Mortal Engines unites two of the greatest performers of big (and small) screen villains in modern cinema. Lang terrified and enraged audiences as the vile Colonel in Avatar, while Weaving has disturbed and quietly horrified audiences in the Matrix movies and Patrick Melrose. So, it’s rather a delight to get them cuddling up and even holding hands as we talk about their roles in Peter Jackson’s latest blockbuster. Based on the hit books by Phillip Reeves, Lang plays the reanimated man/monster Shrike with Weaving bring his usual unsettling charm to warmonger Thaddeus Valentine.

I boldly tell Lang how much I hated him in Avatar while Weaving often plays more complex characters who slip in the knife when you’re not looking. Lang smiles: “Oh that hurts. I thought I was charming”

But we soon talk about how his relentless cyborg killer Shrike may actually be the most ‘human’ character of all and Lang adds: “Without a soul but he has as much soul as Aretha.”

Shrike is an incredible figure, initially horrifying but slowly the audience learns his own tragic and heartbreaking past. It is typical of a film that gradually peels back layers to present ever more complex truths.

Scenes of heart-pounding chases, the awe-inspiring spectacle of a steampunk London on wheels or beautiful panoramas of cities in the clouds are mixed with the unsettling aspects of human nature we might sometimes try to ignore.

We can’t avoid the topic of how timely Mortal Engines appears, as humanity gobbles its resources and nations increasingly seem to distrust one another.

A scene where conquered migrants are told their children may be taken away is an unmistakable commentary on the recent events in the US.

Should Hollywood movies be involved in social or moral judgements?

Lang says: “So many films and books preach to the converted. One of things marvellous about this film is that it can have a very wide appeal. There is a lot of social relevance to this catastrophic world we seem to be inhabiting.

“At the same time it’s a hell of a yarn.

“That way you speak to as many people as possible, if you can sucker punch in a message in a subversive way.”

Weaving says: “If you make films you can’t help make comment and reflect the world you live in. If you try to hit a nail too hard over the head, no-one likes that. Anything that is didactic is not art, it’s not interesting. It’s opinionising or ideology. It’s much more interesting to try and express who we are and through that there are all sort of relevant revelations.”

Lang talks about what he loves most about the movie: “It’s inhabited by young people who exhibit courage and resourcefulness and they are dealing with the world as they know it, just as young people today are dealing with the world they are given.

“If you’re looking for a message, sure, it’s one of hope and ‘get it done.’ If you’re not satisfied with the world, change it.”

Theory revealed https://briefnews.eu/is-this-the-reason-why-tottenham-star-hugo-lloris-is-making-blunders-theory-revealed/ https://briefnews.eu/is-this-the-reason-why-tottenham-star-hugo-lloris-is-making-blunders-theory-revealed/#respond Thu, 25 Oct 2018 15:11:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/is-this-the-reason-why-tottenham-star-hugo-lloris-is-making-blunders-theory-revealed/

The England legend believes Lloris may have lost concentration and that is what is behind his latest rush of blood.

Harry Kane thought he had scored a crucial winner which would have handed Spurs a European lifeline against PSV, the other team without a point to their name after two matches.

But Lloris raced outside his penalty area and scythed down Hirving Lozano, earning him a straight red card.

Shortly after, former Newcastle loanee Luuk de Jong secured a 2-2 draw for PSV which is unlikely to be of any use for either team.

It’s yet another error from Lloris, who also cocked up against Barcelona in the group stages.

Discussing the error on Love Sport Radio, Shilton said: “He’s possibly lost concentration. A few people have said that about Lloris that he does make his fair share of errors.

“His technique wasn’t great, coming out feet first is something you don’t do.

“You always come out with head behind your hands and spread yourself across – and it wasn’t a great decision either

“He does have moments where it’s like ‘I don’t know what he’s doing there’ but that happens to all keepers.

“He’s a World Cup winning captain and you can’t get better than that.

“He had a good World Cup, he’s been a terrific keeper for Spurs but there has been more mistakes this season for some reason.

“Although there have been games where he’s been superb — in one recently he made two or three saves and got a result out of it.

“You tend to forget the saves he does make but there have been a few high profile mistakes.”

Mauricio Pochettino refused to blame Lloris for his red card in 2-2 but admits Spurs will now struggle to reach the Champions League knockout stages.

“I’m not going to blame any player,” Pochettino said. “If someone is to blame it’s myself, I am responsible for the team. Not the player.

“Players are there to play. The problem is when you are so good, you dominate the game and create the chances and you can’t kill the game.

“Then an accident from Hugo and the decision didn’t help us, and you draw and it puts our qualification for the next stage in a difficult position.

