Jailed Catalan leader Jordi Turull has been transferred to an infirmary, after his health deteriorated 14 days into the hunger strike he and a colleague began, to demand a fair trial over their role in the independence referendum.

The former spokesman for the regional Catalan government of Carles Puigdemont was relocated to the infirmary inside Lledoners prison in Catalonia. “There are no worrying signs, this is part of a medical protocol,” his doctor Jaume Padros wrote on Twitter, noting that his patient remains in stable condition.

A day after being admitted to the hospital on Saturday, Turull reassured his supporters that, besides feeling weaker and “lazier,” nothing too “serious” is happening with his health so far. In his letter, the jailed pro-independence politician urged his supporters to continue to “mobilize” to protect the rights of political prisoners.

Together with former Catalan National Assembly leader Jordi Sanchez, Turull announced the hunger strike on the first day of December, stressing they will “never give up on our right to a fair trial.” The condition of Sanchez remains unknown, yet the duo previously emphasized they were not planning to starve themselves to death, but only to send a “message.”

Currently, 22 activists and politicians face treason charges for their role in Barcelona’s independence push last year. Spanish state prosecutors are demanding a 16-year sentence for Turull, for what they called a “rebellion” against Madrid.

25 Healthy Snacks for Work: Decrease Hunger and Increase Productivity https://briefnews.eu/25-healthy-snacks-for-work-decrease-hunger-and-increase-productivity/ https://briefnews.eu/25-healthy-snacks-for-work-decrease-hunger-and-increase-productivity/#respond Fri, 28 Sep 2018 05:45:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/25-healthy-snacks-for-work-decrease-hunger-and-increase-productivity/ Snacks are awesome. They bridge the gaps between our meals, provide us a little mental reset, and can oftentimes lead to a healthier weight.

How does this magic work exactly? Well, let me tell you:

Incorporating snacks into your mid-morning and mid-afternoon can balance out your blood sugar, preventing those dreaded spikes and crashes. A proper snack can also lead to sustained energy by providing you with energy all day long.

Remember, food is fuel. So without adding gas to your tank, you will quickly run out leading to decreased productivity and a crabby mood.

What about the healthy weight you may ask? When you provide your body with proper fuel throughout the day, you don’t meet meal time with starvation. You have more control when you dinner plate lands on the table, leading to decreased portions and less chance of over-eating. In fact, oftentimes I recommend snacks to most of my nutrition clientele.

The perfect snack follows a simple formula: Protein + Produce. This will give you carbs for a quick energy bump combined with fiber and protein for sustaining that energy. This snack duo also lends itself to be quite portable. A no fuss approach to feeling better throughout the day is always welcome.

Here are some healthy snacks for work to sustain your energy, keep your focus locked in, and promote that healthy weight:

How Vegan Bodybuilding Diet Keeps Hunger at Bay While Plant Based https://briefnews.eu/how-vegan-bodybuilding-diet-keeps-hunger-at-bay-while-plant-based/ https://briefnews.eu/how-vegan-bodybuilding-diet-keeps-hunger-at-bay-while-plant-based/#respond Fri, 31 Aug 2018 19:20:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-vegan-bodybuilding-diet-keeps-hunger-at-bay-while-plant-based/ I remember when I cracked the code to fat loss.It was in June 2015 and I was staring in the mirror. Traces of a sixpack had become visible. It was my first time I’d ever seen them. Ever.Since that moment on, my friends asked me jealously over and over again: “How did you do it?”I thanked them all. But they wouldn’t understand. Weight loss is simple, but not easy.

How I started the vegan bodybuilding diet

It was in the beginning of 2015 that I’d made the scary decision to stop eating animal products and started the vegan bodybuilding diet. I was a meat-head before.Poultry and rice in a tupperware was the only thing that I’d known. Readily packaged in my lunch box every morning before I left the house. While I did gain muscles with that diet I’ve felt unfulfilled. I had a lethargic attitude, with little energy.– “Is this what my life is going to be like?” I’d started to ask myself.I didn’t feel I could reach any destination with the little drive and constant fatigue that I had. People called me “Aschess” way back in high school. It’s the swiss-german word for having no drive. No interest. No direction.I didn’t have any direction. Nor did I feel I wanted to.Only later did I realize that it could all be linked to my eating habits. I was eating poison, not fuel. In hindsight, I was a monkey.

The pleasure-chasing money

Farmers and hunters in third world countries have been catching monkeys for centuries. The way they do it is by setting up a trap. A container, filled with fruits. The container contains two holes, one on the top, one on the bottom. The hole on the top is not big enough to get the food out, the fruits get sneaked in from the bottom by the trap-setters.Then they wait. Every once in a while a monkey approaches and tries desperately to retrieve the fruit through the top-hole. The farmers or hunters slowly move in but the monkey can’t let go of the fruit. It got competing demands. The monkey wants to keep the fruit more than it wants to keep its freedom. At the moment of life or death, it couldn’t let go of the enticing promise. If the monkey just surrendered what it was holding onto, it would be living a free life. At the sight of the dangerous humans, it could have dropped the food, pull out his limbs and flee the scene. Yet it didn’t. It couldn’t.Monkeys get caught with pleasure traps.Little did I know that I was also caught in a pleasure trap set up by the food industry.

