Baldi’s Basics in Education and Learning offers intense educational action, mingling edutainment and horror as players work to collect notebooks and avoid a certain unsettling educator. However, this experience in discomforting school life is looking to get an upgrade, one that adds randomization, more complex stage designs, new characters to meet, and some (lethal-ish) field trips for aspiring students to go on.
Baldi’s Basics currently hurls the player into an unsettling school filled with strange, varied art styles, using the disjointed style of 90’s educational games to make player uncomfortable as they learn. Not only this, but they have to dodge the innocuous Baldi, a being whose goofy frown belies just how dangerous he can be to those who have little skill at basic math. It’s a chilling, yet ridiculous experience, one that offers a unique take on fear.
Developer Micah McGonigal is looking to add more to the experience, adding randomization elements to keep players from knowing exactly where to go, new stage elements to make progress more complex, new items that will help players survive lethal educators, and new characters that will make the player’s journey through school that much more difficult. On top of this, field trips will be added into the game, offering journeys to all-new places where you’ll have to deal with special play challenges (that will probably kill you). With these, Baldi’s Basics looks to make school life even more uncomfortable and dangerous than it already is.
Baldi’s Basics in Education and Leaning is available for free (in its original state) from Itch.io. For more information on the game and Micah McGonigal, you can follow them on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter. You can also donate to its further development through Kickstarter.
]]>A mystery grips an town lying within the vast desert, with the player at its surreal apex in horrifying text adventure Desert of Vice.
Inspired by the works of Kafka and Lovecraft, Desert of Vice takes players to a realm of supernatural monstrosities as they work to unravel the surreal events that grip the town. Based on the interactions they type out as they explore the steadily crumbling reality, they’ll reach one of six endings, although they might not exactly offer happy ending to the unsettling events.
Desert of Vice uses a minimalist art style to back up the text-based play, as well as an eerie soundtrack to amp up the discomforting mood of the game’s world. For those looking to get lost in a realm where their sanity will be tested as they work deeper into an intriguing story, it offers some otherworldly mysteries to unravel. Assuming they don’t unravel the protagonist’s mind first, that is.
Desert of Vice is available for $ 2.99 on Steam, the App Store, and Google Play. For more information on the game and developer Karolis Dikcius, you can head to the game’s site or follow them on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

A Reuters photographer named Bassam Khabieh captured an eerie scene in the Syrian town of Douma on Friday, which is located in the Eastern Ghouta region outside of Damascus.
The image captured by Khabieh shows local civilians inspecting, staring at, and walking by a missile that had been fired at the town by Russia or the Syrian regime.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

SpookyCellar takes players down into a maze-like creepy basement, arming them only with a flashlight, their wits, and a self-abusing sense of humor as they dodge the less-than-horrifying horrors that lie within.
SpookyCellar aims to gently tease all of the first-person, flashlight wielding horror games out there, putting players in a similar situation while having them face a much sillier cast of monsters that stalk them. That doesn’t mean that these floating heads aren’t capable of making a player scream, just that they might also crack the player up as they creep through the game’s five maze-like levels.
If you’re a little tired of horror games taking themselves so seriously while at the same time wanting to play something that will make you jump, SpookyCellar just might meet those particular criteria. Or if you just want to play the Madballs of horror games.
SpookyCellar is available for free on Itch.io, GameJolt, and IndieDB. For more information on the game and developer Bros Before Giraffes, you can head to the developer’s site or follow them on YouTube and Facebook.

