A video has emerged on Twitter showing a faceless, but worryingly realistic humanoid robot walk in what looks like a perfectly mundane courtyard. The trip down the uncanny valley caused some users to proclaim impending apocalypse.

The clip shows the stoop-backed robot whirr its way past the cameraman, with ominous music playing in the background. Its black and orange limbs, hi-tech-looking protrusions along its spine and its hollowed out head all lend to the realism, bringing to mind Boston Dynamics’ latest scary creations. But then the camera zooms in on its face plate, and that’s where you might feel a slight urge to scream and run, because set in the near-featureless white mask are two moving, human-like eyes.

Naturally, some users’ reaction was “WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE.”

Others launched a salvo of Terminator references.

Still others were not as impressed by seeing their new robot overlord, instead admonishing it for its unhealthy posture.

It all ultimately turned out to be a false alarm: the mechanical monstrosity is just masterfully-done embedded CGI, one of the robots digitally created for ADAM, a series of post-apocalyptic sci-fi short films by director Neill Blomkamp, whose more widely-known creations are Elysium, District 9 and Chappie. ADAM was created with the Unity game engine and intended to showcase how to make high-quality image relatively on a budget. Blomkamp has already created a script for a longer ADAM movie, and was hoping the short films would help him secure funding.

Olympic athletes are shaking in their boots: Engineers have released a somewhat disconcerting video showing Boston Dynamics’ Atlas robot effortlessly jumping over obstacles and doing a backflip while performing an impressive gymnastics routine.

The new video shows the Atlas robot, which is six feet nine inches tall (over 2 meters) and weighs 167 pounds (75 kg), casually jumping between platforms, turning around, and nailing a perfect backflip.

A real breakthrough comes when the humanoid is seen back-flipping off a block, and raising both arms to stick the landing. It’s not clear, however, how many takes the agile robot needed to perfect the feat.

Blooper footage at the end shows the tireless metal athlete failing to complete the landing, tumbling over a large box after one of its backflip attempts.

The robotics firm made waves earlier this week after unveiling the newest version of its dog-like SpotMini robot. The electric-powered 30kg robot is armed with a set of 3D-vision cameras to avoid getting into trouble.

The Disney Enterprises group filed a US patent in February that hints at a possible future for its theme parks: humanoid robots designed for maximum hugging efficiency.

The patent, which was first reported by the Orlando Sentinel, has a suitably warm and fuzzy name: “Soft body robot for physical interaction with humans.” It describes mostly rigid robots, with the exception of “fluid-filled voids,” “flexible membranes,” and “pressure sensors,” and these would all work in tandem to guide the robots’ joint motion. Ideally, this would result in “a soft, modular robot that is huggable and interactive.”

According to the filing, Disney’s inventors have already tested prototypes of this hugging robot with children, and in those tests, “the robot was robust to playful, physical interaction.” (We assume that is science-speak for “nobody was hugged to death.”)

NASA’s Robonauts are being put to the test in Mars-like obstacle courses in order to pave the way for future humanoid space exploration and help bridge the expansive gap between Earth and human colonization of the red planet.

NASA built four six-foot, 290-pound, Iron man-like pieces of machinery named Valkyrie, at the cost of about $ 2 million each, and then outsourced three of them to universities to test the robot’s capabilities in various hostile environments.

In 2015 Northeastern University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Scotland’s University of Edinburgh were all chosen in open competition and assigned the task of challenging and refining the robotic technology in the hope of creating a future robot capable of withstanding the Martian planet.

Northeastern tested their model at the New England Robotics Validation and Experimentation (NERVE) Center — a warehouse filled with large and challenging obstacle courses designed to test robots and drones alike.

It’s in this kind of environment that robotics and engineering students put Valkyrie’s skills to the test and have further developed its “high-level capabilities”.

“She can autonomously make decisions, move around and accomplish tasks,” said Northeastern PhD student, Murphy Wonsick to TechCrunch.

In theory, the successors to these Robonauts would help facilitate the colonization of Mars by building the necessities humans need before their arrival and further assisting the astronauts with tasks while on the red planet.

The robot’s ultimate Mars test will take place this summer when 20 teams will compete for a $ 1 million prize in NASA’s Space Robotics Challenge, designed to place Valkyrie in a Martian-like scenario. 

“In the not too distant future, R5 has arrived on Mars along with supplies ahead of a human mission. Overnight a dust storm damaged the habitat and solar array, and caused the primary communication antenna to become misaligned,” the agency’s simulated event suggests.

The robot must repair the damage, deploy a new solar panel and align the communication antenna to complete the challenge.
