Hungary approves ‘Stop Soros’ law criminalizing aid to illegal migrants https://briefnews.eu/hungary-approves-stop-soros-law-criminalizing-aid-to-illegal-migrants/ https://briefnews.eu/hungary-approves-stop-soros-law-criminalizing-aid-to-illegal-migrants/#respond Wed, 20 Jun 2018 19:19:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hungary-approves-stop-soros-law-criminalizing-aid-to-illegal-migrants/ Hungary’s parliament has passed a law that could see anyone helping illegal immigrants claim asylum in the country imprisoned. The ‘Stop Soros’ law is named after Hungarian-born billionaire and open-borders advocate, George Soros.

The law was voted on in the Hungarian parliament on Wednesday, where Viktor Orban’s right-wing Fidesz party holds a two-thirds majority. Under the law, individuals who aid migrants, informing them about the asylum procedure or “providing financial or property benefit” will be liable for a 12-month prison sentence. NGOs working with migrants will need to seek licenses and will see the scope of their work severely restricted.

The law was criticized by Human Rights Watch, who called it “the latest salvo in the Hungarian government’s war on refugees and those who help them.”

Under its terms, aid workers suspected of “enabling illegal immigration” could be barred from border areas at the authorities’ discretion. Activists fear that this could be used against watchdog groups and journalists keeping an eye on Hungarian authorities.

The law also grants the authorities permission to deny asylum claims to migrants who arrive from a country other than their own.

“We want to use the bills to stop Hungary from becoming a country of immigrants,” said Interior Minister Sandor Pinter.

The bill is named after Hungarian-born billionaire and liberal financier George Soros. Soros has been a vocal critic of Orban’s government and at the height of the refugee crisis, stated that the “EU has to accept at least a million asylum-seekers annually for the foreseeable future. And, to do that, it must share the burden fairly.”

Orban has accused Soros of attempting to use mass migration to undermine Europe’s stability. “Soros has antagonized not only us but also England, President Trump and Israel too,” Orban said in February. “Everywhere he wants to get migration accepted. It won’t work. We are not alone and we will fight together… and we will succeed.”

So far, Orban appears to be winning. Soros’ Open Society Foundations ended its operations in Hungary this April, citing “an increasingly repressive political and legal environment in Hungary.” The Hungarian government had previously hinted that Soros’ NGO could be punished under the new law.

“If Soros is found to have engaged in such activity, meaning he organizes illegal immigration, then the rules will apply to him,” government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs said in February.

In addition to the ‘Stop Soros’ law, the parliament also passed a constitutional amendment on Wednesday stating that an “alien population” cannot be settled in Hungary, a rebuke of the EU’s plan to impose resettlement quotas on member states.

Viktor Orban rode a wave of populist sentiment to victory in Hungary’s 2010 elections. Since then he has been a constant critic of liberal democracy, and of the European Union. When waves of migrants began pouring into Hungary over the Serbian border, his government erected a 110-mile long, double-layer security fence in 2015.

At present, Hungary accepts two asylum seekers per day. Once their claims are processed, they often disappear towards Austria and Germany.

  • George Soros’ Open Society Foundation (OSF) is closing its Hungarian office, citing a “repressive political and legal environment.”
  • Hungary recently passed a law dubbed the “Stop Soros Act” that gives the interior minister the power to expel NGOs.
  • The recently re-elected right-wing Hungarian government ran a poster campaign against the billionaire, accusing him of meddling in countries’ affairs.
  • The OSF president said: “The government of Hungary has denigrated and misrepresented our work and repressed civil society for the sake of political gain, using tactics unprecedented in the history of the European Union.”

George Soros’ Open Society Foundation (OSF) is pulling out of Hungary after the introduction of tighter restrictions on non-governmental organisations in the country that have been dubbed the ‘Stop Soros Act.’

The OSF announced the move on Tuesday, blaming “an increasingly repressive political and legal environment.” The foundation, which is funded by Soros and supports civil society groups around the world, said it will continue to support its work in Hungary and channel funding to projects from it’s office in Berlin.

“The government of Hungary has denigrated and misrepresented our work and repressed civil society for the sake of political gain, using tactics unprecedented in the history of the European Union,” OSF president Patrick Gaspard said in a statement.

The retreat for OSF follows a landslide election victory for the right-wing Hungarian government led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Orban has been an outspoken critic of Soros and the activities of his foundation. The Prime Minister has accused him of meddling in the international affairs of countries and trying to flood the EU and Hungary with migrants. The government ran a poster campaign against Soros andsent a questionnaire about the billionaire to 8 million Hungarians.

