Doctor Who has long been a fan-favourite, rebooted with spin-offs left right and centre, bringing with them a whole host of celebrity characters viewers are eager to see fight off alien threats. One stark character fans were impressed by is the War Doctor, who made a shock appearance in the series seven finale The Name of the Doctor, when the Eleventh Doctor (played by Matt Smith) and companion Clara Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman) are trapped in the timeline. Portrayed by the late John Hurt on-screen in 2013, the Time Lord’s “missing” incarnation brought much mystery to the show, which was later explored in an audio series where the actor reprised his role. But since his passing in 2017 from pancreatic cancer aged 77, the character has now been recast, as the prequel featuring the War Doctor’s younger self is set for release next year. This particular incarnation was introduced by former writer Steven Moffat, as a secret version of The Doctor that came between number Eight and Nine, who embraced violence to fight against the Daleks in the Time War. Now, Jonathon Carley is said to be taking over the role and will make his debut when the tapes become available in June 2021. READ MORE: Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker opens up on ‘nerves’ for new TV project Of his appointment, he said: “I honestly can’t tell you how much of a privilege and an honour it is to not only be working with the incredibly talented team at Big Finish but also to be playing the War Doctor. “It is more than I could ever have expected. “Stepping into the sturdy boots of a character established by the late, great Sir John Hurt would be a challenge for any actor. But the team have been so supportive and creative in their approach to exploring further facets of this complex incarnation.” He teased the upcoming audio files aren’t ones to miss. “This is a cracking set of stories so it will be wonderful to put a spotlight on the rarely glimpsed early life of the War Doctor and the trials he faces, finding his new place in the Time War. “I worked really closely with John Hurt on our original The War Doctor releases, and although we only worked together for a short time, such was his commitment, charm and openness that he allowed me to feel something of a connection with him. And I can confidently say that what Jonathon is doing here will be a fitting tribute to John, in honour of his great work in the role,” he told Radio Times. Elsewhere in the Whoniverse, rumours are running rife that Bradley Walsh‘s character Graham O’Brien, is bowing out of the BBC show as the upcoming festive special brings with it a whole lot of drama. Various sources have suggested that the episode The Revolution of the Daleks, will end with a grim demise for poor Graham, but BBC and the actor are yet to speak out about his fate. If the rumours are correct and Graham’s departure is imminent, could he fall victim to their biggest enemy?
‘WHAT HAPPENED TO COOL HEADS?’ | As the episode began, a Native American mom discovered that her older daughter Sila hadn’t made it home the night before. When it became obvious that the girl might never make it home again, Chief Rainwater called Kayce for help searching for the missing person that, in his heart, he knew wasn’t missing but dead. Over at the ranch, as Rip, Kayce and some of the bunk-house boys were about to move their cattle uphill — right past the buffalo that the resort had installed as a tourist attraction — John instructed the cowboys not to flare up at bison babysitter Wade. And then he immediately flared up at the scoundrel himself. “What happened to cool heads?” asked Kayce. “I didn’t mean me,” his dad replied. When Wade refused to lose a moment’s sleep keeping the buffalo from crossing onto Yellowstone, Kayce told him that that was fine. “I’ll keep ‘em out, but you’re gonna f–king hate the way I do it.” So yeah, although John and Wade’s feud was so old, it should’ve been long dead, it still had a lotta life in it.
At the Duttons’ place, Jamie sorta randomly decided that he was sick of being picked on by Beth, so he wanted to address the elephant in the room, right then, right there. This was a mistake of epic proportions. He’d ensured that his sister could never have children, she reminded him. And “you actually believe that you’re helping, like in your heart. But you refuse to acknowledge the carnage that your help leaves behind, because as a man, you’re broken.” Seriously, this scene was like watching Beth slowly pull Jamie’s spine out through his mouth. She almost didn’t blame him, even. John “made you into something you had no business being. But there’s no right or wrong with you, just his approval” — and a fear of Daddy’s disapproval that was so great, it made him evil. “And you are evil. You have to know that.” Jamie feebly protested that he’d only ever tried to protect the family. But it was like throwing a glass of water at a forest fire. “The more you become what he wanted you to become,” Beth continued, “the more he’ll hate you for it. And he does hate you for it. We all do.” Lord, I hope there was some Irish in their coffee. That was rough!
