The semi-trailer truck involved in the Humboldt Broncos team bus crash was travelling at nearly 100 km/h at the moment of impact, and the semi's driver isn't thought to have been distracted, according to a document obtained by CBC News.

The document has not yet been presented to the court.

"No tire skid marks due to braking were left by the semi-tractor unit," reads a statement of facts agreed to by the Crown and defence in the court case of semi driver Jaskirat Singh Sidhu.

It says Sidhu simply "failed to recognize that his vehicle was approaching an intersection and did not heed the stop sign."

In Melfort, Sask., provincial court Tuesday morning, Sidhu pleaded guilty to 16 counts of dangerous driving causing death and 13 counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

On April 6, 2018, the truck Sidhu was driving collided with the Humboldt Broncos' tour bus while the team was travelling to a playoff game in Nipawin, Sask. Sixteen people died and 13 were injured in the crash.

Stop sign 1.2 metres wide

CBC News obtained the five-page statement, based largely on the RCMP "Forensic Collision Reconstruction Report" following the brief but emotional hearing.

It states Sidhu drove into the intersection at a speed of 86 to 96 km/h. This was despite a 1.2-metre-wide (four feet) stop sign with a red flashing light on top, as well as clearly marked highway signs warning of an intersection from approximately 400 metres, 300 metres, 200 metres and 100 metres away.

As Sidhu approached the intersection on Highway 335, the driver of the Broncos bus travelling down the larger Highway 35 recognized the danger, according to the statement.

The bus driver applied the brakes and skidded for 24 metres before the collision, it stated.

"The driver of the bus did not contribute to the collision," it stated. "The actions of Mr. Sidhu while operating the semi-tractor unit caused the collision."

The bus "T-boned" the semi, sending it into the ditch.

Alcohol, drugs, cellphone not factors

According to the statement, there were no environmental factors causing the crash such as sun glare or weather conditions. The nearby trees did not obstruct the view and were "inconsequential," it stated.

The document notes alcohol and drugs were not a factor. Sidhu was also not distracted by cellphone use.

Jaskirat Singh Sidhu's lawyer Mark Brayford read a prepared statement outside Melfort provincial court. He said his client just wanted to 'plead guilty.' 1:10

Outside the court, Sidhu's lawyer read a prepared statement, saying his client feels terrible and is very sorry.

"His position to me was, 'I just want to plead guilty,'" said lawyer Mark Brayford.

"Mr. Sidhu advised me, 'I don't want to make things any worse.'"

Sentencing begins Jan. 28

The lawyer went on, stating that Sidhu is devastated by the grief he's caused the families.

"He's overwhelmed by the expressions of sympathy and kindness that some of the families and players have expressed to him, in spite of the fact that their grief is entirely his fault."

Judge Inez Cardinal said sentencing is scheduled to begin Jan. 28 in Melfort and will likely take three to five days to complete, due to the number of victim impact statements expected to be entered. Security screenings will be in place for everyone entering the building.

Scott Thomas lost his son Evan in the highway crash between a semi-trailer and the Humboldt Broncos team bus. 0:25

Tom Straschnitzki, bus crash survivor Ryan Straschnitzki's father, was relieved the case won't go to trial.

"He didn't set out that day to do this," Straschnitzki said. His son Ryan was paralyzed from the chest down in the crash.

"By him pleading guilty to save of us all from the trial shows a lot of remorse, because he also has to live with this for the rest of his life too."

Scott Thomas, father of crash victim and Humboldt Bronco player Evan Thomas, was relieved Sidhu pleaded guilty.

"It means a lot," he said. "To hear him use his own words to plead guilty was powerful."

Thomas has been present for many of Sidhu's court dates. On Tuesday, Thomas sat close to him in the courtroom.

"I felt him … no question," he said. "To be that close, my heart rate went up for sure."

Thomas said he wasn't concerned about the length of Sidhu's sentence.

