Jenny Ryan was on hand to try and stop today’s team of four budding quizzers in taking home some serious cash on The Chase. Under the watchful eye of Bradley Walsh, each player stepped up to the table with what they’d earned from their cash-builders hoping to outrun the Chaser and make it back to the Final Chase. However, when Bradley introduced second player Rebecca to Jenny, it’s fair to say he wasn’t expecting the sudden putdown she aimed his way for his “cockney” accent.

Having seen Alex already make it back to the Final Chase with £5,000 in the prize fund, Rebecca aimed to follow suit.

And she got off to a respectable start, impressing The Chase host Bradley by racking up £5,000 of her own to take to the table.

But when Jenny came out to face her, she couldn’t resist a cheeky swipe at Bradley after discovering Rebecca worked as a translator.

“Hello, ‘Be-Prepared’ Rebecca,” she joked. “It’s a good job you’re a translator, I think you can help me out.

The Chaser and Rebecca shared a giggle and Bradley’s reply before the contestant decided to say sorry.

“Apologies,” Rebecca said to Bradley, who put on a posh accent to respond: “Accepted.”

Despite the jokey spat, Rebecca didn’t let it stand in the way of her quizzing as made it back to the Final Chase.

Sadly, the same couldn’t be said for Jo who went home empty-handed after going for the higher offer proposed by Jenny.

Richard, however, left everyone gobsmacked when he won a staggering £50,000 in his face-off with the quizmaster.

This left the jackpot standing at £60,000 and the trio got to work trying to outrun Jenny.

With a score of 23, Jenny was always fighting a losing battle and today’s team left with £20,000 each.

The Chase continues weekdays at 5pm on ITV.

The host of Fox’s The Masked Singer tweeted Wednesday evening that he was sorry for anti-Semitic comments he made during an episode of his videotaped podcast, Cannon’s Class and that he offered “my deepest and most sincere apologies to my Jewish sisters and brothers for the hurtful and divisive words” he said during an episode of his videotaped podcast, Cannon’s Class.

Cannon continued that his remarks “reinforced the worst stereotypes of a proud and magnificent people” and that he felt “ashamed of the uninformed and naive place that these words came from,” adding that the video has been removed.

Read his apology, which unfolded over a series of tweets, in full below:

First and foremost I extend my deepest and most sincere apologies to my Jewish sisters and brothers for the hurtful and divisive words that came out of my mouth during my interview with Richard Griffin. They reinforced the worst stereotypes of a proud and magnificent people and I feel ashamed of the uninformed and naïve place that these words came from. The video of this interview has since been removed. While the Jewish experience encompasses more than 5,000 years and there is so much I have yet to learn, I have had at least a minor history lesson over the past few days and to say that it is eye-opening would be a vast understatement. I want to express my gratitude to the Rabbis, community leaders and institutions who reached out to me to help enlighten me, instead of chastising me. I want to assure my Jewish friends, new and old, that this is only the beginning of my education—I am committed to deeper connections, more profound learning and strengthening the bond between our two cultures today and every day going forward.

UPDATE: If Cannon’s future at The Masked Singer was in question, a statement the network issued Wednesday evening indicates that he isn’t going anywhere. “When we were made aware of Nick Cannon’s interview with Richard Griffin on YouTube,” it said, “we immediately began a dialogue with Nick. He is clear and remorseful that his words were wrong and lacked both understanding and context, and inadvertently promoted hate. This was important for us to observe. Nick has sincerely apologized, and quickly taken steps to educate himself and make amends. On that basis and given a belief that this moment calls for dialogue, we will move forward with Nick and help him advance this important conversation, broadly. Fox condemns all forms of hate directed toward any community and we will combat bigotry of any kind.”

