The Bahamas

The Bahamas is now famous for its swimming pigs, which you can find on Rose Island

THE BAHAMAS

Head for Nassau and New Providence, where Atlantis Resort’s Dolphin Cay is offering new snorkelling, paddleboard and kayaking with dolphin experiences in their 11-acre lagoon with beaches and connected pools.

But the most famous Bahamian animals nowadays are the swimming pigs. You can now wallow in the shallows with these friendly porkers on Rose Island (sandytoesbahamas.com), just 25 minutes from Nassau by boat.

Travelbag (0203 139 7030/travelbag.co.uk) offers seven nights at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, Nassau from £1,599 (two sharing), room only. Price includes return flights from London Heathrow to Nassau. Bahamas tourism: Bahamas.co.uk

ANTIGUA

Antigua

Antigua offers superb beaches and has a host of places to stay, from friendly inns to luxury hotels

With blindingly white sand shelving gently into a jade sea, Antigua has superb beaches and a host of places to stay ranging from friendly inns, through lively all-inclusives to swanky super-luxury.Once a base for the Royal Navy (definitely visit the atmospheric Nelson’s Dockyard), it is also a centre for sailing. But the way to explore is on the new beach-bar trail.

Short powers Hurricanes to first BBL win https://briefnews.eu/short-powers-hurricanes-to-first-bbl-win/ https://briefnews.eu/short-powers-hurricanes-to-first-bbl-win/#respond Mon, 01 Jan 2018 11:13:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/short-powers-hurricanes-to-first-bbl-win/ WHAT a difference a couple of days can make.

On Saturday the Sydney Thunder cruised to an easy 57-run win over the Hobart Hurricanes in Tasmania but just two days later that result was turned on its head when the visitors saved their season with a nine-run victory.

Set 190 to win, Englishman Jos Buttler was again outstanding for the Thunder backing up his man-of-the-match 67 at the weekend with 81 but it wasn’t enough as he continued to run out of partners at the back end of the innings.

BLOG RE-CAP: NEW YEAR’S DAY BIG BASH DOUBLE HEADER

Shane Watson and Kurtis Patterson both made solid contributions of 36 at the top of the order but they could never really get a hold of the Hurricanes’ attack which was backed up by some excellent fielding.

Cameron Boyce (2-14) and Jofra Archer (2-42) were the pick of the bowlers but D’Arcy Short was the star for the Hurricanes with a brilliant 97 off just 63 balls set up the win.

His spectacular hitting included nine fours and four sixes put him within a boundary of the first century of BBL07.

It also came with plenty of drama.

He was caught by Ryan Gibson off a no-ball by Mitch McClenaghan who was sensationally taken out the attack by the umpires for bowling two balls over waist height in the same over.

Watson was left to bowl the final three balls of the innings and snared Short when he was again caught in the deep this time by Chris Green.

The Northern Territorian also had a free hit to potentially bring up the ton when he was on 95 but managed just a single.

Short’s partnership with Ben McDermott was pivotal, the pair put on 104 off just 50 balls to turn the Hurricanes innings into a formidable total.

McDermott’s 49 not out came in even more destructive fashion off just 25 balls and included six fours and two sixes.

The Thunder’s trio of spinners Fawad Ahmed, Arjun Nair and Chris Greene dominated two days ago but were ineffective at Spotless Stadium.

Nair was the only wicket taker with 1-27 as the bowlers struggled to back up their skipper’s choice to send the Hurricanes in to bat when he won the toss.

The Tasmanians made a point of going after the spinners Nair and Ahmed in particular.

Colts coach answers question about team’s struggles with bizarre ramble about ‘Groundhog Day’ and hurricanes https://briefnews.eu/colts-coach-answers-question-about-teams-struggles-with-bizarre-ramble-about-groundhog-day-and-hurricanes/ https://briefnews.eu/colts-coach-answers-question-about-teams-struggles-with-bizarre-ramble-about-groundhog-day-and-hurricanes/#respond Tue, 28 Nov 2017 15:31:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/colts-coach-answers-question-about-teams-struggles-with-bizarre-ramble-about-groundhog-day-and-hurricanes/ chuck paganoClark Wade/Indy Sports/Twitter

  • Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano on Monday gave a strange rambling answer to a question about his team’s struggles.
  • Pagano jumped on a reporter’s reference to the movie “Groundhog Day” and began talking about specific scenes.
  • Pagano then compared the struggles to a hurricane, diving into the science of storms.

The Indianapolis Colts are 3-8, playing out the last string of games to end a lost season plagued by the absence of Andrew Luck.

Asked about his team’s struggles and if it affects the players’ mentality, Colts coach Chuck Pagano instead seized on a reporter’s “Groundhog Day” reference, and launched into a confusing ramble that seemed to fly over the heads of the press.

“Yeah, that song played, woke up to that this morning,” Pagano said after a reporter asked him if the repeated losing is like the film “Groundhog Day.”