‘YOU GOTTA LEAVE YOUR BRAIN OUT OF IT, DECIDE WITH YOUR HEART’ | Watching Mia and Laramie practice their barrel racing, Lloyd was incredulous. “Two dances [with Laramie], and here I am hauling them to the arena, saddling their horses,” he marveled to Jimmy. “Now I’m the damn buckle bunny.” (Hey, it wasn’t just two dances; Laramie also regularly called the old coot baby and sugar.) By and by, talk turned to Mia; she was gonna want more than the bunk house someday, Lloyd told Jimmy. Unfortunately, he had no idea how to provide it for her, what with his rodeo days being over and all. Riding bucking broncos had been supposed to be his ticket to Easy Street. It still could be, suggested Lloyd, adding that he’d only quit the circuit when his body had quit on him. Damn it, Lloyd, what are you getting that boy into besides traction? Meanwhile Market Equities CEO Willa Hayes arrived in town for a sit-down with Roarke and Jamie. Though the black sheep of the Dutton family at first appeared to be up to the task of holding his own with Willa, she made his jaw drop so hard, it almost thunked when she proposed buying John’s 50,000 acres for $ 10,000 an acre. “You see that look? Desire,” she told Roarke as they left. “We’ll close” the deal. “I don’t think he’s the hard one to close,” Roarke replied. Truer words might never have been spoken.
After the search for Sila yielded the expected result — her body was found in a ditch — Monica was understandably upset by the unfairness of it all. “There’s monsters everywhere in this world,” Kayce told her. “Ya just gotta kill ’em when ya find ’em.” How, she responded, were they supposed to be found when manpower was so low, Chief Rainwater had had to call Kayce for extra hands. When Kayce, clearly not getting it at all, told his wife not to make it her fault, she had to explain, “I’m not making it my fault, I’m making it my problem.” Hear her, Kayce. Stop making it worse. “Ya can’t stop the world from being bad,” he said, totally ignoring my sound advice. “Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try,” Monica replied. Elsewhere, Mia and Laramie heard about the nearby buffalo, and off they went with the bunk-house boys to see if they could take a ride. “Those girls,” Ryan predicted, “are gonna get us killed.” Yup. “And they ain’t even our girls,” replied Colby. The following morning, Beth warned John that what Yellowstone was facing… “it isn’t an enemy, it’s a perspective, it’s a shift in values. The world doesn’t value your way of life anymore, Dad.” She couldn’t wage this war by herself. Then she’d have to teach Kayce how to fight, John said. And learn to trust Jamie. Come again? When she balked as only Beth could, her father pleaded with her to reveal what she knew that the rest of them didn’t. “What did he do?”
‘IT’S ALL FOR NOTHING’ | Finding Monica looking for clues at the crime scene — and, beyond that, looking to ease her feeling of powerlessness — Chief Rainwater told her that he was forming a council to address violence against women on reservations. “Our first fight is against being ignored,” he said. “I can lead that fight,” she replied, a new purpose in her voice. Back at Yellowstone, off his talk with Beth, John entered the house with murder in his eyes. Practically chasing Jamie around the room, he asked what would happen in 30 years? When Tate had to fight for Yellowstone, who the hell was gonna be around to fight with him, thanks to Jamie? Thankfully, before John could break any promises not to beat the life out of Jamie, Kayce came in and broke up the scene. At that point, John stalked off to mutter hopelessly, and Jamie punched out the stained glass in the front door, then angrily sobbed, “I f—king hate him!” like a potty-mouthed Jan Brady. So, what do you think will be the fallout from Beth’s revelation? Will John tell Rip and let Rip put Jamie in one of those open graves? Will Jamie screw over Daddy? Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday’s The Masked Singer.
If you thought The Masked Singer‘s Penguin was on fire in her smackdown round against Eagle a few episodes back, you don’t know how right you were.
The black-and-white bird’s impassioned performance of Fifth Harmony’s “I’m Worth It” led to her victory that night — Eagle wound up unmasked and revealed as Dr. Drew Pinsky — but rising temperatures inside the custom-made costume also nearly took her out.
“When I did the dancing for my life, it was so much work, and I was out of breath,” says the Penguin, who was revealed in Wednesday’s episode to be former View co-host Sherri Shepherd. (Read the full episode recap here.) “I literally felt like I was going to pass out… But I think it was because my adrenaline was going. Because I’m not a singer. I didn’t even know you had to breathe when you sing! Half the time, I was holding my breath.”