Cannon’s apology comes just hours after ViacomCBS severed ties with the Wild ‘n Out host after failing to apologize for promoting “hateful speech” and spreading “anti-Semitic conspiracy theories” on his videotaped podcast, Cannon’s Class. A rep for the company added, “While we support ongoing education and dialogue in the fight against bigotry, we are deeply troubled that Nick has failed to acknowledge or apologize for perpetuating anti-Semitism, and we are terminating our relationship with him.”

Cannon quickly fired back at his former ViacomCBS bosses, insisting that he did in fact try to apologize, and “went as far to reach out to [Viacom owner] Shari Redstone to have a conversation of reconciliation,” only to be met with “Dead Silence!” “That’s when I realized they don’t want a conversation or growth, they wanted to put the young negro in his place,” he says. “They wanted to show me who is boss, hang me out to dry and make an example of anyone who says something they don’t agree with.” (A ViacomCBS spokesperson told our sister site Variety, “It is absolutely untrue that Nick Cannon reached out to [Redstone].”)

Cannon ended his statement by insisting ViacomCBS should apologize to him. He also demanded full ownership of the “billion-dollar” Wild ‘N Out brand.

Sadiq Khan leaves GMB hosts speechless over Boris Johnson admission ‘Extraordinary!’ https://briefnews.eu/sadiq-khan-leaves-gmb-hosts-speechless-over-boris-johnson-admission-extraordinary/ https://briefnews.eu/sadiq-khan-leaves-gmb-hosts-speechless-over-boris-johnson-admission-extraordinary/#respond Tue, 14 Jul 2020 19:06:10 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/sadiq-khan-leaves-gmb-hosts-speechless-over-boris-johnson-admission-extraordinary/

Following their guest’s admission, Garraway remarked: “That is extraordinary,” before going on to ask why he thinks the Prime Minister hasn’t made contact with him.

Mr Khan replied: “I think it’s for the Prime Minister to explain why that is. I hope it’s not because he’s playing petty party politics.

“I put aside party differences to work with the Government,” he continued.

Express.co.uk have contacted a representative of Number 10 Downing Street for comment on Mr Khan’s claims.

Taking to Twitter, viewers were just as confused by the admission, with one writing: “Did I hear London Mayor Sadiq Khan correctly there – he hasn’t spoken to PM Boris Johnson since 10th May?? #GMB.”

Another added: “@SadiqKhan hasn’t spoke to @BorisJohnson since May. @fmwales included hasn’t spoke to him in March/May???? What are you doing Boris???? #GMB #Covid_19.”

This Morning hosts ‘replaced’ in huge change to presenting line-up: ‘We plan to change’ https://briefnews.eu/this-morning-hosts-replaced-in-huge-change-to-presenting-line-up-we-plan-to-change/ https://briefnews.eu/this-morning-hosts-replaced-in-huge-change-to-presenting-line-up-we-plan-to-change/#respond Sun, 14 Jun 2020 13:43:53 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/this-morning-hosts-replaced-in-huge-change-to-presenting-line-up-we-plan-to-change/

This Morning has become a staple of British weekday television, with Phillip Schofield, 59, and Holly Willoughby, 39, presenting the show four days a week. Eamonn Holmes, 60, and his wife Ruth Langsford, 60, take over duties on the ITV show for the Friday edition of the programme as well as filling in during the holiday breaks. However, it is now being reported bosses are looking to diversify the hosting line-up and would like to welcome a black presenter to front the show. With none of the current stars set to quit, could one of them be replaced as a new member of the team is introduced?

For the past 11 years, Phillip and Holly have been hosting the programme together, with the former only joined by another presenter whilst his co-star has been on maternity leave.

Rochelle Humes, 31, temporarily replaced the former Celebrity Juice star for several weeks in 2018 when the host joined Dec Donnelly, 44, to oversee proceedings on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

There has been speculation recently one of the pair was going to quit, but with neither planning to jump ship, they could be replaced on a rotation schedule in the future to accommodate a new host.

This is because the show doesn’t currently have a black presenter fronting the programme and reports are suggesting things could be set to change.

