Worried at Russia and China’s technological edge, the US aims to have a hypersonic weapon by 2025, the US Navy said in a report. A fortnight later, Vladimir Putin was watching the test launch of Russia’s newest hypersonic missile.

The state-of-the-art Avangard hypersonic glider was successfully tested December 26. It performed in-flight vertical and horizontal maneuvers and hit its intended target, according to the Defense Ministry. The actual speed of the missile, which will enter service in 2019, can reach a whopping 30,000km/h.

The test launch was observed by the Russian President Vladimir Putin, who labelled it “a big event for the armed forces, and probably for the entire country. “

Merely a week before the Avangard test, US Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson released a plan dubbed “A design for maintaining maritime superiority. Version 2.0.” One of the Pentagon’s top priorities for the coming years turned out to be none other than to “develop and field an offensive hypersonic weapon by 2025.”

‘No existing countermeasures’ to Russian hypersonic weapons, US govt. report admits

Admitting to having “no existing countermeasures” against such weapons, the US has long been nurturing plans to boost its own hypersonic strike and deterrence capabilities. In April the Air Force awarded a contract to Lockheed Martin to develop a hypersonic weapon prototype, while, this month, DARPA announced it is seeking“new designs” and materials to make sure prospective hypersonic vehicles do not burn up in the atmosphere.

Another US project, dubbed ‘Glide Breaker,’ to develop an interceptor capable of neutralizing incoming hypersonic gliders, has also reportedly been in the works at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

‘No existing countermeasures’ to Russian hypersonic weapons, US govt. report admits https://briefnews.eu/no-existing-countermeasures-to-russian-hypersonic-weapons-us-govt-report-admits/ https://briefnews.eu/no-existing-countermeasures-to-russian-hypersonic-weapons-us-govt-report-admits/#respond Tue, 18 Dec 2018 04:47:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/no-existing-countermeasures-to-russian-hypersonic-weapons-us-govt-report-admits/ The US is currently unable to repel an attack from the hypersonic weapons that are being developed by Russia and China, as they can pierce most missile defense systems, a recent US government report has revealed.

“China and Russia are pursuing hypersonic weapons because their speed, altitude, and maneuverability may defeat most missile defense systems, and they may be used to improve long-range conventional and nuclear strike capabilities,” the report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reads.

The report also highlights the challenges to American security posed by Chinese and Russian anti-satellite weapons and stealth aircraft that “could fly faster, carry advanced weapons, and achieve further distances.” The rapid development of the cutting-edge technology “could force US aircraft to operate at father distances and put more US targets at risk,” the report notes.

Speaking at a Valdai Club session in October, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia surpassed its rivals in terms of hypersonic weapons, calling Russia’s prevalence in the field “an obvious fact.”

“Nobody has precise hypersonic weapons. Some plan to test theirs in 18 to 24 months. We have them in service already,” Putin said.

In March Putin unveiled several advanced weapons systems, including the Avangard hypersonic glider warheads and the Kinzhal –or Dagger– hypersonic cruise missile. The Kinzhal can fly at Mach-10 speed and has a reported range of 2,000 km (1243 miles). It was reported that Russia’s advanced Sukhoi Su-57 jet might soon be armed with a missile similar to the Kinzhal.

While the Avangard is about to enter military service, the Kinzhal has already been deployed with the force.

Faced with the unmatched hypersonic capabilities, the Pentagon has launched about a dozen programs to protect the US from hypersonic weapons. A project named ‘Glide Breaker’ to develop an interceptor capable of neutralizing incoming hypersonic gliders has been in the works with The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

Pentagon working on ‘Glide Breaker’ interceptor to hit enemy hypersonic missiles – media https://briefnews.eu/pentagon-working-on-glide-breaker-interceptor-to-hit-enemy-hypersonic-missiles-media/ https://briefnews.eu/pentagon-working-on-glide-breaker-interceptor-to-hit-enemy-hypersonic-missiles-media/#respond Sat, 08 Sep 2018 09:46:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pentagon-working-on-glide-breaker-interceptor-to-hit-enemy-hypersonic-missiles-media/ The Pentagon’s DARP agency has started to develop a hard-kill interceptor capable of hitting incoming hypersonic projectiles. The move follows news of Russia’s success in building top-class high-speed weapons.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has launched a high-tech project to develop an interceptor to shoot down enemy hypersonic missiles, the Drive reported.

In September, DARPA displayed concept art of the project, named ‘Glide Breaker’, which depicted features of a hard-kill, kinetic interceptor that is capable of engaging unpowered, high-speed vehicles, the Drive said. The agency’s Tactical Technology Office had previously hosted a gathering to explain the project and its requirements in July 2018, according to the media outlet.

