Former Flames star forward Jarome Iginla will announce his retirement from the NHL on Monday at 12:30 p.m. ET at the Saddledome in Calgary.

The 41-year-old native of St. Albert, Alta., played 16 of his 20 seasons with the Flames, scoring 525 goals and 1,095 points in 1,219 regular-season games. Overall, Iginla posted 625 goals and 1,300 points in 1,554 contests for Pittsburgh, Boston, Colorado, Los Angeles and Calgary.

He also stood out in the post-season, adding 37 goals and 68 points in 81 playoff games.

Iginla last played in the NHL during the 2016-17 season, recording six goals and nine points in 19 starts with the Kings.

6-time all-star

"It's been a fun adventure, for my family and I. Some great cities, great people. To be back in Alberta, though, will feel like home," Iginla said in a message posted to the Flames' Twitter account.

The league's top goal-scorer and point-getter in the 2001-02 season with 96 and 52, respectively, he was a six-time all-star with the Flames and is the franchise leader in games played, goals, points, even-strength goals (351), power-play goals (161) and game-winning goals (83).

Iginla scored his 500th goal with the Flames on Jan. 8, 2012, helping them snap a five-game winless streak and sending the home fans into a frenzy.

Iginla became the 19th member of the NHL's 600-goal club four years later while a member of the Avalanche, notching a power-play marker to help lift Colorado to a 4-1 victory over the Kings.

Iginla was dealt to Pittsburgh at the trade deadline in 2013, signed with Boston the following season and capped his career with Colorado and L.A.

Twice a 50-goal scorer — he also reached the plateau in 2007-08 — and 40-goal man, Iginla reached the 30-goal mark 11 times

He guided Calgary to the Stanley Cup Final in 2004, his first season as captain, when it dropped a seven-game series to the Tampa Bay Lightning and led all scorers that post-season with 22 points in 26 outings, including 13 goals.

The Dallas Stars drafted Iginla 11th overall in 1995 and traded him to Calgary that December along with fellow forward Corey Millen for centre Joe Nieuwendyk.

Iginla made his NHL debut in the 1996 Stanley Cup playoffs, collecting a goal and an assist in two games. He scored his first regular-season goal on Oct. 5, 1996, and played all 82 games that season to finish runner-up to New York Islanders defenceman Bryan Berard in Calder Trophy voting for top rookie honours.

Internationally, he will be remembered for his pass that set up Sidney Crosby's Olympic overtime winner in the gold-medal game against the U.S. in Vancouver in 2010.

Iginla, a three-time Olympian, also won Olympic gold in 2002 and captured titles with Canada at the world championship (1997), World Cup (2004) and world junior championship (1996).

While current NHL players can’t play in the upcoming Olympics, recently retired ones will be eligible.

That thought has Team Canada head coach Willie Desjardins excited about the prospects of having hockey greats Shane Doan and Jarome Iginla in the fold. 

Desjardins says Doan is on the team’s radar right now. He also pointed to Iginla, whose NHL aspirations might shift to an Olympic focus if things don’t work out with the Los Angeles Kings.

“Those guys are two very special hockey players, what they’ve done in the NHL and in hockey is exceptional,” he said. “They’re both great leaders.”

Both Doan and Iginla are from the 1995 hockey class.

Earlier this week Doan announced his retirement after a 21-year career in the NHL. The Alberta native is the Arizona Coyotes’ leader in games played, goals, assists, points, power-play goals and game-winning markers. He was drafted seventh overall by the Winnipeg Jets in 1995, playing one season in the Manitoba capital before the team shuffled off to the desert.

Meanwhile, Iginla is set to enter another NHL season after being traded late last season by Colorado to L.A. He spent his first 15 years of his career in Calgary and was a two-time 50 goal scorer. Last season in Colorado, however, Iginla had eight goals and 18 points in 61 games.