Heart-wrenching

"If he spends 10 years, [that] time is irrelevant. He was guilty, and he acknowledged that."

Thomas would also like to see a permanent memorial set up at the crash site. Since the collision, many people have laid wreaths and other memorials at the site.

"Whatever they build there will be impressive and heart-wrenching," he said.

"I think it's going to be a place where people stop for eternity, because it's hallowed ground. Sixteen people were wiped off the face of the earth."

In a statement, the Humboldt Broncos hockey team said it was relieved Sidhu pleaded guilty and there would be no trial.

"I commend Mr. Sidhu for taking responsibility for his actions and sparing the survivors and the families the anguish and turmoil of rehashing this tragedy in court," said team president Jamie Brockman.

Rumble strips

The maximum punishment for the crimes is 14 years on each count of dangerous driving causing death and 10 years for each count of dangerous driving causing injury.

The crash occurred at the intersection of two busy highways. The Saskatchewan government has since pledged to install rumble strips, lights, signs and road markers in the area.

The accident made international headlines, and support for the junior hockey team poured in from around the world. A GoFundMe campaign raised $ 15 million that was eventually divided between victims and their families.

Sukhmander Singh, owner and director of Adesh Deol Trucking Ltd. and Sidhu's employer at the time of the crash, faces eight counts of failing to comply with various safety and log-keeping regulations.

Sidhu, who was not hurt, was released on $ 1,000 bail in July under conditions that he not drive and that he surrender his passport.

'We became a stronger family': Supporters rally as Humboldt Broncos take ice for home opener https://briefnews.eu/we-became-a-stronger-family-supporters-rally-as-humboldt-broncos-take-ice-for-home-opener/ https://briefnews.eu/we-became-a-stronger-family-supporters-rally-as-humboldt-broncos-take-ice-for-home-opener/#respond Wed, 12 Sep 2018 16:23:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-became-a-stronger-family-supporters-rally-as-humboldt-broncos-take-ice-for-home-opener/ The new Humboldt Broncos will be surrounded by support when they take home ice on Wednesday for their first regular season game since the bus crash in the spring.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team were on their way to Nipawin, Sask., for a playoff game on April 6 when their bus was struck by a semi.

The crash killed 16 people including players, team staff and members of the media.

The team spent the summer rebuilding and recruiting new players. They will face off against the Nipawin Hawks at the Elgar Petersen Arena at 6:30 p.m. CST.

Spike in mental health needs

Executive director with Partners Family Services Hayley Kennedy said a mental health support team will be at the rink.

For the players, the home opener is surrounded by pressure, expectations and nervousness, Kennedy said.

During this fiscal year, which started in July, the organization has seen a 20 per cent increase in people seeking mental health support in Humboldt.

Kennedy said in the last five months, people in the community have each been grieving the crash very differently.

"That can be really challenging, especially if your own timeline, or how things look for you, isn't what you'd expect from your neighbour," she said. "We are fortunate as a community that there has been a ton of support for us locally, provincially and from across Canada.

"That certainly has made a difference to know that we have such strong support."

Kennedy said she expects the game to be a step in the right direction for the community as a whole.

"Some of those pieces of finding our normal I think are really important," she said. "The ability to come back to this arena on a Friday or Saturday night and sit in their regular seats again, that definitely has a healing piece to it.

"It will be emotional and some of it will be difficult but…it will be healing for the heart."

Someone to confide in

Mark Popovic is the skills and development coach for the Broncos. Popovic said his role, which is typically reserved for NHL teams, will not act as an authority figure for the players, but more of a confidant.

"Ìt can be a little bit of a lonely world in junior hockey. Most of these players are living away from home, they're living with host families," Popovic said. "It's nice to have someone you can trust and open up to and who's been there before.

"One of the reasons I started doing this stuff was because when I was in junior hockey it was something I really needed as a player and a person, somebody to confide in, to talk hockey, to talk life, outside of your parents and the coaches."