TVLine chatted with Shepherd about her time on the show — and why when it came to a Lizzo song, the truth really hurt.
TVLINE | You had the smackdown against the Eagle, whom we now know is Dr. Drew Pinsky. Afterwards, he told us that he didn’t know who the Penguin was, but that she was aggressive.
[Laughs] Here’s the thing: I couldn’t see where I was at. All I could see was the Eagle’s feet. And I did a kick that I thought Beyonce did at Coachella. I guess she didn’t. But I thought that she did. I didn’t know I almost kicked the Eagle in the chest. Because I couldn’t see. And I was so aggressive because I wanted to stay! It was either me or the Eagle, you know? Bird-on-bird! I knew I wanted to be the bird that stayed. And I was like, “Damn it if anybody knows I’m Sherri. I don’t care. I’m going to drop it like it’s hot and twerk my ass off, because I don’t want to leave!”
TVLINE | And you were successful.
They had me, right at the end, I said I’m going to pass out. Everything in me was shaking because it was so much exertion. And this mask — you start feeling claustrophobic. That’s what it is. I said you’ve gotta take it off. They sat me down and took it off and I said Oh my God. I’ve never loved fresh air more.
TVLINE | Even last season, Jenny thought you were on the show. What came first: Your desire to be involved, or her suggestion that you might already be involved?
It was literally her suggestion, because I was watching with [my son] Jeffrey [during Season 1] and I saw my face pop up, because she thought it was me. I said it’s not me. I was texting Jenny going, “That’s not me!” She was like, “Yeah, right.” I thought it was so much fun, because I loved that I could watch the show with my son. And then when they asked me, I was at some fancy-schmancy dinner, and I screamed. Because I was so excited. Then I realized, “Oh my gosh, do they know I can’t sing?” I look like a gospel singer, but I’m not. I do look like I can sing, but I can’t. I am a professional karaoke-r.
TVLINE | I wouldn’t say you can’t sing, but you’re not a professional singer.
You ain’t got to say it. I said it!
TVLINE | So how do you prepare for something like this when you have no singing background?
There was a lot of prayer. I started out wanting to do Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts.” They had me with a vocal coach who was amazing. And I started singing that daggone “Truth Hurts” and trying to dance, and I said, “Oh yeah, we ain’t going to be able to do this,” because you’ve really gotta breathe. I said I don’t understand how Lizzo does it naked, twerking, playing the flute and is able to do this. That’s when I realized: Whatever gift you have, you’ve got the other gifts that go along with it. Lizzo is a singer, so she knows how to breathe. I’m a comic. I don’t have to breathe on stage. I put you out of breath, laughing.
TVLINE | Let’s talk for a minute about some of the clues in your package. There are mentions of “the new adventures of old Penguin” and how you never “curbed my enthusiasm.” You haven’t been on those shows!
Being on TV. Being on sitcoms. I even said, “I was with many presidents.” Being on The View. Interviewing people who were running for president. You skirt the edge of a clue, because you don’t want them to guess. That was all about, just, TV.
TVLINE | What was better: Your worst day on The View or your best day on The Masked Singer?
[Laughs] They’re so different! On The Masked Singer, I don’t have five other people in my ear, screaming at me. I don’t have Barbara Walters in my ear when I’m singing, going, “What are you doing, dear?”

We begin Episode 2 at the loft, where Lea urges Shaun to give dating another chance. At the hospital, he is confronted by Carly, who notices his discomfort and assures him that she had a really nice time at dinner. In fact, she’d love another date. But Shaun tells her that he had a horrible time — so much so that he never wants to see her again. (Ouch!)
Later that night, Carly shows up at Shaun’s apartment and tells him that they need to talk. “I thought we had a really nice time,” she says. “I’m confused about how you feel, and how I feel about how you feel… so if you have any feelings for me at all, you’ll help me understand.” The two then embark on a late-night walk, during which Carly reveals to Shaun that her little sister Andi has autism as well. She thinks growing up with Andi helps her better understand Shaun, but it also makes her wonder about herself. Did she go out with Shaun to prove something? Did she think it would somehow make things better for Andi? “Trying to figure out what we want, why we want it, and if it’s good for us, are all good questions,” Carly says. “They can’t all be answered over one dinner.”