Speaking after his election victory, Orban said: “I know they [the OSF] won’t accept the result of the election, they will organize all sorts of things, they have unlimited financial resources.”

The attacks on OSF, which the NGO says are unfounded, were a core element of Orban and his Fidez parties’ political campaign which saw them re-elected for a third term with almost 48% of votes.

Orban has increased his power over the media and put allies in control of institutions that were previously independent. He fell out with both Soros and the EU over the 2015 financial crisis and his stance on restricting immigration.

The Fidez party initiated the “Stop Soros Act” in February. It enables the interior minister to ban NGO’s working on immigration citing possible “national security risks.” It requires foreign-funded NGO’s, like OSF to pay 25 % tax.

Soros, born in Hungary and a Jewish survivor of World War II, is worth around $25 billion and is best known in the UK as “The Man who broke the Bank of England” after he bet big against the pound in 1992 and made more than $1 billion.

The Hungarian billionaire has faced attacks in recent months from populists and nationalists who denounce his support for liberal causes.

Soros attacked his critics in a January interview with the Financial Times, saying that the dominant ideology in the world now is nationalism. He added that he believed Putin was behind many of the attacks on him.

“It’s déjà vu all over again with one big change — the dominant ideology in the world now is nationalism,” said Soros. “It’s the EU that’s the institution that’s on the verge of a breakdown. And Russia is now the resurgent power, based on nationalism.”

'Time for warnings has passed': EU committee demands sanctions against Viktor Orban's Hungary https://briefnews.eu/time-for-warnings-has-passed-eu-committee-demands-sanctions-against-viktor-orbans-hungary/ https://briefnews.eu/time-for-warnings-has-passed-eu-committee-demands-sanctions-against-viktor-orbans-hungary/#respond Fri, 13 Apr 2018 03:11:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/time-for-warnings-has-passed-eu-committee-demands-sanctions-against-viktor-orbans-hungary/ The European Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs committee will ask MEPs to vote for Hungary to be sanctioned over alleged violations of the rule of law, just days after Viktor Orban’s decisive re-election.

“Time and time again, Viktor Orbán’s government has undermined the independence of the judiciary, freedom of the press and the fundamental rights of its citizens,” said the motion, authored by Dutch Green Party MEP Judith Sargentini, who has led an investigation on whether Budapest is in breach of “EU values.”

Days after Orban’s Eurosceptic, anti-immigrant Fidesz party took the vast majority of the country’s parliament seats in a landslide election win, the EU committee proposed invoking Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union. It could force Hungarian officials to defend their country before the European Council, and it could eventually see Budapest’s voting rights in the EU suspended.

“This is not something we call for lightly. But the EU has an obligation to protect the rights of every single one of its citizens. With no sign that the Hungarian government will change course, the Council must initiate proceedings now,” wrote Sargentini.

Approval of the initial stage of Article 7 would require votes from two-thirds of the European Parliament’s 750 members. The European People’s Party (EPP) – the largest in the EU Parliament – that contains members of Orban’s Fidesz party, says that it will not back any moves to punish Hungary. Article 7 has only been invoked once in EU history, against Poland in 2015, though no significant sanctions have come of it so far.

Orban’s government, which has been in power since 2010, is being incriminated for restricting the operation of foreign-funded universities and NGOs, which affected the George Soros-backed Central European University in Budapest and his foundations, restricting the rights of migrants, religious and ethnic minorities. The EU is also concerned about “the functioning of the constitutional system,” as well as “the independence of the judiciary and of other institutions” and corruption.

Fidesz says that the attacks on Hungary are a politically-motivated punishment for refusing to bend to EU rules on accepting migrants.

“My problem with this committee, this debate and the rapporteur is that they don’t want to accept the unquestionable decision of the Hungarian citizens who overwhelmingly voted in favour of the Hungarians government’s path,” Kinga Gal, an MEP from Fidesz, told the media in Brussels. “We are being punished because we have stood up against mandatory relocation of migrants into Hungary.”

Indeed, a lot of the support for Orban’s party in the recent election is thought to come from his tough stance against accepting migrants. With Hungary located on the main land route for Middle Eastern refugees into the EU, Orban has made it a point to make sure his country isn’t forced to bear the brunt of the migration crisis. Since the start of the massive influx of asylum seekers in 2015, he has built border walls and pushed back against EU-inforced quotas on accepting migrants.