Little information on the project has been made available to the public so far. Back in July, DARPA said that the objective of Glide Breaker will be “to further the capability of the United States to defend against supersonic and the entire class of hypersonic threats.”

It added that the US military is interested in having “component technologies that radically reduce risk for development and integration of an operational, hard-kill system.” If developed, the Glide Breaker would serve as a deterrent creating “large uncertainty for the adversary’s projected probability of mission success and effective raid size.”

However, it is unclear if designing a fully fledged hypersonic interceptor is realistic. The Drive itself notes that knocking down an ultra-fast missile out of the orbit is like trying to “hit one bullet with another bullet.” Hypersonic missiles usually fly at more than five times the speed of sound.

The revelation follows reports of Russia’s successes in developing advanced hypersonic weapons. These first came to light in March of this year, when President Vladimir Putin unveiled an array of futuristic systems during an annual address to lawmakers.

The missiles, some of which are already in service, were said to give Russia an unrivaled deterrent in the future. One was the hypersonic air-launched Kinzhal (Dagger) missile, which is able to travel 10 times faster than the speed of sound.

Another is the Avangard (Vanguard) hypersonic glider, which is still being tested by the military, while the infrastructure – presumably underground silos – is being adjusted to accommodate the device.

News of Russian hypersonic weapons also emerged in Western media earlier this year. In May, CNBC quoted a source aware of US intelligence reports that claimed the Russian military had successfully tested hypersonic weapons twice in 2016.

Months later, the FSB, Russia’s domestic intelligence agency, launched an inquiry over suspicion that classified information on top-class hypersonic projectiles had been leaked to the West. In July, the security service raided two major research and development centers based in and outside of Moscow.

Russia tests new manned space capsule in hypersonic wind tunnel (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/russia-tests-new-manned-space-capsule-in-hypersonic-wind-tunnel-video/ https://briefnews.eu/russia-tests-new-manned-space-capsule-in-hypersonic-wind-tunnel-video/#respond Sat, 30 Jun 2018 02:38:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russia-tests-new-manned-space-capsule-in-hypersonic-wind-tunnel-video/

The future Russian spacecraft, set to replace tried and trusted Soyuz, has been tested in a hypersonic wind tunnel. The capsule will not be protected by a fairing during launch and requires refining of its shape and composition.

The spacecraft, called PTK Federation, has been meticulously developed during the past decade. It is being designed to eventually replace the Soyuz in manned missions and also to serve as a space freighter to supply orbital stations like the ISS.

‘Ten times cheaper’: Russian space company testing iodine rocket engine

In late April three scale models of Federation were delivered to the facilities of TsAGI, or Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute, a leading Russian aviation and space laboratory. The lab has since been testing how the future spacecraft fares under enormous stress during launch and reentry phases. According to an industry source cited by the news agency TASS, the most serious tests in the TsAGI hypersonic wind tunnel have been successfully completed while those involving supersonic flows would continue until the end of the year.

The design of Federation differs from other manned spacecraft because its launch vehicle is not supposed to have a fairing to protect the payload from air flow during launch. Its return capsule is also expected to withstand reentry after a lunar mission with little to no breaking, which means it will have a considerably higher speed when returning to earth than after a low-Earth orbit mission. The capsule must also protect the crew if something goes wrong during a launch.

Russian space agency plans to incinerate space junk with powerful laser beam

All these requirements mean the spacecraft needs to withstand the pressure and temperature resulting from a high-speed air flow coming from pretty-much any direction, and the testing in the wind tunnels gives engineers ideas about what exactly those pressures and temperatures will be. The models used are sized about 1/20 of the real thing and are riddled with sensors taking the necessary measurements.

The manned version of PTK Federation is designed to carry up to four passengers, have an endurance of 30 days or spend up to a year docked to the International Space Station. Its designated launch vehicle is the Soyuz-5 rocket, which is currently under development. Federation’s maiden launch is scheduled for 2023, with the first manned mission a year later.

Russia’s next-gen hypersonic & nuclear weapons ‘not a bluff, but new reality’ – Defense Ministry https://briefnews.eu/russias-next-gen-hypersonic-nuclear-weapons-not-a-bluff-but-new-reality-defense-ministry/ https://briefnews.eu/russias-next-gen-hypersonic-nuclear-weapons-not-a-bluff-but-new-reality-defense-ministry/#respond Mon, 12 Mar 2018 22:09:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russias-next-gen-hypersonic-nuclear-weapons-not-a-bluff-but-new-reality-defense-ministry/ Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister has hinted at an early start to the mass production of the boost-glide Avangard hypersonic systems and has shared new details about Russia’s other recently-unveiled, seemingly futuristic weapons.

