Emmy Award winner and Starsky & Hutch creator William Blinn has died at the age of 83. Blinn passed from natural causes on Thursday at an assisted living community in Burbank, Calif., his daughter, Anneliese Johnson, told The Hollywood Reporter. In addition to Starsky, which ran for four seasons and produced a total of 93 episodes, Blinn developed Eight Is Enough, Hunter, The Interns, The Rookies and The MacKenzies of Paradise Cove. He also lent his writing chops to critically acclaimed projects like Roots, Fame and Brian’s Song. He was nominated for five Emmys throughout his career, winning for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series for Brian’s Song in 1972 (which also earned him a Peabody Award), and again for his work adapting Roots in 1977. He served as a co-writer on Purple Rain, the musical drama starring the global superstar Prince. Blinn met the singer before accepting the job, and wondered how he could pull off a screenplay about a young, flamboyant leader of a Minneapolis band called The Revolution. That is, until Prince took him for a drive and played him “When Doves Cry,” a song the musician had specifically written for the movie. “He played the song for me, and he had the speaker system from heaven,” Blinn told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2004. “For someone my age, I like rock music, but I don’t like a lot of it. Nevertheless, [the song] was melodic and played with great intensity. I said, ‘Man, you’ve certainly got a foundation. This can pay off at the end.’” In addition to his aforementioned daughter, he is survived by a son, Chris, and his grandchildren, Mackenzie, Eden, Zachary and Zoe.

Remember the Starsky and Hutch reboot we heard about last week? Amazon is already behind it, giving the project a script-to-series commitment. Executive producer James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) is reportedly directing the pilot, which he’s co-writing with his brother, Brian Gunn (PG Porn), and cousin Mark Gunn (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island). However, eboot may me the wrong word for the project because, in a recent Facebook post celebrating the original series and the deal with Amazon, Gunn wrote it’s not a “reboot or a remake, but a continuation of the original series that would deconstruct the buddy cop show in a fun way.”
Below, read what Gunn had to say about the Starsky and Hutch reboot.
The project will mark the first dive into television for Gunn’s production company, Troll Court Entertainment. The filmmaker is working with Sony Pictures Television and the powerhouse producer behind Fast & Furious, Neal Moritz. Gunn wants to make a Starsky & Hutch series that “would honor the genre while turning it inside-out.” He has a lot of love for the series, being the first “adult” show he ever watched and loved, so he doesn’t want to do a spoof like Todd Phillips’ 2004 film starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson.
From 1975 to 1979 on ABC, David Michael Starsky (Paul Michael Glaser) and Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson (David Soul) watched the streets of Bay City, California. William Blinn created the series, and it’s nice to learn Gunn wants to honor his work instead of poking fun at it. Here’s what Gunn wrote about the series:
You may have just read the news that I’m doing a version of Starsky & Hutch over at Amazon, producing alongside Neal Moritz with Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn writing. Well…
When I was a kid, Starsky & Hutch was the first “adult” show I ever saw, and I fell in love. It instilled in me a lifelong love of gritty street shows, of killer 70’s threads, and muscle cars. So when Neal – the producer of the Fast and Furious franchise – asked me if I wanted to be a part of an all new Starsky and Hutch on TV, I was instantly intrigued.
So I considered it. For me, as so many of you know, I can’t become involved with something unless I really love and am committed to the project. So I started writing down some outlandish ideas for how we would handle Starsky and Hutch today – ideas that would be exciting and different and not at all what people expect. This would NOT be a reboot or a remake, but a continuation of the original series that would deconstruct the buddy cop show in a fun way. Like Guardians of the Galaxy did with the space opera, it would honor the genre while turning it inside-out. And it would definitely not be a spoof like the 2004 Starsky & Hutch movie – it would be gritty and driven by both characters and high stakes. I came up with a lot of wild ideas – things I can’t go into quite yet – but stuff that got me excited about the prospect of creating a TV show.
So I sent my ideas off to Neall and the guys and, instead of balking at the twists of it all, they fully embraced my vision and were excited by it. So Neal and I got the two writers I trusted most in the world to work with us, my brother Brian Gunn (co-creator of our PG-Porn web series) and my cousin Mark Gunn. They took my nascent ideas and ran with them, creating a complex storyline we’re all crazy about.
Out of all the places that wanted to finance the pilot script, we chose Amazon. At Amazon I believed we would have the most freedom to create something that is different, challenges the audience, and that strays outside the parameters of genre from time to time. I also have quite a few filmmaker friends who have been working with Amazon lately, and what sets them apart from most of the other friends I have working in TV is that they love them.
So, yes, I AM working on Starsky & Hutch for Amazon: I couldn’t be more excited, and I can’t wait for you guys to see what we come up with. Striped Tomato forever! Stay tuned!
The details:
– This is the first foray into television for my production company, Troll Court Entertainment.
– Sony Pictures TV is behind the show, and Brian, Mark, and I will executive produce alongside Neal Moritz, whose Original Films has an overall deal with Sony TV. The company’s head of TV, Pavun Shetty, is also executive producing.
– The original series was created by William Blinn and produced by Spelling-Goldberg, airing on ABC from 1975 to 1979. It starred Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul as Starsky & Hutch as they protected the streets of the fictional and awesome Bay City.
“Outlandish,” “gritty,” and a story “that strays outside the parameters of genre from time to time” sounds great, especially from Gunn. He can write a story that is completely outlandish but still has real emotion and stakes. The tone of the Starsky and Hutch Amazon series doesn’t sound too different from what Gunn accomplishes with his Guardians movies, which tonally, are impressive in how the director can infuse so much heart and soul into some ridiculousness scenarios. Maybe we’ll see him pull off a similar feat with Amazon’s Starsky and Hutch, which sounds more promising than I ever thought a Starsky and Hutch reboot would sound.