Desjardins says while the wealth of experience of both players bring can be a great asset to the team, the only way he would consider adding them to the roster is if both sides felt they could still contribute in a meaningful way on and off the ice.

“For those guys, they just want to play if they can make a difference,” he said. “That’s how they’ve been built their whole life.”

Desjardins and the coaching staff recently returned from Russia where Team Canada played six games over 12 days, winning four of those matches. More than anything it was a chance to get a first look at a number of roster hopefuls hoping to make the team.

“The European game is a different game. I couldn’t believe the speed in that game when I was over in Sochi. It was so fast,” Desjardins says.

With that in mind, Desjardins says they’ll be constructing a team that can play 60 minutes of hockey at that same high-intensity speed.

‘They have to have a plan to play’

Dave King, Team Canada assistant coach and longtime bench boss in international hockey, says management is in talks with a lengthy list of players like Doan and Iginla about joining the team.

And while those conversations are ongoing, King says the biggest factor in deciding whether Doan and Iginla will be considered is if the veterans intend on continuing to play at a high level elsewhere.

“For ex-players like Doan, guys like that, they have to have a plan to play,” says the former NHL coach.

“If they’re going to play somewhere maybe in Europe and stay active then we have a lot of interest because they’re good players. But it’s really going to be important for these NHL players that have some interest that they have a plan to play.”

King, much like Desjardins, was impressed by the speed of the games the team participated in last month. He’s no stranger to Russian and European hockey, having spent years coaching across the ocean. King was also Canada’s coach at the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Olympics, all teams void of NHL players.

If Doan, Iginla or anyone else with lengthy and illustrious NHL careers think they can rest on their names to make the team, they need to think again.

“It’s very difficult to think they can just come in and play in a couple tournaments and then show up [at] the Olympics and play at a high level. That won’t work because the competition is very, very good.”

The men’s national team is playing in the Karjala Cup in Finland from Nov. 8-12.

Team Canada then has two more tournaments in mid-December to evaluate another group of players. And there’s a chance Doan and Iginla might just be wearing the red and white at one of those events if Desjardins and King have it their way.

“They’ve put so much into our game and when you have people who do that you certainly take the time and talk and see where they’re at,” Desjardins said.

Could the next Canadian Olympic men’s hockey team have some star power after all?

Team general manager Sean Burke said Tuesday that he’s inquired about the plans and potential availability of long-time NHLers and current free agents Shane Doan and Jarome Iginla.

Burke, who’s building the first Canadian Olympic roster without NHL players since 1994, suggested that both former Olympians would have to be playing somewhere if they were to be considered. He reached out to their representatives on Tuesday morning.

“We want to look at all possibilities, but there has to be a long-term plan because it’s going to very intense [at the Olympics] and it’s going to be great hockey and guys are going to have to have a plan for the year,” Burke said on a conference call, which also included the team’s head coach Willie Desjardins.

Whether or not the two veterans would be interested is another question.

“We really are not dealing with this issue as of now,” Don Meehan, Iginla’s agent, said in an email to The Canadian Press.

Canada just completed two tournaments in Russia with 45 players vying for spots on the Olympic squad in Pyeongchang. That group included former NHLers like Derek Roy, Mason Raymond, Max Talbot and Gilbert Brule.

Goaltending was split between former Edmonton Oiler and Toronto Maple Leaf Ben Scrivens, Justin Peters, who played three games for the Arizona Coyotes last year, and Kevin Poulin, who’s totalled 50 games with the New York Islanders.

Increased pace, intensity

Doan recently completed his 21st season with the Coyotes, who announced earlier this off-season that their long-time captain would not be re-signed. The soon-to-be 41-year-old represented Canada at the 2006 Olympics in Italy.

Iginla, who had 14 goals and 27 points playing for the Avalanche and Kings last season, has played for three Canadian Olympic teams, including gold medal-winning groups in 2002 and 2010.

