Organizers of San Diego Comic-Con appear to be taking a “show must go on” approach to this year’s event.

In a tweet directed at potential attendees, SDCC brass gave the impression that the 2020 convention — scheduled for late July — could still happen. This despite stark warnings from the federal government that the coronavirus pandemic could last well into summer.

“To our amazing Comic-Con and WonderCon fans: We understand how difficult the current climate has been for all of us and appreciate your continued support through these trying times,” read the tweet. “No one is as hopeful as we are that we will be able to celebrate #SDCC2020 together come July. As we continue to monitor the situation with local authorities, we will post updates on our social channels! Until then, remember: ‘A hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.’ — Christopher Reeve.”

Back in February, several major Hollywood studios were already contemplating the possibility of pulling out of the fan convention. “There’s obviously concern,” said one unnamed exec at a major studio. “For now we’re taking a wait-and-see approach.”

SDCC is big business for San Diego, last year generating an estimated $ 149 million in regional impact to the city.  Hotels begin accepting reservations later this month, so a decision is expected soon.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ Sneak Peek: Supergirl Tries to Stay Hopeful Even After Losing [Spoiler] in Part 1 https://briefnews.eu/crisis-on-infinite-earths-sneak-peek-supergirl-tries-to-stay-hopeful-even-after-losing-spoiler-in-part-1/ https://briefnews.eu/crisis-on-infinite-earths-sneak-peek-supergirl-tries-to-stay-hopeful-even-after-losing-spoiler-in-part-1/#respond Sun, 08 Dec 2019 10:52:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/crisis-on-infinite-earths-sneak-peek-supergirl-tries-to-stay-hopeful-even-after-losing-spoiler-in-part-1/

“Crisis on Infinite Earths” will take no prisoners, as seen in this emotional sneak peek from Part 1 of the Arrowverse’s crossover event, which kicks off this Sunday at 8/7c on The CW’s Supergirl.

In the premiere of the five-part crossover, The Monitor (played by guest star LaMonica Garrett) sends Harbinger (Arrow’s Audrey Marie Anderson) to gather the worlds’ greatest heroes — including Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), The Flash (Grant Gustin), Green Arrow (Stephen Amell), Batwoman (Ruby Rose), White Canary (Caity Lotz), The Atom (Brandon Routh) and Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) — in preparation for the impending Crisis.

Said Crisis, though, will soon lay waste to another world. And in the exclusive sneak peek above, Kara explains to her cousin Clark how she can somehow remain hopeful, even after they suffer devastating losses. Press play to watch the emotional exchange.

“There’s a lovely scene between Clark and Kara on the balcony, when they’re talking about legacies and how they move on from the destruction of Argo City at the beginning of the hour,” Supergirl EP Robert Rovner noted at a recent press screening of Parts 1 and 2.

Teasing other combos/convos, Arrowverse EP Marc Guggenheim says Kara will also have a conversation that is “so, so resonant” in Part 2, with Kate Kane aka Batwoman. “Then they have a scene in Hour 3 that sort of pays off the cliffhanger of [Hour 2] that is phenomenal. Melissa and Ruby just blow the doors off the place.

“Similarly, also in Hour 3,” Guggenheim continues, “there’s a great scene from Grant Gustin and Cress Williams (as Black Lightning).”

Stan Lee working on NEW superhero Dirt Man before his death: Daughter hopeful for MOVIE https://briefnews.eu/stan-lee-working-on-new-superhero-dirt-man-before-his-death-daughter-hopeful-for-movie/ https://briefnews.eu/stan-lee-working-on-new-superhero-dirt-man-before-his-death-daughter-hopeful-for-movie/#respond Wed, 14 Nov 2018 14:41:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stan-lee-working-on-new-superhero-dirt-man-before-his-death-daughter-hopeful-for-movie/

Two days ago the 95-year-old creator of some of the world’s best-loved superheroes died.

Lee introduced the world to superheroes like the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk.

And now his daughter has revealed they had been working on a new one together.

Speaking with TMZ, she teased a superhero called Dirt Man.

The 68-year-old said: “I’ve been trying to get him to do a character with me my entire life.

“He did listen to me and we have been working on a new character called Dirt Man.

“The last little angel that we’ve got tucked away is Dirt Man.

“I said, ‘Daddy, please – no clatter, no steel, no any of that. Let’s get down and dirty.’

She continued: “And it is very interesting. It’s not over yet. We still have a little trickery.

But when it came to Dirt Man’s origin story and powers, JC Lee wasn’t ready to reveal, adding, “It is very interesting.”

TMZ asked: “Where is the project right now? Is it going to be made into a movie?”

She replied: “I hope so.”

