It could be lonely this Christmas for Emmanuel Macron and Theresa May, with the leaders of France and Britain going into the festive season facing two very different crises: Yellow Vests and Brexit pests.

France and Britain have been bitter rivals for centuries, and now it appears they’re attempting to outdo each other once again over who can create the biggest political mess, and the competition is fierce.

The French president is dealing with the consequences of angering the people, and the British prime minister is dealing with the consequences of listening to the people.

However, as ICYMI explores, despite the differences there is one similarity that brings the two crises together.

With every new twist surrounding the poisoning of the Skripals in Salisbury, an element of farce is not far behind. No sooner had Britain named its two suspects, the accused showed up claiming they were simply on a mini-break.

Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, who London accuses of being members of Russia’s GRU military intelligence told RT that, actually, they were just two friends who wanted to see Salisbury’s world famous cathedral, and its impressive spire. It’s fair to say their story faced a certain amount of ridicule.

So ICYMI looks at a post-modern mystery which gets more bizarre by the day.

This week the world was asking, does Sweden know something we don’t? The famously peaceful and egalitarian home of flat-pack furniture handed out a guide to fighting a war to all of its citizens.

Swedes were told to prepare for “total defense,” and that “resistance will never cease,” which is easy to say when an actual enemy doesn’t appear to exist, and your nation hasn’t fought a war in two centuries.

However, there may be a bigger issue facing Sweden, and any other country should they decide to fight a war.

ICYMI ponders whether millennials could even be persuaded to enter a conflict zone where WiFi is notoriously temperamental, and the work-life balance precarious at best.

It’s International Women’s Day – a time to celebrate our ladies for being the strong, smart, independent beings that they are. So what is the greatest gift that gals have given the world? We hit the streets of London to find out.

Windshield Wipers

American inventor Mary Anderson invented modern windshield wipers. On a trip to New York in 1902 she noticed a trolley car driver operating the vehicle in the ice with the front windows open so that he could see. This was clearly less than ideal, so she thought up a better way to deal with the problem. What a gamechanger, what a gal.

Contouring

Well, more makeup in general. As one lovely Londoner said, “makeup, contour, highlighter, eyelashes” – so basically we ladies make the world a more beautiful place. You can thank us later. Or now, we won’t complain.

Life

Yes, there’s no doubt that women are the beings capable of creating life. While we do need a bit of help from our male counterparts to start off, the womb was the only place to grow pretty much every baby every born.

It’s that time of year when all the glamour of Hollywood comes together to hand out awards for ever more obscure movies that hardly anyone in the real world actually watches. Just don’t mention H**vey Weins***n.

This year’s Oscars extravaganza happens in the shadow of the disgraced movie-mogul. Once regarded as the most powerful producer in Tinseltown, the king and queenmaker of the academy is now living in disgrace after being outed as, well, a prolific sex pest.

Ignoring Weinstein won’t be easy though, considering a statue of him entitled ‘Casting Couch’ has appeared on Hollywood Boulevard just ahead of the ceremony. Awkward.

There are other issues at hand, however, like no one really watching the ceremony anymore because they’ve either not seen the arthouse obscurities getting the awards, or they can’t stand the politics coming at them from the stage.

So #ICYMI has taken a look at what we can expect at the 2018 Academy Awards.

Today on In Case You Missed It: When this show was announced on Engadget two years ago, we promised to find you the offbeat tech and science news you might have missed while following the previous day’s big headlines. I’ve felt a great responsibility covering innovations from the likes of NASA and MIT, plus discovering promising cancer studies and environmental inventions aimed at saving us all. I’ve learned so much from writing this show for you. And let’s be real, it’s probably the best job in tech journalism since very few autonomous car inventions could go without a Russian dash cam montage and I’ve needed to (ahem) carefully review options before selecting the perfect moment.

With about 500 episodes under ICYMI’s belt, it’s time to move on. This is the last time you’ll see In Case You Missed It on Engadget’s front page and if I’m honest, it’s for the best. ICYMI has been a blast, but doing this show takes a lot of time that we could be using to make even more videos. Right now we’re most excited about the stripped down, informative daily show we plan to unveil next month. Stay tuned!

I’ll still be obsessing about new odd products and science achievements via Twitter, plus working on investigative projects for the new show I produce and host, The Future IRL. We launched it justtt before I went on extended medical leave, because #greattiming.

Today on In Case You Missed It: While we’re all focused on cars becoming autonomous and electric, automakers have also been making important advancements in safety. No where is that more apparent than in a collision between a 1998 Toyota Corolla and its 2015 counterpart conducted by New Zealand’s ANCAP. The safety advisory slammed the two vehicles into each other head first. It’s impressive to see the difference between 2015 model with its mostly intact cab and the car built in 1998 which is so mangled there’s a good chance the person behind the wheel would not have survived.

Meanwhile, while you usually associate search and rescue with people in yellow vests and dogs, researchers at UC San Diego have created a tiny robot that walks by inflating and deflating the bladders in its legs. By removing mechanical parts from the appendages, researchers believe it would be good for squeezing in and out of small spaces to help find survivors of a collapsed building.

Tomorrow the company plans to send the first Falcon 9 rocket that successfully landed on its floating barge back into orbit where it will deploy a telecommunications satellite. Be sure to bring some popcorn. It’s also time to get (milli)amped! The Juiced battery system uses wirelessly-charged 1500mAh power packs and a universal, tethered base station to charge up to 6 mobile devices at once. Squad goals!

Today on In Case You Missed It: Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are leveraging 20,000-core supercomputers to model the inner workings of supercells in hopes of finding out why some storms unleash tornadoes while others do not. In all, the simulation relied on nearly two billion individual data points.

We also take a look at a sure-handed robotic surgeon developed at the University of Bern in Switzerland that’s designed to drill tiny holes in your skull. See, in order to install a cochlear implant, doctors need to cut a small hole in your skull but the location is packed with facial and taste nerves. One wrong move and the operation can do more harm than good. But with this robo-surgeon on call, doctors can drill more deftly.
