Narrow beauty standards can have serious impacts on body image for LGBTQ people, who already face higher rates of eating disorders and other mental illnesses. Further fuelling fears of not being accepted over their identity or orientation, some people can go to dangerous lengths to look a certain way.

Scientists are wasting no time in pointing the powerful new James Webb Space Telescope all over the Universe, as well as into our own backyard. Recently, astronomers took data on the eighth planet from the Sun in our Solar System, Neptune. NASA released the first images of this world on Wednesday.

The third-largest planet in our Solar System, Neptune often appears bright blue in images due to the presence of gaseous methane. The Webb telescope, however, observes light in the infrared portion of the spectrum, so its “Near-Infrared Camera” photos show a ghostly white planet. This is because the methane in Neptune’s atmosphere absorbs reddish and infrared light.

In the new view of Neptune, the exception to this is the planet’s high-altitude methane ice clouds, which reflect sunlight before it can be absorbed by the methane. These appear as brilliant, bright features, NASA says.

Scientific publishers such as the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and Taylor & Francis have begun attempting to detect fraud in academic paper submissions with an AI image-checking program called Proofig, reports The Register. Proofig, a product of an Israeli firm of the same name, aims to help use “artificial intelligence, computer vision and image processing to review image integrity in scientific publications,” according to the company’s website.

During a trial that ran from January 2021 to May 2022, AACR used Proofig to screen 1,367 papers accepted for publication, according to The Register. Of those, 208 papers required author contact to clear up issues such as mistaken duplications, and four papers were withdrawn.

In particular, many journals need help detecting image duplication fraud in Western blots, which are a specific style of protein-detection imagery consisting of line segments of various widths. Subtle differences in a blot’s appearance can translate to dramatically different conclusions about test results, and many cases of academic fraud have seen unscrupulous researchers duplicate, crop, stretch, and rotate Western blots to make it appear like they have more (or different) data than they really do. Detecting duplicate images can be tedious work for human eyes, which is why some firms like Proofig and ImageTwin, a German firm, are attempting to automate the process.

A Webb Telescope image is being used to push malware https://briefnews.eu/a-webb-telescope-image-is-being-used-to-push-malware/ https://briefnews.eu/a-webb-telescope-image-is-being-used-to-push-malware/#respond Tue, 06 Sep 2022 02:53:17 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/a-webb-telescope-image-is-being-used-to-push-malware/ One of the first images taken by the James Webb Telescope that was released by NASA was the "sharpest infrared image of the distant universe to date." It's a wondrous photo showing a detailed cluster of galaxies. It's also currently being used by bad actors to infect systems with malware. Security analytics platform Securonix has identified a new malware campaign that uses the image, and the company is calling it the GO#WEBBFUSCATOR.

The attack starts with a phishing email containing a Microsoft Office attachment. Hidden within the document's metadata is a URL that downloads a file with a script, which runs if certain Word macros are enabled. That, in turn, downloads a copy of Webb’s First Deep Field photo (pictured above) that contains as a malicious code masquerading as a certificate. In its report about the campaign, the company said all anti-virus programs were unable to detect the malicious code in the image.

Securonix VP Augusto Barros told Popular Science that there are a couple of possible reasons why the bad actors chose to use the popular James Webb photo. One is that the high-resolution images NASA had released come in massive file sizes and can evade suspicion in that regard. Also, even if an anti-malware program flags it, reviewers might pass it over since it's been widely shared online in the past couple of months.

Another interesting thing of note about the campaign is that it uses Golang, Google’s open-source programming language, for its malware. Securonix says Golang-based malware are rising in popularity, because they have flexible cross-platform support and are more difficult to analyze and reverse engineer than malware based on other programming languages. Like other malware campaign that starts with a phishing email, though, the best way to avoid being a victim of this attack is to avoid downloading attachments from untrusted sources.

Citizen scientist shares stunning image of Jupiter’s atmosphere https://briefnews.eu/citizen-scientist-shares-stunning-image-of-jupiters-atmosphere/ https://briefnews.eu/citizen-scientist-shares-stunning-image-of-jupiters-atmosphere/#respond Sat, 03 Sep 2022 20:01:13 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/citizen-scientist-shares-stunning-image-of-jupiters-atmosphere/ We’re used to thinking of Jupiter as an orangey-brown sort of color, with its distinctive colored features like the Great Red Spot. But a recent image of Jupiter shared by NASA shows the planet in quite a different color palette, showing the planet’s clouds in two different formats. Firstly, there’s the planet as the human eye would see it, in Earthy, browny beige shades tinged with green. And secondly, there’s a saturated version that shows off the details of the cloud formations in vivid teals and greens.

The images were made from data taken by NASA’s Juno spacecraft, and they were processed by citizen scientist Björn Jónsson, an amateur image processor who shares his work with the public.

NASA’s Juno spacecraft observed the complex colors and structure of Jupiter’s clouds as it completed its 43rd close flyby of the giant planet on July 5, 2022. Citizen scientist Björn Jónsson created these two images using raw data from the JunoCam instrument aboard the spacecraft. At the time the raw image was taken, Juno was about 3,300 miles (5,300 kilometers) above Jupiter’s cloud tops, at a latitude of about 50 degrees. North is up. At that moment, the spacecraft was traveling at about 130,000 mph (209,000 kilometers per hour) relative to the planet.

Turning observations from spacecraft or telescopes into an image is a detailed process requiring many particular decisions about color, contrast, and balance, which affect how the final image turns out and which features it emphasizes. It is possible to process an image to make it as close to what we would observe personally if we were to travel to the object, like the image of Jupiter on the left. But it’s also useful to make adjustments like turning up the saturation and contrast to help see features like cloud shapes in sharper detail, as you can see in the image of Jupiter on the right.

