This year Razor manages to combine all of those things into its new Turbo Jetts e-skates: It’s the sort of thing that your inner child will love, even as your adult self screams, “Get off my lawn!”

The hard plastic skates go over your existing footwear, and will snap over shoe sizes youth 12 to adult 12. One of the skates has a removable lithium-ion battery, which you’ll wear on your dominant foot. Neither skate is particularly heavy and, while not exactly petite, they’re still small enough to be stowed away in a bag or backpack for a day at the playground or office.

The battery lasts for about 30 minutes, though it’s really dependent on the weight of the person wearing them: Smaller children might be able to squeeze a few more minutes out of them, while adults pushing the skates’ max weight of 176 pounds will have to recharge a lot sooner. Luckily the battery only takes one hour to power up fully: It’s a pretty good ratio between play time and charge time, one that ensures that kids won’t get too frustrated waiting to use these again.

Anyone who’s ever worn a pair of Heelys will find using the Turbo Jetts second nature; it’s just a matter of pointing your toes up and letting the skates carry you forward at speeds of about 10 mph. The motor activates when the skate comes in contact with the ground, though I personally had trouble getting it going consistently.

Part of the problem is that I’ve never used Heelys or anything similar. I found myself treating the Turbo Jetts like regular roller skates a lot, as it was hard to overcome that muscle memory. It’s not going to work if you do that. After pushing off from the non-dominant foot, you really need to lean back and just let the powered skate pull you forward, keeping the non-powered skate in the rear. Though the bulk of the skates made it unlikely I’d fall backwards, I still couldn’t shake the sense I was going to fall on my butt. The need to keep one skate in front will at least keep you from falling flat on your face, but I did end up performing a few unwanted splits.

Even after struggling with the Turbo Jetts and taking a few spills at Toy Fair, I wasn’t ready to give them up. Luckily, I don’t have long to wait for my own pair — they’re available now for $ 130, both online and at Toys ‘R’ Us stores.

Radical Transport had just gotten its first hoverboard prototype working in February 2016 when the nascent market faced a potentially game-ending crisis: some of the first hoverboards, made by other companies, had begun catching fire.

Nick Fragnito and Evan Williams, the founders of Radical Transport, weren’t overly concerned though. They knew their board, the Radical MOOV, would be going after a different market. And they had Mark Cuban’s wallet and strategy team behind them. 

Cuban told Business Insider that he viewed the exploding hoverboards as an opportunity. The team he was backing was “confident they would be able to build a board that was better and far far safer,” he said in an emailed message.

Cuban said his role in the endeavor is limited to “writing checks” and providing strategic advice, while Fragnito and Williams focus on the engineering and marketing. 

Not a toy

The company is currently testing prototypes and can’t say for sure when the MOOV will be available for purchase. But it’s clear that the MOOV is being positioned as a legitimate mode of transportation. With its $ 1,500 price tag, the MOOV will be in the same price range as serious transportation devices like an Urbe bike or moped.

“It is much more vehicle than it is a child’s toy,” said Fragnito.

One of the biggest changes is a solid state riding platform that differs from the traditional halved swivel design. The solid board allows for a steering system based on weight rather than foot position, which Fragnito said creates a sportier rider experience. The system can also be tailored to the rider’s skill level; users can choose between different rider profiles from novice to advanced in the company’s app. The board also has a handle –  making it easier for daily riding, and colorful interchangeable deck boards for personalization. 

Fragnito said that before the MOOV he wouldn’t have considered himself a hoverboard purchaser but sees his product as an “electric rideable.” He and Williams have started incorporating the boards into their daily lives and say the devices work as an easy tool for coffee stops and lunch breaks. “It really is a showstopper, it’s sleek and doesn’t look like a toy,” said Fragnito.

Straight outta Dallas

Cuban recruited Fragnito and Williams in August of 2015 with the intent of buying the original hoverboard patent from Shane Chen and having the duo be his engineering team. Shortly after purchasing the license to pursue the patent, Cuban dropped the idea and announced he’d make his own board. Fragnito and Williams had previously taken a trip to China to observe Chen’s factory, and already knew they’d need to completely redesign the traditional hoverboard process to make the product safe and the business scalable. 

The board is sourced and manufactured in Dallas, Texas and aims to become one of a half dozen companies compliant with the UL ‘s hoverboard safety standard. The Consumer Products Safety Commission issued a statement in February of 2016 that banned retail outlets from selling boards that don’t comply with the UL’s standard.

The safety, innovative engineering and made-in-the-USA pedigree will help set the MOOV apart, the team believes. And if the MOOV’s kickstarter campaign is any indicator, consumers may be eager to hop on board: the project was fully funded within two days.

A French nun has been channeling her inner Marty McFly, whizzing around her convent and the streets of Bauge in western France on a hoverboard.

Sister Fabienne, 78, was spotted riding her hoverboard through the streets of the sunny town while running her daily errands on Friday.

The nun, who said she learnt how to ride the hoverboard from a priest who came to the town from Paris, described the experience of hoverboarding as “the joy of living,” as it makes her feel “comfortable, relaxed.”

Sister Fabienne, who is part of the Filles du Coeur de Marie Compatissant au Pied de la Croix (Daughters of the Heart of Compassionate Mary at the Foot of the Cross) religious community, took to the mode of transport mainly popular with younger users.

The hoverboard concept was made famous by the character Marty McFly in the hit Hollywood series, Back to the Future.

“It is the joy of living, being comfortable, relaxed. I still have to pay attention to move because I forget to lean forward, but it is pleasant,” Sister Fabienne told Ruptly.

“I had a good teacher. It was the priest who came one day from Paris with this toy. He proposed to the sisters to learn some notions of it, to do some courses. And I got hooked to it,” she added.

The hoverboard craze might be dead, but that’s not stopping the man who started the trend in the first place from trying again. Shane Chen, the man who runs Inventist — the company behind the Solowheel and the Hovertrax hoverboard — has returned to Kickstarter to crowdfund a new rideable called the Solowheel Iota.

The $ 600 Iota ($ 395 on Kickstarter) is a cross between Chen’s two most recognizable products. You ride it by standing on pedals with the wheels and motors between your feet, much like the Solowheel. But the Iota actually has two wheels inside the central housing, making it look sort of like someone cut a hoverboard in half and glued the opposite ends together.


Inventist

Riders will be able to cruise around for up to eight miles on an Iota, and it takes about 40 minutes to charge back up. It should be easy to pack up when it’s not in use, too, because the pedals fold up and there’s a handle on the top of the device. The whole setup weighs just eight pounds.

One of the reasons the hoverboard craze died — aside from all the explosions and fires — was that people looked a little absurd riding them. Maybe the most impressive thing about the Iota is that, from the side, it’s pretty hard to see what the person is even using to get around.

Another reason the hoverboard craze died was that, once the novelty wore off, it became clear that they weren’t going to revolutionize how people get from point A to point B outdoors. Perhaps this is why Inventist seems to be throwing around a number of use cases for the Iota, calling it “perfect for ‘last mile’ commuting, hanging out around town, running quick errands or just having fun.”

We won’t know if the Iota is different enough of a device to start a new kind of personal transportation craze until late 2017 — Inventist says the first units will start shipping in September. Until then, you can check out more information on the Kickstarter page, where Inventist has posted photos of prototypes, CAD drawings, and some harsh words for potential copycats.