Orban’s sworn nemesis in this is American-Hungarian billionaire George Soros, who Orban accuses of “organizing illegal immigration” through a network of NGOs. This enmity has given a name to the landmark ‘Stop Soros Act,’ soon to be introduced by Fidesz, which aims to severely tax the work of foreign-funded NGOs in Hungary.

Hungary PM Orban declares victory as ruling party projected to take 67% of parliament seats https://briefnews.eu/hungary-pm-orban-declares-victory-as-ruling-party-projected-to-take-67-of-parliament-seats/ https://briefnews.eu/hungary-pm-orban-declares-victory-as-ruling-party-projected-to-take-67-of-parliament-seats/#respond Sun, 08 Apr 2018 22:43:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hungary-pm-orban-declares-victory-as-ruling-party-projected-to-take-67-of-parliament-seats/

Viktor Orban has claimed a decisive victory and is set for a third term as Hungarian prime minister, after preliminary results show his Fidesz party taking an overwhelming majority of at least 134 seats in the 199-seat parliament.

“We have won… Hungary has won a great victory,” Orban told a crowd of cheering supporters at a Sunday night rally, who responded by spontaneously singing the country’s national anthem.

According to preliminary results of Sunday’s parliamentary election, the incumbent Prime Minister’s Fidesz party secured over 48 percent of the vote. The far-right Jobbik party received roughly 20 percent in the early results, while the Socialists are looking to come in third, with roughly 12 percent.

With more than 90 percent of votes counted, the Fidesz party is expected to take 134 seats out of the parliament’s 199. The far-right Jobbik party will secure roughly 26 seats.

Following Orban’s victory speech, Jobbik’s leader, Gabor Vona, announced that he will resign following his party’s defeat. “Once again Fidesz has sadly won,” he told his supporters on Sunday night, according to the Guardian.

The prime minister’s campaign has been centered on anti-immigration policies. “High turnout has cast aside all doubts,” Orban noted on Sunday night, after election officials announced a 68 percent poll attendance of some 8.3 million eligible voters.

  • Elizabeth Swaney competed in the ladies’ ski halfpipe on Monday despite being unable to land any real tricks.
  • Swaney qualified for the Olympics through a loophole of sorts — athletes were required a number of top-30 finishes, so she would enter competitions with less than 30 athletes in the field, thus assuring the requirement would be met.
  • Swaney knows she isn’t on the same level as the top athletes in the competition, but hopes her Olympic campaign will inspire others to take up the sport.

Elizabeth Swaney can’t land a trick beyond a simple 180 in the halfpipe, but that didn’t stop her from becoming an Olympic athlete.

On Monday, Swaney competed in the ladies’ ski halfpipe, coming in last place with a high score of 31.4 after two runs down the halfpipe.

‘Refugee quotas are nonsense’: Poland, Hungary & Czech Republic ready to fight Brussels in court https://briefnews.eu/refugee-quotas-are-nonsense-poland-hungary-czech-republic-ready-to-fight-brussels-in-court/ https://briefnews.eu/refugee-quotas-are-nonsense-poland-hungary-czech-republic-ready-to-fight-brussels-in-court/#respond Fri, 08 Dec 2017 02:14:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/refugee-quotas-are-nonsense-poland-hungary-czech-republic-ready-to-fight-brussels-in-court/ Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic have defended their sovereign “right” to reject EU-imposed refugee quotas after the European Commission referred the “breach of their legal obligations” to the European Court of Justice.

The EU introduced migrant quotas in September 2015. It was conceived as a temporary emergency scheme to relocate some 160,000 refugees across the bloc’s 28 member-states, in order to help Greece and Italy who were suffocating from a refugee influx. At the time, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia voted against the relocation mechanism, with Budapest and Prague refusing outright to accept the EU-mandated number of refugees. Poland also declined to take in its share of immigrant quotas.

“Hungary has not taken any action at all since the relocation scheme started, Poland has not relocated anyone and not pledged since December 2015. The Czech Republic has not relocated anyone since August 2016 and not made any new pledges for over a year,” the European Commission (EC) said in a statement.

Despite repeated EU Commission warnings and pressure, the dissenting trio continue to pursue a course of non-compliance, arguing that migrants pose a direct threat to their public security. On Thursday, Brussels rejected these concerns and decided to sue the troublesome threesome over the “breach of their legal obligations.”

“The replies received were again found not satisfactory and three countries have given no indication that they will contribute to the implementation of the relocation decision. This is why, the Commission has decided to move to the next stage of the infringement procedure and refer the three Member States to the Court of Justice of the EU,” the commission’s statement said.

