Chelsea were knocked out of the 2009 Champions League semi-finals by Barcelona, exiting the compeititon on away goals in a 1-1 draw.

The game was not without its controversies and the Blues had numerous penalty appeals which were dismissed by referee Tom Henning Ovrebo.

The Stamford Bridge club were incensed and Michael Ballack famously chased the ref across the pitch while Didier Drogba branded him a “disgrace” in his post-match comments.

And the Norwegian official has now admitted in a candid interview with Spanish newspaper Marca that he was not proud of his performance and has apologised to the Blues.

“It was not my best day, really,” Ovrebo said.

“But those mistakes can be committed by a referee… and sometimes a player or a coach. Some days you’re not at the level you should be.

“I can’t be proud of that performance. They were handball situations.

“I judged them on the pitch and I think it is not interesting to know what I think of those actions once judged.

“But I understand that people think differently to the decisions I made at the time. That discussion will continue eternally.

“I was responsible for the decisions that were made and we can argue that, if I had taken others, maybe Chelsea would have qualified for the final.

“We will never know. I made decisions and they were not the best.

“But it is difficult to say if, without that arbitration, Barcelona would have been eliminated or not.”

Huddersfield vs Man Utd LIVE updates: Latest FA Cup scores, news and stream details

Huddersfield 0-2 Man Utd (Lukaku x 2) LIVE updates: Express Sport brings you the latest FA Cup scores, news and stream details

78: Billing collects the ball 20 yards out, he drives into the area, creates space and has an effort well saved by Romero.

A change for Manchester United as Martial replaces Sanchez.

75: Lukaku for the hat-trick… denied! The Belgian does a couple of stepovers before seeing his goalbound effort blocked.

Something tells me that won’t be his last chance.

72: Double change for Huddersfield. Malone and Smith are on for Hadergjonaj and Kongolo. Right-back Hadergjonaj has been very impressive.

69: Lots of space for Manchester United to exploit now. Lukaku looks for his hat-trick but Mata can’t quite find him with a ball over the top.

66: The sting has been taken out of Huddersfield now. They’re still committing bodies forward but United seem to have a grip on it.

63: Alexis Sanchez has been directly involved in 16 goals in 16 appearances in the FA Cup (eight goals and eight assists).

60: I should mention that a child ran on the pitch from the Manchester United end when Lukaku grabbed his second. He managed to get a quick hug from Young and Sanchez before being ushered off. It’s all going on tonight!

58: Manchester United fans now signing ‘Que Sera, Sera’ as they take a step closer to another Wembley final. Looks like they’ll be in tonight’s quarter-final draw, that we’ll be bringing you LIVE after this game.

HUDDERSFIELD 0-2 MANCHESTER UNITED – LUKAKU

55: All the VAR in the world won’t stop that from being a goal.

Smalling leads the break from a Huddersfield corner. He lays it off to Alexis Sanchez, who sets Romelu Lukaku free.

The Belgian uses his strength to shrug off the attentions of Danny Williams before coolly converting underneath Lossl.

54: Another update, another cutback from Hadergjonaj on the right and another free-kick in a dangerous position for Huddersfield.

Looks like Billing is going to take this one. He steps up… blocked. Matic turns it behind for a corner, which Smalling clears.

51: Chance! Tom Ince has a free-kick just outside the penalty area. His effort is deflected to La Parra, who completely shanks the volley. Should be 1-1.

48: Much the same pattern as the first half playing out as Hadergjonaj’s cross from the right is cleared. Still no obvious solution down that flank.

HUDDERSFIELD 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED

45: Well VAR aside, we’re back underway here at the John Smith’s Stadium. Jose Mourinho and Romelu Lukaku are deep in conversation on the sidelines with the Belgian occasionally putting his hand over his mouth. Very intriguing indeed.

HT: This debate is going to rumble on for weeks. The main point is that VAR was supposed to be to correct a clear and obvious mistake. Juan Mata’s knee may have been offside but it was far from an obvious howler.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Rory: Appalling decision. BT Sport just used WORKING tech to show it wasn’t offside after the FA’s VAR has a conveniently wobbly line to rule it out, utterly disgraceful.

Ben: Everyone’s going to be taking about VAR now instead of Manchester United’s terrible performance and Jose Mourinho’s ridiculously bad management.