“This is not a bluff, but a reality,” Yury Borisov told Russian Ministry of Defense news outlet, Krasnaya Zvezda.

During his March 1 address to the Federal Assembly, President Vladimir Putin had already announced a number of technological breakthroughs, developed over recent years to maintain the balance of power in the wake of the US anti-ballistic missile shield expansion.

The hypersonic Avangard boost-glide system, which has been presented only in a CGI video, has been already “thoroughly tested,” according to Borisov. The device is a sort of payload delivery system, to be fitted into upper stages of strategic ballistic missiles.

Russia’s President described it “as a meteor, as a fire ball” going to a target, while retaining high maneuverability and full control to evade any defense systems. The main obstacle in its development was to create materials that would effectively survive extremely high temperatures of some 2,000 degrees Celsius, Borisov said.

“The practical tests have proved viability of the chosen concept. I’ll tell you more – we already have a contract for serial production of the system. So, it’s not a bluff, but a real thing,” Borisov stated.

Kinzhal hypersonic missile

Another Russian hypersonic novelty, the air-launched missile dubbed the Kinzhal (Russian for ‘dagger’), owes its exceptionally high maneuverability to a system of aerodynamic rudders, Borisov said. It remains unclear whether the missile also maneuvers using some sort of engine gimbal. The munition is launched from high-altitude planes, such as the MiG-31, and has an effective range of 2,000km. It can dodge the defenses of a potential adversary through sharp and swift maneuvering, while travelling some 10 times faster than sound.

The propulsion system of the missile, which can be fitted with nuclear and conventional warheads, still remains a mystery and even the most recent video of its tests did not shine much light. The engine of the missile is concealed within an aerodynamic shroud, which is shot off only when the munition is deployed from a plane.

Nuclear-powered weapons

The two other novelties – a still-unnamed nuclear-powered drone submarine and cruise missile of unlimited range – have the same technological breakthrough behind them, Borisov stated.

Development of these two new weapons has become possible after Russian scientists created a reliable and sufficiently miniature nuclear reactor to power them. If the word “fantastic” can be applied to the recently unveiled weaponry, it perfectly fits this nuclear power horse, the official said.

“Several hours are needed to get the reactor of a nuclear submarine to operational power but, in this case, it happens in a matter of seconds,” Borisov stated. “At the same time, the dimensions of the reactor allow [us] to create a torpedo of acceptable dimensions and weight.”

The cruise missile of unlimited range is based on the same principles, the official said. The ability of the reactor to get operational within seconds is vital for the missile, Borisov stressed, revealing a new, peculiar detail about the munition.

“As you might guess, [the missile] is launched using conventional powder boosters, and then the nuclear reactor kicks in. This must happen really quickly,” he said.

Go watch sci-fi films to underhand Russia’s laser weaponry

The most mysterious weapon unveiled by the Russian president, a “combat laser system,” retains the ‘mysterious’ title, as Borisov also provided quite vague details on it. While it’s known that the Army started receiving the laser systems last year, their exact purpose is not clear yet.

“Our nuclear scientists have learned to concentrate energy needed to hit certain weapon systems of a potential adversary within a fraction of second,” Borisov said, adding that the laser system can reliably “disarm” enemies.

It remains unclear whether the device is a sort of jammer, used to “blind” optical-electronic equipment of enemies’ vehicles, or indeed a sci-fi sort of a laser cannon to blow – melt, actually – holes in stuff with a powerful beam. Given Borisov’s comments, even this might be the case.

“One can talk a lot about laser weaponry, films have been shot about it, fantastic books have been written, everybody knows about it. But the system’s already getting deployed – is today’s reality,” the official said, cryptically.

Hypersonic plane: FASTEST plane in the world goes from Beijing to New York in TWO minutes https://briefnews.eu/hypersonic-plane-fastest-plane-in-the-world-goes-from-beijing-to-new-york-in-two-minutes/ https://briefnews.eu/hypersonic-plane-fastest-plane-in-the-world-goes-from-beijing-to-new-york-in-two-minutes/#respond Fri, 23 Feb 2018 14:52:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hypersonic-plane-fastest-plane-in-the-world-goes-from-beijing-to-new-york-in-two-minutes/

In a bid to be the first to revolutionise their military and civilian programs, Beijing hope to come out top having revealed their research into the hypersonic plane.