Pleasure vs Motivation

I am not a big fan of Sigmund Freud and his theories. Yet what I agree with him on is that every human being deals with competing interests. At 2am in the morning, we decide that we want to better our life in an instant. The next day we catch ourselves scrolling mindlessly through Facebook. This phenomena can be explained by the motivational triad. Living beings are motivated by three things:

  1. Pleasure seeking
  2. Pain avoidance
  3. Energy conservation

These 3 motivators are omnipresent. We want to get in better shape because we seek the envious stares of our friends at the beach – we seek pleasure. Or because we hate seeing an unhealthy number on the weighing scale – pain avoidance. But probably one of the strongest motivators is energy conservation. We want to spend as little energy as we possibly can.If we expended energy like no tomorrow, we would’ve not be able to survive in scarce times.

Are you eating fuel or poison?

Our food choices are based on the motivational triad. We seek energy-dense, easy to eat food that give us maximum mouth pleasure. That’s why Nutella is so popular all around the world.Nutella is a snack, carefully formulated to appeal to our innate pleasure seeking and energy conservation factors. It’s perfectly manufactured to make us addictive. If we want to live healthy, lose weight and keep hunger at bay while eating plant-based, we have to eat fuel, not poison.

Eat fuel: The 3 distinctive factors

Filter your foods through these 3 filters and they will help you keep hunger at bay and lose weight. This helps you avoid the pleasure trap.

Filter #1: It’s vegan.

“First, nutrition is the master key to human health. Second, what most of us think of as proper nutrition—isn’t.” — Dr. Colin Campbell

If there’s one thing we have to realize, it’s that meat and dairy is not a super package. There is not a single gram of fiber to be found in animal products. Fiber helps us feel satiated and feeds our healthy gut microbiome. Also plant-based foods have up to 33 times more antioxidans than animal products.((Nutrition Journal: The total antioxidant content of more than 3100 foods, beverages, spices, herbs and supplements used worldwide))

Filter #2: It’s unprocessed.

Mother Nature’s powers cannot be stuffed into a pill. — Dr. Michael Greger, MD

The food is not fancy packaged. Most of the best food choices can be found in the produce isle.In processed foods we can often find added salt, sugar and other artifical sweeteners. Processed foods (even when vegan) also often contain less fiber. For example brown rice is to be preferred over white rice, because white rice is a processed product. It’s fiber content is greatly diminished.I have seen great results just by switching white rice with brown rice in my clients’ diets.

Filter #3: It’s solid.

All our calories should always come in solid form. This increases our satiety and is way more healthy. We should minimize our soda intake. Eliminating soda and smoothies out of our diets, for weight loss, can dramatically increase our progress.

What to eat in a day

This is a sample meal plan of how your day could look like. This meal plan is not meant to be followed 1:1. Pick what works for you and disregard what doesn’t.This day is taken out from my popular article:7-Day Vegan Diet Plan: Eat Healthy with Under 2,000 Calories per DayTotal stats of this plan is:1872 calories, 244g carbs (61%), 71g fat (18%), 85g protein (21%), 59g fiberFor the average women (5’4”, 126 pounds, moderately active, age: 26-45), this is a calorie deficit of about 100 calories. For the average men (5’10”, 154 pounds, moderately active, age: 26-45), this is a calorie deficit of about 700.((CNPP: Estimated Calorie Needs per Day by Age, Gender, and Physical Activity Level.))The goal deficit for sustainable weight loss is about 300 calories. For the most effective results, the average women should therefore eat a little bit less (minimize the nuts). And the average men should eat a little bit more (add handful of nuts and berries throughout the day).

Conclusion

We humans are caught up in pleasure traps in our dietary decisions. Too often we eat food that is silently poisoning us. It’s time to stop being a monkey. We need to fuel our precious engine instead of clogging it. Spare parts are few and there’s a waiting list. Repairing costs are expensive, especially in countries with no health coverage. Therefore we should pay special attention to where our food comes from, it’s level of manufacturing and consistency of substance. This way, we’re not only fueling our body, we’re also paving our way to our best shape ever.

With pressure mounting on India’s government over investigations into the gang rape of an 8-year-old girl, another brutal sexual assault and murder case is highlighting violence against minors and women in the country.

Last week, protesters took to the streets of Jammu and New Delhi over the death of Asifa Bano, an 8-year-old girl reportedly gang raped and murdered in the Kathua district last January. The killing has caused outrage in parts of the country, with eight men including a former revenue official and a police officer arrested over the brutal assault and murder.

The length of the investigation as well as reports that ministers from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party attended a Hindu Ekta Manch rally supporting the suspects has inflamed tensions.

The president of the Delhi Commission for Women, Swati Maliwal, has gone on hunger strike in an effort to bring about stricter punishments and death sentences for those who commit rape and murder.

“I will not break my fast till the PM ensures better safety for the women in this country,” she said, the Indian Express reported.