“That Sonny and Cher?” Pagano said. “‘I got you, babe. I got you, babe.’ Went down and got my coffee, said hello to what’s her name, little gal in the coffee shop, stole the money out of the back of the truck, drove my truck off the, into the tar pit, or whatever, off the landfill. Jumped off a building, lived through it.”

When reporters seemed confused, Pagano asked if they had seen the movie, adding, “You spend so much time on Twitter, you’re not enjoying the better things in life.”

Pagano then shifted to comparing the Colts’ struggles to an oncoming hurricane, diving deep into the science of storms.

“There’s a storm in the Atlantic,” Pagano said. “Hurricane whatever you want to call it. Winds are gonna hit landfall. It’s coming. It’s third quarter, middle of the third, it’s getting late third, they’re up 10. It’s gotta happen some time. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy right now.”

Pagano continued: “What’s gotta happen, being in Miami six years, them storms start coming off the coast of Africa and it’s coming through the Atlantic, and they start coming up, what happens is, if you get a Nor’easter, right? You get a storm on top … When it comes down, that pressure hits, right, and it pushes the storm, where? Back out to sea. And it goes up the coast and there’s very little damage. Those rings that spins this way and those bands up top are the most egregious bands, they’re far enough out where nobody gets hurt.”

The entire rant seemed to be lost on reporters, with one reporter speaking up midway through the answer, saying, “That’s a good answer.”

On August 9th, deep in the southern Gulf of Mexico, Hurricane Franklin reached 85mph winds before moving into Mexico. Although the storm dropped some heavy rains over the Mexican state of Veracruz, Franklin’s effects were relatively moderate, and it was soon forgotten.

But following Franklin’s formation two months ago, eight additional tropical systems have developed and been assigned names by the National Hurricane Center. And during this frenetic season, all of those systems have become hurricanes as well. That’s nine in a row, which is unprecedented in the modern hurricane era.

According to Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane scientist at Colorado State University, nine consecutive named storms have not reached hurricane status since 1893. The record is 10 such storms, which happened in 1878, 1886, and 1893. However, it is unlikely that those years really recorded 10 hurricanes in a row, given that most observations were made on land or by ships.

Hurricanes Irma and Harvey Spur the First Employment Decline in 7 Years https://briefnews.eu/hurricanes-irma-and-harvey-spur-the-first-employment-decline-in-7-years/ https://briefnews.eu/hurricanes-irma-and-harvey-spur-the-first-employment-decline-in-7-years/#respond Fri, 06 Oct 2017 15:17:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hurricanes-irma-and-harvey-spur-the-first-employment-decline-in-7-years/ On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the U.S. labor market shed 33,000 jobs in September—the first decline in the total number of paid positions in the economy in seven years. The unemployment rate, however, fell to 4.2 percent from 4.4 percent. (The unemployment rate doesn’t directly measure job loss, rather reflects the number of Americans who say that they are unemployed and actively seeking work.)

Economists had expected a small uptick in the jobs figure—around 80,000 added for the month. But instead the number fell, although only trivially, likely due to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, which ravaged the Southeast and resulted in declining economic activity at restaurants, bars, and in the construction industry. Economists believe that the economy should recover from these acute crises. The BLS’s data do not cover Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, where damage has been even more significant.

Despite September’s losses, the labor market is still performing reasonably well, adding an average of 148,000 jobs per month since January. Even as the economy suffered losses due to hurricanes, other areas, including healthcare and transportation, experienced significant growth in September.

But there are still causes for concern: Labor force participation is stalled at 63.1 percent, and wage growth continues to be middling. In September, wages reached $ 26.55—a 0.45 percent increase from August and a 2.9 percent jump from this time last year. But that improvement could also be storm related, since many of the workers who lost jobs during the month were likely low-wage employees, leaving the remaining wages a pinch higher.

Puerto Rico may not get power for another 6 months — here’s a look at the hurricane’s devastating effects https://briefnews.eu/puerto-rico-may-not-get-power-for-another-6-months-heres-a-look-at-the-hurricanes-devastating-effects/ https://briefnews.eu/puerto-rico-may-not-get-power-for-another-6-months-heres-a-look-at-the-hurricanes-devastating-effects/#respond Sat, 30 Sep 2017 18:01:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/puerto-rico-may-not-get-power-for-another-6-months-heres-a-look-at-the-hurricanes-devastating-effects/ puerto rico gas shortageReuters/Alvin Baez

Puerto Rico is still suffering from the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria that left 3.5 million people without power.

Hurricane Irma, which hit Puerto Rico earlier this month, left one million Puerto Ricans without power. The island was still recovering from the storm’s aftermath when Hurricane Maria hit, crippling the entire island’s electrical infrastructure.

Here’s what you need to know:

Puerto Rico’s electrical infrastructure was in need of repairs and upgrades before the hurricanes hit. PREPA, the island’s electric company, hasn’t had the funds to modernize the grid. Puerto Rico also lacks the number of workers required to make the repairs.

That means rebuilding the island’s electrical infrastructure will be an even longer process. San Juan Mayor Carmen Cruz says it could take up to 6 months to revive the electric grid.

