On Monday, NBC Nightly News broadcast a report claiming that White House officials had discussed using an experimental weapon to disrupt or disable a North Korean missile launch. The weapon in question, the product of the US Air Force’s Counter-electronics High-powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP), uses bursts of microwave energy to disable electronic devices such as computers, communications and air defense radar systems.

Officials from Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) suggested CHAMP could be fully weaponized in a matter of weeks. But almost as a footnote, the NBC report noted that the weapon would have to pass very close to an ICBM before launch to affect it—which, despite CHAMP’s classification as a non-lethal weapon, might be considered an act of war.

The Air Force has conducted tests of CHAMP, a system designed to selectively beam high-energy microwaves to cause damage to electronic systems. AFRL, Raytheon, and Boeing’s Phantom Works development team tested the CHAMP concept aboard a Conventional Air Launched Cruise Missile (CALCM) in 2012 at a Utah test range. In the 2012 test, pulses from the CHAMP cruise missile disabled computers and even the video cameras monitoring them as the missile flew over them.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday that it had successfully tested one of its newest intercontinental ballistic missiles. 

The solid-fuel RS-24 YARS ICBM equipped with a nuclear warhead was fired from Plesetsk and reached the Kura range site in Kamchatka Krai, the ministry of defense said. 

“All … tasks have been fully accomplished,” the ministry of defense said.

The distance between the Plesetsk Cosmodrome and the Kura test range in Kamchatka Krai is more than 5,000 miles.

The launch was done in conjunction with the Zapad-2017 war game exercises, which Russia completed Wednesday, according to The National Interest.  

Russia also test fired a silo-based YARS ICBM with an “experimental warhead” on Sept. 12, according to TASS, while Wednesday’s launch was from a mobile unit. 

“It is not clear what these new “experimental” Russian reentry vehicles (RV) are,” The National Interest reported, adding that it’s possible that it was a maneuvarable reentry vehicle designed to allude missile defense systems. 

Despite Russia signing the New START Treaty with the US in 2010, which limited the number of nuclear warheads both countries could build, Moscow continues to increase its stockpile, according to Defense One. 

“The aggregate data shows that Russia has continued to increase its deployed strategic warheads since 2013 when it reached its lowest level of 1,400 warheads. Russian strategic launchers now carry 396 warheads more,” Hans M. Kristensen, of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists, wrote last year, according to Defense One. 

Here’s what the RS-24 YARS ICBM can do. 

Russia began developing the three-stage solid-propellant RS-24 YARS ICBM in 2004. It was first tested in 2007, and entered service in 2010.

It’s equipped with 3 MIRV nuclear warheads, each with a payload of 2,647 pounds. A MIRV (multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle) is a ballistic missile with multiple warheads, all capable of hitting different targets.

On May 30, the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and the United States Air Force successfully tested the Homeland Missile Defense System, shooting down an intercontinental ballistic missile in the first “live fire” test of the system’s Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) element. The GMD consists of a land-based, fire-control system and interceptor missiles designed to strike ICBMs in flight outside the atmosphere. The interceptor missile was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, and it destroyed an “ICBM-class target” launched from the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The ICBM was tracked by multiple radars, including the Sea-Based X-Band Radar, a giant radome mounted aboard a “semi-submersible” platform that resembles a giant self-propelled oil rig.

“The intercept of a complex, threat-representative ICBM target is an incredible accomplishment for the GMD system and a critical milestone for this program,” said MDA Director Vice Adm. Jim Syring in an official statement. “This system is vitally important to the defense of our homeland, and this test demonstrates that we have a capable, credible deterrent against a very real threat.”

“These weapons will soon appear in our armed forces,” Dmitry Rogozin told Rossiya-1 TV on Sunday. While not naming the new ICBM, the deputy PM in charge of the defense industry said the missile will have the capacity to penetrate any American air defenses.

“These weapons are able to clear the United States’ missile defense both of today and of tomorrow – and even of the day after tomorrow,” Rogozin said.

Rogozin also noted that the existing Russian nuclear deterrent forces, made up of various missiles including the Soviet-era R-36M2 Voevoda (SS-18 Satan) ICBMs, which he described as “very reliable,” will remain in use until the latest arsenal becomes operational.

While the weapon of the future wasn’t named, media were quick to allege that Rogozin was most likely describing the RS-28 Sarmat heavy intercontinental ballistic missile, which is being introduced as part of Russia’s nuclear modernization.

Currently Sarmat is undergoing the final stages development at the Makeyev Rocket Design Bureau in the city of Mias. According to reports, the new missile, weighing at least 100 tons, will be capable of carrying a payload of up to 10 tons on any trajectory.

“We can rip their air defenses apart; at the moment [the US defense shield] poses no serious military threat to us, except for provocations,” Rogozin said.

Last summer the US activated an $ 800 million missile shield base in Romania, which will form part of the larger Aegis-based missile defense system in Europe.

While the officially-stated purpose is to counter a potential threat from Iran, the system’s proximity to Russian borders threatens Russia’s national security by tipping the global balance of power. Moscow has taken counter measures including the deployment of Iskander missile system to its western exclave, Kaliningrad, in the wake of concerns over potentially multi-purpose “defense” installations in Europe.

The land- and sea-based Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System provides the US with missile defense against short to intermediate-range ballistic missiles. Short, medium, and intermediate missiles can also be intercepted using Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.

For intercontinental ballistic missiles the US uses the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD). GMD missile-defense system was developed to intercept enemy warheads prior to their entry into the atmosphere. The system consists of ground-based interceptor (GBI) missiles based throughout the West coast of the US and a radar in the state of Alaska. 

In the lengthy interview about Russia’s military capabilities, Rogozin also mentioned Moscow’s state-of the art tank.

“Speaking of tanks, we definitely have an advantage, because [the T-14 Armata tank] today leaves American and Israeli tanks, not to mention European tanks, behind in terms of technical characteristics.”

First presented at the Victory Parade in Moscow on May 9, 2015, the mass production of T-14 Armata is expected to begin in 2018.

One of tank’s main advantages is its fully-automated and unmanned turret, as well as HD cameras that provide an outside view. It is capable of moving at an estimated speed of up to 90kph, more than 20kph faster than the US mainstay Abrams M1A2.

The Russian military and Uralvagonzavod engineers also promise to turn the T-14 into a completely automated system that can be operated on the battlefield using only a remote control.
