else should actually happen in our country before it will be acknowledged that multiculturalism is not something that is right? All the perpetrators were known to police… but roam free and gang-rape a defenseless woman,” the Bavarian branch of the right-wing party tweeted.

Bolton and Kelly exchange profanities outside Oval Office over immigration policy https://briefnews.eu/bolton-and-kelly-exchange-profanities-outside-oval-office-over-immigration-policy/ https://briefnews.eu/bolton-and-kelly-exchange-profanities-outside-oval-office-over-immigration-policy/#respond Fri, 19 Oct 2018 01:37:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bolton-and-kelly-exchange-profanities-outside-oval-office-over-immigration-policy/ A heated, obscenity-filled exchange over immigration between the chief of staff John Kelly and national security adviser John Bolton has shocked the aides in the West Wing, sparking fears of possible White House reshuffling.

Two of President Donald Trump’s top aides were not shy to express their opinion about the progress made to stop illegal immigration into the US. Sparring just outside the Oval Office, Kelly reportedly tried to defend the performance of his protege, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who has allowed a record number of immigrants into the country. In the extremely loud, profanity-laced verbal fight that unfolded in front of multiple witnesses, Bolton attacked the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for failing to implement Trump’s immigration policy – according to reports by Bloomberg, CNN and Washington Examiner citing anonymous sources inside the White House.

Trump, who earlier in the day threatened to shut down the border with Mexico, reportedly sided with Bolton’s argument. While Bloomberg and CNN sources noted fears of a possible resignation from one of the two men following the fight, the Examiner referenced three sources to say that both men will stay in the White House.

The commander in chief and the White House downplayed the incident, with just weeks to go before the mid-term elections next month and news of another migrant caravan headed towards the US through Mexico.

“I’ve not heard about it. No,” Trump told reporters Thursday afternoon when asked about the fight, before departing to Montana for a campaign rally.

“While we are passionate about solving the issue of illegal immigration, we are not angry at one another,” said White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

A “zero tolerance” policy on border control has become the cornerstone of Trump’s domestic political agenda, but sparked a mass public outrage after thousands of migrant families were separated at the border. According to most recent DHS statistics, a total of 16,658 family members were arrested at the southern border last month, becoming the highest one-month total on record. The new numbers, which marked an 80 percent increase from July, are making the US president highly critical of DHS and Nielsen’s tactics, senior administration officials told Washington Post on Wednesday.

After recently turning his attention to the “caravan” of migrants making their way from Latin American countries to the US, Trump tweeted Thursday just before his two top aides got into an argument.

“I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught,” he said, threatening to close the border using the US military if that doesn’t happen.

Kelly, who retired from the US Marine Corps with the rank of general, was Trump’s first Homeland Security Secretary. When he was asked to take over the White House in July 2017, his longtime aide Nielsen was tapped to replace him. Bolton became Trump’s national security adviser in March this year, having previously served as the hawkish ambassador to the UN under President George W. Bush.

Outrage as MPs call immigration hotline 68 times in a year https://briefnews.eu/outrage-as-mps-call-immigration-hotline-68-times-in-a-year/ https://briefnews.eu/outrage-as-mps-call-immigration-hotline-68-times-in-a-year/#respond Fri, 12 Oct 2018 15:44:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/outrage-as-mps-call-immigration-hotline-68-times-in-a-year/ UK politicians have been accused of breaching the trust of their constituents after it was revealed that an immigration enforcement hotline was called 68 times by MPs or their staff in the last year.

Of the 68 calls from MPs, 34 were from Tories, 32 from Labour, one from the Lib Dems, and one from the DUP.

Charities have argued that people should not have to fear their own MPs. They have written to Commons Speaker John Bercow, demanding that lawmakers pledge not to inform on their own constituents.

Of the 107 MPs that have already signed up to the pledge, only one – Heidi Allen – is a Tory.

The stats were unveiled in written questions by Labour MP David Lammy, which also revealed that between September 30, 2012, and May 25, 2018, MPs were responsible for 723 reports to the Home Office over alleged immigration abuses.

The charities that signed the letter indicated that they would advise people not to seek advice from MPs who did not take the pledge, the BBC reports. The letter requests that Bercow raise the issue in the House “at the earliest opportunity and request that party whips instruct their MPs to immediately cease the practice.”

“MPs have a responsibility to advocate for all their constituents, regardless of immigration status,” it states.

“Many migrants are now fearful of contacting their MP, effectively excluding them from democratic representation.”

Akram Salhab, coordinator for Migrants Organize and Global Justice Now, said: “Some have said that they will not report people for immigration enforcement but may do if they have committed a crime. But these are separate issues – if someone has committed a serious crime, they should be reported to the police, not the Home Office.”

One of the MPs who admitted calling the hotline was Conservative MP Christopher Chope.

“I have reported cases of immigration crime on behalf of constituents who have felt their neighbors are engaged in illegal working when they shouldn’t have been in the country,” he told the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire program.

“Home Office policy is very much to ensure that, as far as possible, life is made uncomfortable for those one million illegals, so that they will be encouraged to go back to where they came from rather than be a burden on our public services here,” Chope added.

