The events took place in 2013, but the pay-off was only demanded by Bennett and paid by Argento in recent months, as the scandal around Harvey Weinstein and the #MeToo movement gained momentum. Bennett is now 22 and Argento is 42. As part of the deal, Bennett handed over to Argento the rights to a photograph of the two of them in bed.

In mail exchanges between lawyers and clients the $ 380,000 of apparent hush money is reportedly described as “help” for Bennett, who claims to have been struggling with work and mental health after Argento’s alleged assault, his income dropping from $ 2.7mn in the five years before his encounter with Argento, to $ 60,000 a year afterwards. None of the involved individuals have provided any comment on the matter.

Asia Argento along with a dozen other women kicked off the avalanche of sexual assault allegations that has been hitting powerful men in the US movie industry and beyond. In October 2017 they accused Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct, which precipitated his rapid downfall and became the staple of the #MeToo movement, where women come out with their stories of sexual assault, often at the hands of similarly powerful men. Weinstein himself has been embroiled in criminal cases ever since, and his career rapidly disintegrated.

Authorities in the Ghanaian capital Accra have asked mosques and churches to use WhatsApp to transmit the daily calls to prayer rather than using loudspeakers in a bid to curb noise pollution in urban areas.

The local government in Accra is clamping down on noise pollution, particularly at places of worship like churches and mosques, which can generate lots of traffic and general pedestrian noise as crowds of worshippers congregate on the streets, and additional noise pollution from church bells and calls to prayer.

“Why is it that time for prayer cannot be transmitted with text message or WhatsApp? So the Imam would send WhatsApp messages to everybody,” said Environment Minister Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, as cited by Deutsche Welle. “I think that will help to reduce the noise. This may be controversial but it’s something that we can think about.”

“The Imam is not paid monthly. Where would he get the money to be doing that? We try to practice what is possible. So the text message or any other message is not a problem. But I don’t think it is necessary,” Fadama community mosque Imam Sheik Usan Ahmed, told DW.

There have been similar debates around the daily calls to prayer issued by mosques across the world, from Cologne in Germany, to Michigan in the US, and even in the Nigerian capital, Lagos, which shut 70 churches and 20 mosques in 2016 in an attempt to curb noise pollution.

“Enforcement is a continuous exercise and we have set a target for ourselves. We want to ensure that Lagos is noise-free by the year 2020,” Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LEPA) General Manager Bola Shabi said at the time.

The Ghanaian government eventually plans to enforce stricter laws across the country to quieten down urban areas, particularly in the early morning hours. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that prolonged exposure to environmental noise, like road works, traffic and general street commotion, can lead to an increase in cardiovascular disease, issues with sleep and often some degree of cognitive impairment.

In a test involving 200 mosques in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, 74.8 percent registered noise outputs higher than 85 dB, the threshold at which noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) occurs in occupational settings.

Sound-level tests at a mosque in Dubai produced a reading of 80 decibels (roughly the same volume as a vacuum cleaner) at a distance of 50 meters in an urban area, according to The National. Prolonged exposure to sounds above 86 decibels, roughly equivalent to busy city traffic, can cause hearing loss over time.

The agreement was meant to prevent Clifford from commenting on her alleged affair with Trump, in exchange for a $ 130,000 payment.

A $ 130,000 payment by President Donald Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, to the adult-film actress Stormy Daniels may have amounted to an illegal contribution to the Trump campaign, according to Trevor Potter, former chairman of the Federal Election Commission (FEC).

Cohen previously admitted he used his personal money to pay Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, to keep her from sharing details of an alleged 2006 affair with Trump. Cohen said the payment, which was made 11 days before the 2016 US presidential election, was a private transaction; he claimed that neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was involved. He also claimed he was never reimbursed for the money.

  • The Wall Street Journal reported that President Donald Trump paid off a porn star with hush money ahead of the 2016 presidential election.
  • Legal experts say there’s pretty much nothing about such a payment that would put Trump in legal jeopardy.

The Wall Street Journal published a salacious story on Friday alleging that President Donald Trump paid $ 130,000 in hush money through his lawyer to a porn star a month before the election to keep her quiet about a 2006 sexual encounter.

If that is indeed true, legal experts say that while the morality and ethics of the situation are questionable, such a payment is not something that could land Trump in legal jeopardy — even as he occupies the nation’s highest office.

“I don’t see any legal implications,” said renowned Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz in an email to Business Insider on Tuesday.

The allegations in the Journal’s story were eye-popping: That one of Trump’s top lawyers, Michael Cohen, sent $ 130,000 to porn star Stephanie Clifford, whose stage name is Stormy Daniels, just weeks before the 2016 presidential election. The publication reported that Cohen arranged for the payment weeks before the election after negotiating with her lawyer on a nondisclosure agreement.

The alleged encounter, which The Journal reported was consensual, happened at a July 2006 celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, a year after Trump married his third wife, Melania Trump.

