Oprah Winfrey is back on TV to help tackle the coronavirus crisis: The beloved talk show host just dropped a surprise special about the pandemic on Apple TV+, interviewing actor Idris Elba about testing positive for the virus.

The special, part of a series titled Oprah Talks COVID-19, is available to stream now, and is free to non-subscribers as well, Winfrey announced via Twitter on Saturday night. In it, she video-chats with Elba and his wife Sabrina Dhwore, who are quarantined together after Elba was diagnosed with coronavirus. Elba talks about living with the disease, which has swept the globe and now has totaled more than 25,000 cases in the U.S. alone, and Dhwore reveals the results of her own test.

Ana Ortiz is bringing the love to Disney+: The Ugly Betty vet will co-star in the streamer’s Love, Simon series, inspired by the 2018 movie of the same name, our sister site Deadline reports.

The half-hour spinoff — from This Is Us showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who co-wrote the film — will carry the same title as the movie, but will follow a new character named Victor. Ortiz will play his mother, Isabel.

The coming-of-age film followed a closeted gay teen (played by Nick Robinson) growing up in the suburbs of Atlanta. Jennifer Garner co-starred as Simon’s mom.

Ortiz is coming off ABC’s one-and-done drama Whiskey Cavalier. Her other TV credits include Devious Maids, The Mindy Project and Marry Me.

This evening the 46-year-old star returns for series 5 of the BBC’s Luther. And with Elba back in the spotlight, it’s not surprising that support for him to be the next is once again rampant. Just yesterday his odds of being the actor to replace Daniel Craig were slashed from 4-1 to 3-1 with Coral. And now following a further flurry of bets, Elba is 5-2 to be the next Bond. A spokesman for the bookmakers said: “If this gamble is correct, we could be set for our first ever black actor playing James Bond as we are being knocked over with interest in Idris Elba becoming the next 007.”

Meanwhile, James Norton is still ahead at 9-4 and Tom Hiddleston remains the favourite at 6-4.

There’s certainly a trend of male leads in BBC dramas being tipped to be the next Bond.

Interest in Norton spiked a year ago today when he starred in McMafia’s first episode wearing a tuxedo in a casino.

Similarly a couple of years ago, Hiddleston starred as a spy in The Night Manager.

And just a few months ago Richard Madden was the favourite while starring in MI5 drama Bodyguard.

He’s now down to 8-1, so perhaps Elba’s spike in support will only last as long as Luther.

After all, Craig only starts shooting his fifth and final Bond movie this March for a February 2020 release.

With that in mind, Bond producers won’t be auditioning a new 007 until at least 2022.

The 46-year-old has been a bookies favourite to replace Daniel Craig for a few years, and now his latest odds have slashed yet again following his return as Luther. Elba was at 4-1 to be the next after Craig bows out in his final movie next year. However, with series 5 of Luther premiering on BBC One on New Year’s Day, he’s now down to 3-1 with Coral. A spokesman for the bookmakers said: “Idris Elba is set to hit our screens again on New Year’s Day as DCI John Luther and ahead of the return of the show, punters have been rushing in to back him to become the next James Bond.”

Elba is now only just behind Tom Hiddleston at 6-4 and James Norton on 2-1.

Meanwhile, the previous frontrunner Tom Hardy is lagging behind on 6-1, alongside Richard Madden at 8-1, Aidan Turner at 16-1.

Following speculation during the summer that he was being lined up to replace Craig,

In August he tweeted: “My name’s Elba, Idris Elba.”

However, a few days later he tweeted: “Don’t believe the HYPE.”

The source of the rumours was director Antoine Fuqua, who told the Daily Star that Bond producer Barbara Broccoli now thinks “it is time” for a non-white 007.

Antoine said: “Idris could do it if he was in shape. You need a guy with a physically strong presence. Idris has that.”

Bond 25 will be released in UK cinemas on February 14, 2020.

Less than two weeks ago the Bodyguard and Game of Thrones star was 20-1 with the bookies in the race to be the next .

However Madden has now seen his odds slashed to an impressive 6-1 according to Coral.