With the Black Lives Matter movement continuing to spark a conversation about the representation of the black community in the media, it seems bosses are now considering how they can rectify this.

According to The Mail On Sunday, Martin Frizell, editor for This Morning, is looking into how ITV can address representation in regards to their hosting line-up.

The show boss reportedly said on a video call: “There is not a black presenter on any of the programmes today. We plan to change that, we [This Morning] are looking into it.”

An ITV source also added to Mr Frizell’s comments, telling the newspaper: “It’s a tough one for Martin.

“He appeared to really mean what he said so it will be difficult to simply give the presenter the once-a-week Friday slot because he would leave himself open to claims of tokenism.”

Express.co.uk contacted a representative of the show, but they declined to comment on the speculative reports.

With the source comments suggesting the Friday slot could be out the question, could a new presenter replace Phillip or Holly in regular slots during the first four days of the week?

Bosses could even consider bringing in a trio of hosts in what would be a huge step in changing the current format.

As well as the main four hosting the programme, they are regularly joined by a team of reporters to provide expertise and speak with members of the public.

Earlier this month, presenter Alison Hammond, 45, opened up about her own experiences of being a black woman in light of the Black Lives Matter protests, which have been sparked following the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died after being apprehended by a white police officer.

On Blackout Tuesday, a day where people across the world took a step back from their daily lives to educate themselves on the impact of racism, the presenter gave an emotive speech.

Alison told Phillip and Holly: “I believe this movement, Black Lives Matter, is so very important and so wonderful when I see my white, my Asian brothers and sisters standing by Black Lives Matter.

“It means they understand, they can’t understand fully, but they understand what we’re going through as black people.

“It’s not about all lives matter, obviously we know that it’s all about the fact if black lives mattered, we wouldn’t be in this situation.”

“When black lives matter, all lives will matter,” Alison added.

Alongside many other television production studios, ITV issued a statement to show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Taking to social media, the broadcaster’s official Twitter page posted the message which read: “We stand in solidarity with our black colleagues, storytellers and viewers around the world because #BlackLivesMatter.”

Phillip retweeted the post on his own social media pages with both hosts sharing a black square on their Instagram feeds in solidarity for Blackout Tuesday.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.

He added: “That’s why it’s incredibly impressive but yet at the same time so incredibly uplifting.”

Alex then said: “Thanks so much Prince Harry for that. He does make quite a promising One Show reporter don’t you think?”

Michael joked he was left feeling slightly disappointed with the Duke’s appearance, however.

He replied: “Didn’t get to see enough of the house though, did we?”

Alex jokingly screwed her face as she shook her head in agreement before he co-host continued: “You love doing that, don’t you?”

Alex hosted the show alone as her regular co-host, Matt Baker is currently taking a step back from the show and is currently self-isolating at home as he suffers from suspected symptoms of covid-19.

Despite the show’s efforts to limit unnecessary contact by using a skeleton crew, viewers weren’t happy with the decision to keep it on air.

One wrote: “The hollow applause from 4 people sounding exactly like our student TV productions at university. Consider me triggered. #theoneshow.”

“How is #TheOneShow still going, still on? No one needs this. It’s like watching Nero trying to learn how to play the kazoo while Rome burns. Put on an old comedy for god’s sake,’ another shared.

Playing to Empty Seats: How Daytime and Late-Night TV Hosts Attempted to Forge Ahead Without Studio Audiences https://briefnews.eu/playing-to-empty-seats-how-daytime-and-late-night-tv-hosts-attempted-to-forge-ahead-without-studio-audiences/ https://briefnews.eu/playing-to-empty-seats-how-daytime-and-late-night-tv-hosts-attempted-to-forge-ahead-without-studio-audiences/#respond Sun, 15 Mar 2020 04:40:06 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/playing-to-empty-seats-how-daytime-and-late-night-tv-hosts-attempted-to-forge-ahead-without-studio-audiences/

“The show must go on,” as the saying goes — and many a show tried to do just that, as coronavirus panic started to set in across the country.