Mark Popovic, skills and development coach for the Broncos, says he wants to be there for players both on and off the ice. (CBC News)

Popovic, who played professional hockey, will also be on the ice to help along with the other coaches.

"We're all working together to support these players in any way they need it," he said.

Healing together

Cory Popoff, Humboldt Collegiate Institute principal, said the new school year has offered a new beginning for students.

"I can tell everyday we're moving closer to being OK. We're starting to laugh a little more. We're starting to have more fun," he said. "It's tremendous to see. We've definitely turned a corner in that regard."

Last year, students were offered support from personal counselors and mental health counselors from the community, school division, health region and surrounding areas.

There is also an in-house counsellor at the high school.

Similar supports were extended to school staff.

Cory Popoff, Humboldt Collegiate Institute principal, said the community is taking the next step toward healing. (CBC News)

"Acknowledging the tragedy I think was one of the toughest things we've had to do as a staff and as students," he said. "One of two things can happen as a result of a tragedy like this, you either break up or you become a stronger family.

"We became a stronger family."

Popoff said the teachers have been diligent when it comes to keeping tabs on students.

"We're able to find out almost immediately if a student is struggling and is outside their normal behaviour," he said.

Popoff is a Broncos season ticket holder and said he will be attending the home opener. He said he expects to see many of his students at the sold out game.

"Our community is very good at supporting our Broncos through thick and thin, through good times and bad," he said.

"I can't wait to watch some Bronco hockey."

Surviving members of the Humboldt Broncos were honoured at the National Hockey League's awards night in Las Vegas, accepting the inaugural Willie O'Ree Community Hero Award on behalf of their late head coach, Darcy Haugan.

Haugan was one of 16 people killed when the team's bus collided with a truck while en route to a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoff game on April 6.

Surviving members of the Humboldt Broncos were reunited for the first time at the NHL awards in Las Vegas on Wednesday. 2:48

Haugan's widow, Christina, accepted the award and said her husband's legacy could not be found in the statistics, but in the many players he coached.

Hockey Night in Canada's Scott Oake and Elliotte Friedman introduced each player as they came up on stage to a standing ovation.

Haugan was remembered for telling his players "it's a great day to be a Bronco" before each game. The O'Ree award, named for the NHL's first black player, is presented to an individual who, through hockey, has positively impacted his or her community, culture or society.

"We can cry together, we can laugh together, we can do everything together and just kind of heal in our own way," said Tyler Smith, who suffered nerve damage and significant injuries to his left side, including a broken collarbone and shoulder blade. "It's a blessing to be able to be here together. We're all going to be Broncos forever, and no matter what day it is, it's a great day to be a Bronco."

Haugan is the first recipient of the Willie O'Ree community hero award. His wife, Christina Haugan, accepted the award on his behalf. 4:53

Victims and first responders from October's mass shooting in Las Vegas that killed 58 people and injured dozens more just over a week before the Golden Knights played their first-ever regular-season home game were also honoured.

And members of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School hockey team, which won the Florida state title shortly after a gunman killed 17 people there on Feb. 14, also attended the event. Stoneman Douglas is located in Parkland, some 20 kilometres from the Panthers' arena.

"The hockey family across the whole world, I'm very thankful for it. It's something you don't really expect," said Broncos alternate captain Kaleb Dahlgren, who suffered skull and spinal fractures. "You grow up with these people in your life and you consider them family. You're with them every day and so hockey is a family community. The support we've received from everybody has been very, very, very generous and we're all thankful for that. It makes the healing process easier."

Stanley Cup coming to Humboldt

The NHL and NHLPA hope to continue the healing on Aug. 24, when Washington Capitals forward Chandler Stephenson, a Saskatoon native, will bring the Stanley Cup to Elgar Petersen Arena in Humboldt, as part of an on-ice event that will include an on-ice skills competition between NHL players.