Frank Oz‘s 1986 musical cult classic Little Shop of Horrors will be returning to movie theaters for a limited time event, as Fathom Events is hosting Little Shop of Horrors: The Director’s Cut, which includes a 23-minute ending cut from the film due to test audience reactions. Find out when you can see the Little Shop of Horrors original ending on the big screen.
In the original ending, the man-eating plant Audrey II succeeds in taking over the city of New York after killing Seymour Krelborn and Audrey. This is the original ending of both the stage musical it’s based on and the original 1960 Roger Corman film. But early test audiences in San Jose hated the ’86 film’s bleak ending. Oz said, “For every musical number, there was applause, they loved it, it was just fantastic…until Rick and Ellen died, and then the theatre became a refrigerator, an ice box. It was awful, and the cards were just awful. You have to have a 55 percent ‘recommend’ to really be released, and we got a 13. It was a complete disaster.”
And the original finale wasn’t cheap, created by the visual effects team using miniatures and tabletop animation. The climax reportedly cost $ 5 million to produce, which was a lot for 1986 when movies were typically made for around $ 15-20 million. Oz has said that the original ending made it “the most expensive film Warner Bros. had done at the time.” Oz insisted on holding another test screening in Los Angeles to see if they would get a different reaction, but the reaction was the same.
The filmmaker later recounted, “I learned a lesson: in a stage play, you kill the leads, and they come out for a bow — in a movie, they don’t come out for a bow, they’re dead. They’re gone, and so the audience lost the people they loved, as opposed to the theater audience where they knew the two people who played Audrey and Seymour were still alive. They loved those people, and they hated us for it.” The test scores were so bad that Oz has said that Warner Bros would probably not release the film theatrically.
Writer Howard Ashman was forced to create a happier ending, with James Belushi replacing Paul Dooley (who was unavailable for the re-shoots) as the character of Patrick Martin. The reshoots involved inserting shots of the human Audrey observing from a window into the musical number “Mean Green Mother from Outer Space” and a moment where Seymour shoots at Audrey II and discovering that the bullets have no effect. This allows Audrey II to be destroyed in the re-shot happy ending, leaving Seymour, Audrey, and the rest of humanity to survive.
In the theatrical cut of the film, everything seems to work out in the end (Seymour destroys the plant and marries Audrey) despite a final hint of something wicked. Oz and Ashman insisted on having an ominous final shot of a smiling Audrey II bud in Seymour and Audrey’s front yard. Both of them regretted having to create the new ending, believing that the original climax was faithful to the story and the characters. The reshot ending scored much better.
Warner Bros. restored the ending in 2012 as part of a DVD release and screened it at New York Film Festival, where fans loved the original ending even more than the one released in the theatrical cut. And now they’ll have the chance to see it on the big screen as it was intended. Fathom is screening the full movie with the alternate ending and a recorded introduction from director Frank Oz in theaters on October 29 and October 31. Tickets go on sale to the general public on September 29, 2017. To purchase, head over to the Fathom Events website.

]]>While Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants continue to resist the SDF advance, engaging in fierce urban warfare, the carnage from the battle is getting so grim that corpses are decaying in plain sight.
“The streets are full of dead bodies. The schools were targeted, the bridges, and mosques. The [dead] people are lying on the streets, some people were dragged by cars,” a refugee who escaped the city told RT’s Ruptly video agency.
“Dogs were eating the [dead] bodies for there was no one to pick them up. You would run away if you saw someone because there is no way you can pick them up,” said another refugee who is now waiting to be housed in the city of Hama.
Civilians are caught in the cross hairs of the US-led SDF troops and terrorists controlling the city, witnesses say. Locals escaping the battlefield blame IS and the US-led airstrikes for completely destroying the city.
“The massacres in Raqqa were committed by ISIS and the coalition warplanes,” one eyewitness said.
Safely in Hama, another man who was lucky enough to survive the siege noted the ferocity of the ongoing military operation.
“Nothing is left in Raqqa except for the destruction from the coalition and ISIS,” he said, emphasizing that the strikes have inflicted the most damage.
“We wish to get rid of both ISIS and the coalition. We want to live as safe Syrians as we were before.”
Families escaping the besieged Syrian city describe the mounting toll from the airstrikes as nothing short of a “massacre.”
“Every village had a massacre, massacres are everywhere,” one of the refugees from Raqqa told Ruptly in neighboring Hama.
The man recalled that in the village of Mayslaoun, 16 people were killed in one strike alone .
“It was claimed that ISIS bases were targeted in the village of Maysaloun, then 16 men died, they were civilians who have nothing to do [with ISIS],” the man said.
“All the villages were targeted, no village was left untargeted, some people lost their houses, others lost their children, some lost their wives,” another man said.
“Houses, families, children, women, all were hit by the random strikes,” the man said in Arabic. “Some villages were wiped out, some neighborhoods that cost a billion are demolished.”
Another man described the pain where 12 of his neighbors were killed in an airstrike. He only survived because he slept in the courtyard.
“I came back at morning to find the 12 of them dead… the children, the mother, and the man,” he recalled. “They died because of the shelling.”
The United Nations estimates that about 190,000 residents of Raqqa province have been displaced since April 1. From that number, 20,000 have been displaced since the SDF operation began in early June.
While the latest US-led Operation Inherent Resolve report has confirmed a total of 603 civilian deaths in the US-led air campaign in Iraq and Syria, Airwars, a UK-based group that monitors airstrikes and civilian casualties, claimed this week that it tracked “more than 700 likely civilian deaths,” in Raqqa even before the battle for the city began in June.
“In the three months before American-backed forces breached the city’s limits in early June, Airwars tracked more than 700 likely civilian deaths in the vicinity of the self-declared ISIS capital,” the group said.
As the battle to regain Raqqa intensifies, it’s likely that the civilian death toll will rise.
Between 30,000 and 50,000 civilians, according to UN estimates, are still trapped in the ISIS held city.
On Tuesday, Pentagon spokesman, Capt. Jeff Davis, conceded that the US-supported offensive in Raqqa is progressing slowly.
“We knew going in that Raqqa was going to be very hard,” the Washington Examiner reported. “There is not a consistent degree of progress in any military campaign, it’s a stop and go effort by its very nature.”

