Cultural appropriation and an identity crisis take center stage in Tuesday’s Season 2 premiere of mixed-ish. Johan was called a “really bad name” at school which, according to Rainbow, is so horrible, it doesn’t bear repeating. Paul and Alicia assume it’s that word and immediately try to comfort their son until they realize they’re dealing with an entirely different racial slur: beaner.

Some of the kids at school think Johan is Mexican, and he hasn’t corrected them. For Johan, it was easier not to say anything to his friends, since they assumed he wasn’t Black. Rainbow is upset that he’s been lying about his identity, while Santamonica is perfectly fine with it because she pretends to be different people all the time.

Johan’s revelation brings up an important issue: Did Paul and Alicia’s colorblind parenting while on the commune make him ashamed of his heritage? In an attempt to encourage their kids to be proud of their Blackness, Paul and Alicia gather the family to watch The Color Purple (but definitely not because someone else had already rented Roots). The plan backfires, however, and the kids have some troubling takeaways: Johan thinks the film says the world hates Black people, while Santamonica wonders if the lesson is that kids can be easily taken from their moms.

Another issue arises when Johan reveals that he was called the racial slur by another Black kid. Confused as to why another Black kid wouldn’t know their son is Black, Alicia realizes her experience is different from her kids, who are mixed.

At the end of the episode, Rainbow confronts her brother for lying about his identity and accuses him of being ashamed of his Blackness. Johan explains that he’s not ashamed but tired of the constant questions about his heritage. Rainbow also deals with those annoying questions but doesn’t let them get to her.

“It’s not my job to make other people feel comfortable and it’s not your job either,” she tells Johan. “And if anyone has a problem with that, I will always have your back.”

Johan hears her loud and clear, putting this week’s issue to bed.

The Masked Singer: Dragon’s identity ‘exposed’ in Instagram slip-up? https://briefnews.eu/the-masked-singer-dragons-identity-exposed-in-instagram-slip-up/ https://briefnews.eu/the-masked-singer-dragons-identity-exposed-in-instagram-slip-up/#respond Sun, 24 Jan 2021 16:31:21 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-masked-singer-dragons-identity-exposed-in-instagram-slip-up/

Eight celebrities remain in the race to keep their identity hidden on The Masked Singer. Badger, Robin, Sausage, Blob, Bush Baby, Harlequin, Viking and Dragon performed for judges Rita Ora, Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross and Mo Gilligan. Those watching at home hoped the extra clues will help them identify who is behind the costumes. But there is one act viewers are still incredibly confused about: Dragon.

Dragon has proved themselves to be one of the trickier contestants on this year’s edition of The Masked Singer on ITV.

The clues they have been giving out have left fans and judges mostly in disagreement up until this point.

Some of the names that have cropped up so far are those of Susan Calman and Michelle Visage.

However it seems that Dragon has been unmasked on Instagram as Courtney Act.

The Drag Race star was tagged on Instagram in a post by the manufacturer of the fabric for the Dragon costume, revealing that it’s her hiding under the mask.

The account for Funki Fabrics posted a picture of the Masked Singer character on their profile, saying how the costume uses their textured mermaid scale fabric, and in it they tagged Courtney’s account.

Some fans seem to believe that this was no accident, and the manufacturers have insight on who is performing under the costume they helped make.

Performing the song live on stage with fellow Drag Race pal Adore Delano, the drag performer – real name Shane Jenek – sounded identical to Dragon’s debut, said many fans.

Courtney is known for her singing talents, famously appearing on the first season of Australian Idol in 2003.

The rainbow belly on the Dragon costume could also be a nod to the LGBTQ+ community and therefore be a further clue leading to Courtney.

Many fans though would disagree, placing their bets for Dragon on other celebrities.

Michelle recently appeared on Lorraine and teased fans about it being her masquerading behind the Dragon. “Wait and see” she told fans.

Susan was also forced to address the rumours that she might be hiding under the mask while on Lorraine.

“This is the most flattering rumour I think that’s ever been spread,” she said.

“I’m not,” she denied. “But my goodness thank you for thinking I was.”

The Masked Singer continues on ITV on Saturday at 7pm.

“I don’t know about the blob but I am sure the harlequin is Gabrielle x,” echoed a third, with a fourth in agreement: “Yep, and Harlequin is Gabrielle me thinks. Not sure about the others.”

While a fifth added to the conversation: “It’s so Gabrielle as Harlequin. #MaskedSingerUK.”