The Concorde plane, which could cross the Atlantic in three and half hours, hasn’t flown since 2003.

The plane which could operate at a maximum speed over twice as fast as the speed of sound was revolutionary but Chinese researchers have gone above and beyond, with the reveal of their novel design for the supersonic plane.

If the plans are realised, the ultra-fast plane will be able to carry dozens of people and cargo, whether that’s tourists or military personal.

The plane would be able to travel at a speed 3,700mph – five times faster than the speed of sound.

This means you could travel from Beijing to New in just two hours.

Referred to as the I-plane, the possible uses of such high-end technology make this plane a game changer for air travel.

If travel times of this speed are possible, then that is cutting a journey time by 80 per cent.

A member of the research team has commented: “It’s a crazy design, but somehow they’ve managed to make it work”.

He even went on to describe the plane as, “something like a hypersonic heavy bomber”.

According to the South China Morning Post, the team responsible for the revolutionary design are also said to be “involved in China’s top-secret hypersonic weapons programme”.

This statement has raised questions as to the true purpose of such a fast plane, and caused some worry in certain quarters.

And that’s not all, such advances are pushing China’s technology advances further ahead.

In a comment earlier in the week, the head of American military Pacific Command, Admiral Harry Harris said: “China’s hypersonic weapons development outpaces ours, we’re falling behind.”

China are also responsible for developing the world’s fastest wind tunnel to simulate flight speeds of up to 12 kilometers per second.

This means a Chinese hypersonic vehicle would take just 14 minutes to reach the west coast of the of the US.

Bring back the biplane? Chinese researchers eye old design for hypersonic flight https://briefnews.eu/bring-back-the-biplane-chinese-researchers-eye-old-design-for-hypersonic-flight/ https://briefnews.eu/bring-back-the-biplane-chinese-researchers-eye-old-design-for-hypersonic-flight/#respond Wed, 31 Jan 2018 14:18:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bring-back-the-biplane-chinese-researchers-eye-old-design-for-hypersonic-flight/

Chinese researchers have proposed a new design for hypersonic aircraft that could reintroduce the biplane to modern aviation.

In a scientific article published by Science China Press, four Chinese researchers propose the creation of a “high-pressure capturing wing” (HCW), which could be used to help aircraft with large volumes achieve hypersonic speeds.

Using a biplane-like design, the hypersonic craft’s lower wing would serve as a common compression surface, while its upper wing would serve as the HCW – acting as a kind of supersonic surfboard that would help increase the plane’s lift.

The Chinese researchers created a scaled test model of their revolutionary design, confirming that a two-winged craft offers opportunities for aerodynamic performance improvement.

The authors believe their present study will promote further research in the aerodynamic design of high-speed aircraft, which may ultimately lead to the development of a new class of hypersonic planes.

Biplanes – fixed-wing aircraft with two wings stacked one above the other – were among the first kind of planes to take to the skies. The Wright Flyer, the first successful powered aircraft, was a biplane. The biplane configuration became largely obsolete by the late 1930s.

  • Boeing unveiled a conceptual model for a hypersonic jet that would replace the SR-71 Blackbird.
  • The jet would hit speeds of more than Mach 5
  • No one has committed to building it yet.

Boeing recently unveiled a conceptual model for a new hypersonic jet that would replace the SR-71 Blackbird, according to Aviation Week Aerospace Daily.

The conceptual model was displayed at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics SciTech forum in Orlando.

The “airplane concept and associated technology are targeted for a hypersonic ISR (reconnaissance)/strike aircraft that would have the same type of mission as the SR-71,” Boeing spokeswoman Sandra Angers told Business Insider in an emailed statement. “In that sense it could be a future replacement for the SR-71.”

“It’s a conceptual model for an eventual demonstrator, but no one has committed to building a reusable hypersonic demonstrator yet,” Angers added. “We’re constantly looking to advance concept in technology areas that could someday be asked for by the customer.”

Boeing is one of the largest defense contractors and political donors in the US.

Angers also told Business Insider over the phone that the future generation concept would be able to hit speeds of more than Mach 5.

Boeing’s chief scientist for hypersonics, Kevin Bowcutt, told Aviation Week that the twin-tailed, waverider configuration is an evolving yet feasible hypersonic design.

Aviation Week also reported that Boeing “envisions a two-step process beginning with flight tests of an F-16-sized, single-engine proof-of-concept precursor vehicle leading to a twin-engine, full-scale operational vehicle with about the same dimensions as the 107-ft.-long SR-71.”