Over the last few days, before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared COVID-19 a pandemic, a number of daytime and late-night series tried to move forward without studio audiences — which, if nothing else, made for interesting television. But as the situation worsened, most productions decided to go on hiatus.

As of press time, nearly a dozen late-night series — ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live!, CBS’ The Late Show and The Late Late Show, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and Lights Out, NBC’s Tonight Show and Late Night, HBO’s Real Time, and TBS’ Full Frontal — have opted to halt production, effective immediately. Among daytime offerings, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Tamron Hall Show and The Wendy Williams Show have followed suit. (HBO’s Last Week Tonight is scheduled to air a truncated episode on Sunday, before it, too, goes dark.)

What follows is a 72-hour timeline with clips from each show that attempted to keep the lights on…

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11

Live With Kelly and Ryan became the first show to go on air without an audience. It filled the void by having crew members fill the first two rows.

“As you can see, things are a little different here today, given the developing situation in New York with the coronavirus,” Ryan Seacrest said, explaining the situation to viewers at home. Added Kelly Ripa, “While we don’t have our regular studio audience, except for some of our producers… that shouldn’t stop everyone from watching at home. Because, let’s face it: You can’t go anywhere else!”

Shortly thereafter, the ladies of ABC’s The View went live with only producers and cameramen on the floor. “Well, hello! Hello! Hello!” moderator Whoopi Goldberg said, as she greeted a nonexistent audience: “Welcome to The View, y’all! Welcome to The View! Welcome to The View! Welcome to The View! Welcome to The View! Welcome to The View! Welcome to The View! Welcome to The View!”

Later that night, TBS’ Full Frontal With Samantha Bee became the first late-night series to put on a show sans seat fillers.

“We considered using a laugh track tonight,” Bee said. “Unfortunately, the only sound cues we had on hand were the woos from Saved by the Bell when Zack Morris kissed Kelly Kapowski. So we won’t have audience laughter, but we might have my laughter, because my writers added some jokes that I haven’t seen before.” Bee then proceeded to break several times during her initial segment on COVID-19.

THURSDAY, MARCH 12

The syndicated Wendy Williams Show followed Kelly and Ryan‘s lead and filled seats with myriad staffers. (“Welcome my staff and my co-workers, otherwise known as my co-hosts until corona can be conducted properly,” Williams said.)

When Comedy Central’s The Daily Show With Trevor Noah aired later that night, the Powers That Be thought the show would move forward with new episodes the week of March 16. That decision was reversed, but not before Noah serenaded his final studio audience:

A half-hour later, NBC’s Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon decided last minute to do away with the audience. Fallon then proceeded to put on what would ultimately be his last show.

“Like you, I’m watching the news, and I’m just as confused and freaked out as you are,” Fallon said. “But what I do know is when we’re there for each other, we’re at our best.”

Over on CBS, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert followed suit and performed to an audience of just a few staffers, who were spaced out among the 457 seats inside the Ed Sullivan Theater. Colbert eventually revealed that viewers at home were watching dress rehearsal; midway through his monologue, which he chose to perform at his desk, Colbert decided that it was redundant to go through the motions of a no-audience show twice. Before he brought out the night’s sole guest, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the host remarked on the day’s headlines — including word that Tom Hanks tested positive for coronavirus.

“Hey, coronavirus! You can shut down Italy, you can shut down South Korea [and] you can destroy our economy, but keep your filthy nucleocapsid proteins off Tom Hanks!” he exclaimed. “The man is an American treasure!”

By the time NBC’s Late Night With Seth Meyers was to record its no-audience show on Thursday evening, the decision was made to suspend production altogether. While a repeat aired that night, Meyers recorded a coronavirus-themed “Closer Look” segment that was posted as an online exclusive:

Last but not least was CBS’ Late Late Show With James Corden, which taped Thursday’s episode a day ahead of air. At the time, the host assured viewers that they’d keep the lights on and see what happens, but that won’t be the case anymore.