"I got the opportunity to meet the Broncos yesterday and their fighting spirit rubs off on you," said Tampa Bay Lightning Victor Hedman, who was awarded with the Norris Trophy as the top defenceman. "After those tragedies, the hockey community shows that everyone is together. This is more than just a game, we are family.

"It's such a special place, too, in Vegas. What they went through in October and the way this community rallied together with the hockey team, and the way the performed I think it's important for me to acknowledge that."

Golden Knights William Karlsson and Deryk Engelland, coach Gerard Gallant and the team's general manager George McPhee —— all four of whom won awards — joined the first responders and survivors honoured on stage midway through the show.

Engelland, Hall acknowledge tragedies

Engelland, who took home the Mark Messier Leadership Award, said the touching and now infamous "We Are Vegas Strong" speech he delivered before the Golden Knights' home opener will always be one of the biggest moments of his hockey career.

"Once I knew I was doing it, that's pretty much all that was going through my head for about four or five days, so I didn't want to screw that up," Engelland said. "It got us embedded in the community and the community embedded in us. Guys really took it upon themselves to keep winning for the people that were affected and the city. The excitement after every goal during every game really lifted every guy in our locker room."

New Jersey Devils forward Taylor Hall, who was awarded the Hart Trophy as the league's MVP, said he was touched by all three ceremonies that recognized the tragedies that took place during the season.

"Three terrible tragedies, three things that should never happen, we should never have to go through as a society," Hall said. "As a community, as a hockey community, you try and help everyone around you, you try and rally and just be a kind person to one another and hopefully that makes someone feel better."

When word of the Humboldt Broncos bus accident reached Jinja, Uganda, there was profound sadness at the St. James Orthopedic Clinic and among the young patients it has helped over the past five years. The clinic is a partner with One4Another International, a Canadian-based charity that helps children with birth defects or injuries get on their feet.

Torontonians honour Humboldt community with Jersey Day tribute https://briefnews.eu/torontonians-honour-humboldt-community-with-jersey-day-tribute/ https://briefnews.eu/torontonians-honour-humboldt-community-with-jersey-day-tribute/#respond Thu, 12 Apr 2018 20:18:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/torontonians-honour-humboldt-community-with-jersey-day-tribute/

Factory workers, bus drivers and Mayor John Tory were among thousands of Torontonians who donned jerseys Thursday to show their support for the community of Humboldt, Saskatchewan.

It was last Friday evening when a bus carrying the Humboldt junior A Broncos hockey team collided with a truck in rural Saskatchewan, killing 16 players and staff.

The tragedy has resonated deeply with Canadians.  A record amount of money has been raised for those affected. And as a tribute, countless households and businesses placed hockey sticks outside their front doors.

Now the Jerseys for Humboldt campaign is another way for Canadians to show their support for a reeling Saskatchewan community.

The idea actually started thousands of kilometres away from the accident, in Langley, B.C.

“This tragedy is so unfathomably huge that no one person can do anything but as a group we wanted to contribute something,” said Jennifer Pinch, one of the organizers of this campaign.

“I think everyone just wants to give something. It’s the least we can do. I wish I could take their pain and put it on my shoulders for a day for them.”

The idea started off small.

“It started off as let’s take a picture of our sons in their jerseys and send it to the moms in Saskatchewan to let them know we were thinking of them and that would be it,” explained Pinch.

“And then it was why don’t we get Langley minor hockey involved. Then why not schools across B.C. Then the Facebook page went up and it really just took off.”

It certainly did. Under the Twitter hashtag #jerseysforhumboldt, there are thousands of pictures of people wearing jerseys, posted from across the country.

“Just something to let that team know they are not alone. People are behind them because anybody could have been that team, God forbid, in the future.”

Popular idea

The idea was certainly popular in Canada’s biggest city, especially in Toronto schools, where thousands of students wore jerseys for Humboldt.

