The Rhinos endured a relegation fight during a nightmare 2016 campaign but they have showed signs of their old selves this season and another title would complete their resurrection.

Hull retained the Challenge Cup last month but they have not won at Headingley for a decade and their only Grand Final appearance came in 2006 when they lost to St Helens.

Legendary Leeds duo Danny McGuire and Rob Burrow made their final appearances on home soil last night and will now aim for a glorious last hurrah at the Theatre of Dreams next weekend.

Captain McGuire was making his 450th career outing ahead of an end-of-season move to Hull KR, while Burrow is retiring and joining the Rhinos’ backroom staff.

The pair have contributed more than most in making Leeds the dominant force of the Super League era and were given a guard of honour before kick-off.

An emotionally fraught Leeds boss Brian McDermott said: “The job is not because if we don’t next week it will be hurt.

“But I think it’s a huge achievement from the players after all the ridicule they’ve had. To get to the Grand Final is big.”

There was the added sub-plot of retiring Hull veteran Gareth Ellis, who won two Grand Finals with Leeds in 2007 and 2008 and will now bring down the curtain on his own distinguished career.

Homegrown second-rower Stevie Ward drove through the heart of the Hull defence and stretched out an arm to put Leeds in front before McGuire produced some of his old magic to dart past a visiting defender and usher prop Anthony Mullally over from close range.

Hull finally got off the mark when Ellis took Danny Houghton’s pass and crashed over the line.

Having largely dominated the opening 40 minutes, a 12-6 interval lead was scant reward for Leeds.

Hull responded five minutes after the restart when a delightful handling sequence culminated in Jake Connor sending Mahe Fonua over in the right corner.

Marc Sneyd failed to convert the try and gradually the momentum swung back in Leeds’ favour.

In the 54th minute, Cumbrian prop Brad Singleton collected possession from McGuire and embarked on a marauding diagonal run which took him over in the left corner, only for it to be disallowed.

Moments later, Hull advanced upfield and forged ahead when Sneyd’s high kick was fielded by Connor into the path of Sika Manu, who touched down from close range.

Sneyd’s conversion made it 16-12 to Hull but Liam Sutcliffe showed outstanding pace and strength to scythe through the visiting defence inside the left channel in the 62nd minute to make it 16-16.

Kallum Watkins kicked his third conversion to put Leeds back in front and give them a slender but precious advantage they did not surrender.

Hull boss Lee Radford said: “We just fell short unfortunately and we got beat by the better team but I cannot fault the effort of my players.

“We went down swinging but we just weren’t smart enough in the last ten minutes.

“You could hear a pin drop in the changing room afterwards. There is some soul-searching going on in there now.”

Silva did an impressive job at Hull after taking the job in January and came close to keeping them up with six wins but they were relegated after the penultimate game of the season.

Hull lost to Crystal Palace to seal their fate and ended up six points adrift.

And Silva was said to have travelled to Portugal earlier this week for talks with Porto but is now back in England after they broke down.

Express Sport understands Crystal Palace are keen on bringing him to Selhurst Park after the shock departure of Sam Allardyce.

However Watford are also interested following Walter Mazzarri’s sacking. Southampton also held a tentative interest with Claude Puel coming under pressure despite finishing eighth and guiding Saints to the EFL Cup final.

Hull are expected to make a statement on Silva’s departure this afternoon.

The Hull boss has a release clause in his contract allowing him to remain in the Premier League following their relegation.

And the Hornets have wasted no time in targeting the Portuguese coach following their decision to axe Mazzarri yesterday.

Silva, due to hold talks with his Hull bosses today, could become Watford’s ninth manager in just five years. The 40-year-old fits the profile of the type of forward-thinking coach Watford want. 

Leicester’s Premier League winning boss Claudio Ranieri and fellow Italian Roberto Mancini have been mentioned in the Vicarage Road corridors and are also being considered by trigger-happy owner Gino Pozzo. But Silva is the front-runner.

Despite failing to keep Hull in the top flight, Silva’s impact on and off the pitch has not gone unnoticed.

Mazzarri, less than 12 months into his three-year contract, had been expected to be given another crack at Watford next season. 

It is believed his relationship with his players has deteriorated in recent months. 

Troy Deeney, Watford’s influential skipper, was angered at being dropped three times since March. 

Deeney and team-mate Stefano Okaka were also involved in an angry post-match bust-up after the Monday’s defeat at Chelsea – the 55-year-old’s final game in charge.

His failure to speak English along his unconventional and strict training ground methods have raised eyebrows.

And with results having fallen away following five straight defeats, Watford decided to pull the plug following showdown talks yesterday.

Hornets chairman Scott Duxbury said: “After the board discussed with Walter Mazzarri the club’s future goals and aspirations, it was decided he will be stepping down.

“We thank Walter and his staff for the contribution they have made to Watford Football Club over the past year.”

Mazzarri’s final game in charge will be at home to Manchester City this Sunday.

News that he will not be in charge of Watford next term emerged after it was claimed that a host of key players would quit the club in the summer if the Italian did not leave.

Ranieri, meanwhile, would certainly be no stranger to the Pozzo family owners. He continues to held in high regard following his unexpected Premier League title success with Leicester and his departure is still regarded as unjust by many Foxes fans.

At 65, Ranieri offers both experience and stability, as well as charming the dressing room and keeping an eye on helping move the Hornets up the table.

Mancini had spells at both Galatasaray and Inter Milan after leaving Manchester City in 2013. He would offer instant knowledge of the English top flight, but whether or not he would relish the chance to be fighting for points to get up the league rather than stay ahead of the chasing pack remains open for debate.

The Chained To The Rhythm singer – who parodied Theresa May and Donald Trump at the BRIT Awards – is the latest headliner to be unveiled for the annual bash, which moves to a different location every year.

She joins acts such as Little Mix, Kings of Leon and Stormzy on the ever-growing bill, with the shows taking place on Saturday and Sunday, May 27 and 28.

So how do fans get hold of tickets?

A degree of preference is given every year to those who live in the local area.

50,000 tickets will be given away across the two dates, although actual ticket info will not be published until late March or early April – so fans will have to sit tight for the time being.

Demand will, however, massively exceed supply, and it is expected that tickets will not be available for very long at all.

They are all free, although a non-refundable charge of £8.50 per ticket will be applicable.

There are no registration processes in place, and there is no minimum age – fans just have to be accompanied by an adult if younger than 16.

Last year’s event was headlined by Mumford and Sons and Coldplay, and was held near Exeter.

However there was controversy when Twenty One Pilots had their set cut short due to “safety concerns”.

Norwich, Glasgow and Derry have also played host to the festival in recent years.

Yesterday it was reported that Perry is among the bookies’ tips to be a James Bond star.

But for one man the implications are immense because he could be flying out to Dubai tomorrow with his chances of landing the Leicester manager’s job for keeps.

Well, as long as any manager can have a job for ‘keeps’ these days.  Craig Shakespeare is that man and he’ll head for the Middle East sunshine a happy man if Leicester can make it back-to-back wins today.

Shakespeare is the caretaker boss but he’ll have strong claims to hang on to the reins if his side follow up Monday night’s massive win over Liverpool with another three points.

The King Power owners have an appointment with him when the team returns on Thursday and victory today could force their hand to give him the job if only until the end of the season.