Speaking to the press, the EC’s deputy chair, Frans Timmermans, noted that Poland, Hungary and Czech Republic can still resolve the situation out of court if Brussels sees a change of attitude on the part of these countries. All three Eastern European countries, however, said they would rather fight Brussels in court.

“Poland is ready to defend its position in the Court,” Reuters quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Konrad Szymanski as saying. “No one will lift the duty of providing public safety from the Polish government.”

Meanwhile, Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Blaszczak accused Islamic migrant communities in Europe of serving as fertile grounds for terrorists. “Experience shows that the [migrant] relocation system has not worked. It is a system that poses a threat. It degrades states, entire cities, city districts because the communities that are flowing into Europe not only do not integrate with Europeans, but form a hinterland for Islamic terrorists,” Blaszczak noted.

The office of Czech President, Milos Zeman, reiterated its long standing position that quotas represent interference in the country’s internal affairs. The new Prime Minister, Andrej Babis, said he wants to hold negotiations with the EC to withdraw from the mechanism, claiming that “quotas are nonsense and only encourage the popularity of extremist parties in Europe.”

Reacting to the ECʼs latest decision at a news conference in Brussels, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto called the mandatory resettlement quotas a threat to the nation.

“The Government rejects illegal immigration and mandatory settlement quotas, and will continue to fight for the interests and security of the Hungarian people,” Szijjarto stressed, claiming that Budapest’s interests are different from Brussels’.

“Our thoughts with regard to the nation, respecting traditions, border protection and security are totally different,” he said. The EU “is facing the most serious threat of terrorism ever,” and Hungary is already contributing to the wider security of the bloc, he added.

The refugee relocation scheme has been mostly unsuccessful. Only around 32,000 refugees had been relocated as part of the program, which initially set a target of 160,000 migrants. The continued disagreement over the refugee quota scheme will be addressed during EU leaders summit in Brussels on December 14-15.

“Let me very clear; this issue will be with us for at least another generation if not two. So anybody who thinks that a short-term crisis is over, the issue of migration can sort of fade into the background, they are mistaken,” Timmermans said Thursday. “We now need to move from ad hoc crisis response to structural solutions that can provide a safety net to any EU country that is acutely exposed to very high migration pressures.”

Soros waging ‘frontal assault’ on Hungary – ruling party deputy chairman https://briefnews.eu/soros-waging-frontal-assault-on-hungary-ruling-party-deputy-chairman/ https://briefnews.eu/soros-waging-frontal-assault-on-hungary-ruling-party-deputy-chairman/#respond Mon, 20 Nov 2017 23:25:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/soros-waging-frontal-assault-on-hungary-ruling-party-deputy-chairman/

Hungary is facing a frontal assault from US financier George Soros, the vice-chairman of the ruling Fidesz party has said, after the billionaire released a statement accusing the Hungarian government of “lying” about his agenda.

Fidesz vice-chairman Gergely Gulyas pushed back against Soros’ claims that his government was spreading disinformation, and denied that it was stoking anti-Muslim sentiments and embracing anti-Semitic stereotypes. Instead, Gulyas accused Soros of attacking his country through his NGOs and EU bureaucrats, and using them to push a pro-migrant agenda.

“What Soros writes about immigration, in general, is a pro-immigration stance that is open about its disdain for the nation state,” Reuters quoted Gulyas as telling news conference on Monday. “Decisions made in Brussels echo that in the field of immigration policy.”

“Days before a recent immigration decision in the European Parliament, Soros was meeting with the rapporteur on the subject as well as five different EU commissioners. I am not a conspiracy theorist, but this holds some clues.”

On Monday, George Soros released a statement in response to seven allegations the Hungarian government made against him in their National Consultation survey on the “Soros plan.” The statement attempted to offer a rebuttal to those claims, for example that Soros wants to resettle 1 million refugees throughout Europe each year. The statement countered that in 2016, Soros acknowledged that circumstances had changed and that instead, the EU should make a “commitment to admit even a mere 300,000 refugees annually.”

The statement also dismissed claims that Soros wants to undermine European culture, launch attacks on countries which oppose immigration and called for migrants to receive reduced sentences for their crimes, as lies.

The conservative Hungarian government, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, has made no secret of its disdain for George Soros and his political activities, accusing him of undermining European borders and values by helping facilitate the flow of refugees and asylum seekers from the Middle East and Africa. In May, Soros accused Hungary of being a “mafia state,” words that Orban considered a “declaration of war.”