FRIDAY, MARCH 13

HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher went live from Los Angeles. During the show, which he performed in front of members of his writing staff, the comedian confirmed earlier reports that HBO would suspend production indefinitely following that evening’s broadcast.

“Welcome to F—king Ridiculous With Bill Maher,” the host said. “This country went from zero to crazy in about three seconds this week. It is Friday the 13th now, there’s a pandemic, the markets are in free fall… and Trump is president. So let’s hope we don’t run into a spate of bad luck!”

RuPaul Hosts SNL: Watch Video of the Best & Worst Sketches https://briefnews.eu/rupaul-hosts-snl-watch-video-of-the-best-worst-sketches/ https://briefnews.eu/rupaul-hosts-snl-watch-video-of-the-best-worst-sketches/#respond Sun, 09 Feb 2020 13:13:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rupaul-hosts-snl-watch-video-of-the-best-worst-sketches/

RuPaul‘s Saturday Night Live hosting debut was far from a total drag.

To his credit, the Emmy-winning Drag Race emcee was a highly enthusiastic host, whose energy was apparent throughout the broadcast. The sketches, though, were just middling. Aside from a pitstop at a children’s library, and a digital short in search of Drag’s next “it” girl, nothing felt written with Ru in mind.

It was, however, a great night for Pete Davidson, who co-starred opposite Ru in the aforementioned short, as well as featured player Chloe Fineman, who finally got a chance to shine during Weekend Update.

BEST: THE LIBRARY
This library was open for business when Ru dropped in to teach kids about the importance of “reading” — aka throwing shade. What followed was a rib-tickling roasting of classic literary characters, including Eloise (“You need to call the front desk and get a hot oil treatment for that broom on your head!”), Madeline (“Girl, you better draw France right!”) and The Very Hungry Caterpillar (“What’s up with your foundation? Why you look so orange? And your body is green, girl. Pop off!”).

BEST: CHAD & RUPAUL
“Drag needs someone new,” but it probably won’t be Pete Davidson’s dimwitted alter ego. As soon as he sissy’d that walk, Chad fell face first into craft services. Nevertheless, his short-lived stint as Ru’s protégé was a hoot.

BEST: CHLOE FINEMAN ON THE 2020 OSCARS
Fineman finally made her mark with this excellent Update showcase, which featured a series of layered impressions, including Renée Zellweger as Judy Garland, Laura Dern as Big Little Lies‘ Renata Klein, and — my personal favorite — Meryl Streep as Little Women‘s Aunt March exclaiming “Florence Pugh!”

BEST: BOOP-IT
This commercial parody started off slow, then went to an extremely dark place, as the popular toy became an object of obsession for a divorced dad who can’t get his priorities in check.

WORST: FAMILY CHARADES
A round of charades was ruined when Ru’s family refused to abide by the one rule of the game. That was pretty much the only joke here. The reactions from the opposing team weren’t especially funny, and the sketch was too low energy for the post-monologue slot.

WORST: THIRSTY COPS
Ru and Ego Nwodim made an excellent pair. In fact, it was their delivery that kept me from fast-forwarding through this unnecessary follow-up to the 2018 sketch, which featured Leslie Jones as Nwodim’s fellow officer and Seth Meyers as the driver forced to endure their cringey pickup lines.

Who’s up for another trip to the Bodega Bathroom?

Comedian John Mulaney will host the Feb. 29 episode of Saturday Night Live, NBC announced Thursday, marking his third visit to Studio 8H.

Formerly a writer for SNL, Mulaney previously hosted the sketchfest in April 2018 and March 2019, respectively blessing us with the “Diner Lobster” and aforementioned “Bodega Bathroom” sketches. He’ll be joined in February by musical guest David Byrne, who also recently appeared on Mulaney’s Netflix special John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch.

