All sorts of 3D-imaging technologies tend to get lumped under the label “hologram.” But there’s actually a variety of distinct technologies that can create the appearance of depth. Now, we can add another to the list: the photophoretic-trap volumetric display. The device uses one set of optical hardware to control the motion of a tiny sphere and a second set to illuminate the sphere as it travels. Provided the sphere can be kept moving fast enough, the result is a true-color image that has real depth since it’s built from light reflected from different locations.

The downside is that a single sphere can’t cover all that much ground in the amount of time our brain needs to construct an image. As a result, photophoretic-trap volumetric display is currently limited to either small images or showing only part of an image at a time.

The recent work, from a team at Brigham Young University, is a variation on volumetric displays. These involve projecting a changing image onto a moving reflective surface. If the change in the image is properly matched to the changing location of where it’s projected, the result will be the appearance of depth, since the light you see will actually be reflected at different locations. On the plus side, this doesn’t require the viewer to wear any hardware, and multiple people can view the image at the same time, each seeing it from the appropriate perspective.

Wireless networks already have to deal with increasingly crowded waves, and that’s only going to get worse when 5G rolls around. Any boost to the signal could lead to a big jump in performance, especially when you’re using very high frequencies that are more prone to interference. But how do you provide that boost? Researchers have an idea: ‘hover’ the antenna. They’ve developed millimeter wave antenna arrays that are almost entirely separated from the substrate you’d usually mount them on, preventing that substrate from weakening the signal like it does with conventional antennas.

They’ll also amplify the signal beyond that: new 3D printing techniques promise “lens” structures that focus and boost whatever signal comes out of the array.

The technology is still young, and there’s no mention of if or when it’ll come to market. However, it could be crucial to 5G and the next wave of broadband. It’ll be particularly vital for cellphones in cities, where a strong signal is crucial to overcoming crowded airspace, but it could also be helpful for bringing gigabit internet access to more homes. Instead of wiring whole neighborhoods with expensive and hard-to-deploy fiber optic lines, you could use these antennas to deliver fixed wireless with relatively little effort.

A few days after Christmas, a bright light was captured hovering over the Sheffield city center of the U.K., and a large number of viewers are now convinced that they have witnessed a UFO in Sheffield.

The footage of the alleged UFO in Sheffield was captured by a CCTV camera at the University of Sheffield on December 27, 2016. The fixed camera that filmed the UFO had been hooked up in order to monitor a nest box of Peregrine falcons located on top of the lecture theater of St. George’s Church at the University of Sheffield. The CCTV camera captured something very different, however.

At 7:18 a.m. on December 27, the camera filmed an extraordinarily bright light rising over the center of Sheffield, which is purported to be a UFO. The video was released on YouTube under the title of “UFO in Sheffield,” and the Mirror reports that the video of the UFO had been watched over 10,000 times just days after it had been posted on YouTube.

The original caption of the video reads “Real time recording of strange light in Sheffield sky,” and the video has now garnered just under 17,000 views.

Some viewers of the CCTV camera footage were convinced that the odd-looking light they saw was a UFO, while one viewer felt that if it was a UFO, it might have come from Mars, as the planet would have been in that direction at that time of the morning.

“Could be from Mars, it is over that way in the morning,” the viewer explained.

Another viewer, Wendy Bartter, wasn’t sure about what she was seeing.

“That’s the main consensus Scott, having taken off from Doncaster, but would have been exciting if Venus or alien spacecraft.”

Other viewers of the alleged UFO in Sheffield conjectured that the mysterious white light flying towards them may have just been an airplane rather than an alien spacecraft.

“Are you serious? a UFO?? slow moving light – it’s an airplane!” one person wrote.

“Could this be a plane with lights on flying towards the camera?”

There is reported to be military aircraft flying in the same direction the bright light was moving, and one poster questions whether it was, in fact, just an army plane rather than a UFO in Sheffield.

“There’s a large army plane that flies over this way most mornings, has it’s big light on until reaches over the city. Best guess is going to/from RAF Waddington? Of course, could be something else…”

One person who watched the video even questioned whether the object in question could have been a Chinese lantern.

The University of Sheffield video of the alleged UFO isn’t the first time that videos have been uploaded to YouTube showing UFOs in the city. In July 2009, one user posted a video titled “UFO Over Sheffield,” which lasts for 31 seconds, and in it, there appears an S-shaped object that is fluttering across the sky.

One watcher of the video said that they had seen the same object the day before, while another viewer said, “I saw a similar spinning ‘S’ shaped flying object in Alacati, Turkey.”

Another S-shaped UFO object like the one in the Sheffield video was also spotted by a YouTube poster in Philadelphia, and she said that it was 100 feet up in the sky and had a steady and slow rotation.

Sheffield in South Yorkshire has had a large number of UFO sighting over the years, and the Star reported in 2015 that many people have even called 999 to report UFOs and aliens. The publication then published a list of some of those telephone calls and what the results had been.