In the more saturated image, you can see features of Jupiter’s atmosphere like its deep swirling vortices, and the different colors can help to pick out different chemicals making up the atmosphere.

The reason Jónsson was able to process these images is that all Juno data is made publicly available in its raw form on the mission’s website, and members of the public are encouraged to try their hands at processing the data for themselves. While you’re there, you can also see more of Jónsson’s stunning images, plus many other images processed by other citizen scientists.

Spitting Image co-creator’s regret over ‘puppet that went a little too far’ https://briefnews.eu/spitting-image-co-creators-regret-over-puppet-that-went-a-little-too-far/ https://briefnews.eu/spitting-image-co-creators-regret-over-puppet-that-went-a-little-too-far/#respond Wed, 30 Sep 2020 17:48:06 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/spitting-image-co-creators-regret-over-puppet-that-went-a-little-too-far/

The satirical show hit the headlines this week after Greta Thunberg was unveiled in a preview for the upcoming season, due to be released on October 3. Some viewers blasted creators for their choice to create a puppet of the 17-year-old climate change activist, who has autism. But Reemah Sakaan, an ITV spokesperson, fired back and stated that the depiction had “nothing to do with her as an individual”, in an interview with the Broadcasting Press Guild. During previous runs of the hit show, the creators drew similar criticism for their depiction of a range of world leaders, politicians, celebrities and the Royal Family. But in a candid confession, one of the show’s creator’s admitted that one character portrayal was unfair and “rather hurtful”.

Peter Fluck was the caricaturist who devised ‘Spitting Image’ with Roger Law, which was initially rejected by TV producers but eventually developed and first broadcast in 1984.

While many feared being featured on the programme – best known for its portrayal of former Prime Minister John Major in grey to suggest he was dull – there was one person who longed for an appearance.

He claimed that Lord Jeffrey Archer lobbied producers and “used to send photographs and voice tapes” alongside letters to ask “when his puppet would be ready”.

Mr Fluck also revealed that he felt guilty about his portrayal of a notable Fleet Street journalist and now ‘Loose Women’ panelist.

He told The Telegraph in 2008: “I think Janet Street-Porter was the only puppet which went a little too far and it didn’t work.

“I think she looked rather like an onion. I should imagine it was rather hurtful but the point was, it wasn’t funny.”

Despite the harsh scrutiny of leaders, several defended their portrayal on the show including Lord Roy Hattersley, who he claimed they “mercilessly attacked”.

“People were losing their jobs, mines were being closed and Christ knows what was going on – people wanted a programme that wasn’t afraid to tackle those issues.”

In a warning to future satire shows – including ‘Headcases’, an animated series that was dubbed the “son of Spitting Image” – Mr Fluck expressed the absolute need for political scrutiny.

He said: “I think the danger today is that the focus is going to gear too much towards the celebrities.

“We live in a celebrity-obsessed age but if you have a go at that, you just don’t put them on the screen.

“That is playing the game. You have to get behind the façade of the celebrity culture.”

‘Spitting Image’ will be released on streaming service BritBox on October 3.

“Neighbours can also be key witnesses.  It can, however, be difficult to involve 3rd parties as they may also be concerned for their safety/relationship with the perpetrator.

“The victim can also find a lot of shame in having to approach friends/family/neighbours for this information but in my experience, those who witness this behaviour are often willing to help the victim,” she added.

Both Eileen and Cathy are friends of Yasmeen and Geoff, with the former working alongside Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine), Geoff’s son.

On several occasions, Eileen has been stumped when she heard one of Geoff’s excuses about Yasmeen.

Avengers 4 Endgame: Major EXCITING Hulk news confirmed by THIS ‘Jade Giant’ image https://briefnews.eu/avengers-4-endgame-major-exciting-hulk-news-confirmed-by-this-jade-giant-image/ https://briefnews.eu/avengers-4-endgame-major-exciting-hulk-news-confirmed-by-this-jade-giant-image/#respond Sat, 06 Apr 2019 01:41:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/avengers-4-endgame-major-exciting-hulk-news-confirmed-by-this-jade-giant-image/

Everyone knows Hulk is rather fond of the occasional “smash” at any time. So it was a shock when he refused to come out and play during Infinity war, leaving Bruce to fend for himself. When and how Hulk would ever return has been one of the biggest mysteries going into Endgame. Even the current Avengers 4 marketing has been very careful to only show the man, not the (not very) jolly green giant on posters and in trailers. Until now.

It was never in doubt Hulk would show up but there have been increasing rumours (and hopes) he might transform into the popular Professor Hulk incarnation.

A leaked promo poster from last year showed a far more human-looking Hulk, which matches the comicbook variation.

Now the Marvel website has unveiled a new range of Endgame figurines which include the Hulk.

AVENGERS ENDGAME DIRECTORS REVEAL ‘DESTRUCTION’ WHICH WILL CHANGE MCU FOREVER

The description reads: “The Avengers line-up may have been decimated in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War – but that doesn’t mean we’re lacking in incredible collectables based on the survivors! Thanks to Diamond Select Toys, we can celebrate the characters continuing the good fight in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame with a variety of statues and action figures.

“Ant-Man, Iron Man MK85, and a deluxe Hulk will kick off the action as parts of the nine-inch-scale Marvel Movie Gallery Avengers: Endgame PVC Diorama line.”

Fans will be thrilled to see the Jade Giant suited up and flexing his muscles in battle once more.

Fans will also notice the very clear grey hairs at his temples.

This will feed into ongoing speculation there is a time-jump between Avengers 3 and 4.

Welcome back, big guy, we missed you.