Both the White House and Cohen denied the report, included a two-paragraph statement Cohen had sent to The Journal addressed “TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN” and signed “Stormy Daniels” that denied any engagement in a “sexual and/or romantic affair” with Trump.

“Rumors that I have received hush money from Donald Trump are completely false,” the statement said.

Soon after the report, some pointed to a portion of former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon’s comments in the recent book “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” alleging that another of Trump’s longtime attorneys, Marc Kasowitz, “took care” of 100 women during the presidential campaign.

“Look, Kasowitz has known [Trump] for twenty-five years. Kasowitz has gotten him out of all kinds of jams,” Bannon reportedly said. “Kasowitz on the campaign — what did we have, a hundred women? Kasowitz took care of all of them.” 

A spokesman for Kasowitz told Business Insider the claim was “pure fiction.”

‘Law and morality are distinct concepts’

But even if such hush money payments were as common as Bannon’s comments lead on, experts say there really is no legal statute they would be in violation of.

“While the law often codifies moral sentiments, law and morality are distinct concepts,” Andrew Wright, a former associate counsel to President Barack Obama and Vice President Al Gore and a law professor at Savannah Law School, told Business Insider in an email. “Assuming any sexual interactions were consensual and without more information, I don’t see a legal violation based on a payment to a sexual partner to keep quiet.”

“Based on the reporting, this tryst was alleged to have happened in Lake Tahoe. While adultery is a crime in some 21-states, Nevada is not one of them,” he continued. “As to this sordid episode, people will have to make up their minds about the president’s fitness for office based on their assessment of his character rather than a legal violation. Unfortunately, that payment was designed from preventing voters from having that information available to them on Election Day.”

Richard Painter, who served as chief ethics lawyer to former President George W. Bush, echoed Wright and Dershowitz. Not only did he think that there were no legal ramifications of the alleged payment, he added that “this sex stuff is going pretty hot and heavy” and said he thinks Trump “is benefitting from this because it makes him look like all the others.”

“A lot of these politicians are having affairs and even some of them have women coming forth that say they did stuff years ago, and Trump has that,” the University of Minnesota law professor added. “And the more I think the opposition goes down with looking at his sex life, I think they’re getting in trouble.”

If the president used campaign funds to pay Clifford, that could become problematic, Painter said. But he doesn’t see a window for much else “unless there is a clear law that is demonstrably broken.”

“So the point is, on these sex things … I think it’s sort of a tempting shiny object, because a lot of the Democrats are falling for it because of this #MeToo stuff,” he said. “And you know all I see is now you’ve got [Sen. Al] Franken gone and Trump is still there. I don’t see it as an avenue that pays off.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that Maroney’s lawsuit alleges that the Olympic champion signed a confidential $ 1.25 million settlement agreement with USA Gymnastics in December 2016, after Nassar was arrested in Michigan on the child pornography charges.

The agreement included a non-disclosure clause relating to Maroney’s allegations of abuse by Nassar. Maroney’s attorney, John Manly, who filed a lawsuit on behalf of the gymnast on Wednesday, said the London 2012 gold medalist willingly signed the agreement, but did so under psychological trauma brought on by the news that dozens of other women had been victims of Nassar.

“I want people to understand that this kid had no choice. She couldn’t function. She couldn’t work,” Manly told ESPN. “Confidentiality agreements in child sex abuse cases are unlawful in the state of California and have been for years. We’re basically saying USAG and its lawyers violated the law by asking McKayla to agree to it and that she should be free to talk about her abuse to whomever she wants, whenever she wants.”

The 22-year-old Maroney, who is now retired from gymnastics, broke the agreement in October after posting an emotional statement on her Twitter page, in which she detailed Nassar’s seven-year-long sexual abuse, beginning when she was just 13 and continuing to her retirement from competition in 2016.

“I was molested by Dr Larry Nassar, the team doctor for the US Women’s National Gymnastics Team, and Olympic Team,” she said in the statement. “Dr Nassar told me that I was receiving medically necessary treatment that he had been performing on patients for over 30 years.

“It seemed whenever and wherever this man could find the chance, I was ‘treated,’” Maroney wrote. “It happened in London before my team and I won the gold medal, and it happened before I won my silver” she added.

Following Maroney’s revelation, two more gymnasts from the Team USA 2012 gold-winning squad, Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas, admitted that they also suffered sexual abuse by Nassar, who faces lawsuits from more than 100 women.

It remains unknown whether USA Gymnastics made offers of similar agreements to other alleged victims. The lawsuit filed by Maroney names the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), USA Gymnastics, Nassar and his employer, and Michigan State, as defendants.

In a statement released on Wednesday, USA Gymnastics denied allegations that the confidential agreement with Maroney was initiated by the organization, adding that it was the gymnast’s attorney at the time, Gloria Allred, who “approached USA Gymnastics, requesting that the organization participate in a confidential mediation process.”