HBO have played with fans’ hunger for the record-breaking fantasy epic with several cryptic teasers, but have left them on tenterhooks for actual footage from the cycle in store – until now.
The haunting clip released today indicates inevitable doom for Cersei (played by Lena Headey) as her enemies plot to take her Iron Throne.
Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) seals her position as frontrunner as ruler of the seven kingdoms, as she rides her blood-thirsty dragon through the heart of Westeros.
Jon Snow (Kit Harington) is seen fleeing Winterfell in the midst of battle, while Arya (Maisie Williams) and Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) both appear to find themselves in sticky situations as they put in their stake in the race for Cersei’s coveted seat.
He elaborated: “I feel like I’d been lulled into a different pace. Everything happened quicker than I’m used to … a lot of things that normally take a season now take one episode.”
His co-star Kit Harington agreed: “This season is really different than any other season because it’s accelerating toward the end, a lot of stuff collides and happens much much quicker than you’re used to seeing on Thrones … it’s so different than what everybody is used to. It’s quite exciting.”
Game of Thrones returns to HBO on Sunday July 16 in the US and will be simulcast on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
Hawraa miraculously survived the US-led coalition airstrike on al-Jadida neighborhood in Mosul on March 16 that claimed the lives of her mother and two other relatives.
“We were sitting at my uncle’s house. She [Hawraa] and her mother, and my uncle’s wife went back home to cook and give her a bath, because she was sick. So they went home at eight o’clock, and the house was shelled by the American air force,” Hawraa’s grieving father, Alaa, recalls.
Hawraa was the only one to make it through the airstrike, and then had to battle for her life in the field hospital of Iraq Special Operations Forces after suffering multiple shrapnel injuries. The girl, although still feeble and is hospital care, is keen on making a full recovery. Hawraa has become strong enough to be able to speak to her other relatives by phone, although she still needs her grandmother’s help to sit down.
The 4-year-old seems not to comprehend completely what has happened to her.
“Yesterday, she was touching her hair and asking, where is my hair? Is it burned off?” Hawraa’s grandmother told RT.
While it will take a long time for the child to heal physically, it will be even harder to get rid of mental scars.
“She has developed a fear from explosions and the sounds of bullets. She doesn’t want to go back, ever,” her grandmother said.
Adjusting to the brutal reality is no less tough for Alaa, who keeps replaying events of the night of the raid. Due to the constant shelling of the area by Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL) terrorists, Alaa was forced to stay in his uncle’s house effectively being trapped there for three days and thus unable to help his family.
“I tried to save her, but I couldn’t save her from the shelling and the airstrikes. And Daesh [IS] were firing at us, and there were snipers, they were shooting at me so I couldn’t go out with her, I stayed there around three days,” Alaa said, adding that every time he attempted to go outside, he was shot at.
The news on his wife’s demise came amid that chaos. A neighbor told Alaa that he saw somebody who appeared to be his wife lying under a wall with a big, one meter high and half a meter wide hole in it. Walls with such man-made holes are used by IS militants to move swiftly while at the same time in disguise.
“I went through the holes and I saw my wife. I saw only one of her legs and part of her abdomen. She had no leg, no arms and no head, just this part of her body still there. I tried to take her out and they started to shoot at me. I just covered her with a blanket so the dogs wouldn’t eat her body,” Alaa recalled.
Alaa was told that his house, with his family inside, was targeted in the coalition raid. Later he discovered what he believes was a part of an American shell used in the bombing.
“You know that at the end of the missile there are four flaps, on that cartridge was written ‘made in USA’, I’m sure that was American,” Alaa said.
Alaa’s family became one of the many civilian casualties inflicted by the coalition air raids in Mosul. As terrorists use civilians as human shields and deliberately draw coalition warplanes to residential areas, the line between civilian and terrorist targets has become blurred.
Alaa believes that the bomb might have mistakenly landed on his house, while it was intended to strike a shooting position of jihadists in a nearby home. He recounts the toll of other misplaced strikes, going as far as calling the carnage “genocide.”
“All of these were airstrikes. Our house, out neighbor’s house. In one house alone, 144 people [were killed] and in front of our house 32 people [were killed]. Next to our house 13 people [were killed], in the house behind us more than 20 [were killed],” he said.
“This is genocide, I don’t know, how else can you see this?”
The US-led coalition has subsequently issued a statement, admitting that it targeted the area at the request of the Iraqi forces at the time of the incident and launched a formal investigation into the deaths of dozens of civilians in the residential neighborhood of western Mosul on March 17.
Announcing the probe, US CENTCOM commander General Votel stressed that IS “exploits” the US “sensitivity for civilian casualties” by using them as human shields, arguing that in this particular case the IS fighters “bear the responsibility for this as well.”