Hot off the blockbuster success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, director James Gunn is reviving a TV classic for Amazon. The tech giant’s studio arm has landed the rights to the Starsky and Hutch reboot, with Gunn penning the script alongside his brother Brian Gunn, and cousin Mark Gunn.
The new series will reportedly be a continuation of the original 1970s show, and is being described as a deconstruction of the buddy cop genre, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It seems Gunn managed to find time to develop the idea between writing Guardians 3 and starting preproduction on the Marvel threequel. The director may also helm the show’s pilot if his busy schedule allows him to. It’s still early days, so there’s no word on who will assume the lead roles, made famous by David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser.
Amazon’s latest win sees it aping the strategy of a streaming rival by resurrecting an iconic TV series. Last year, Netflix unveiled Fuller House, its spinoff of the ’80s family sitcom. The VOD giant also cashed in on its subscribers’ collective nostalgia by rebooting the classic children’s animation Voltron: Legendary Defender.
In case you’re too young to remember, Starsky and Hutch followed the exploits of two street-smart cops (Detective Ken ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson’ and Detective Dave Starsky). Accompanied by their red 1974 Ford Torino (and with the aid of police snitch Huggy Bear) the two buddies went around busting criminals. A film reboot, starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, was released in 2004. And, the show even spawned a video game the previous year.
Gunn seems a solid choice for the revival. The director cut his teeth on reboots and remakes before making the jump to the Marvel fold — his screenplay credits include Scooby Doo and Dawn of the Dead. He also happens to be a sucker for ’70s tunes, as evidenced by the Guardians soundtrack.

The boys are (officially) back in town.
Amazon is developing James Gunn’s Starsky & Hutch revival, the streaming video service announced Thursday.
The reboot comes from Sony Pictures TV Studios.
The new take on Starsky & Hutch is described as a “character-driven, one-hour procedural” that is a continuation of the original series that “deconstructs the buddy-cop genre in the same entertaining way that [Guardians of the Galaxy‘s] Gunn did with the science-fiction genre.”
The potential series will be written by Brian Gunn (James’ brother) and Mark Gunn (James’ cousin) — who will executive-produce, alongside James Gunn — based on an idea from James.
“When I was a kid, Starsky & Hutch was the first ‘adult’ show I ever saw, and I fell in love,” James Gunn said via statement. “It instilled in me a lifelong love of gritty street shows, of killer 70’s threads, and muscle cars… At Amazon I believed we would have the most freedom to create something that is different, challenges the audience, and that strays outside the parameters of genre from time to time.”

There’s no shortage of cops or procedurals to watch on television these days. If watching cops or detectives is your thing, CBS and TNT have you covered on a daily basis. One procedural we don’t have in our lives yet but would tune in for has James Gunn‘s (Guardians of the Galaxy) name on it: a reboot of the ’70s ABC classic Starsky & Hutch. Gunn is reportedly co-writing a pilot, which, if he’s available and all goes according to plan, he would direct. However, the filmmaker tweeted that there’s “some misinformation” going around regarding the planned reboot.
Below, learn more about the Starsky & Hutch reboot.
From 1975 to 1979, David Michael Starsky (Paul Michael Glaser) and Kenneth Richard “Hutch” Hutchinson (David Soul) kept a watchful eye over the fictional Bay City, California. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn is trying to bring the two detectives back with two co-writers, his brother, Brian (PG Porn), and cousin Mark, who co-wrote Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. The one-hour procedural is currently being pitched and gaining interest from broadcast, cable, and streaming networks. THR adds the rebooted series is an expensive package.
The Gunn family will executive produce Starsky & Hutch with mega-producer Neal Moritz (Fast & Furious), whose production company has a deal with Sony TV. Sony TV owns the television rights to Starsky & Hutch, as they do for another famous TV title they’re rebooting for CBS, S.W.A.T. As for the film rights to Starsky & Hutch, they belong to Warner Bos., who made a pretty funny Todd Phillips movie out of the title back in 2004 starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson.
If James Gunn’s schedule with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 allows it, he’d direct the pilot himself, but how deep his involvement in the reboot of William Blinn‘s series goes is uncertain at the moment. Not long after THR’s story broke, Gunn tweeted:
Lots of misinformation about Starsky & Hutch TV show out there so be wary of what you read! More to come soon, okay?
— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) August 24, 2017
We do know The Hollywood Reporter’s story includes one piece of misinformation: Paramount did not pass on the project. Other than that, we’ll have to wait and see what other misinformation there is – but it does look like Gunn is indeed working on a Starsky & Hutch reboot. My immediate reaction is that I hope the tone of the procedural is all James Gunn. His humor and style would certainly make another hour-long cop show stand out from the herd. A Starsky & Hutch reboot with his involvement sounds like can’t-miss TV, but as Gunn tweeted, there’s more news to come. So stay tuned.

Time to drag that old Ford Gran Torino out of the garage: A reboot of the ’70s cop show Starsky & Hutch is in development.
The reboot comes from Sony Pictures TV Studios, according to our sister site Deadline, with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn attached to co-write the pilot and serve as executive producer. (Gunn might direct the pilot as well, depending on his availability.)
The new take on Starsky & Hutch is described as a “character-driven, one-hour procedural,” and is currently looking for a home on both broadcast and streaming outlets. Sony TV recently sold a similar reboot to CBS in S.W.A.T., the Shemar Moore-led cop drama debuting this fall.
The original Starsky & Hutch aired on ABC from 1975 to 1979, and starred Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul as the titular California detectives. This isn’t the first time it’s been revived, either: Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson teamed up for a big-screen remake in 2004.