Oja: VAR is a waste of time!!! How is that even offside! Football should be decided by human beings (Refs and assistants) not a video in a corner!

HUDDERSFIELD 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED

HT: Now that’s a controversial end to the half as VAR denies Manchester United a second goal. We still haven’t seen conclusive evidence as to why it was ruled offside.

Nemanja Matic tucks home a cross a few seconds later but he was a mile offside. No need for VAR with that one.

45: Manchester United have doubled their lead, or have they?!

Juan Mata tucks away Ashley Young’s cross against the run of play, but there’s a suspicion of offside.

Referee Kevin Friend goes to VAR and the report back says the goal should be disallowed because Mata’s knee was offside. It remains 1-0.

BT Sport showed the lines on the screen but they were all wobbly. I think they’ve got this one wrong!

I promise the picture above is what the VAR showed. Unbelievable.

43: Close! Alexis Sanchez scoops a ball over to the onrushing Juan Mata but Schindler makes the crucial block. Not seen too much from the Chilean tonight.

40: We have a break in play as Steve Mounie receives treatment. Think he’ll be alright after a collision with Smalling.

39: Ah, hello Fergie, how are we this evening? Sir Alex Ferguson is in the house. He’s smiling in the photo but I doubt he’ll be too impressed with what he’s seen from United so far.

36: Hats off to the Huddersfield supporters. The atmosphere at the John Smith’s Stadium is electric. The volume increases a decibel or two as Billing fires a long-range effort down Romero’s throat. Not literally, that would be insane.

33: Quaner wins a corner. Isn’t rhyming fun? Anyway, Smelling and Lindelof collide when trying to clear the same ball, and Huddersfield win themselves another set-piece.

30: Half-hour gone and Manchester United are somehow ahead. Aside from Romelu Lukaku’s opener – they’ve been pretty poor this evening with Huddersfield having more than enough chances to equalise.

27: I feel quite bad for Shaw. Lukaku and Sanchez are occasionally helping him out, but he’s spent most of his time in two vs one situations. Huddersfield layng it on thick down there.

24: Add that to the list of ‘nearly moments’ for Tom Ince. Luke Shaw is being beaten constantly down that left flank all night and Hadergjonaj strides past him again. His low cross narrowly evades the sliding Ince.

21: United certainly showed up with the right attitude. I’ve just seen Lukaku covering at left-back with Shaw caught out of position. Anyway, Williams tees up a cross for Van la Parra, who nods straight at Romero. Really lively game so far.

18: United have weathered the Huddersfield storm and have started to create a chance or two of their own. Schindler blocks Smalling’s first effort from the corner before beating him in the area to clear another ball into the box.

15: Huddersfield with 75% possession so far. That’s all fine and dandy, but not when Manchester United have 100% of the goals.

Romero gathers a curling effort from Hadergjonaj, whose name I will be religiously copy and pasting all night long.

13: Oooooh! Should that have been a penalty? We’ve just seen a replay showing Chris Smalling handling the ball after a flick-on from a Huddersfield corner. It was coming pretty quick and VAR can only intervene to rectify a clear and obvious error.

11: Billing drives a 25-yard effort at goal but Smalling makes the block. You know Manchester United are under pressure when Alexis Sanchez is spending most of his time defending…

8: Kongolo wins the Terriers a corner as the comeback continues. Smalling scrambles it clear but it just comes straight back. Huddersfield going for this.

6: Massive opportunity for Tom Ince goes begging. The winger is played onside by Shaw, but he drags it wide of the post. Should be 1-1.

HUDDERSFIELD 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED – LUKAKU

3: Romelu Lukaku is back with a bang!

The Belgian has been a little quiet lately but he’s netted his 19th goal of the season after two minutes and 37 seconds.

Lukaku collects a throughball from Juan Mata before holding off Christopher Schindler with ease and slotting in at the near post.

2: “Jamie, who is Ethan Hamilton and why is he on the bench today?” I hear you asking.

Well, allow me to explain. Hamilton is a 19-year-old midfielder who plays for Manchester United Under-23s.

He has never played for the first team but has been a regular in the age-group sides at Old Trafford. Hamilton gets his chance as Paul Pogba has been ruled out.