However, while Gabrielle seems to be one of the most popular guesses among the fandom, she isn’t the only star tipped to be hiding under Harlequin’s disguise.

The Masked Singer: Swan’s identity ‘exposed’ as Meghan Markle after huge royal clue https://briefnews.eu/the-masked-singer-swans-identity-exposed-as-meghan-markle-after-huge-royal-clue/ https://briefnews.eu/the-masked-singer-swans-identity-exposed-as-meghan-markle-after-huge-royal-clue/#respond Sun, 27 Dec 2020 09:48:23 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-masked-singer-swans-identity-exposed-as-meghan-markle-after-huge-royal-clue/

ITV viewers were delighted to see The Masked Singer return for a second series last night as they were ready and waiting to put their detective hats back on once more. With clues soon given to viewers surrounding the identity of the performers, fans soon took to social media to share their guesses. Swan was one of the most intriguing prospects amongst the new cohort, with some, including Jonathan Ross, left convinced Meghan Markle could be behind the mask – here’s why.

The competition quickly got into full swing with a host of impressive performances from the new batch of stars.

Last night, half of the contestants took to the stage for the first time in three separate battles before one of the bottom three was eliminated.

It was Alien who became the first to wave goodbye to the show last night before being unveiled as pop legend Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

Many fans had correctly guessed the singer after spotting her distinctive vocals, which weren’t completely covered – despite her best efforts.

Another person who fans quickly got onboard try to guess the identity of was Swan, who teased royal links early on.

Swan performed a dazzling rendition of ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’ by Shania Twain.

Although she ended up in the bottom three, she was saved by the panel and put through to another week of the competition.

Of course, it didn’t take long for fans to start speculating who might be hiding underneath the costume.

“America. Independence. Royal. The BLACK SWAN. It’s Meghan Markle, calling it now #TheMaskedSingerUK #TheMaskedSinger,” wrote a fourth.

“Why was my first guess for the swan Meghan Markle- American, loyal and royal lmaooo #MaskedSinger,” said another.

And they weren’t the only ones, as panellist Jonathan Ross also placed his bets on it being the well-known member of the Royal Family.

Other names swirling around included former Strictly Come Dancing judge and ballet legend Darcey Bussell as well as Pussycat Dolls star Ashley Roberts.

Many fans believed the dance floor connection hinted they had been involved in the hit BBC contest.

Other clues included having “the freedom to spread their wings” as well as being loyal, strong and independent.

Drag Race judge Michelle Visage and another Pussycat Dolls face, Kimberley Wyatt, were also speculated by fans.

But who will be the person unveiled as Swan in the weeks to come?

The Masked Singer airs Saturdays on ITV.

Line of Duty season 6: H’s identity ‘confirmed’ as DCI Ian Buckells – Here’s the evidence https://briefnews.eu/line-of-duty-season-6-hs-identity-confirmed-as-dci-ian-buckells-heres-the-evidence/ https://briefnews.eu/line-of-duty-season-6-hs-identity-confirmed-as-dci-ian-buckells-heres-the-evidence/#respond Mon, 28 Sep 2020 02:10:19 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/line-of-duty-season-6-hs-identity-confirmed-as-dci-ian-buckells-heres-the-evidence/

Line of Duty fans have long been wondering who the final member of the Organised Crime Gang H is. Currently, DI Matthew Cotton (played by Craig Parkinson), Chief Superintendent Derek Hilton (Paul Higgins) and lawyer Gill Biggeloe (Polly Walker) have all been confirmed as having a role in the gritty underworld as the first three members. While there have been many characters who seem up to the task of having a criminal alter-ego, all evidence points to Detective Chief Inspector Ian Buckells (Nigel Boyle) who’s next in the firing line.

Series five’s big twist revealed H is not just one person, so we all backtracked over the past five seasons to try and identify who had enough screen-time to be named as the last mystery villain.

Now, in a video essay exploring just that, YouTube user Clem put his in-depth fan knowledge to the test to unravel how Buckells is one to watch.

After all, actor Nigel previously said of his character: “There’s more to Buckells than meets the eye!”

Clem began by revealing the neccessary characteristics of H: “Undercover cop John Corbett (Stephen Graham) was certain H was a senior police officer.

“If he’s correct, we must be looking for someone of inspector rank and has been for some time.”

First appearing in season one, Buckells is appointed Senior Investigating Officer on the Jackie Laverty case, taking over from DCI Tony Gate (Lenny James).