“Was it a red card? In my opinion I think no, but we cannot blame the referee.”

Hugo Lloris warns Paul Pogba over France duties after miserable Man Utd season https://briefnews.eu/hugo-lloris-warns-paul-pogba-over-france-duties-after-miserable-man-utd-season/ https://briefnews.eu/hugo-lloris-warns-paul-pogba-over-france-duties-after-miserable-man-utd-season/#respond Sat, 02 Jun 2018 12:33:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hugo-lloris-warns-paul-pogba-over-france-duties-after-miserable-man-utd-season/

After  boss Jose Mourinho and midfield partner Nemanja Matic urged Pogba to become more of a leader on the pitch, his international team-mate Hugo Lloris has issued a similar challenge ahead of the World Cup in Russia, where France will start as one of the favourites.

Pogba, dropped on occasions by Mourinho last season, has been criticised for failing to make a sustained impact in some games as well as for appearing to have more focus on his hairstyles, goal celebrations and social media interests.

But Tottenham goalkeeper Lloris says Pogba, now 25, is no longer a young player with potential but a mature professional who must start to use the vast experience he has gained after four seasons with Juventus, two at Old Trafford and 52 caps for France.

“Paul is no longer a young player,” said Lloris. “He has collected experience with his club and with the national team.

“He has a lot of talent and that label has stuck with him since the beginning.

“He has had a very good season, although people still debate it. As a football player and as a football fan, I think he had a very good season.

“He has this desire to shine with the French national team. Will he be the ‘boss’? That’s a strong word but a ‘leader’ is what is expected of him on and off the field.

“He is reaching maturity and he wants to do well. But it’s also important that he focuses on his individual performance. This is the best way, to lead by example.”

Pogba, who scored six goals and created 12 assists in 37 appearances for United last season, is one of the key players in a France squad looking to go one better in Russia than their runners-up spot at Euro 2016.

Queen Letizia of Spain goes nautical in Hugo Boss shirt for the Discapnet awards https://briefnews.eu/queen-letizia-of-spain-goes-nautical-in-hugo-boss-shirt-for-the-discapnet-awards/ https://briefnews.eu/queen-letizia-of-spain-goes-nautical-in-hugo-boss-shirt-for-the-discapnet-awards/#respond Mon, 26 Jun 2017 19:47:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/queen-letizia-of-spain-goes-nautical-in-hugo-boss-shirt-for-the-discapnet-awards/

The 44-year-old Spanish royal looked chic in statement red trousers and a blue, white and red striped shirt by Hugo Boss – priced at £122.83 – which she wore tucked in.

She matched her heels and belt with the colour of her trousers and accessorised with silver ear climber earrings.

Letizia wore her hair down for the awards and finished off the look with a thick coating of mascara and lipgloss.

The Discapnet awards 2017 was held at the Somontes Club in the Spanish capital.

The annual awards celebrate the ONCE Foundation for Accessibility Commitment to ICT and Persons with Disabilities.

As well as delivering a speech to both nominees and guests, Letizia presented the winner with their prize.

The former journalist is known all over the world for her impeccable style.

But last week, she was pictured wearing a similar outfit to one she’d worn on a recent royal trip.

Last Monday she wore a pair of sky-high heels to an event at the Prado Museum.

She was photographed attending ‘The Art of Educating’ school programme at El Prado Museum with husband King Felipe VI of Spain.

Letizia wore a white cropped collarless jacket with three quarter length sleeves along with a chiffon skirt which fell just below her knee.

Her nude-coloured stiletto mules had a large bow on the front and matched the colour of her clutch bag.

Manicured gardens, Victor Hugo and fashion: Discover the Marais district of Paris https://briefnews.eu/manicured-gardens-victor-hugo-and-fashion-discover-the-marais-district-of-paris/ https://briefnews.eu/manicured-gardens-victor-hugo-and-fashion-discover-the-marais-district-of-paris/#respond Sat, 15 Apr 2017 04:55:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/manicured-gardens-victor-hugo-and-fashion-discover-the-marais-district-of-paris/

ParisGETTY

Our writer falls for one of the oldest and most beautiful districts in the French capital

There was already a queue at Café Hugo, snaking out into the warm spring sunshine, as we approached. It was tempting to head elsewhere, but on a bustling Saturday afternoon on the Place des Vosges – one of Paris’s most historic and beautiful Georgian squares – just about every restaurant and coffee shop was full to bursting.

Ten minutes later, seated at an outdoor table overlooking the square’s manicured gardens and rows of lofty 17th-century redbrick houses, we kicked back with cappuccinos and listened to the hypnotic sounds of an opera singer busking a few yards away. It had definitely been worth the wait.

