A synthetic media artist named Jason Allen entered AI-generated artwork into the Colorado State Fair fine arts competition and announced last week that he won first place in the Digital Arts/Digitally Manipulated Photography category, Vice reported Wednesday based on a viral tweet.

Allen used Midjourney—a commercial image synthesis model available through a Discord server—to create a series of three images. He then upscaled them, printed them on canvas, and submitted them to the competition in early August. To his delight, one of the images (titled Théåtre D’opéra Spatial) captured the top prize, and he posted about his victory on the Midjourney Discord server on Friday.

Allen’s victory prompted lively discussions on Twitter, Reddit, and the Midjourney Discord server about the nature of art and what it means to be an artist. Some commenters think human artistry is doomed thanks to AI and that all artists are destined to be replaced by machines. Others think art will evolve and adapt with new technologies that come along, citing synthesizers in music. It’s a hot debate that Wired covered in July.

Westeros’ history book is filling up fast: HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel pilot has added a slew of actors and a noted director to its ranks, TVLine has learned.

The still-untitled project, which is set a long while before the events of the original series, has recruited Toby Regbo (Reign), Ivanno Jeremiah (Humans) and Georgie Henley (The Chronicles of Narnia films) as series regulars.

Also joining the cast as series regulars are: Naomi Ackie (the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX), Denise Gough (The Fall), Jamie Campbell Bower (Will), Sheila Atim (Harlots) and Alex Sharp (Broadway’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time).

No character details are available.

In addition, director SJ Clarkson (Dexter, Bates Motel, The Defenders) has been brought on to helm the pilot. She’ll also be an executive producer.

The potential offshoot takes place thousands of years before the exploits of Daenerys & Co. and, per the official logline, “chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.” Oh, and everything we’ve been told about Thrones lore isn’t necessarily “the story we think we know,” the synopsis promises.

HBO ordered the prequel pilot in June 2018, based on a story by X-Men: First Class‘ Jane Goldman and Thrones author George R.R. Martin; Goldman will serve as showrunner.

The most recent additions join previously announced cast members Naomi Watts (Gypsy), who’ll play a charming socialite with a dark secret, and Josh Whitehouse (Poldark).

The bubonic plague years and the breakout of two World Wars were terrible times. But these were not the worst periods to be alive, scientists claim in new research.

It’s the year 536. The 6th century year is thought to have been the beginning of bizarrely cold and dark summers, blamed for causing crop failure in Ireland, Scandinavia and China. Amazingly, the unusual weather was perhaps caused by volcanic material such as ash blocking out parts of the sun and wreaking havoc with the environment.

“It was the beginning of one of the worst periods to be alive, if not the worst year,” medieval historian Michael McCormick, of the Harvard University,  told Science Magazine. His Antiquity study suggests the reason for the onset of the ‘Dark Age’ literally and metaphorically was a volcanic eruption.

Evidence of volcanic material dating back to 536 was found in sample ice cores taken from the Colle Gnifetti glacier on the Swiss-Italian border. While scientists are unsure of the origin of the tephra – its thought it could have come via winds from North America or Iceland – the findings point to drastic cooling resulting in famine and a decline in human fortunes.

The bizarre weather is reported to have continued for decades, with researchers now said to be continuing their search for the volcano that may have helped bring about the Dark Ages.

While the study paints a gloomy picture, the same ice glacier also tells of a respite for Europeans, at least during the 600s. Lead levels around 640 indicate an upturn in the economy through the smelting of silver coins, according to the study, authored by Michael McCormick and Christopher Loveluck.

While it’s frequently impractical to leave a conventional car running to cool your dog or host a tailgate party, an EV can do that for hours at a time without flinching. It might take widespread EV adoption before you can leave your pooch alone without needing a mode like this.

Google has delivered further evidence that AI could become a valuable ally in detecting cancer. The company’s researchers have developed a deep learning tool that can spot metastatic (advanced) breast cancer with a greater accuracy than pathologists when looking at slides. The team trained its algorithm (Lymph Node Assistant, aka LYNA) to recognize the characteristics of tumors using two sets of pathological slides, giving it the ability to spot metastasis in a wide variety of conditions. The result was an AI system that could tell the difference between cancer and non-cancer slides 99 percent of the time, even when looking for extremely small metastases that humans might miss.

LYNA was even more effective when serving as a companion — pathologists performing simulated diagnoses found that the deep learning tech made their work easier. It not only reduced the rate of missed micro-metastases by a “factor of two,” it cut the inspection time in half to a single minute.

This immediate approach would only have so much effectiveness in the field, since it would be looking for late-stage breast cancer where there’s no known solution. It also has yet to be used in real-life clinical situations. However, the scientists note that metastasis is a common factor in most forms of cancer. It wouldn’t take much to adapt the system to look for other tumors. If and when it’s ready for practical use, though, it could both lead to extremely reliable diagnoses and free doctors to focus more of their time on caring for their patients.

The Good Place‘s Michael and Janet are now back on Earth, and stripped of their supernatural powers. So how can they keep an eye on Eleanor and company?

We get our answer in TVLine’s exclusive sneak peek at Thursday’s episode (NBC, 8:30/7:30c), which finds Michael and Janet hiding out in an abandoned department of Chidi’s university — the journalism department, as it turns out. (“Bad for the world,” Michael notes. “Good for us!”) Michael says they need to keep Eleanor, Chidi, Jason and Tahani together and also keep track of their ethical progress, but without Janet’s powers or the afterlife ticker, he’s stumped as to how exactly to proceed.

Janet, as usual, has the answer: She went ahead and installed cameras and microphones in Chidi’s study room, so they can monitor everything the humans do and say. Hmmm… maybe not the most ethically advisable decision, strictly speaking, but Janet is excited about invading their privacy. “Let’s get peepin’!” she exclaims.

Elsewhere in Thursday’s episode, titled “The Snowplow,” “a surprising announcement from the humans threatens to dissolve the group,” per the official description. Uh-oh.