He’s next seen in series four, again appointed as SIO after DCI Roz Huntley (Thandi Newton) is removed from Operation Trapdoor on the recommendation of AC-12.

But Clem points out – who appointed him? Hilton, of course.

At the end of series five, Hilton was found dead at a significant spot a number of other characters met their grisly demise, in a murder that was staged to look like a suicide.

Out of the three members caught, Hilton was the only one to be killed – begging the question: Did he know the real identity of the last member?

Clem doesn’t believe that Dot or Gill actually knew who their other colleague was, otherwise The Caddy would have given up their name in his dying declaration and Gill would have sung like a canary now she’s co-operating with AC-12 after going into witness protection.

“Hilton was already trying to lead cases away from the OCG. He put himself in charge of the Greek Lane murders case, pushing the idea that it was connected to terrorists instead of drug dealers and Buckells does the same,” Clem suggested, before explaining his dodgy actions.

It’s sounding pretty convincing so far…

“In operation Trapdoor, he directed suspicion onto Tim Ifield (Jason Watkins) and Hannah Reznikova (Gaite Jansen) putting the search for balaclava man on the back-burner.

“Buckells used the same methods as Hilton, a known member of H to stop Organised Crime being linked to both of these cases.”

He continued: “Buckells was also the one who permitted Dot to speak to Tommy Hunter (Brian McCardle) following his arrest.

“Ian was also interested in Dot taking the inspectors exam, which would see him too, become a senior police officer and Dot went on to become one of the four members of H.”

There was also that bizarre moment Buckells legged it into the interview room once he realised Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) was interviewing Ryan Pilkington (Gregory Piper), and then proceeded to speak to him afterwards, in dialect we don’t get to hear.

Fans of the BBC show applauded Clem for his in-dept cnalaysis and putting two and two together, woith one saying: “Great great points, Buckells definitely fits the MO for the classic whodunnit perp as someone always present but in the background enough to not draw suspicion to the audience.

Adventure Time: Distant Lands EP Tackles Our Burning ‘BMO’ Questions, Including the Identity of ‘Mr. M’ https://briefnews.eu/adventure-time-distant-lands-ep-tackles-our-burning-bmo-questions-including-the-identity-of-mr-m/ https://briefnews.eu/adventure-time-distant-lands-ep-tackles-our-burning-bmo-questions-including-the-identity-of-mr-m/#respond Sun, 19 Jul 2020 22:07:53 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/adventure-time-distant-lands-ep-tackles-our-burning-bmo-questions-including-the-identity-of-mr-m/

RELATED STORIES

Like one of the Ooo’s fateful Catalyst Comets, the first Adventure Time: Distant Lands special landed on HBO Max last month (click here to read our recap!), affording us 45 more minutes of quality time with everyone’s favorite talking video game console.

As is the case with most Adventure Time offerings, however, “BMO” raised just as many questions as it answered. Fortunately, TVLine was able to get executive producer Adam Muto on the line to shed some light on the situation. Read on for our full Q&A:

TVLINE | The last time we talked was for the Adventure Time series finale. When you were putting that together, did you know Distant Lands would be happening, or did you really think the finale was the last we’d see any of these characters?
At the time, there wasn’t particularly a need to have more. But having had some success with the [Stakes, Islands and Elements] miniseries, we sort of pitched that as a way to extend it without just doing more episodes. It was a way we could keep it special and focus on other characters. At the time, they were into the idea, but there wasn’t a place for it, so we just put it on the shelf.

TVLINE | With only four episodes in Distant Lands, how did you decide which four characters — or pairs of characters — you were going to focus on?
That’s been one of the tougher parts, figuring out who to focus on, and how obscure is too obscure. There are a lot of characters who could do one-off episodes, but when it came to making this an hour-long thing, it felt like some of those might be too thin. BMO has been a pretty well-liked character from the beginning. The further on we go, that’s where it starts to get harder. At some point, it just starts being the show again, and we don’t want to encroach on what we did with the series. The real estate does feel more precious, so it would have been hard not to do something substantial with Princess Bubblegum and Marceline, and even Finn and Jake. If they didn’t show up at all, it would feel like we weren’t totally connecting it to the main story.

TVLINE | The one about Peppermint Butler going to wizard school sounds like the pilot of a show I know I would watch.
[Laughs] Yeah, that’s also something we realized while we were working on these. We had to build these worlds that felt like Adventure Time but also had to feel interesting enough on their own. We’re basically making four pilots for four different shows that we know will only go for one episode each. That’s a lot of work.