My husband and I were in the Marais district of Paris – not far from the Centre Pompidou and Place de la Bastille – the city’s oldest neighbourhood, which grew up on former marshland (marais) in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The square, which was built by Henry IV of France, was known as a place of high society gatherings and was also the home of writer Victor Hugo. He lived in an apartment at Number Six from 1832 to 1848 and wrote part of his masterpiece novel Les Misérables there. (It’s now the Victor Hugo Museum and is well worth a visit.)

Today, “Old Paris” – as the Marais is sometimes referred – retains its reputation as the city’s fashionable heart, and it’s easy to feel a million miles away as you wander its warren of medieval streets and courtyards lined with hip boutiques, designer hotels and art galleries.

In reality, we had only set off from London at 10.30am that morning and were enjoying our coffees in the sunshine by early afternoon, such is the ease of travelling to and from France’s capital.

We had caught the Eurostar from

St Pancras International, upgrading to Standard Premier class to begin our city break in style. Continental breakfast was served at our seat, while we also enjoyed extra legroom and baggage allowance.

Just over two hours later, we arrived at Gare du Nord, feeling refreshed, and caught a cab to our hotel Pavillon de la Reine, located right on the Place des Vosges. In its earliest incarnation, the hotel was a stunning arcade, which King Henry built in homage to his wife Margaret. Now, it’s a four-star luxurious retreat with 54 individually decorated guest rooms (half of which are suites).

Accessed via original solid wooden gates off the square, Pavillon de la Reine sits on a quiet courtyard and has a spectacular chateau-style façade, clad in ivy.

Off the low-lit reception area is a cosy library-cum-restaurant (La Bilbliothèque) and an equally inviting bar (Le Salon), which has a beautiful original marble fireplace. There’s also a spa in the basement, with a range of massages and treatments, a jacuzzi, steam room and small gym.

Moulin RougeGETTY

The windmill on the roof of the Moulin Rouge

The interiors are a blend of contemporary and period, with dark wood furnishings, lavish patterned wallpapers and luxurious fabric covered walls in the hallways. Our third-floor suite felt more like an apartment with its large bedroom, living room and bathroom, and the soft furnishings were all in sumptuous gold and beige.

But while these are all reasons to stay here alone, it’s the hotel’s location that ultimately sells it. As well as the gorgeous square and charms of the Marais district, it’s within walking distance of Notre Dame Cathedral and is close to the Picasso Museum, which reopened a couple of years ago after a €52 million expansion.

The Louvre is only 10 minutes away on the Metro and we stopped for the obligatory glimpse (between the hordes) of the Mona Lisa. The world’s largest private Rembrandt collection is on view, too, as part of the Louvre’s 2017 exhibition season celebrating the Dutch Golden Age.

Due to the sheer amount of sights we planned to cram in that weekend, we decided to save money and time by investing in a Paris Pass, which includes entrance to more than 60 tourist attractions, along with free public transport.

One of our highlights was visiting the beautiful Palace of Versailles, having been inspired by the BBC2 drama series (which returns this week) – its jaw-droppingly opulent Hall of Mirrors is a must-see.

Before we caught the Eurostar home, we fit in a trip to the Moulin Rouge, too. The world’s most famous cabaret show is just as wildly over-the-top as you would imagine.

It was a fitting tribute to this colourful and vibrant city, leaving our whirlwind break on a high.

Way to go

Stays at Pavillon de la Reine (pavillondelareine.com/+33 140 29 19 19) start from €330 per room, per night, based on two sharing on a B&B basis. Eurostar (eurostar.com/03432 186186) operates up to 19 daily services from London St Pancras International to Paris Gare du Nord, with journey times from 2 hours 15 minutes. One-way fares start from £29 and from £84.50 for Standard Premier class, where you can enjoy quiet, spacious surroundings and a light meal. A two-day Paris Pass costs from £111pp and tickets to the Moulin Rouge start from £99pp, including champagne. Book both via attraction-tickets-direct.co.uk.

The Place des Vosges

Ten things you must do in Paris

1 Enjoy a cappuccino and a slice of Parisian history in the Place des Vosges.

2 Take the elevator to the viewing deck on top of the Montparnasse tower for wonderful views…

3 …or head to the top of the Eiffel Tower for an equally spectacular outlook.

