The BBC’s Naga Munchetty criticised Jeremy Corbyn’s record on protecting the Union during what viewers described as a “car-crash” interview with Labour’s Andy McDonald, which one observer said “laid bare” the “sheer hypocrisy” of Mr Corbyn’s stance on the Union. During last night’s BBC leader debate, critics such as Tory Party chairman James Cleverly pointed out the Labour leader’s “hypocrisy” for his concern over the fate of Northern Ireland. Speaking on BBC Breakfast this morning, Munchetty grilled Mr McDonald on whether Mr Corbyn could be trusted to keep the United Kingdom together.

She said: “Let’s talk about some of the issues that were raised last night. One of them was Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal. Jeremy Corbyn says a deal has been agreed which outs border checks between Great Britain and Northern Ireland and therefore puts the union at risk. 

“What is tricky is that not only has Jeremy Corbyn campaigned for a united Ireland but also said to Nicola Sturgeon he will consider an independence referendum. Does he, does the party, even value the Union?”

Mr McDonald replied: “Well absolutely and that is why we have said to the SNP in clear terms there will be no deal done on the election of a Labour Government. We will countenance that in the fullness of time but it is certainly not going to be in an early Labour Government.”

Before the debate, Jeremy Corbyn held a bombshell press conference, claiming that a leaked document showed Mr Johnson’s Brexit deal would have a “devastating” impact on Northern Ireland.

According to the Labour leader, the leaked Treasury report undermined the Prime Minister’s claim that under his Brexit deal there would be no checks on goods moving between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

During the debate itself, Mr Corbyn said: “He spoke at a DUP conference and said there would be no trade restrictions after Brexit whatsoever, we now know there are restrictions.”

He then suggested Mr Johnson put the future of the Union at risk with such a deal. 

Mr Johnson was met with applause from the audience when he responded he found it “slightly curious” to be lectured about the union by Mr Corbyn.

Mr McDonald responded: “This PM said that he would never put a border down the Irish Sea and he has done just that.”

The senior Corbyn ally then suggested that the “clamour for independence would subside” once Labour injected investment into Scotland.

Social media reacted to Munchetty’s interview with a dismal view on how Mr McDonald fared.

One user tweeted: “Andy McDonald having a complete car crash interview on #BBCBreakfast with Comrade Corbyn sheer hypocrisy on Ireland and Scotland being laid bare.”

Jacob Rees-Mogg has been accused of hypocrisy after details of Russian profits from his fund-management firm were revealed. The Tory MP had said that Russia should be “hit financially” over the Skripal poisoning.

Rees-Mogg is a co-founder, director and shareholder of Somerset Capital Management (SCM) – an investment management firm which specializes in emerging markets. SCM confirmed it runs a fund with a stake worth up to £60 million ($ 84 million) in Russia’s largest bank, Sberbank. The MP profits from the bank – through his position as a shareholder – that has been a target of EU sanctions since 2014.

The news sparked outrage on social media, with users racing to blast the Conservative as “hypocritical” and “arguably the stupidest man in parliament.”

The Guardian columnist Owen Jones, among others, attacked the MP:

It comes after the North East Somerset MP called on Prime Minister Theresa May to impose tougher sanctions on the Kremlin following allegations of its “culpability” in the poisoning of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia earlier this month. Taking a dig at Russian President Vladimir Putin, he said in the Commons last week that “tyrants need to be stood up to.”

“I encourage her to impose a freeze on assets, so that people do not have the opportunity of taking them out of the country in the short term,” he added.

As a partner of SCM, Rees-Mogg is eligible to receive dividends from the firm, although there is no requirement to disclose this on the register of member’s interests. He reportedly earns £14,500 ($ 20,400) a month for 30 hours work there.

The discrepancy between Rees-Mogg’s political positions and the work of SCM have previously come under fire. The MP has been a consistent opponent to abortion, even in the case of rape, while SCM invested £5 million ($ 7 million) in an Indonesian pharmaceutical company, Kalbe Farma, which makes stomach-ulcer pills that are also widely used to trigger terminations in the south-east Asian country, where abortion is illegal.