Adventure Time Distant LandsTVLINE | Realizing at the end of “BMO” that the whole thing took place before Adventure Time blew my mind. Did you know from Day 1 that you wanted to make “BMO” a prequel episode?
I don’t know if it was Day 1, but it did come to mind pretty early. We weren’t sure if it would find a space in the very end, like if it would still make sense by the time we broke the story and wrote the outlines. But that was one thing that managed to stay in. We wanted it to seem like this story could take place at any time; there’s not a lot of context at the beginning. We already established that BMO survived past the end of the series, so we were hoping that the fans’ natural assumption would be that this was set even further in the future. We didn’t want [that surprise ending] to feel like too much of a gimmick. You weren’t seeing [Finn and Jake] just to see them. It was the idea that BMO lived this long life before he met them, he just never talked about it.

TVLINE | I have to ask about a few fan theories, too. “Mr. M” has to be Martin, Finn’s dad, right?
[Laughs] It could be! I’ll probably leave it at that.

TVLINE | BMO is already on a mission when this starts. What is that mission? Do you have BMO’s entire backstory mapped out in your head?
Because he’s a pretty long-lived character, we don’t have his entire thousands of years of existence locked down. I think there’s a lot of room there to imagine. And there’s potential to explore it. But for the purposes of this episode, his mission is just to go to Mars and become a potato farmer. You have to take him at his word. That’s what he was told to do. Why was he told to do that? That’s something that’s still up for discussion.

TVLINE | Lastly, the BMO we see in the closing credits — Is he really in space in real life?
Yeah! I think it’s called the Astro BMO. That was built by Bob Herzberg, and he’s built BMOs before. Some of them have been featured in Cartoon Network things. He got connected with this program called the Quest Institute and they had a module that was going up in space … so he built a custom BMO that fit inside the module. I think it might be up there right now.

Dark season 3 explained: Who is Hanno in Dark? Identity in family tree revealed https://briefnews.eu/dark-season-3-explained-who-is-hanno-in-dark-identity-in-family-tree-revealed/ https://briefnews.eu/dark-season-3-explained-who-is-hanno-in-dark-identity-in-family-tree-revealed/#respond Sun, 05 Jul 2020 06:02:32 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/dark-season-3-explained-who-is-hanno-in-dark-identity-in-family-tree-revealed/

Hanno was re-named Noah by Adam but his reasons for doing so remained a mystery.

Going by the biblical theme, Noah later likened his crude time machine to an ark as he sought to save humanity.

He believed Adam was on the side of good and followed him blindly without realising they were all locked in an infinite cycle.

Unfortunately, he was left disillusioned and tried to take revenge on Adam after learning his daughter was Charlotte Doppler (Karoline Eichhorn) – the mother of his wife Elisabeth (Sandra Borgmann).

Ultimately, Noah/Hanno was simply a pawn in the cycle and died hoping he could change the future.

Power Book 5: Will Ghost team up with Tommy under new identity? https://briefnews.eu/power-book-5-will-ghost-team-up-with-tommy-under-new-identity/ https://briefnews.eu/power-book-5-will-ghost-team-up-with-tommy-under-new-identity/#respond Sat, 29 Feb 2020 08:19:23 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/power-book-5-will-ghost-team-up-with-tommy-under-new-identity/

“But it of course, it’s intrinsically different because he’s at a different place.

“So I would love to see this slow down a little bit and then boom light up.

“Because that’s Tommy zero to 60 and really get the thoughts and emotions that have made him the person that we know that he is.”

Although his words seem to refer to a prequel which would see how Tommy became the man fans are familiar with in Power, it would be interesting to see where the character could go without Ghost.

Tommy has been somewhat shambolic but perhaps he’s learnt lessons from his time with Ghost, which could equip him for his new enterprises on the East Coast.

With Ghost by his side under a new identity, the pair could again be unstoppable.

The Masked Singer on FOX: Elephant’s identity revealed as Black Eyed Peas singer? https://briefnews.eu/the-masked-singer-on-fox-elephants-identity-revealed-as-black-eyed-peas-singer/ https://briefnews.eu/the-masked-singer-on-fox-elephants-identity-revealed-as-black-eyed-peas-singer/#respond Wed, 12 Feb 2020 00:36:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-masked-singer-on-fox-elephants-identity-revealed-as-black-eyed-peas-singer/

The publication suggests the outfit isn’t too dissimilar from one typically found in a Black Eyed Peas music video.