At Hillcrest Community School in midtown Toronto, a wide array of jerseys and colours were on display.

Many, like Grade 6 student Logan Kennedy decided to wear something special.

“I am wearing my Mississauga Reps jersey. I think it shows them more support than wearing a regular jersey,” he said.

Kennedy, who plays competitive hockey, said he’s been thinking a lot about what happened in Humboldt.

“I thought it was so sad what happened in Humboldt and eye-opening too. Just how you could be going somewhere and feeling so happy and then things vanish just like that and you can have nothing.”

Kennedy’s classmate Sabine Therrien wore her Hillcrest softball jersey.

“I hope to send the message that even though they are not with us anymore that they will live and everyone is thinking of them.”

There were plenty of Leaf jerseys, of course, including on worn by Suleimaan Omar.

“I was really sad because hockey is my favourite sport and lots of people I know play. They were doing something they really liked and then an accident happened.”

Their teacher, Ahren Sternberg, who coaches many of the school’s teams, said this accident has struck a chord among his students.

“Anyone here could have been on that bus. These guys play sports they travel, it could be anyone and that thought alone is something that really hit home,” said Sternberg. “And if wearing jerseys gets us thinking and talking about it, it’s not a bad thing.”

Pinch said it’s likely the families and community in Humboldt are looking inward right now, dealing with a tragedy that is still very raw.

“They may not notice this for a month or even a year, but they will know that in their dark, dark time, there was a worldwide community supporting them and it will be nice to know that they weren`t alone as they probably feel right now.”

Humboldt Broncos bus crash claims 16th victim, as athletic therapist dies in hospital https://briefnews.eu/humboldt-broncos-bus-crash-claims-16th-victim-as-athletic-therapist-dies-in-hospital/ https://briefnews.eu/humboldt-broncos-bus-crash-claims-16th-victim-as-athletic-therapist-dies-in-hospital/#respond Wed, 11 Apr 2018 23:25:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/humboldt-broncos-bus-crash-claims-16th-victim-as-athletic-therapist-dies-in-hospital/

Dayna Brons, the lone woman aboard the Humboldt Broncos’ team bus when it collided with a transport truck on April 6, has died.

Family and friends had been waiting anxiously, hoping the 25-year-old athletic therapist would pull through after she suffered serious head trauma, relative Dale Brons told The Canadian Press on Tuesday.

At that time, he said she had undergone two surgeries, and was on a breathing apparatus.

However, on Wednesday afternoon, her family confirmed in a statement that she had died peacefully.

“She was surrounded by those she loved and those who loved her,” the statement said. “Dayna will be forever remembered for her joyful smile, and her passion and love of sport.”

Over the last few days, lacrosse and soccer teams that Brons had worked with had offered their support for the keen, happy trainer on social media. So did Canadian women’s hockey star Hayley Wickenheiser, an Olympian.

“‘The only girl on the boys team’ … Dayna I’ve been thinking of you a lot! Praying you pull through,” she wrote.

Brons was originally from Lake Lenore, Sask., about 30 kilometres northeast of Humboldt, and had gone to school at the University of Regina, getting a degree in kinesiology and health studies.

“I grew up playing different sports, I really loved to play the game and I just loved being active, so it was suggested to me to be an athletic therapist,” she said in an interview in 2016, following her hiring by the Broncos.

Brons recalled having grown up watching the team, and having a place to land when she got back, adding there was “no problem at all for me to come back home.”

On Friday night, she was travelling on a bus with the team for Game 5 in a semifinal series between the Humboldt Broncos and the Nipawin Hawks when it collided with a tractor-trailer. Fifteen people were declared dead in the aftermath, and another 14 — including Brons — were injured.

Her family said Brons had been “extremely proud” to be part of the Broncos’ family.

They offered their thanks to the people who cared for Brons, as well as “everyone across Saskatchewan and Canada for their love and prayers during this very difficult time.”