  • A scathing watchdog report accused an immigration detention facility in California of providing substandard medical and dental care.
  • One of the two dentists overseeing the 1,700 detained immigrants said he doesn’t provide cleanings or fillings because he doesn’t have time.
  • The dentist suggested that immigrants who can’t afford floss from the commissary can prevent cavities by flossing with strings from their socks.

A California detention center housing nearly 1,700 immigrants provides such substandard medical care that inspectors called it a “significant threat” to immigrants’ health and well-being, a recently released Homeland Security watchdog report said.

Particularly troubling to the inspectors who in May visited the Adelanto facility, located about 85 miles northeast of Los Angeles, was the lack of dental care immigrants received, according to the inspector general’s report.

  • “Icebox” is the feature debut for director Daniel Sawka and is based on his award-winning short film that looks at the US immigration policy from the perspective of a migrant young boy trying to get to the US.
  • The short film caught the attention of legendary director/producer James L. Brooks (“The Simpsons,” “Terms of Endearment”) who produced the feature version.
  • The lead of “Icebox” is Anthony Gonzalez, the star of the Disney hit “Coco.”

Though the Toronto International Film Festival is where the major studios and established players from the independent film world launch Oscar campaigns, the festival can still have a few surprises.

This year those include “Icebox,” one of this year’s TIFF world premieres that could find itself in the running for award season consideration with the big boys by year’s end thanks to a ripped-from-the-headlines story and the backing of one of the most powerful producers in Hollywood.

Canadian Little Leaguer not able to join team at World Series due to immigration issue https://briefnews.eu/canadian-little-leaguer-not-able-to-join-team-at-world-series-due-to-immigration-issue/ https://briefnews.eu/canadian-little-leaguer-not-able-to-join-team-at-world-series-due-to-immigration-issue/#respond Tue, 14 Aug 2018 08:14:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canadian-little-leaguer-not-able-to-join-team-at-world-series-due-to-immigration-issue/ As the other young baseball players from Whalley, B.C., ran to each other on the diamond to celebrate their national Little League championship victory Saturday in Mirabel, Que., Dio Gama raced to his father. Both dad and son realized the bittersweetness of the moment.

Tears streamed from the 13-year-old boy's eyes as he hugged his father, Noe Gama, because he knew he wouldn't be travelling with his teammates to the Little League World Series this week in Williamsport, Pa.

Dio Gama, who was born in Las Vegas to Mexican parents, has lived in Canada for three years. His parents have been seeking refugee status in Canada for more than a decade, but the family's case remains in legal limbo after a federal judge ordered a review of their case last month.

The process has been complicated by the fact that Noe has previously been denied status in Canada. In 1997 he was convicted on a drug charge in the United States. Under a plea agreement, Noe received a 60-month prison sentence and agreed to deportation from the U.S. He was transferred to a Mexican prison to complete his sentence and was released in 2001. In 2008, Noe first arrived in Canada with a visitor visa and claimed refugee protection.

The family hoped its case would be resolved by now, but just days before the national championship game, the family got a letter from its lawyer saying the application was still pending and advising that Dio should not leave the country because there was a chance he wouldn't be allowed back into Canada.

The team left Sunday for Williamsport without Dio.

"This has always been my dream, to play for Canada at the World Series," Dio said before boarding his flight back to Vancouver. "I was playing the national championship like it was my last game with my team."

Dio Gama has been advised against leaving Canada to join his B.C. teammates in Pennsylvania for fear he won't be allowed back in the country. 1:13

'He's torn into 100 pieces'

Dio kept it all a secret. He didn't tell his coaches or teammates he wouldn't be able to fulfil his dream of playing in the Little League World Series if the team won the Canadian title.

Still, with all that weighing on him, Dio turned in his best performance of the tournament in the championship game. He hit two triples and drove in four runs to help Whalley to an 11-0 victory over Glace Bay, N.S., that earned them a spot in Williamsport.

"I had a great game," Dio said. "I had fun and I'm happy about that because I knew it was probably my last game with my team."

His father watched every second of the game from the stands in Mirabel and was emotional throughout.

"He's torn into 100 pieces," Noe Gama said of his son. "As soon as the game was over he came to me and started to cry. It's so difficult for him and me."

As soon as the celebration ended after the game, Noe approached Whalley's head coach, Mike Marino, to share the news with him.

"We were devastated," Marino said from the team bus travelling to Williamsport Sunday afternoon. "Not only is he a leader of the team but he's a great kid. He was devastated. We all are."

Holding out hope

Marino says Dio joined the team this past year with the hope of helping them get to the World Series. Because Dio is 13, this was his last chance of getting to the prestigious event.

Marino felt the poise the young player showed in the championship game, considering the circumstances, was remarkable.

"It shows courage, maturity and a sense of belief in himself. He may be 13 but acts like at 17- or 18-year-old."

Whalley Little League manager Mike Marino spoke with CBC Sports' Matt Cullen after winning the Canadian Little League Championship with his son Joey. 2:49

The team is trying its best to get Dio to the World Series.

Marino says they've written a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau explaining the situation and are also contacting other politicians.

"We're doing everything we can right now. We want to get him flown in for the World Series," Marino said.

Dio is still holding out hope he can be part of his Canadian team in Williamsport.

"I appreciate what everyone is doing right now," he said. "This has always been my dream."