Satellite night images show the extent of the damage. Hurricane Maria knocked out 80% of the island’s transmission lines, leaving most of the island in darkness.

Along with other Caribbean islands, Puerto Rico has been utterly devastated by Hurricane Maria. The island that makes a living from tourism is already thinking: What will the hurricane mean for their already ravaged economy?

On the night of Tuesday, September 19, Paulina Salach Antonetti was, like most residents of Puerto Rico, battening down the hatches. She was worried about her home and her safety, but she was also worried about her business and, especially, about the five people she employs at Spoon Food Tours, her San Juan-based tour company that offers guided culinary excursions around the capital.

More than a week after Hurricane Maria made landfall, she still hadn’t heard from two of them.

Salach Antonetti had, however, heard from many other people. Her inbox was full of messages from American travelers. One of the few people on the island able to get online briefly (more than a week after the hurricane, the entire island remains without electricity and most telecommunications services), she had received numerous requests to cancel scheduled food tours.

“We’ve had no inquiries or bookings since the island was hit by Maria,” she says. “We’ve only had cancellations that so far, go through December. We’ve issued thousands of dollars in refunds and have no new bookings for 2017 or 2018.”

Though Salach Antonetti is concerned about basic survival needs—she says that “Every day is a struggle to get drinking water, food, gas, etc.”— she is also deeply concerned about her employees and the island at large, which is so dependent upon tourism. “There is no money coming in,” she says, “but we all still have to pay rent, cell phone bills, buy water, food, and gas. We are living—and will be for an undetermined period—out of our savings.”

Nine days after Maria, a Category 4 hurricane preceded by Hurricane Irma, which also tore across the Caribbean, most travel providers—from major chain hotels and vacation rental owners, to guides and tour operators like Salach Antonetti—are literally still digging out of the rubble. They are, in fact, struggling to simply survive in conditions that have been described by various mainstream media outlets as catastrophic and “war-like.”

But as they wait for aid to reach them and for basic services to be restored, literally disconnected by geography and technology from the rest of the world, they have all too much time on their hands to think about the future. For Puerto Rico, which even before the hurricane was suffering under the immense stress of a $ 70 billion debt and the consequential strains on its healthcare, education, and agricultural systems, as well as its basic infrastructure, Hurricane Maria is being viewed as nothing less than a total catastrophe.

Salach Antonetti hasn’t seen a lot of the international coverage of the hurricane and its damage—with communications severely restricted, she has limited online time, and she spends what time she has on managing client cancelation and refund requests. But the coverage that she has seen leaves her feeling torn.

“We need help, so we need to show the world the level of damage,” she says. “On the other hand, the more negative press the island receives, the more reluctant travelers will be to visit.” And this, in the long-term, is what concerns her and other travel industry employees the most. “As soon as things are stabilized,” she adds, “we will need the tourism more than ever.”

For Cuba, the perception of the Caribbean at large being off-limits is an even more troubling prospect, says Conner Gorry, a journalist and the owner of Cuba Libro, the island’s only English-language bookstore. Already, Cuba was experiencing a drop-off in tourism after Trump’s announcement of an impending roll-back of the travel and diplomatic advances achieved by the Obama administration.

This season’s hurricanes have only compounded the slump. “It’s a double whammy, we’re experiencing. Universities are cancelling their study abroad programs (because of Trump, not Irma), agencies are cancelling trips (Thomas Cook has cancelled all Cuba travel post-Irma and is offering refunds or different destinations to clients already booked to Cuba), and there are shortages of certain staples like toilet paper and condensed milk that we depend on for what we offer our customers in our café, ” says Gorry. “Our donation programs are suffering too, since people usually bring material donations in their luggage. Our condom program (we’ve given out over 12,500 since we opened) is now stalled for lack of condoms.”

Throughout the Caribbean, residents who make their living from tourism are fighting as much for their livelihoods as for their very lives. Major hotels in Puerto Rico are frantically trying to clean debris, do repairs, house rescue workers, offer support to the community, and provide a tentative timeline to travelers regarding when they can expect resumption of full operations. Eager to roam travelers, however, may not be willing to wait, nor deal with the uncertainty of the current rescue and recovery timeline.

But everyone interviewed for this article hopes travelers *will* wait and that they will think about the fact that their Caribbean travels will be more important to the region than ever. If you want to help in the wake of the hurricanes, they all say, the best thing you can do is to take a vacation.

Gold’s advice for travelers? Be patient and don’t cancel reservations until more information is available, and contact the owners or managers of properties where you’re staying to find out the status, and cancellation policy. “The more cancellations we get now, the longer it will take us to rebuild and get back up and running, “ explains Gold.

“Some colleagues of ours who own properties in Vieques have heard from upcoming guests, asking not only to keep their reservations on the books, but asking how they can help when they come down, to make it a ‘working vacation’ to help clean up the island,” adds Gold. “ This is incredibly inspiring to me, and I can only hope that many others will do the same.”