Kiwis hopeful Bromwich will join them in time for Test https://briefnews.eu/kiwis-hopeful-bromwich-will-join-them-in-time-for-test/ https://briefnews.eu/kiwis-hopeful-bromwich-will-join-them-in-time-for-test/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 06:01:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kiwis-hopeful-bromwich-will-join-them-in-time-for-test/ MICHAEL Maguire has his fingers crossed that Jesse Bromwich won’t join the growing list of Kiwis forwards to be unavailable for this week’s trans-Tasman rugby league Test.

Former skipper Bromwich didn’t assemble with the New Zealand squad on Saturday, instead remaining with his family in Melbourne following the premature birth of his third child.

Kiwis coach Maguire told journalists he had been in regular contact with the influential Storm prop and expected him to join the Kiwis early this week and play in Saturday’s Test at Mt Smart Stadium.

“Obviously we hold the family side in high regard. So we’re looking after that part of having the little fella come into the world and I think Jesse should join us fairly soon,” Maguire said.

Having the 29-year-old’s services will bring solidity to a Kiwis pack rocked this week by three withdrawals.

Fellow Melbourne front rower Nelson Asofa-Solomona was ruled out with injury along with two players poised to make their Test debuts – Zane Tetavano and Corey Harawira-Naera.

Warriors trio Agatius Paasi, Isaiah Papalii and Peta Hiku were added to the 24-man squad. Forwards Paasi and Papali’i will make their debut if selected. Maguire will name his squad on Tuesday.

‘Fake news’ v ‘alternative facts’? Libertarian presidential hopeful on Facebook censorship https://briefnews.eu/fake-news-v-alternative-facts-libertarian-presidential-hopeful-on-facebook-censorship/ https://briefnews.eu/fake-news-v-alternative-facts-libertarian-presidential-hopeful-on-facebook-censorship/#respond Fri, 07 Sep 2018 05:37:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fake-news-v-alternative-facts-libertarian-presidential-hopeful-on-facebook-censorship/ Facebook’s strategy to provide “alternative facts” to combat “fake news” will only result in political censorship that will cater for the interests of the Democratic Party, the Libertarians’ presidential hopeful told RT.

The world’s largest social media platform is now focusing its efforts on serving millions of their users with “alternative facts,” Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday.

“In the case of misinformation, what we do is we refer it to third-party fact-checkers. We don’t think we should be the arbiter of what’s true, what’s false, and we think that’s really important,” she told the lawmakers examining alleged Russian interference in US elections. “If it’s marked as false, we dramatically decrease the distribution on our site, we warn you if you’re about to share it, we warn you if you have shared it, and importantly we show related articles next to that so people can see alternative facts.”

Puzzled by her choice of words, many tried to decipher the hidden meaning behind Sandberg’s “alternative facts.” But whatever the actual meaning behind the phrase, Facebook will simply continue to screen out political voices in favor of the Democratic Party, according to Arvin Vohra, 2020 presidential hopeful for the US Libertarian Party.

“Maybe it is a slip of the tongue, maybe it is something worse, but really what we’re seeing is somebody who is pretending to try to provide fair and balanced media and is instead just going along with the status quo that generally supports, by and large, the Democratic Party,” Arvin explained.

The company began fact-checking news on its social media platform last spring, with help from ‘independent’ third-party fact-checkers, including agencies such the Associated Press and AFP. However, if these entities are meant to tailor to “alternative facts,” they will often spread inaccurate information, Arvin believes, noting, for instance, that the Libertarian Party was hardly mentioned by the mass media during the last presidential race.

Twitter permanently bans Alex Jones and Infowars for ‘abusive behavior’

“Facts are facts. Alternative facts, as far as I know, are just lies. When you have someone who is talking about trying to provide balanced information and they are taking zero steps to correct large and huge imbalances in political media reporting, then it is really hard for us to take it seriously,” the politician said. “Right now, what we are seeing in the media is just inaccurate news. We’re seeing just basically huge important areas left out entirely.”

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal retirement claim made by Miami Open hopeful Pablo Carreno https://briefnews.eu/roger-federer-and-rafael-nadal-retirement-claim-made-by-miami-open-hopeful-pablo-carreno/ https://briefnews.eu/roger-federer-and-rafael-nadal-retirement-claim-made-by-miami-open-hopeful-pablo-carreno/#respond Thu, 22 Mar 2018 07:03:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/roger-federer-and-rafael-nadal-retirement-claim-made-by-miami-open-hopeful-pablo-carreno/

Federer and Nadal have dominated the sport for over a decade but Carreno thinks their time will soon be up.

The world No 19 is confident that once they hang up their rackets he will be able to challenge towards the top of the rankings.

The furthest Carreno has ever progressed in a Grand Slam is the French Open quarter-final last year.

Ahead of the clay court season, the 26-year-old is hoping to build up some momentum with success at the Miami Open, where he has been handed a first-round bye.

But Carreno has his eyes set further on down the line to the day that Federer and Nadal call time on their careers, if they ever do, he joked.

“It seems that they will never retire,” Carreno told Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.

