The scent-baited trap called an M-44 doused Canyon Mansfield, then 14, and his three-year-old Labrador Casey, with cyanide in March last year, as the boy was “playing and throwing a toy for his dog” near the family home east of Pocatello, Idaho, according to the lawsuit. The boy said he mistook the highly toxic device for an ordinary sprinkler, since they effectively look the same. When the boy pulled on the pipe, “it exploded with a loud bang,” the court papers state.
The anti-coyote trap was filled with cyanide, which sprayed into the boy’s left eye and covered his clothes. As he attempted to wash away the orange-colored powder with snow, he saw his dog foaming at the mouth. Canyon immediately rushed to his parents for help, but by the time he and his mother returned, the dog had already stopped breathing.
The tragic incident not only claimed the life of the family’s beloved pet, but also allegedly resulted in a deterioration of Canyon’s health. He continues to suffer from occasional headaches. It was revealed that local law enforcement, including the sheriff, were also unaware of the traps and did not know how to spot them.
The incident sparked a huge outcry at the time, with a number of wildlife conservation groups calling on the government to cease using M-44s.
A month after the incident, the Department of Agriculture said it had removed all such devices in Idaho and would refrain from setting them for an indefinite time. The authorities also vowed to give at least 30-days prior notice before it places any new traps of that kind in the area.
Although the Wildlife Services apologized for what they called “the unintentional lethal take of a dog,” questions remain about why the device was planted in the first place. According to the department’s published guidelines, it does not use M-44s on any property “unless requested by the land’s owner or manager.” In addition, if such a device is placed, it should be accompanied with a bilingual warning.
The M-44 that allegedly injured the boy was placed on land belonging to the Federal Bureau of Land Management in February by mistake, its spokesman confirmed at the time. The incident came just months after the department said it would cease using the traps on federally owned land in the state “to reduce health risks to people and domestic animals,” AFP reported.

Well this isn’t good. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the federal agency tasked with administering the nation’s supply of fissile materials, announced on Friday that Idaho State University may be subject to fine for losing a gram of weapons-grade plutonium. While the quarter-sized chunk of radioactive rock isn’t nearly enough to generate a mushroom-cloud, it is sufficient for use in a so-called “dirty bomb,” according to agency spokesman Victor Dricks. And to show that the NRC isn’t fooling around, that fine will run ISU a tidy $ 8,500. Wait, that’s it?
A February 7th inspection revealed a pair of violations, “the failure to control and maintain surveillance of licensed radioactive material; and the failure to provide accurate and complete information to the NRC in its inventory records,” per the NRC announcement. The $ 8,500 levy comes in response to the first infraction only, since the university ” took prompt corrective actions after the violations were identified.” The missing sample, however, has yet to be recovered.
“The NRC has very rigorous controls for the use and storage of radioactive materials as evidenced by this enforcement action,” Dr. Cornelis Van der Schyf, vice president for research at the university, told the Associated Press. He blamed shoddy bookkeeping from a decade and a half ago as the primary culprit.
“Unfortunately, because there was a lack of sufficient historical records to demonstrate the disposal pathway employed in 2003, the source in question had to be listed as missing,” he told the AP. “The radioactive source in question poses no direct health issue or risk to public safety.” Well, that’s a relief.

A TV station has apologized to a well-known Black Lives Matter activist after mistakenly attaching his photograph to a local story about a bank robbery.
Tweets posted to CBS-affiliate KBOI in Idaho showed police restraining DeRay Mckesson, an activist and former Baltimore mayoral candidate, underneath the headline: “Would-be robber arrives early at banks to find doors locked.”
The image had been taken during a July 2016 protest in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Mckesson later shared the tweet along with the caption: “I haven’t been anywhere near a bank robbery. FYI.”
KBOI then deleted the original tweet and posted an apology to its Twitter feed.
“We messed up,” the tweet read. “We mistakenly tweeted a photo of @deray with an unrelated story link about a bank robbery. We at KBOI are very sorry.”

— KBOI 2News (@KBOITV) July 15, 2017
American Civil Liberties Union executive Kristen Clarke also weighed in on the controversy, pointing out that the suspect in the robbery case was not African-American.
Asked for his reaction, Mckesson told Raw Story: “I’m confused as to how the image of my arrest in Baton Rouge was affixed to a story about a bank robbery in Idaho, especially given that the suspect wasn’t even black.”
Furious commenters noted that the picture was also used for another story carrying the headline: “Officer wounded in deadly ambush sues Black Lives Matter.”
Some have even pointed to ties between the Sinclair Broadcasting Group – the owners of KBOI – and US President Donald Trump, a critic of the Black Lives Matter movement, as reason for the tweets.
Assumes it was an accident. Deray has nothing to do with any of KBOI’s headlines today, yet his picture was used in a disparaging way twice!

