Fox News is one of three top news websites that are not encrypting content.

In February, Emily Schechter, the Chrome Security Product Manager at Google, announced in a blog post that beginning with the release of Chrome version 68, “Chrome will mark all HTTP sites as ‘not secure’.” This means that Chrome users will see a visible warning next to the Web address for sites using unencrypted HTTP to serve up pages—a warning that Google has been rolling out slowly over the past few months, starting with pages that have forms requesting information.

Chrome 68 ships this month, so the deadline to avoid its “badge of shame” is looming. Some major sites are pressing to beat the deadline—the BBC recently made the move to HTTPS by default for its websites, as BBC News principal software engineer James Donohue recounted in a Medium post on July 6. But other major news sites—including Fox News, Time, and Newsweek—still leave their traffic unencrypted. As a result, they leave their Web content vulnerable to code insertion by Internet service providers or by malicious third parties that manage to place themselves between sites and their readers.

Admittedly, it’s not easy for major sites to switch to secure HTTP. Ars Technica went to HTTPS by default in January 2017, after a major engineering effort. Accommodating our own static and dynamic content systems, as well as third-party content (including advertisements and content from other Condé Nast sites) complicated the task. For sites with the amount of content and traffic that Fox News, Time, and Newsweek handle, it’s a big task.

Tens of thousands of Fortnite players have been infected by malware that hijacks encrypted Web sessions so it can inject fraudulent ads into every website a user visits, an executive with a game-streaming service said Monday.

Rainway CEO Andrew Sampson said in a blog post that company engineers first detected the mass infections last week when server logs reported hundreds of thousands of errors. The engineers soon discovered that the errors were the result of ads that somehow were injected into user traffic. Rainway uses a technique known as whitelisting that permits customers to connect only to approved URLs. The addresses hosting the fraudulent addresses—hosted on the adtelligent.com and springserve.com domains—along with unauthorized JavaScript that accompanied them made it clear the traffic was generated by malware infecting a large number of game players using the Rainway service. Rainway is a cloud-based service that lets people play PC games remotely, similar to PlayStation Now.

“As the errors kept flowing in, we took a glance at what these users had in common,” Sampson wrote. “They didn’t share any hardware, their ISPs were different, and all of their systems were up to date. However, one thing did stand out—they played Fortnite.”

23,000 HTTPS certificates axed after CEO emails private keys https://briefnews.eu/23000-https-certificates-axed-after-ceo-emails-private-keys/ https://briefnews.eu/23000-https-certificates-axed-after-ceo-emails-private-keys/#respond Thu, 01 Mar 2018 14:27:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/23000-https-certificates-axed-after-ceo-emails-private-keys/

A major dust-up on an Internet discussion forum is touching off troubling questions about the security of some browser-trusted HTTPS certificates when it revealed the CEO of a certificate reseller emailed a partner the sensitive private keys for 23,000 TLS certificates.

The email was sent on Tuesday by the CEO of Trustico, a UK-based reseller of TLS certificates issued by the browser-trusted certificate authorities Comodo and, until recently, Symantec. It was sent to Jeremy Rowley, an executive vice president at DigiCert, a certificate authority that acquired Symantec’s certificate issuance business after Symantec was caught flouting binding industry rules, prompting Google to distrust Symantec certificates in its Chrome browser. In communications earlier this month, Trustico notified DigiCert that 50,000 Symantec-issued certificates Trustico had resold should be mass revoked because of security concerns.

Shockingly cavalier

When Rowley asked for proof the certificates were compromised, the Trustico CEO emailed the private keys of 23,000 certificates, according to an account posted to a Mozilla security policy forum. The report produced a collective gasp among many security practitioners who said it demonstrated a shockingly cavalier treatment of the digital certificates that form one of the most basic foundations of website security.

This article was originally published on Scott Helme’s blog and is reprinted here with his permission.

We have a little problem on the web right now and I can only see it becoming a larger concern as time goes by: more and more sites are obtaining certificates, vitally important documents needed to deploy HTTPS, but we have no way of protecting ourselves when things go wrong.