“But I suppose there will be a day when they will have to stop playing and I will take advantage of those moments to be there

“That step from one generation to another to continue advancing positions.”

Carreno then explained how he hopes to break back into the top 10 this season

“Go back to at least the top 10, and from there dream big,” he added.

“Being among the top five, and then you will see when they start to retire Federer, Nadal, and these players who are older than me.

“We will see if the new generation that comes below, the Zverev, Shapovalov and Chung take over or give a little time so that players like me can continue climbing positions.”

  • Last week the trustees of bust bitcoin exchange Mt Gox said they had sold $ 400 million of bitcoin since the end of last year.
  • Bitcoin investors blamed the large sell orders for a slump in bitcoin’s price at the start of the year.
  • Many investors believe Mt Gox’s trustees can’t sell any more bitcoin until the next creditors meeting in September.
  • The expected pause in selling is helping bitcoin rally from recent lows.

LONDON — The price of bitcoin is rising against the dollar on Tuesday morning amid chatter among investors that a major seller is unlikely to continue to offload more bitcoin in the near future.

Bitcoin slumped last week after it emerged that the trustees of bankrupt Japanese exchange Mt Gox had sold bitcoin holdings worth $ 400 million since the end of last year.

NAFTA talks: Automakers hopeful Canadian compromise will avert disaster https://briefnews.eu/nafta-talks-automakers-hopeful-canadian-compromise-will-avert-disaster/ https://briefnews.eu/nafta-talks-automakers-hopeful-canadian-compromise-will-avert-disaster/#respond Sat, 27 Jan 2018 20:32:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nafta-talks-automakers-hopeful-canadian-compromise-will-avert-disaster/

MONTREAL — Auto industry officials fretting about hardline U.S. NAFTA demands with the potential to turn a globally integrated industry upside down now are hopeful that a Canadian compromise plan could avert disaster.

The officials, speaking to Reuters on the sidelines of NAFTA talks here, said strenuous lobbying efforts on behalf of the industry were starting to sink in with some key members of the Trump administration.

Automakers and their suppliers are worried that the U.S. demands will cause the 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement to collapse, or render its tariff-free benefits unusable. Either outcome would wreak havoc on supply chains that have auto parts and vehicles regularly crisscrossing North American borders

Industry trade groups have estimated that a full reversion to World Trade Organization tariff levels would cost the industry some $ 10 billion a year and cause the loss of up to 50,000 U.S. auto parts jobs.

The Trump administration, which blames NAFTA for killing off U.S. manufacturing jobs, wants the requirement for the value content, or net cost, of autos sourced from the three NAFTA countries boosted to 85 percent from 62.5 percent for tariff-free trade.

It also insists that 50 percent of the content of every vehicle produced in the region come from the United States, an option that Canada and Mexico have dismissed as unworkable.

In a bid to keep the talks alive Canada is now suggesting that North American content in autos — known as rules of origin — should be calculated to also include the value of software, engineering and other high-value work, which currently is not counted toward the regional content targets

The plan got a boost from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne on Thursday, who called it a “defensible” concept and a “step in the right direction.”

“Within the structure proposed by the Canadians, there appears to be the beginnings of a solution to this problem,” Marchionne said on an earnings conference call.

Canadian officials say their U.S. counterparts have asked a series of questions about how the plan would work. It is unclear how U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer will react to the plan when he arrives in Montreal on Sunday.

The current round of talks in Montreal is the penultimate in the negotiations to update NAFTA.

“I think I’m more optimistic now than I have been in quite some time, because we have an opportunity here for having a true dialogue on what a 21st century rule of origin for NAFTA might look like,” said Ann Wilson, senior vice president of government affairs at the Washington-based Motor and Equipment Manufacturers Association.

The industry fears that if North American content demands are set too high, manufacturers will simply forego NAFTA’s tariff-free access and pay low 2.5 percent U.S. tariffs on parts and passenger cars produced outside the region. The result could be less automotive production in the United States, not more, industry representatives say.

“We’re very appreciative of the Canadians putting forth some fresh new ideas. It’s a positive signal and hopefully a shift in the talks,” said Jennifer Thomas, vice president of federal government affairs at the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers,

Thomas, noting that U.S. domestic sales were expected to decline after a seven-year run that set records, added, “We’re kind of bracing for a downturn and we don’t need to have any additional burdens further harming the industry.”

John Bozzella, president of the trade group Global Automakers, said executives had pressed senior White House officials about the importance of NAFTA.

“I think those meetings have been impactful. They have gotten key players within the administration thinking about how the industry can remain competitive going forward in a way they hadn’t before,” he said.

Flavio Volpe, president of Canada’s Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association, said the Trump administration would not be selling out its base by agreeing to focus on the value of high-tech in autos.

“The science in specialized steel is as space ages as it is in app writing for vehicle operation. They’re smart enough to know they do really well in both,” he told reporters.
