He currently has a solo show up at 1988, and it concerns one of our favorite topics: things we liked when we were kids.

“Raised by Rainbows” features art inspired by everything from Calvin and Hobbes to Back to the Future, reimagined via alphabets, movie posters, and trips to the video arcade. The publishers of handsome, newly illustrated literary classics (and friends of Flavorwire) have just released The Folio Book of Horror Stories. Edited and introduced by British horror writer Ramsey Campbell, it features stories by the likes of Edgar Allan Poe, H. P. Lovecraft, Shirley Jackson, Thomas Ligotti, and Stephen King, all supplemented by new illustrations from Corey Brickley.

It makes an excellent companion to their earlier Folio Book of Ghost Stories, featuring an introduction by Kathryn Hughes, illustrations by David McConochie, and stories by Charles Dickens, Ambrose Bierce, Vladimir Nabokov, A. S. Byatt, Arthur Conan Doyle, and many more. Both volumes are available on Folio Society’s site, but we were lucky enough to get a taste of their terrifying illustrations, which we hope you’ll enjoy as much as we do.

HBO’s series adaptation of Westworld has reinvigorated interest in Michael Crichton’s original 1973 film; Big Little Lies became a bestseller again after HBO’s miniseries adaptation; Hulu’s acclaimed The Handmaid’s Tale has boosted sales of Margaret Atwood’s book (and even the original 1990 film version). So hopefully this month’s HBO movie adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 will bring some new readers to that classic book – and if so, boy do we have a suggestion for how to read it.

Our friends at Folio Society have given the book their customary four-star treatment, with a handsome new edition supplemented by Sam Weber’s illustrations and cover design. It’s available exclusively on their website– and if you’re in the mood for more classic dystopian sci-fi while you’re there, they’ve just released a gorgeous new binding of Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend with art by Dave McKean. We’ve picked out a few of our favorite images from each, below.

Jessica Jones season 2 hits Netflix this week, and the creators behind the Marvel series found a creative way to announce the new episode titles. In keeping with the season’s all-female director line-up, a team of female artists put together a series of pulp cover illustrations. See the illustrations and Jessica Jones season 2 episode titles below.

Jessica Jones remains the best Marvel series in Netflix’s line-up, and season 2 keeps the momentum going with an all-new adventure for everyone’s favorite superhuman, heavy-drinking private eye. Season 2 isn’t quite as good as season 1, but star Krysten Ritter‘s performance is more than enough to keep you hooked on the series. As I said in my review:

The show’s main draw remains Ritter and her marvelous lead performance. Equal parts droll, damaged and fierce, Ritter is so damn charismatic that she’s able to carry most of the lopsided season with seeming ease, and almost (almost) distract you from plotting issues. Sure, it might be slightly cliched at this point to watch Jessica knock back a staggering amount of booze while providing wry, hard-boiled narration – but it works. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg has assembled a dynamite team of all-female directors for season 2, and now the series has unveiled its season 2 episode titles with a series of posters drawn by female artists. In keeping with the show’s pulp mystery tone, the posters have been crafted in the style of pulp fiction detective novels. Based on the art, and some of the titles, there are potential spoilers for season 2 here. Having seen most of the season I can confirm the art here really doesn’t give away that much. But, if you were hoping to remain 100% spoiler-free, you might want to take heed. Everyone else, please feel free to enjoy these great pieces of art.

And if you saw the latter film, you might know that she uses visual art as yet another outlet for her distinctive style and voice. Hence, our friends at Gallery1988 have mounted another full-on, fancy-artist Kate Micucci exhibition.

We asked her about what guides her as an artist. “I jump around from job to job so i have to set aside a giant chunk of time to make art,” she says. “I thrive on assignment. I like to set a show date and then draw and paint for a month until my hand hurts. And at first it’s usually kinda slow going, but once I hit the groove, it feels awesome. Like I could draw forever. So setting the assignment, finding the groove, and then working as much as possible. All the while listening to music. Music helps the motor.”

And, like any other artist, she has a story she’d like to tell, and a vision of the world to convey. “I think of all of my cartoons as mini stories,” she explains, “I guess I’m telling the stories of these characters I make. I rarely plan what I’m going to draw. It just starts to come out and I go with it. The goal is for people to see a bit of themselves in it. Something they relate to. I keep the character faces so simple so that the viewer can project their own emotions onto it. I try to keep it light and funny for the most part. It’s a weird time out there.  I just hope my work can bring some pops of joy into someone’s day.”
