Saturday Night Live newbie Chris Redd got his biggest showcase yet this weekend, portraying Will Smith in an alternate version of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

The pre-taped sketch was an extension of the ’90s sitcom’s opening title sequence — only this time around, those “couple of guys who were up to no good” were part of a very real street gang whose leader was played by Method Man.

The gang then followed Will to Bel-Air, trashing Aunt Viv’s mansion and forcing him to hide out at a motel. It was there he met Jessica Chastain’s character, who knocked on the door, introduced herself as an FBI agent and told him his chances of survival were slim. The bit culminated in a shootout featuring a gangsta Uncle Phil (played by Kenan Thompson), and a bleak future for the West Philadelphia native.

New York is huge. 8.5 million people live in the Big Apple according to 2016 census data. It seems impressive until you realize that there are 15 megacities in China that blow New York away with populations over 10 million. All those humans in one area means that traffic can be a challenge. One company think it has a commuter solution. A very boxy commuter solution.

Project Redspace’s REDS is an EV commuter vehicle that doubles as an office. The company says that a car spends 90 percent of its time sitting idle. So why not make it your mobile workspace? It achieves this with a chair that swivels 180-degrees and a fold down desk. If it also served Starbucks coffee, it would be the perfect workspace for travelers.

That car also has a modular offset seating solution with the chairs not directly behind each other for more leg room and those seats can be moved about the cabin. The doors slide like a minivan instead swinging out like a traditional car. Helpful for tight parking spaces. Meanwhile, the roof is a giant solar panel to help keep the EV charged up. It will also support wireless charging sort of like the BMW 530e.

While the idea is intriguing, the workspace/car will be far more intriguing once cars get to level 4 autonomy. But, it’s good to see new automakers thinking about how to evolve the interior of the vehicle before self-driving eventually becomes a reality.

According to the automaker, it will have these vehicles on the road in China in two years. It calls the car it’s showing off at the LA Auto Show an “alpha prototype.” So the final vehicle might not look as striking as the one on display in the convention center. As for US shores, there are no plans to bring it to our less-than-mega cities. Which kind of sucks if you really like boxes.

Airbus has showed off a new helicopter concept at the Paris Airshow that could give operators everything they want: speed, versatility and economy. The Racer (rapid and cost-effective rotorcraft) features a main rotor like a regular helicopter, but uses pusher propellers to accelerate it forward and a new “box-wing” system for extra lift. As a result, it’ll power along at up to 400 km/h (250 mph) while being able to take off on a dime like a regular chopper.

The Racer is based on Airbus Helicopters’ X3 prototype helicopter, which set a helicopter speed record at 255 knots in level flight in 2013. Like that model, it uses the main rotor for STOL take-off capabilities, but once the propellers start pushing forward, the main rotor slows down and the box wings take on some of the lifting chores. As such, it works a bit like a hybrid gyrocopter, though such aircraft use unpowered main rotors and powered pusher props.

It will improve on the X3 in a few areas. It uses a single shaft (with a gearbox) and twin-engine Safran RTM322 engines, making it easier to maintain. The concept also moves the propellers behind the wings, isolating passengers from noise and vibration — an idea it patented back in 2014.

To further reduce noise and increase speeds, Airbus replaced the rear tail rotor with a simple tail wing. Anti-torque for the main rotor will instead come from the counter-rotating propellers, or “lateral rotors,” as Airbus calls them. The aim is to offer 50 percent more speed than a normal helicopter, with just 25 percent more cost, saving operators over 20 percent per mile, per passenger.

Regular helicopters can normally fly up to around just 160 mph, because at cruising speeds, the advancing main rotor blades have a much higher relative speed than the retreating ones. As a result, the retreating blades can approach a “stalled,” non-flying condition if the speed is too high, while the advancing blades can be buffeted by shock waves as they hit near-supersonic speeds.

The Airbus X3 and Racer get around this by decreasing the main rotor RPM by around 15 percent at high cruising speeds. The pusher props over the thrusting chores, while the wings can handle as much as 80 percent of the lift, helping the next-gen copters fly faster and more economically. “It will pave the way for new time-sensitive services for 2030 and beyond, setting new benchmarks for high-speed helicopter transportation,” said Airbus Helicopters CEO Guillaume Faury in a statement.

In 1903, Edwin S. Porter‘s short film The Great Train Robbery became one of the first blockbuster films. At just 12 minutes long, it was still a milestone achievement in American filmmaking as it employed production and editing techniques previously unheard of in filmmaking. It’s considered the first ever American action film, and one of the earliest westerns to have a recognizable form to it.

So how would a screenwriter pitch a movie to director Edwin S. Porter without any other films besides The Great Train Robbery to compare it to? Well, as the short film The First Pitch imagines, it would have gone very poorly.

Nowadays, so many films are pitched as Three Amigos meets Apocalypse Now (Tropic Thunder) or Back to the Future meets The Hangover (Hot Tub Time Machine) that it’s hard to imagine what some pitches might have been like during the early days of filmmaking when so many innovative stories had yet to be told.

In this case, it’s fun to imagine something completely different from The Great Train Robbery being sold without a good reference point. The short incorporates enough tongue-in-cheek cliches about the film industry today to give it an even more modern spin, but it could use a little more clever comedy injected into the mix to really make it pop. But as a commission for Tribeca Film Festival’s Comedy Night, this isn’t half bad.

The creators and stars of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine have launched an Indiegogo campaign to produce a documentary about the show. What We Left Behind will tell the story of the third fourth Star Trek series as told by (most of) the people who made it. More than that, however, the film has assembled the show’s writing team (including Ronald D. Moore) to map out what a mythical eighth season of the show would look like. Sadly, the AV Club beat us two pointing out that this is basically that Portlandia sketch, but in real life.

In just over a day, the project has smashed through its original $ 150,000 target and is pushing toward $ 200,000. It’s something of a vindication for the show that — when it launched — was treated as the red-headed stepchild of the Star Trek universe. Now, after living through Voyager and Enterprise, fans have come to appreciate the show for what it is. Backers can contribute $ 15 to be able to watch the show when it’s available, which is expected to be around February 2018.

The team behind the documentary has plenty of experience producing Star Trek retrospectives. Director Adam Nimoy made For the Love of Spock, while producers 455 Films was behind Chaos on the Bridge, The Captains and Get a Life!. In addition to showing you what the eighth season of DS9 would have looked like, viewers will also be able to see how much the cast have changed in the last nearly two decades. Most notably, you’ll be able to see Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko) and Hana Hatae (Molly O’Brien) now that they’re adults.

Of course, what’s interesting here isn’t the documentary itself, but the fact that we’re inching ever closer to pop culture’s nostalgia singularity. After all, online platforms have seen plenty of classic TV shows getting revivals, many of which were produced with cash from fans. Beyond the Star Trek fan films Veronica Mars, Reading Rainbow, Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Thunderbirds 1965 were all bankrolled by members of the public. In addition, online education site Masterclass hired Aaron Sorkin to re-break the fifth season opener of The West Wing for his screenwriting course.

Let’s be honest, but for Joss Whedon’s reluctance, it’s only a matter of time before someone actually secures $ 50 million to make a second season of Firefly.