An local CBS news affiliate in Idaho has issued a public apology to Black Lives Matter activist and educator DeRay McKesson after the station used a photo of McKesson in an unrelated story about a bank robbery.
Screenshots of tweets that the news station KBOI sent on Friday night showed an image of McKesson underneath the headline, “Would-be robber arrives early at banks to find doors locked.”
The accompanying image of McKesson, an activist and former Baltimore mayoral candidate, was taken during a July 2016 protest in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
McKesson shared the erroneous tweet with the caption: “I haven’t been anywhere near a bank robbery. FYI.”

KBOI later apologized in a tweet: “We messed up. We mistakenly tweeted a photo of @deray with an unrelated story link about a bank robbery. We at KBOI are very sorry.”
Another story on the station’s website showed a different picture of McKesson at the same Baton Rouge rally with the headline, “Officer wounded in deadly ambush sues Black Lives Matter.” The photo was later changed.
McKesson supporters lashed out at the station for the error.
The Washington Post used a similar image of McKesson for its reporting on that story in which it said an unidentified policeman accused Black Lives Matter leaders, McKesson, Johnnetta Elzie, and three other people of “inciting and encouraging violence” at its demonstrations.
The officer pointed to a July 2016 shooting in Baton Rouge in which US Marine sergeant Gavin Long opened fire on police officers, killing three and injuring three others. The unidentified policeman was reportedly left disabled after being shot multiple times in the ambush.
McKesson filed a class-action lawsuit against Baton Rouge in August, alleging excessive use of force by police at the protest where he and more than 100 others were arrested.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A massive Idaho tree that grew over more than a century from a seedling sent by a noted naturalist has been uprooted and is poised to travel about two blocks Sunday to a new location.
David Cox of tree-moving company Environmental Design said Saturday the 10-story sequoia is doing well, and everything is in place for the 800,000-pound (362,877-kilogram) landmark to start moving on inflatable rollers shortly after midnight.
Sequoias aren’t native to Idaho, and the tree is believed to be the state’s largest sequoia. St. Luke’s Health System in Boise is paying $ 300,000 to move it to make room for an expansion.
Cox says if everything goes as planned, the sequoia will be at its new home on city property around noon Sunday.
The tree was sent to Boise as a seedling by naturalist John Muir, who played a key role in establishing California’s Sequoia National Park.

HAILEY, Idaho (AP) — A judge has blocked actor Bruce Willis’ plan to build a private airstrip in central Idaho.
The Idaho Mountain Express (http://bit.ly/2r6T4Gr ) reports that 5th District Judge Robert Elgee ruled that Camas County commissioners violated state law when drafting an ordinance allowing individuals to obtain conditional-use permits to build a private airport in agricultural-zoned county lands.
Willis began construction on an 8,500-foot dirt runway last year. However, the project was halted in September after Planning and Zoning Administrator Dwight Butlin discovered that the airport site was on land zoned for agricultural use.
Work was allowed to resume when the county tweaked the ordinance, which sparked a lawsuit filed by Camas County residents.
Elgee said in his May 19 ruling that Camas County showed a “complete disregard” for property rights and the well-being of the neighborhood.
Camas County Attorney Matt Pember said the county was disappointed with the judge’s decision.