Actor Daniel Craig will then host the March 7 installment to promote the upcoming James Bond film, No Time to Die (in theaters April 10). This will be Craig’s second time hosting, while musical guest The Weeknd will be back for his third appearance.

As previously reported, RuPaul will preside over SNL‘s Feb. 8 episode with performances from Justin Bieber. The show most recently welcomed NFL player J.J. Watt; watch video of his best and worst sketches here.

Are you looking forward to Mulaney and Craig’s SNL returns? Tell us in the comments.

J.J. Watt Hosts SNL: Watch Video of the Best & Worst Sketches https://briefnews.eu/j-j-watt-hosts-snl-watch-video-of-the-best-worst-sketches/ https://briefnews.eu/j-j-watt-hosts-snl-watch-video-of-the-best-worst-sketches/#respond Sun, 02 Feb 2020 15:47:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/j-j-watt-hosts-snl-watch-video-of-the-best-worst-sketches/

RELATED STORIES

J.J. Watt didn’t make it to the Super Bowl — but he did touch down in Studio 8H this weekend.

While not a natural-born comedian, the defensive end for the Houston Texans seemed genuinely delighted to be hosting Saturday Night Live. His charm made up for his lackluster delivery throughout a subpar show, which fumbled multiple sketches in the stretch between his endearing opening monologue and Weekend Update. Worst of all was when the footballer was asked to sing his way through a Disney satire.

BEST: PILOT HUNK
Watt was at his best when he was relegated to a reactionary role. Take, for instance, when he stepped into the recording booth for the next edition of the Madden video game franchise, or here, when he was (sort of) asked to play The Bachelor‘s “Pilot Pete” and leave the heavy lifting to the ladies of SNL. We’ve seen this reality-show spoof a half-dozen times, but it still managed to entertain. Among my favorite moments were when Melissa Villaseñor’s bachelorette was dragged off set with a bag over her head after she disclosed her age, and when Chloe Fineman’s character introduced her “twin sister.”

BEST: DR. ANGIE HYNES ON BLACK HISTORY MONTH
After one-and-a-half seasons as a featured player, Ego Nwodim finally got a chance to make her mark with this Update showcase. The bit itself was a tad repetitious — a professor of African-American studies uses a segment on Black History Month to call out those who were “history to me,” including a former friend that showed up to her wedding wearing all white, and an ex-coworker who AirDropped her a nude photo at work — but Nwodim’s delivery was top-notch. Here’s hoping she’s back for another desk piece before season’s end.

BEST: ROBBIE
This play on inspirational sports movies (like the similarly titled Rudy) was flipped on its head when it was revealed that Chris Redd’s eponymous footballer was not at all cut out for the big game. The twist was predictable, but Riley’s initial outburst (“F—k no! Dude f—king sucks at football!”) earned Watt his biggest laugh of the night.

Trump 'SNL' Impeachment Trial Cold OpenHONORABLE MENTION: IMPEACHMENT FANTASY
A clever premise, but a subpar execution. Alec Baldwin, Beck Bennett and Kate McKinnon have wrung about all they can out of their respective impersonations of President Trump, Mitch “Played America Like a Fiddle” McConnell and Lindsey “Living His Best Life” Graham, and Cecily Strong’s John Bolton was… not her most inspired work. The sketch, however, delivered the two best jokes of the night: Trump pulling a “Weinstein” when he entered the courtroom using a walker, and Kyle Mooney’s Cousin Vinny referring to Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman as “two Yutes.” (Watch the sketch here.)

WORST: FROZEN 2
This Disney bit should’ve been sacked as soon as they heard the tone-deaf Watt in rehearsals. It’s also a wonder why the show would choose to make this the post-monologue sketch, or why now was the time to do a Frozen 2 spoof, nearly three months after the film’s release.

WORST: THE TALK
Even more excruciating than having “the talk” with your parents was having to sit through this clunker, wherein Watt told his teenage son how “sometimes you’ve gotta man up and clap those cheeks.” There weren’t enough laughs to counter all the cringe.
