This week, startup Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (otherwise known as HyperloopTT) announced that it would start building a commercial Hyperloop track as well as an “XO Square Innovation Center” and a “Hyperloop Experience Center” in Abu Dhabi, capitol city of the United Arab Emirates. Construction will commence in the third quarter of 2019, HyperloopTT claimed.

The news seems to extend an agreement made public in April. That’s when HyperloopTT and a state-controlled real-estate developer announced the acquisition of a construction site where a six-mile (10km) commercial track would be built from Abu Dhabi, with the hopes of reaching Dubai.

HyperloopTT and its competing startup, Virgin Hyperloop One, have attracted $ 31.2 million and $ 196.2 million in investment, respectively. Both startups regularly conduct feasibility studies for hyperloop systems in locations across the globe, and they announce agreements with governments eager to cash in on hyperloop’s theoretical potential.

In August 2013, SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk published a white paper detailing a “Hyperloop,” a super-fast passenger train that would overcome the usual friction by levitating above its track on air-bearings, in an enclosed low-pressure tube. In the five years since, advancements have been incremental—a few interesting engineering choices have been swamped by announcements of feasibility studies for routes between populated cities.

Back in 2013, Musk declined to start a Hyperloop company himself (although he has not hesitated to start companies since then, perhaps suggesting that the extra work load was not the limiting factor). Instead, he made his work open to any startups that might want to tackle the challenge, and started a contest series for engineering students to run their own test pods.

Two startups have since dominated the scene: Virgin Hyperloop One, which recently enjoyed a significant investment from Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, and Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT), which began as a collaboration among 800 engineers, designers, and other interested parties.

Virgin Hyperloop One and DP World have announced the launch of a new company that will push the technology into the cargo industry. DP World Cargospeed is a new project that will see the pair look to build Hyperloop-enabled cargo systems to transport “palletized cargo.” It’s not much of a departure from what Hyperloop One has always said it would do, but the new company will be responsible for making it work.

DP World, which already invests in Hyperloop One, is a Dubai-based port owner that controls terminals all over the world. It has holdings on major freight routes in Asia, Africa and the Middle East and would gain a lot from a fast-transit network of its own. Much like co-founder Shervin Pishebar said in 2016, Hyperloop One could connect Europe and China to create a “new Silk Road.”

There’s clearly demand for it, too, since shipping products from China to the west can take several weeks at the present time. Cutting journey times down and saving money would benefit pretty much every manufacturer and exporter in the world. DP World could, theoretically, receive products from China by sea, and then zoom them to Europe in a matter of hours.

The announcement is pretty dry and procedural, except for one thing that chairman Richard Branson let slip to CNBC. The billionaire said that “wether we actually keep the name Hyperloop is something that we’re questioning.” It seems like Branson has an eye on distancing the company from other Hyperloop teams, and certainly using the Cargospeed name would play into that narrative.

For nearly a century, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has relied on the country’s expansive oil reserves to power its economy.

But in recent years, oil prices have rapidly decreased, and Saudi Arabia is now looking to diversify its economy and rely less on oil.

The royal family has created a new plan called “Vision 2030,” which provides a blueprint for modernizing cities across the kingdom. As part of this plan, the country says it hopes to build a Hyperloop, a massive, high-speed pneumatic transit system that would travel between several cities in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

On Monday, Virgin Hyperloop One (one Los Angeles-based company that’s developing the technology) and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman unveiled a prototype of a Hyperloop pod for the project.

If realized, the system would dramatically change how residents move around in Saudi and UAE cities. According to Virgin Hyperloop One, its pod would shrink hourlong commutes to mere minutes.

Saudi Arabia’s Hyperloop would connect several cities in the Middle East, including Dubai, Riyadh, Jeddah, and Abu Dhabi.

The exact planned route of the line is still unclear, however. The company announced in late 2016 that it signed an agreement with Dubai Roads and Transport Authority to evaluate using the Hyperloop between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

While South African wunderkind Elon Musk is busy trying to find humanity a new home among the stars, he hasn’t forgotten about his home planet. This time he’s trying to fix the world’s traffic problems by going underground.

In a series of tweets Friday, Musk outlined an updated version of his underground hyperloop plan by the Boring Company. It is so named not because its plans will send you to sleep, but rather because it bores holes and tunnels into the earth.

Musk certainly talks the talk and not without reason. The inventor has delivered on his previous promise of launching rockets into space and safely landing them back on earth, cutting the cost of such endeavors drastically.

Initially, the Boring Co’s plans involved sending personal vehicles underground on various parking space-shaped lifts. Like the one below.

Musk and his army of boffins have readjusted the Boring Co’s plans, however, prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists instead. Now, people will be sent on an “urban loop system” which would have “1000s of small stations the size of a single parking space that take you very close to your destination & blend seamlessly into the fabric of a city, rather than a small number of big stations like a subway.”

Musk stressed that the company will still transport cars but “only after all personalized mass transit needs are met. It’s a matter of courtesy & fairness. If someone can’t afford a car, they should go first.”

A journey from Los Angeles to San Francisco would take less than 30 minutes (five hours less than the average drive between the two cities). Passengers and cargo would be loaded into a pod, which accelerates gradually via electric propulsion through a low-pressure tube. The pod quickly lifts above the track using magnetic levitation and glides at airline speeds for long distances due to ultra-low aerodynamic drag.