Certificates

We’re currently seeing a bit of a gold rush for certificates on the Web as more and more sites deploy HTTPS. Beyond the obvious security and privacy benefits of HTTPS, there are quite a few reasons you might want to consider moving to a secure connection that I outline in my article Still think you don’t need HTTPS?. Commonly referred to as “SSL certificates” or “HTTPS certificates”, the wider Internet is obtaining them at a rate we’ve never seen before in the history of the web. Every day I crawl the top one million sites on the Web and analyze various aspects of their security and every 6 months I publish a report. You can see the reports here, but the main result to focus on right now is the adoption of HTTPS.

Not only are we continuing to deploy HTTPS, the rate at which we’re doing so is increasing, too. This is what real progress looks like. The process of obtaining a certificate has become more and more simple over time and now, thanks to the amazing Let’s Encrypt, it’s also free to get them. Put simply, we send a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) to the Certificate Authority (CA) and the CA will challenge us to prove our ownership of the domain. This is usually done by setting a DNS TXT record or hosting a challenge code somewhere on a random path on our domain. Once this challenge has been satisfied the CA it issues the certificate and we can then present it to visitors’ browsers and get the green padlock and “HTTPS” in the address bar.

Google takes Symantec to the woodshed for mis-issuing 30,000 HTTPS certs https://briefnews.eu/google-takes-symantec-to-the-woodshed-for-mis-issuing-30000-https-certs/ https://briefnews.eu/google-takes-symantec-to-the-woodshed-for-mis-issuing-30000-https-certs/#respond Fri, 24 Mar 2017 01:04:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-takes-symantec-to-the-woodshed-for-mis-issuing-30000-https-certs/

In a severe rebuke of one of the biggest suppliers of HTTPS credentials, Google Chrome developers announced plans to drastically restrict transport layer security certificates sold by Symantec-owned issuers following the discovery they have issued more than 30,000 certificates.

Effective immediately, Chrome plans to stop recognizing the extended validation status of all certificates issued by Symantec-owned certificate authorities, Ryan Sleevi, a software engineer on the Google Chrome team, said Thursday in an online forum. Extended validation certificates are supposed to provide enhanced assurances of a site’s authenticity by showing the name of the validated domain name holder in the address bar. Under the move announced by Sleevi, Chrome will immediately stop displaying that information for a period of at least a year. In effect, the certificates will be downgraded to less-secure domain-validated certificates.

More gradually, Google plans to update Chrome to effectively nullify all currently valid certificates issued by Symantec-owned CAs. With Symantec certificate representing more than 30 percent of the Internet’s valid certificates by volume in 2015, the move has the potential to prevent millions of Chrome users from being able to access large numbers of sites. What’s more, Sleevi cited Firefox data that showed Symantec-issued certificates are responsible for 42 percent of all certificate validations. To minimize the chances of disruption, Chrome will stagger the mass nullification in a way that requires they be replaced over time. To do this, Chrome will gradually decrease the “maximum age” of Symantec-issued certificates over a series of releases. Chrome 59 will limit the expiration to no more than 33 months after they were issued. By Chrome 64, validity would be limited to nine months.

Newly discovered flaw undermines HTTPS connections for almost 1,000 sites https://briefnews.eu/newly-discovered-flaw-undermines-https-connections-for-almost-1000-sites/ https://briefnews.eu/newly-discovered-flaw-undermines-https-connections-for-almost-1000-sites/#respond Thu, 09 Feb 2017 20:27:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/newly-discovered-flaw-undermines-https-connections-for-almost-1000-sites/

Encrypted connections established by at least 949 of the top 1 million websites are leaking potentially sensitive data because of a recently discovered software vulnerability in appliances that stabilize and secure Internet traffic, a security researcher said Thursday.

The bug resides in a wide range of firewalls and load balancers marketed under the F5 BIG-IP name. By sending specially crafted packets to vulnerable sites, an attacker can obtain small chunks of data residing in the memory of connected Web servers. The risk is that by stringing together enough requests, an attacker could obtain cryptographic keys or other secrets used to secure HTTPS sessions end users have established with the sites, security researcher Filippo Valsorda told Ars. He didn’t identify the sites that tested positive in his scans, but results returned by a publicly available tool included with his vulnerability disclosure included the following:

The threat stems from a vulnerability in F5 code that implements a transport layer security feature known as session tickets. Session tickets can speed up encrypted transactions by allowing previously established HTTPS connections to resume without a key having to be renegotiated all over again. Sites that use the vulnerable F5 appliances and have session tickets enabled are vulnerable.