A spokesman for the bookmakers said: “Richard Madden has proved during the BBC One drama Bodyguard that he has what it takes to be a future James Bond actor.

“And following a flurry of bets over the last few days, his odds have been slashed on becoming the next 007.”

Meanwhile Craig’s final outing, currently only known as Bond 25, is having big production problems.

With shooting set to start on December 3, it was announced recently that director Danny Boyle had stepped down over creative differences.

Rumours are circling he left because Craig and he disagreed on casting for Bond 25’s villain, but also that the incumbent actor wanted his 007 to die.

Bond 25 is set for release in October 2019, but may get delayed.

For months, Hardy and Norton had been jointly top of the betting with most bookmakers.

But now, after Barbara Broccoli was reported to have said she is finally open to casting a black 007, Elba’s odds have been slashed.

With Betfair, he is the new 2/1 favourite, leapfrogging both Hardy and Norton as punters rush to put money on his appointment.

The latter two are now on 3/1, with Sam Heughan still a hairline behind on 7/2 in the wake of his work in Outlander and The Spy Who Dumped Me.

Cillian Murphy is on 5/1, with Jack Huston priced at 7/1, Aidan Turner on 8/1 and This Is Us star Justin Hartley on 9/1.

Tom Hiddleston, former favourite, is now a relative longshot on 11/1.

Yesterday director Antoine Fuqua claimed Broccoli had told him “it is time” for the list of James Bonds to be diversified.

Antoine told the Daily Star: “Idris could do it if he was in shape.

“You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that.”

Craig’s replacement is not expected to be announced for a long time yet – with Craig yet to even start production on his own fifth and final outing as the iconic spy.

That as-yet-untitled film goes starts filming at the end of 2018, with a view to release in late 2019.

Craig had implied when he confirmed his involvement last year that the 25th film in the long-running series would be his last.

Speaking on US TV after speculation that he wouldn’t even do one more movie, he clarified: “I always wanted to [return], I needed a break.

“I just want to go out on a high note, and I can’t wait.”

Other casting for Bond 25 remains unclear, but Mark Strong is thought to be in line for a role.

James Bond 25 is due out in late 2019.

WARNING – Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War.

The 45-year-old played Heimdall in Thor, Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Thor: Ragnarok before also appearing in Infinity War.

However he was among the first to meet a sticky end; being murdered by Thanos in the film’s opening minutes.

Taking to Twitter, he posted a photo of the character along with the caption: “#SpoilerAlert Gonna miss my guy…Heimdall…”

It had only been last year when Elba spoke about wanting a bigger role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although presumably at that point he already knew his ultimate fate.

“It’s been great, but I kinda think I need a bit more,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

“I want to be a superhero. I like the idea of that.”

Interestingly, he had said it was only with 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok that he had started to enjoy the role; thanks mainly to the approach of director Taika Waititi.

“I like that I have a little part in Thor. I’m neither movie star or day player,” he mused.

“It allows me to do other things I love.

“The last one [Ragnarok] was fun. The others weren’t fun. They’re work.

“But on this one, Taika [Waititi, the director] was great.”

Avengers: Infinity War has had the second-biggest second weekend of all time at the US box office, logging a huge $ 111.6 million.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is slightly ahead; having made $ 149 million in its second frame back in 2015.

Variety notes that only five movies have ever topped $ 100 million in their second weekends in the USA.

Avengers: Infinity War is out now.

Premiering on Sky 1 at the end of the month is brand new comedy sitcom written by Idris Elba.

In The Long Run is set in London in the 80s and os based on the actor’s childhood and family life growing up in the east end.

Episode one airs on March 29 at 8pm on Sky 1.

Based on Elba’s own mother, Appiah said Agnes is “a Ghanaian-Sierra Leonean woman, it’s 1985 and she is living in Leyton”.

“When we meet her she’s happy. They’ve come over years beforehand, and they’ve had that transition from what that would have been like in the 70s to finding their own community, their set-up, their rhythm.”

“He’s a bit of a fish out of water,” he says of his character.