Julian Assange has said the UK is “hypocritical mother f*****” made up of “pathetic fraudsters.” He was commenting on a tweet from the UK embassy in Geneva promoting “free and independent media.”

The UK mission to Geneva tweeted on Friday that it values free media which “holds the powerful to account.” As part of a statement delivered on Thursday to the 37th session of the Human Rights Council, it said:

But the Wikileaks founder, who has spent the past eight years attempting to do what the UK claims to be promoting, pointed out the hypocrisy of the statement. In a scathing attack on the UK government, the Australian said:

“And that is exactly why you have detained me without charge for eight years in violation of two UN rulings and spent over 20 million pounds spying on me, you hypocritical mother fuckers. Your entire international human rights programme is £10.6m, you pathetic fraudsters.”

Assange has been holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for the past six years, after he sought political asylum in Ecuador in 2012. He fears that if he leaves he will be extradited to the US, where he is wanted on espionage charges relating to his publishing of hundreds of thousands of US diplomatic cables and war logs.

In February 2016, the United Nations called on the UK to release Assange as it found he was being held in “arbitrary detention” by the UK and Sweden. The UN’s decision was upheld in November 2017, but attempts to free Assange have to this day been in vain.

Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa told reporters in February that the UK was unwilling to take part in talks. “On the issue of mediation, I have to say very honestly that it has not been successful because two parties are needed to mediate… Ecuador is willing, but not necessarily the other party,” adding that Ecuador would “continue looking for mechanisms.”

Moscow has responded to new Canadian sanctions and banned dozens of its officials from entering Russia. “The list is long and contains dozens of names ‒ the Russophobic Canadian citizens that have been systematically destroying bilateral relations,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

Ottawa introduced restrictions against 30 Russian citizens along with 22 other foreign nationals on Friday, claiming they are involved in “significant corruption” or “gross violations of human rights.” The measure was slammed by the Russian diplomatic mission in Canada as “a false pretext of a hypocritical protection of human rights” which is “absolutely senseless and reprehensible.”

The Russian Embassy has responded to reports in the Times newspaper that claims “concerns are growing” about the Kremlin’s influence in Westminster for the sole, simple reason that British MPs are appearing on RT.

As with any other British media outlet, RT UK invites politicians from across the political spectrum to speak freely on a wide variety of issues. However, the Murdoch-owned, right-wing Times appears to have taken umbrage at this, ‘naming and shaming’ the Tory and Labour MPs who have appeared.

The Russian Embassy was quick to point out the Russophobia and hypocrisy of the Times’ story, tweeting: “@TheTimes: by appearing on RT, British politicians help Putin. Does it mean that by appearing on BBC Russian politicians help May?”

The embassy added: “[Journalist Dominic Kennedy] accuses RT of being one-sided, then tells Tory MPs not to voice their opinion there. Stylish.”

While the Times derides RT as “Putin’s pet TV channel,” it appears to forget its own reputation as a puppet of owner Rupert Murdoch, who stands accused of interfering with British government decisions.

Following the general election in June, which saw Theresa May embarrassingly lose her party’s absolute majority in the Commons, Murdoch faced allegations he had pressured the PM to reappoint now-Environment Secretary Michael Gove to the cabinet, or face bad press in his newspaper titles.

The Tories refused to directly respond to the claims.

Funnily enough, it was Gove who raised his “concern” this week about those MPs appearing on a “literal Kremlin propaganda channel.”

While the newspaper is distressed by any perceived RT “influence,” it has no problem pushing its true-blue agenda. In the lead-up to the general election, Murdoch told his employees at the Sun and the Times that the future of the company was dependent on the Tories winning the election, and told them to be more harsh on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, according to reports.

While the Times raises its “concerns” about “Russia’s influence at Westminster” wielded through RT, the newspaper clearly has a very short memory. The 2011/2012 Leveson inquiry into media standards and ethics in the UK revealed that Murdoch had been in close contact with every Prime Minister in recent decades, including Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair and David Cameron.

The inquiry cast light on the inner workings of the Murdoch empire during the News of the World phone-hacking scandal.

The 168-year-old tabloid was forced to close after it was revealed its journalists had hacked the voicemail of celebrities and VIPs including Prince William, and even of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler.