4 For great French fare, dine at cute French bistro Gaspard de la Nuit, in the Marais district.

5 Get lost in the Louvre. The new Rembrant exhibition, in the Sully Rooms (until May 22), is well worth a visit.

6 Take in the opulent wonders at the Royal Palace of Versailles, just outside of the city.

7 Board a boat and take a river cruise of the Seine in the spring sunshine.

8 Soothe your weary feet in the hot tub at Pavillon de la Reine’s intimate spa.

9 Visit Sainte-Chapelle, a 13th-century, Gothic-style royal chapel with stunning stained glass windows.

10 Indulge in some retail therapy at Printemps and Galeries Lafayette Haussmann.

Hugo Weaving Boards Peter Jackson’s ‘Mortal Engines’ https://briefnews.eu/hugo-weaving-boards-peter-jacksons-mortal-engines/ https://briefnews.eu/hugo-weaving-boards-peter-jacksons-mortal-engines/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2017 22:11:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hugo-weaving-boards-peter-jacksons-mortal-engines/ Hugo Weaving Mortal Engines

The upcoming film adaptation of Mortal Engines is something of a Lord of the Rings reunion for the film’s writer and producer, Peter Jackson. One of the stars of Jackson’s beloved trilogy, Hugo Weaving, has joined the cast, which he wrote with Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Christian Rivers, who will direct the film.

Variety doesn’t have any details on Weaving’s role in the fantasy movie, which is based on Philip Reeve‘s four-part Predator Cities series. Weaving, who played the elf Elrond in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies, joins a cast that already includes Stephen Lang (Don’t Breathe), Robbie Sheehan (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones) and Ronan Raftery (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them).

The book is set a thousand years from now in a not-so-bright future when cities travel the world on huge wheels. The cities consume one another for resources, and London is on the hunt.

The moving city of London is the story’s main setting, where the poor live at the bottom and the rich live at the top. The post-apocalyptic tale’s protagonist, Tom Natsworthy, faces a greater threat than hungry cities rolling around, though. Here’s the first book’s synopsis:

Welcome to the astounding world of Predator Cities! London is hunting again. Emerging from its hiding place in the hills, the great Traction City is chasing a terrified little town across the wastelands. Soon, London will feed. In the attack, Tom Natsworthy is flung from the speeding city with a murderous scar-faced girl. They must run for their lives through the wreckage–and face a terrifying new weapon that threatens the future of the world. Beloved storyteller Philip Reeve creates a brilliant new world in the Predator Cities series, called “phenomenal…violent and romantic, action-packed and contemplative, funny and frightening” by the Sunday Times.

Jackson and Walsh acquired the rights to the book all the way back in 2001. Now, it’s finally ready to go before cameras. Rivers will begin shooting Mortal Engines in New Zealand this summer.

Back in 2009, it was speculated Jackson would direct the adaptation himself, but Rivers, a longtime collaborator of Jackson’s, took the job. Mortal Engines is his feature directorial debut, but previously he shot second unit work for The Hobbit movies and Pete’s Dragon, worked as a storyboard artist on Dead Alive, and won an Academy Award for King Kong‘s visual effects.

Mortal Engines opens in theaters December 14, 2018.

Tommy Hilfiger and Hugo Boss are the latest fashion brands to announce Android Wear watches https://briefnews.eu/tommy-hilfiger-and-hugo-boss-are-the-latest-fashion-brands-to-announce-android-wear-watches/ https://briefnews.eu/tommy-hilfiger-and-hugo-boss-are-the-latest-fashion-brands-to-announce-android-wear-watches/#respond Sat, 25 Mar 2017 06:34:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tommy-hilfiger-and-hugo-boss-are-the-latest-fashion-brands-to-announce-android-wear-watches/

Hugo Boss and Tommy Hilfiger are the latest fashion companies to announce their own Android Wear 2.0 watches at Baselworld 2017. The news continues the trend we’ve been seeing of fashion brands stepping up to fill the gaps in the wearables market caused by an absence of new models from established tech companies like Motorola.

Hugo Boss’ watch — the Touch — looks a bit more formal and appears to have a leather band option, which is nice. According to Wareable, the Touch will offer NFC but no heart rate sensor. But given the fashion facing look, it’s probably not the sort of watch you’d wear on a run anyway. The Touch is expected to cost $ 395 when it hits the market in August.

Meanwhile, the Tommy Hilfiger TH24/7You (in one of the worst product names I’ve ever encountered), in line with the fashion brand, is a little more casually styled, with a metal link bracelet. The TH24/7You is cheaper than the Touch, at $ 299, although it lacks both NFC or a heart rate monitor.

Unfortunately, neither watch has a lot of details when it comes to specifications right now. They both do run Android Wear 2.0, but actual information on the hardware — including size, which is a major issue in most Wear devices on the market — have yet to be announced.