“It’s the first time Valentine has come to London – I think he’s been missing his big brother and he comes over with that blind innocence.

“He’s determined but also he’s a guy who lives his life – he has fun and he doesn’t take things too seriously.

“I think he enjoys being the younger, cheeky brother,” he added.

Bill Bailey – Terry ‘Bagpipes’ De La Croix

Comedian Bill Bailey stars as the Easmon’s neighbour Bagpipes who is a “typical working class bloke”.

Bailey is well-known for his work as a stand up comic and has also starred in a number of series including Black Books and Spaced.

The husband of Kirsty and dada of 12-year-old Dean, Bagpipe’s relationship has been in trouble since Kirsty gave birth to a mixed-heritage baby after having an affair.

“He’s a bit naive, a bit gullible, a bit of a buffoon, but essentially he’s a good sort,” Bailey says.

On why his character is called Bagpipes, he explained: “Because of some terribly embarrassing incident that has never really been explained.

“It’s all a bit vague: he worked in a hardware store, something happened with a vacuum cleaner and nobody knows what. And he doesn’t want to talk about it.”

Eastenders actress Kellie Shirley plays Agnes’ friend and Bagpipes’ wife Kirsty.

Shirley is best known for her role as Carley Wicks on the BBC soap.

Kirsty is described as “friendly, fun-loving, and a hopeless romantic”.

Her affair a few years previous still affects her marriage to Bagpipes, who she loves dearly.

“She’s a breath of fresh air, she’s fun, she likes a drink, she’s a great friend, she tries to be a good mum – I think she’s a good mum – but she’s maybe not the best wife,” Shirley said.

Clarke replied: “Yeah. His name is John Boyega.”

The 25-year-old Brit is best known for playing Finn in Star Wars The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi and is currently 33/1 to be the next 007.

Nevertheless both Tom Hardy and James Norton are still the neck and neck favourites, with most bookmakers giving them odds of 3/1.

Daniel Craig will return for his fifth and final James Bond film in November 2019.

Yardie is a new crime thriller that marks Idris Elba’s directorial debut. It recently played at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, and now it’s poised to hit theaters this year. The first Yardie trailer has just debuted to give us a taste of what we can expect from Idris Elba as a filmmaker.

It’s only a brief tease of the film, but it looks like an intense thriller. However, if the reviews out of Sundance are to be believed, this might not be a great debut for Idris Elba as a director. A review at IndieWire says

“This flat and formulaic crime yarn has all sorts of flaws — woefully under-developed characters, a stilted pace, dull bursts of violence, and so on — but all of those problems pale in comparison to the fact that roughly 40% of the movie is unintelligible.”

Apparently, one of the big problems with this movie is that the thick Jamaican accents make the dialogue hard to understand. Even when the movie moves to the United Kingdom for the last act, this issue doesn’t go away.

But that might have been an isolated issue, because a review at Variety notes that the presence of these accents adds some flair, but don’t elevate the movie at all. While the movie is “strewn with Jamaica’s vibrant patois, palette and reggae-ruled playlist, spiking its portrait of warring underworld expats in London’s East End with some necessary spiced rum” this doesn’t do anything to help the story “which is somewhat hampered by thin characterization and cluttered plotting.”

Here’s the official synopsis for Yardie:

Set in ’70s Kingston and ’80s Hackney, Yardie centres on the life of a young Jamaican man named D (Aml Ameen), who has never fully recovered from the murder, committed during his childhood, of his older brother Jerry Dread (Everaldo Creary). D grows up under the wing of a Kingston Don and music producer named King Fox (Sheldon Shepherd). Fox dispatches him to London, where he reconnects with his childhood sweetheart, Yvonne (Shantol Jackson), and his daughter who he’s not seen since she was a baby. He also hooks up with a soundclash crew, called High Noon. But before he can be convinced to abandon his life of crime and follow “the righteous path”, he encounters the man who shot his brother 10 years earlier, and embarks on a bloody, explosive quest for retribution – a quest which brings him into conflict with vicious London gangster Rico (Stephen Graham).

Yardie hits theaters sometime this year, but no specific release date has been announced.