Boeing has already experimented with two unmanned hypersonic planes, the X-43 and X-51, according to Popular Mechanics.

In 2013, Boeing tested the small X-51, which hit speeds of Mach 5.1 for more than three minutes before crashing into the ocean, Popular Mechanics reported. The X-51, however, was dropped from a B-52 and used a jettisoned booster to reach Mach 5.1.

Boeing’s conceptual design will have to take off and land on its own, which is much harder, Popular Mechanics reported.

Lockheed Martin is also developing a successor to the SR-71 — the SR-72, which it expects to test in 2020.

US and Australia finish a key round of hypersonic missile tests https://briefnews.eu/us-and-australia-finish-a-key-round-of-hypersonic-missile-tests/ https://briefnews.eu/us-and-australia-finish-a-key-round-of-hypersonic-missile-tests/#respond Mon, 17 Jul 2017 09:23:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-and-australia-finish-a-key-round-of-hypersonic-missile-tests/

The US and its allies are determined to be first out of the gate with hypersonic weapons, and they’ve just taken a big stride forward in that regard… not that they’re saying much about it. Both the US and Australia have confirmed that they recently completed a series of mysterious hypersonic missile tests. All the countries will say is that the flights were successful, and that they represented “significant milestones” in testing everything from the design assembly to the control mechanisms. They won’t even say which vehicles were used or how quickly they traveled, although past tests have usually relied on Terrier Orion rockets (above) and have reached speeds as high as Mach 8.

The tests are part of the long-running HIFiRE (Hypersonic International Flight Research Experimentation) program, whose first launch took place way back in 2009. They should help bring hypersonic flight to a “range of applications,” according to HIFiRE partner BAE. That could easily include ultra-fast aircraft, but it’s widely believed the focus here is on missiles and similar unmanned weapons. A hypersonic missile would fulfill the US military’s goal of building a conventional weapon that can strike anywhere within an hour, and it would be virtually impossible to stop using existing missile defenses. In theory, enemy nations wouldn’t dare attack if they knew they’d face certain retaliation within minutes.

Any real-world uses of hypersonic weapons are likely years away, but they might come sooner than you think. US Navy Admiral Harry Harris recently worried about keeping up with (or ahead of) of hypersonic weapon development by the Chinese and Russians. These latest tests signal that the US isn’t just treating hypersonic weapons as theoretical exercises. It wants practical uses in a reasonable time frame — if just to say that it’s keeping up with its rivals.

The launch was performed as part of a research project which features the US military and Boeing.

The rocket blasted off through Australian skies on an unspecified date in early July.

The video of the launch was posted by the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture & Information Technology of the University of Queensland, a partner in the HIFiRE (Hypersonic International Flight Research Experimentation Program) program, on July 13.

The experimental flight codenamed HyShot 5 or HiFiRE 4 is a joint effort by researchers from Queensland University, Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Group – a unit of Australia’s Department of Defence – the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and a number of high-profile private companies, including Boeing and BAE Systems.

A series of launches have been already carried out within the US$ 54m project, including tests conducted in Hawaii and Norway in 2012, according to The Drive.

The latest test came amid criticisms voiced by some members of the US Congress over the lack of response by the Pentagon to the alleged development of the hypersonic capabilities by Moscow and Beijing, The Drive noted.

In May, US Navy Admiral Harry Harris, head of the US Pacific Command, said at a Congress hearing that Washington will have to counter a potential threat to the US associated with this trend.

“What we can do is to develop our own hypersonic weapons and improve our defenses against theirs,” he said, as cited by the The Drive.

In a congratulatory statement from July 10, Australia’s Defense Minister Marise Payne called the launch “a success” that “takes us one step closer to the realization of hypersonic flight.”

Payne specifically highlighted the role of the launch in raising the military potential of the Australian Defense Force, saying that having mastered the technology of hypersonic flight, Canberra would be better equipped to respond to “future threats.”

The range in Woomera, a remote town in South Australia’s Far North region, housing the Australian Defense Force base and Woomera Test Range, was chosen because of its “vast area and ability to support continuous telemetry collection during the flight,” Payne said.

Saying the July launch would mark the end of the tests performed as part of the HiFiRE series, Payne said Australia aims to maintain its position “at the leading edge of hypersonic research” and looks forward to arranging further hypersonic flight experiments in cooperation with the US.

While the designed speed of the hypersonic missile of Mach 8 (8000 km/hr) nears that of a typical intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the hypersonic glider’s advantage lies in its enhanced maneuverability.