The biggest hint connecting the disguise to the pop band, however, comes from their debut album title.

The Black Eyed Peas released their debut album Elephunk back in 2003, which consisted of hit singles such as Where is the Love? and Let’s Get it Started.

Could this be enough to expose Elephant’s identity before they’ve even taken to the stage?

Queen Bee: The Masked Singer star’s identity exposed as Jade Thirlwall after ‘slip-up’? https://briefnews.eu/queen-bee-the-masked-singer-stars-identity-exposed-as-jade-thirlwall-after-slip-up/ https://briefnews.eu/queen-bee-the-masked-singer-stars-identity-exposed-as-jade-thirlwall-after-slip-up/#respond Sun, 09 Feb 2020 08:58:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/queen-bee-the-masked-singer-stars-identity-exposed-as-jade-thirlwall-after-slip-up/

The Masked Singer fans were sent into overdrive last weekend when Queen Bee took to the stage once more and performed. After wowing the judges and studio audience she made it through to week seven and tonight, ahead of the semi-final, it seems a ‘slip-up’ made by the celebrity underneath the mask has revealed her identity.

Tonight, five famous faces, hidden underneath elaborate costumes will showcase their singing talent in from of Ken Jeong, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross, who are then tasked with trying to uncover their identities.

Speculation has been rife as to who is Queen Bee, with Girls Aloud band member Nicola Roberts a firm favourite.

But it seems, the clues are pointing towards Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwalll, especially after a ‘slip-up’ was made during her performance last weekend.

Taking a look back at the very first clues which were dropped by the ITV competition, before singing Sia’s Alive, Queen Bee said she was a “wild card” and “rule breaker” and was “quite young” when her career began, but now they’ve “grown up”. “I’m no longer a princess,” she said. “I’m a queen.

Queen Bee also revealed: “Out of all of my friends, I am the joker of the pack.”

Her second song choice was Lewis Capaldi’s Someone You Love, and she revealed how she was a “lawmaker” with a background in activism.

““People might think I’m shy but I’m not afraid to stand up and fight for what I believe in,” she said.

“I’ve always done that and it makes me proud to say sometimes I’ve made a real change.”

“Am I a law breaker? No, I’m a law maker. I’m a benevolent Queen and bees only sting when they have to. But don’t let that fool you, this bee can sting,” viewers were told.

The two truths and one line were: I’m under 30, I’m well known in the fashion circles, I’m not known for singing onstage.

Well the first two are relatable to Jade Thirwall, while the latter could be the lie.

In week four of the show, Queen Bee returned to the stage and said she had “won a contest” which “launched her career,” this could easily be suggesting the X Factor.

“I was so young I felt like I was being swept along with the tide and I’d been thrown in at the deep end,” her VT explained.

But it was the following clue which suggested she was part of the Little Mix band: “With tonight’s song I’m going to enjoy every moment – these wings were made to fly,” in reference to one of their number one hits.

Week five saw Queen Bee explain how having a “public image can be difficult” as “everyone has an opinion and it’s not always complimentary”.

She shared: “I do silly things to try and change my appearance. Now I’m smarter and wiser, I can laugh it off.”

But it was the last remark which fans think sealed her identity, Queen Bee said the words “woman like me” which is another Little Mix song.

Many took to Twitter to discuss the possible identities, one said: “I’m started thinking that Queenbee under the mask is Jade/ Leigh-Anne from Little Mix. The last episode of masked singer gave us a huge clues. Also we got to know she’s young pop star and in this video queenbee says ”woman like me now has the power”. @LittleMix #TheMaskedSingeruk”

“The Queen Bee is someone from Little Mix. “A woman like Me” and “These wings are made to fly.” Hearing Little Mix live, I think it sounds like Jesy or Jade. Jades voice is more likely. #TheMaskedSinger,” another remarked.

However, others were not so convinced: “I bet my life and mixer title that Queen Bee is not Jade Thirlwall, if I am wrong I can no longer call myself a fan. I am sure The Masked Singer UK is using clues that make it seem like it’s related to little mix but it’s not. I think it’s Charlotte Church #themaskedsingeruk.”

“It infuriates me that people think (and argue their case) that Queen Bee from #TheMaskedSinger is Jade from Little Mix …. It is ONE MILLION PERCENT Nicola Roberts,” one added.

Tonight, the remaining five contestants will be slashed to three for the grand finale.

The Masked Singer airs tonight on ITV at 7.30pm.