Throughout the hour, Shaun receives pointers from his friends and colleagues. First there’s Park, who recounts the story of his own disastrous first date with Mia, which ended in the E.R. after she took a hockey puck to the face; had he given up, he wouldn’t have found happiness. Second is Morgan, who explains that love is biological, and it’s never going to make sense to Shaun or anyone else. Third is Lea, who makes Shaun aware that he couldn’t have explored all the possible permutations of a relationship with Carly after just one date. Then there’s Glassman, who tells his mentee that it’s worth opening himself up to potentially getting hurt.
The advice doesn’t stop there. Andrews explains that few things in life come without a cost — and the surgical attending speaks from experience, having recently been ousted as president after he defended Murphy and fired Dr. Han. But perhaps the most important advice comes from Claire, who tells Shaun that some of her best dates have been lounging out on a couch, sharing a bag of chips. Shaun likes the sound of that, and heads to the pathology lab with a delicious snack in hand. Since there’s no couch, he and Carly sit down on the floor for a low-key second date.
In addition to helping Shaun, Claire this week navigates what it means to have her mother back in her life. The bipolar Breeze recently suffered a setback (she went off her medication, dabbled in drugs and alcohol, and lost her apartment), but seems to be doing better now. Claire initially gives Breeze just one week to find another apartment, but eventually softens and tells Mom that she can stay as long as she continues to take her meds and see her psychiatrist. Meanwhile, at work, Lim chooses Claire to be the first of the third-years to lead a surgical procedure — and Morgan is not happy about it.
Last but not least are Lim and Melendez, who find their relationship put to the test for the first time since Lim’s promotion. As chief of surgery and Melendez’s boss, she is forced to intervene when a newborn’s parents suspect that Melendez made a mistake in surgery. Lim assures them that Melendez is one of St. Bonaventure’s top surgeons and “erred on the side of caution” during their son’s procedure, which rubs her boyfriend the wrong way. Lim then offers to perform the follow-up surgery, which reveals that the baby had two unrelated conditions causing the same symptom; they would have never discovered the second condition had the boy not faced complications following the initial procedure. At the end of the day, Lim and Melendez that this was just a bump in the road, and they’ll get better at not letting their professional relationship interfere with their professional one.

AUSTRALIA have been left frustrated in the UAE by a “strange” and little-known rule which has twice cost them crucial wickets in the Test series against Pakistan.
]]>SOME call it a zero-carbon schism, others a heresy. The researchers, policymakers and environmentalists united over the need to stop global warming are divided on how to go about it. Many believe that renewable energy, especially wind and solar, has by far the biggest role to play. A dogged few, however, cling to nuclear energy, which is also carbon-free but has an image problem. The two camps barely speak to each other.
That is why three little words, “zero-carbon resources”, in a bill that landed on the desk of California’s governor, Jerry Brown, on August 29th are so important. Not only would the legislation commit the state to generating 60% of its electricity from renewables by 2030, up from a previous mandate of 50%. It also calls for generating 100% by 2045 from renewable and “zero-carbon resources”, which could include nuclear power. Of course, by then other emission-free energy technologies, such as batteries, hydrogen, and the capture and sequestration of carbon dioxide…

Washington came out swinging against Moscow when it announced new sanctions Friday against two dozen Russian nationals and 14 Russian entities.
The sanctions target seven Russian oligarchs and 17 senior government officials who are closely aligned with the Kremlin. The US will also penalize 12 companies operated by the sanctioned oligarchs; Rosoboroneksport, a state-owned weapons manufacturer known to have transported arms to the Syrian regime; and Rosoboroneksport’s subsidiary, the Russian Financial Corporation Bank.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Ajit Pai can usually count on support from broadband industry lobbyists and conservative think tanks each time he announces a new policy.
But Pai’s proposal to limit broadband choices for poor people who rely on a telecom subsidy program is coming under fire from all directions.
Pai, the Federal Communications Commission chairman, wants a major overhaul of Lifeline, a federal program that lets poor people use a $ 9.25 monthly household subsidy to buy Internet and/or phone service. Today, more than 70 percent of wireless phone users who rely on Lifeline subsidies buy their plans from resellers, i.e. companies that purchase capacity from network operators and then resell it directly to consumers.