HUDDERSFIELD 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

1: Oh it’s a filthy day in Yorkshire. Dark, dank and soggy at the John Smith’s Stadium as Huddersfield pray that lightning strikes twice. After that heavy weather-based introduction, we’re underway.

‘I DON’T CARE…’

17:15: Some interesting quotes from Jose Mourinho today. He didn’t particularly like being asked about Paul Pogba.

See for yourself…

The Manchester United manager said: “I was told about Paul Pogba’s illness this morning by the doctor. I don’t care (when he will return). I focus on the game and only the game since that moment, I will think about Paul after the match.

“It is a beautiful moment for the youth players on the bench, even if they don’t play. Angel Gomes played for a couple of times for us, Ethan Hamilton is on the bench for the first time. I have four senior players ready to play too.

“Here we had a couple of mistakes and paid for it. At our house, we had a very well organised wall by David Wagner which was difficult to break but we played continually well. We kept control after the goal. Today they are in their natural habitat where they play more comfortably. I am sure they want to be a giantkiller and to go to Wembley.”

Bash: Chris Smalling starting again today? I’d like to be the first to congratulate Huddersfield on their win today…

Steve: Ashley Young right back. Not being rested. Matteo Darmian still not playing. No Daley Blind either. Surely both leaving in the summer.

Matt: How has Smalling kept his place today?!!! Madness.

NO DRAMA…

16:45: The Paul Pogba saga has taken another twist.

The 24-year-old has been at the centre of speculation all week after reports surfaced that his relationship with United boss Jose Mourinho had become strained and that he was unhappy at being played too deep in midfield.

Mourinho dismissed those reports as “lies” at his press conference and said Pogba would play against the Terriers.

However, the club announced on social media that Pogba was ill and had been replaced in the squad by under-23 player Ethan Hamilton.

Mourinho accepted that Pogba was not in top form but said the reports were way wide of the mark.

“I don’t have to speak with you about my conversations with my players. I don’t have to tell you anything about it,” he said.

“It is my problem, it is the player’s problem. A big lie that our relationship is not good, a big lie that we don’t communicate, a big lie that we don’t agree with his positions and his involvement in the dynamic of the team.

“So, be objective and say what we all know: in the last couple of matches he didn’t play well. Period. End of story. Now, it’s my problem and Paul’s problem to deal with it and try to improve his performance level. You don’t need to be a liar.”

GOOD EVENING

16:15: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of the FA Cup.

Leicester and Chelsea have already booked their places in the fifth-round draw, can Manchester United join them?

The Red Devils return to the scene of their shock defeat earlier this season hoping for a different result.

We know that Paul Pogba will miss the clash through illness.

Jose Mourinho had said in his pre-match news conference that the French international would return to the side after a poor run of form in the past few weeks.

Drama? I think so.

Anyway, let’s have the line-ups.

HUDDERSFIELD vs MANCHESTER UNITED – TEAM NEWS

Huddersfield will be without midfielder Aaron Mooy.

Mooy has an infection in the knee he cut during last week’s Premier League win against Bournemouth and he will be sidelined for between two and three weeks.

Defenders Michael Hefele (ill) and Chris Lowe (hamstring) will also miss out, but striker Laurent Depoitre (ankle) and midfielder Danny Williams (dead leg) are back in contention.

Eric Bailly is in line to return after a three-month absence, but Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford are out.

Bailly has not played for United since suffering an ankle injury on November 5, while Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho confirmed Herrera and Rashford would remain out with the unspecified muscle complaints which ruled them out of last weekend’s Premier League loss at Newcastle.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (knee) is back in first-team training, with Marouane Fellaini (knee) and Daley Blind (ankle ligaments) recovering from issues of their own.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp singles out Simon Mignolet for criticism after Arsenal howler https://briefnews.eu/liverpool-boss-jurgen-klopp-singles-out-simon-mignolet-for-criticism-after-arsenal-howler/ https://briefnews.eu/liverpool-boss-jurgen-klopp-singles-out-simon-mignolet-for-criticism-after-arsenal-howler/#respond Sat, 23 Dec 2017 00:25:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/liverpool-boss-jurgen-klopp-singles-out-simon-mignolet-for-criticism-after-arsenal-howler/

Liverpool dominated large chunks of a topsy turvy match at the Emirates and took the lead, in a game match littered with defensive errors, through Philippe Coutinho but wasted several chances, Sadio Mane the main culprit.