The device, called an M-44, is spring-loaded to discharge poisonous sodium cyanide powder if it is pulled on. The US Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services uses the scent-baited booby-traps to kill predator animals like coyotes, foxes, wolves, and cougars that can pose a risk to homes, livestock, and hiking trails.
However, in Thursday’s incident, which occurred near Buck Skin Road east of Pocatello, Idaho, an M-44 sprayed Canyon Mansfield, 14, and his three-year-old yellow Lab, Casey, as the two were walking on a hill near the family home.
“I see this little pipe that looked like a sprinkler sticking out of the ground,” Canyon told EastIdahoNews.com. “I go over and touch it. Then it makes a pop sound and it spews orange gas everywhere.”
The powder got into the teen’s left eye and onto his clothing, he said. He only realized his dog was hurt after washing his eye out with snow.
“I look over and see him having a seizure,” Canyon said, adding “I ran over and he had these glassy eyes. He couldn’t see me, and he had this red stuff coming out of his mouth.”
The boy called for help, and his father Mark, a medical doctor, tried to resuscitate Casey, but failed.
It took hours before the cause of the dog’s death could be linked to the Department of Agriculture’s predator-control program.
“We didn’t know anything about it. No neighborhood notifications, and our local authorities didn’t know anything about them,” Mark said. “The sheriff’s deputies who went up there didn’t even know what a cyanide bomb was,” he noted.
Canyon was taken to hospital for treatment, and the family and Bannock County sheriff’s deputies that had responded to the incident had their blood tested for possible cyanide poisoning.
The Wildlife Services said on Friday that the incident near Pocatello was the first “unintentional lethal take of a dog” by an M-44 in Idaho since 2014.
“Wildlife Services understands the close bonds between people and their pets and sincerely regrets such losses,” R. Andre Bell, a spokesman for the US Department of Agriculture, said in a statement. “Wildlife Services has removed M-44s in that immediate area. Wildlife Services is completing a thorough review of the circumstances of this incident, and will work to review our operating procedures to determine whether improvements can be made to reduce the likelihood of similar occurrences happening in the future,” it continues.
The statement added that M-44s are only planted at the request of property owners, claiming the service “posts signs and issues other warnings to alert pet owners when wildlife traps or other devices are being used in an area for wildlife damage management.”
“The USDA’s statement regarding the horrific incident that happened to my family yesterday is both disrespectful and inaccurate,” said Canyon’s sister, Madison Mansfield. “The USDA intentionally refers to the brutal killing of our dog as a ‘take’ to render his death trivial and insignificant,” she stressed.
“They also claim that the killing of an unintended victim is a rare occurrence, but this is entirely untrue. In fact, this issue is nationally recognized due to the lack of selectivity of cyanide bombs, and there have been many reported incidents in which unintended animals and people have been targeted,” she told the Idaho State Journal.
Bannock County Sheriff Lorin Nielsen said no notice had been given to local authorities about the placement of M-44s in the area.
“I’ve been a sheriff here for 20 years and worked for the office for 39 years, and I’ve never heard of leaving around a device that emits poisonous gas,” he said, as cited by Reuters, adding that he would be meeting the federal authorities next week to “get to the bottom of it.”
“After Iceland, Idaho has the second most natural hot springs per square mile,” my guide Devin Hawkins tells me as we zip up our thermal suits at snowmobile operator Cheap Thrills. We’re bound for Burgdorf Hot Springs along a groomed, snow-covered road that will take us some 20 miles alongside a frozen creek bed. While I am enjoying the views, I’m also prepping for destination disappointment: Most of my previous hot spring experiences have been a letdown of either too muddied or lukewarm waters. And they’re often stinky.

Rising from a scenic mountainside backed by lodgepole pines, Burgdorf Hot Springs is a collection of rustic wood cabins fronting a large pool of crystal clear water. At the far end sits two “lobster pots,” originally built by miners in the late 1800s who used the springs to rinse off grime and soothe sore muscles. Some timbers still bear the chisel marks of their original axing. It’s easy to imagine you’ve stepped back to frontier times.
I last roughly two minutes and emerge as pink as a crustacean, my entire body tingling.
Here the water rushes out of the springheads at 130 gallons per minute — at 108 and 111 degrees — and flows straight into the lobster pots. No bromine or chlorine is added, confirms staffer Karen Decker, since the entire system flushes itself out twice every 24 hours, and natural pebbles line the bottom of the pools. I last roughly two minutes and emerge as pink as a crustacean, my entire body tingling.
At the far end of the larger pool, the surface air cools the water temps to the upper 90s. The sweet spot is right between the two, where the lobster pots pipe into the larger pool, and I sidle up there like a manatee at a power plant. There’s little to no sulfur odor. I float on a pool noodle while soaking in the scenery and letting the spring’s natural lithium (among other therapeutic minerals) work their soothing effects. Devin brings me a plastic cup of red wine and a snowflake melts on my nose. I decide I’m never leaving.

The hot springs are open most of the year and can get crowded during the summer months. The best time to go is winter and early spring, when Burgdorf is cut off entirely from car traffic. The extra effort it takes to get here means you’ll often be soaking all by yourself, particularly if you visit midweek. A dip in the three pools costs $ 8 per day (free if you’re staying the night in the cabins, which cost $ 40 per person per night, plus firewood), and it’s a few bucks more to rent a bathing suit if you’ve forgotten your own — and trust me, this is one occasion where renting a bathing suit is worth it.
Sure, there’s no indoor plumbing or heated floors in the outhouse, but there’s also no poured concrete in sight. What is in sight: Towering pines bending under the snow and all that soothing steam. Later, when I post a photo on Instagram of the pools surrounded by snow, a hot spring–loving friend says he nearly humped his phone at the view. Completely appropriate, I confirm.