Their involvement in the 2018 Games would preclude a return to the NHL for the coming season. The league decided against allowing its players to participate following five consecutive appearances, beginning in 1998.

“We just played games in August and the pace of these games and the intensity was very good and that’s going to increase as we move along so anybody that’s going to play on this team, no matter what their pedigree or what they’ve done in the past, we’re going to consider,” Burke said.

The Canadian GM, who played for Canada at the 1988 and 1992 Olympics, said he hoped to have the bones of a roster put into place by November when Canada takes part in the Karjala Cup in Finland.

Two of the more compelling players who may change addresses before the NHL trade deadline next Wednesday are veteran forwards Shane Doan and Jarome Iginla.

Both are eligible to become unrestricted free agents this summer and both are willing to waive their no-trade clauses to chase a Stanley Cup, a trophy that has evaded them in their long and distinguished careers.

The 40-year-old Doan has resisted in the past to move on from the Arizona Coyotes, citing loyalty and family reasons for his decision.

He has played his entire career with the Winnipeg Jets/Coyotes organization, and when members of the inaugural 1996-97 Coyotes club were honoured on Saturday evening, there was Doan — still playing.

In a humorous twist, one of Doan’s teammates from 20 years ago, Hockey Hall of Famer Mike Gartner, accidently signed the back of Doan’s sweater. Doan played with the autograph visible in the hopes it might bring him some luck.

Supporting roles

The 39-year-old Iginla also said “no” to the possibility of a trade in his second season with the Colorado Avalanche a year ago. But he would gladly take a title shot with a new team this spring.

He’s been down this road before. Iginla asked Calgary, his longtime team, for a trade before the 2013 deadline and chose the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Boston Bruins, only to have his new team swept by the Bruins in the East final.

Even though their production is way down this season — Doan has five goals in 57 games after scoring 28 times last season, while Iginla has scored seven goals in 57 outings after checking in with 22 in 2015-16 — contending clubs could be interested in adding the veterans.

The fact that Iginla plays on the 30th-place Avalanche and Doan is with the 29th-place Coyotes has not helped their cause this season.

Both players, however, are durable and would bring in leadership, experience as well as a physical element. They would be support players, finding a spot in the top nine forwards and perhaps on the second power-play unit.

Iginla remains a threat on the side at the faceoff dot with his one-timer ability. Doan is a net-front presence who still possesses an excellent capacity to protect the puck and retrieve the puck after missed shots or errant pass attempts.

Old friends

Even though Doan and Iginla have been rather light in terms of playoff experience and haven’t won a Stanley Cup, they are proven winners. Doan, in his 22nd NHL season, hasn’t been in the post-season since 2012, when the Los Angeles Kings eliminated the Coyotes in the West final. He has only 55 playoff games to his credit but has won two world championships with Canada in 2003 and 2007.

Iginla, in his 21st NHL season, has 81 games of playoff experience. He went to the final with the 2003-04 Calgary Flames, and won Olympic gold in 2002 and 2010.

Iginla and Doan were teammates with the winning Canadian side in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey but also suffered through the disappointment of the Canadian team that lost in the quarter-finals of the 2006 Olympics.

The Albertans go way back. They won back-to-back Memorial Cup championships with the Kamloops Blazers in 1993-94 and at home in 1994-95.

They then went to the draft in Edmonton, not far from their family homes. Iginla hails from the Edmonton suburb of St. Albert, while Doan was raised a couple of hours southeast in Halkirk.

Doan was taken seventh overall by the Winnipeg Jets. Iginla was selected four spots later by the Dallas Stars, but then traded a few months later to the Flames for Joe Nieuwendyk.

With the exception of the few times Doan and Iginla have played together for Canada, the friends have butted heads in the NHL as opponents for more than two decades.

In a way, they are opponents for this upcoming trade deadline because what they offer to a contender is similar. That’s why it will be interesting to see what develops for the two friends in the next 10 days.