Mohamed Salah added a second, but then Arsenal hit back with three goals in five chaotic minutes.

First Alexis Sanchez pounced on defensive hesitation, then Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet blundered to allow a leveller from Granit Xhaka, and finally Mesut Ozil put the Gunners ahead.

But incredibly then, an error from Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech allowed Roberto Firmino to haul Liverpool level late in the game.

A frustrated Klopp, who exchanged angry words with nearby fans as he threw down a water bottle after Firmino’s goal and appeared to have water thrown at him, said: “Of course we should have won but we had five minutes where we had obvious problems.

“It was not team defending. The first goal and the second were misjudgements. We opened the door for them in these five minutes. I’m disappointed.

“I was aggressively happy at our equaliser, I have made my apologies, but if the poeple were to apoligize to me it would take a bit longer! I did nothing, I threw a bottle onto the ground, I was not happy at that moment.

“It was not about controlling the game. In 99.9% of these situations Mignolet saves these balls – but not tonight. We should be three, four even five-nil up before we even defend a cross.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: “I’m frustrated we did not win – but to be honest it could have been over at half time. Give credit to the players because even at 2-0 we did not show weakness and came back.

“I will keep private what we said at half time – but the positive thing was that we were only 1-0 down.

“In the first half we were paralysed, frozen, second best everywhere. I said to the players the good thing is we’re only 1-0 down. What we did was not good enough. We had nothing to lose.

“But at 3-2 we were naive defensively. If I tried to be fair overall maybe it’s a fair result.”

Jack Wilshere said: “We played like we were scared in the first half.” ends

Did ump howler cost Danger? https://briefnews.eu/did-ump-howler-cost-danger/ https://briefnews.eu/did-ump-howler-cost-danger/#respond Mon, 25 Sep 2017 17:40:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/did-ump-howler-cost-danger/ PATRICK Dangerfield was judged best afield against Collingwood in Round 22 by many astute judges.

But did the umpires ignore the star after he had already been deemed ineligible? Or perhaps they simply overlooked him.

WINNER: DUSTY CLAIMS CHARLIE

ROBBED? PIE HOWE MISSES TOP MARKS

CHEEKY: WHAT DANGER SAID TO DUSTY

Dustin Martin took out the 2017 Brownlow Medal and was a deserved and worthy winner.

However with Martin well clear of his eligible rivals in the final rounds, attention on Brownlow night quickly turned to whether the Tigers star would poll more than last year’s winner.

Dangerfield was ruled out of Brownlow calculations following an MRP ban from the Round 19 clash with Carlton.

Late in Monday’s count it looked as though Dangerfield might pip, or at least equal, Martin as he surged.

And eyebrows were raised — on social media anyway — when Dangerfield failed to poll a vote in the Cats’ win over the Pies at the MCG.

That day, in a lacklustre clash, the Cats champ gathered 32 disposals (24 contested), had 12 clearances, laid five tackles and booted 2.2 — including a long bomb from 55m in the final quarter — to help his side scrape home by 11 points.

But he failed to catch the attention of the umpires.

Dangerfield was awarded three votes by Herald Sun reporter Sam Edmund.

He was also predicted to receive maximum votes in the AFL’s official Brownlow tracker.

Notably, he was also awarded the maximum 10 votes from both Chris Scott and Nathan Buckley.

Umpires awarded Cat Mitch Duncan (32 disposals, five tackles and seven inside 50s) three votes, Sam Menegola two votes (28 disposals and two goals) and Pie Taylor Adams received one vote for his 26-possession, 12-tackle game.

After polling a record 35 votes to win last year’s Brownlow, Dangerfield on Monday night -became the first player to record 30 or more votes in consecutive seasons.

It was also the sixth straight season Dangerfield had polled 21 or more votes.

He averaged 30 disposals this season and kicked 38 goals from 21 games.

Dangerfield polled votes in 13 games, including seven matches where he collected three votes.

He stormed home after recording just six votes to Round 8.

Martin admitted in his acceptance speech that it “would have been a bit awkward” if Dangerfield had polled more votes than him and there were some nervous moments late in the count that that could happen, but in the end there were sighs of relief all round as Martin saluted by three votes.