Now police in the western city of Gujarat say they have begun another investigation into a rape of a child that occurred on April 5. The case involves an 11-year-old girl, who was found dead at the side of a highway on April 6, Reuters reported.

“The body was recovered was on April 6… and according to a post mortem report, the girl was sexually assaulted and murdered on April 5,” Gujarat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma told Reuters.

“We have put our best teams in place with all senior police officials. To nab the criminals we first need to identify the body,” he added.

‘Logan’s Run’ Remake Lands Simon Kinberg to Direct, ‘Hunger Games’ Scribe to Write https://briefnews.eu/logans-run-remake-lands-simon-kinberg-to-direct-hunger-games-scribe-to-write/ https://briefnews.eu/logans-run-remake-lands-simon-kinberg-to-direct-hunger-games-scribe-to-write/#respond Mon, 05 Mar 2018 14:42:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/logans-run-remake-lands-simon-kinberg-to-direct-hunger-games-scribe-to-write/ Logan's Run Remake

A remake of the sci-fi classic Logan’s Run has been in the works for over a decade. The project has seen several filmmakers come and go as it has developed over the years, including Bryan Singer (X-Men), Joseph Kosinski (TRON Legacy), and even Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive). Now a a new director has stepped up to the plate, and it’s actually a filmmaker who was attached to write and produce the film back in 2015.

X-Men franchise producer Simon Kinberg, who is currently hard at work on X-Men: Dark Phoenix, has closed a deal to direct the Logan’s Run remake. However, he won’t be writing the script this time. Instead, that responsibility falls to The Hunger Games scribe Peter Craig.

Deadline has the news on the Logan’s Run remake director job finally being filled again, and it sounds like this might be the one that sticks. The project has been kicking around Warner Bros. Pictures for awhile, and this iteration with Kinberg has been in the works for a few years. That seems pretty promising, but nothing is ever certain until it’s in front of a camera.

For those unfamiliar with the original 1976 sci-fi film by director Michael Anderson, here’s the official synopsis:

In the year 2274, young residents enjoy an idyllic, hedonistic lifestyle within the protective confines of a domed city. The general belief is that when each person turns 30, they are reincarnated for another blissful life cycle. Those who know the much darker truth become “runners” and flee to a hidden sanctuary. When law enforcement officer Logan (Michael York) goes undercover to locate the refuge, he winds up instead trying to initiate a revolution with runner Jessica (Jenny Agutter).

Is a Logan’s Run Remake Still Interesting?

Because a Logan’s Run remake has been in the works for a long time, that’s allowed plenty of other sci-fi movies with similar premises and themes to hit the big screen. That makes me wonder if the premise of Logan’s Run will be interesting to general audiences. Movies like The Maze Runner, The Hunger Games, The Island, Oblivion and Divergent (and plenty more) have borrowed elements from Logan’s Run, so it would take something special to make Logan’s Run stand out. It might help that the studio is considering a female lead this time around.

Logan’s Run is based on a novel by William F. Noland and George Clayton Johnson. That makes me think that we’ll be looking at another situation like when the adaptation of the sci-fi classic novel The Giver was finally released. The film felt stale because of how many of the story elements had already been utilized in other sci-fi movies for decades.

For some reason, Deadline says Warner Bros. is hoping to replicate the success of Blade Runner 2049. But that seems misguided. Even though that movie has been revered and acclaimed by fans and critics, not to mention being nominated for several Oscars (and even winning one of them), it was considered a box office disappointing. The film only made $ 92 million domestic and $ 167 million globally on a budget of $ 150 million. It didn’t make anywhere near what the studio was hoping. Does Warner Bros. really want that to happen again?

Joel Silver is still on board to produce the Logan’s Run remake, but there’s no release date yet. Stay tuned.

  • Marvel’s “Black Panther” is on track to have the biggest February opening of all time.
  • If domestic box office sales go the way experts are predicting, it could could surpass some of the biggest movie openings of all time.
  • The film’s early success proves that “Black Panther,” which has a predominantly black cast and was directed and written by a black man, is the kind of movie people want to see.

In addition to rave reviews, Marvel’s “Black Panther” is on track to have the biggest February opening weekend ever.

And if domestic box-office sales go the way experts are predicting, they could even surpass some of the biggest openings of all time.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, tracking service NRG estimates the movie’s domestic debut will be between $ 165 million and $ 170 million, which would make it the biggest February launch of all time, beating 2016’s “Deadpool,” which opened at $ 152.2 million.

Two weeks ago, NRG predicted “Black Panther” would make $ 125 million opening weekend. So that number could surge even higher.

As Franklin Leonard, founder of The Black List, pointed out, if the projections are correct that means “Black Panther” could beat some of the biggest openings of all time. It could have a bigger opening than movies including “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “The Dark Knight,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and all movies in “The Hunger Games” franchise.

Here’s how films with massive opening weekends compare to the “Black Panther” projections:

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I” (2010): $ 125 million

Warner Bros

“Furious 7” (2015): $ 147.18 million

Universal

“Spider-Man 3” (2007): $ 151.1 million

Columbia Pictures
