With just one decision, Shaun and Lea’s lives were forever changed on Monday’s Good Doctor. When we last left off, Lea had just told Shaun that she was pregnant — and her portrayer, Paige Spara, tells TVLine that she was was particularly intrigued by the relationship twist. “I was excited to explore how Lea and Shaun would handle such abrupt news,” she tells TVLine. “Becoming pregnant has so many levels of emotions one goes through with themself and with their partner. To dive into something so deeply personal and life-changing is [compelling].” In the aftermath of the big reveal, the relatively new couple spent much of Season 4’s 12th installment, “Teeny Blue Eyes,” contemplating whether or not they were capable of bringing a child into this world. Lea talked through her doubts, first with Claire, then with Shaun, in a pair of delicate scenes, and realized that Shaun’s ASD, and whether it could potentially be inherited by their offspring, was not a determining factor in her decision. “I wanted to make sure I was speaking to all of the emotions Lea was feeling,” Spara says, which she talked through with both Freddie Highmore and executive producer David Shore. “I feel that’s important to convey — that all of these emotions can exist at the same time… [Lea] is genuinely trying to process not only her emotions, but what’s best for the baby and Shaun’s life as well.” What followed was an especially heavy moment between Shaun and Lea. They reconvened at their apartment and discussed their options moving forward. They ran down their respective lists of pros and cons, and acknowledged how complicated it would be to start a family. “I have so many reasons to do this… and so many doubts,” Lea explained. “I’m just scared, Shaun. But if we’re both having doubts, then maybe now isn’t the right time?” Shaun said “OK,” and took his girlfriend’s hand. There was nothing else that needed to be said in that moment. A decision had been made. A trip to a women’s health clinic ultimately resulted in a change of heart. In the episode’s closing moments, Lea decided that she couldn’t go through with the abortion. “I spent all day reminding myself of all the reasons why this was a good idea, but now that it’s actually happening, it doesn’t make me feel any better,” she said. “It just makes me feel really sad. Maybe it’s not the right time, but will it ever be?” With Shaun’s support, Lea decided to keep the baby — and together, they’d start a family. As for how the series will navigate Lea’s pregnancy in subsequent episodes, Spara would only say this: “In true Lea-and-Shaun form, we will be covering the experience true to the foundation of their relationship, which is [with] total honesty.” In a second, we’ll want to know what you thought of the episode — but first, a couple of other major developments worth discussing… OK, now it’s your turn! Shaun, meanwhile, broke the news to Dr. Glassman. The hospital head was happy for the young couple, but warned his surrogate son that having a child changes everything. Shaun also had some one-on-one time with Claire, who assured him that he’d adapt and grow to become a fantastic father, just like he did to become a surgeon.
“David Shore explored both Lea and Shaun’s emotions without it ever feeling unbalanced,” Spara says. She also credits the episode’s director, Rebecca Moline, for how this particular scene turned out. Moline was there “to navigate all the complexities we were trying to convey,” and “created such a safe space.” Along with Highmore, “Rebecca allowed me to find [what Lea was feeling] and hear my take on it first, respectfully. The wonderful thing about that is it creates an encouraging atmosphere… I felt very supported and encouraged by those two.”
* When Park admitted he had feelings for Morgan, she told him to pack his things and move out of her apartment. As he headed out, she gave him one last chance to admit he was just messing with her, but he couldn’t do that. His feelings are true. That’s when she told him it was good they were no longer roommates and kissed him! “This is a one-time thing… unless I change my mind,” she said. “So consider that an incentive.”
* Another newbie dropped out of the surgical program: At the end of the hour, Enrique decided he wasn’t O.R. material. He’d continue his residency at Johns Hopkins, where they’ll train him to head out into the world and help those in needy areas — much more his speed. Before he left, Dr. Guerin told Claire that she’s always doing so much for other people, and she needs to do something for herself every now and then. And so Claire returned home, climbed into bed and gathered information on a potential trip to Paris.

Breaking up with a narcissist can be very difficult. If they aren’t finished with you yet, they will plead you to stay. If you are trauma bonded to them, then their begging and false promises may well work.
It takes a great deal of strength to walk away because narcissists are such highly-skilled liars. They’ve been lying their whole lives, both to themselves and to others. They have an inflated sense of ego, which is a cover-up for their low self-esteem, and based on nothing but delusion.
Narcissists know exactly what tales to spin to keep you around out of shame or pity. They’re so convincing in their lies, they can make their victims feel like they are going crazy.
They’re also very good at coming up with excuses for their bad behaviour.
According to doctor of psychology Perpetua Neo, who works with the victims of narcissistic abuse, somebody who constantly explains away their actions without taking any responsibility may be a narcissist.
“Some of them say things like: I cannot help it, I’ve been so damaged, I need to drink, snort coke, whatever,” Neo told Business Insider. “That’s why I do that stupid behaviour, so you have to understand and forgive me. This means you have to absolve two kinds of behaviour — one the drinking or the substance abuse, and two the emotional abuse towards you.”
The whole point is to make you feel guilty for questioning their motives. For example, Neo says that if any of her clients brought up the fact their narcissistic partner was being unloving, cruel, or was doing something they didn’t think was appropriate, they would be met by fierce defence.
One of their favourite lines is “I’m so much better now,” because victims will often find narcissists claim to have had problems in the past, such as addictions or difficult ex-partners.
“They might say, for instance ‘I used to be a sex addict,'” Neo said. “Or ‘I used to be a sex addict and now I’m so much better.’ So whenever you see them slip, they will say they couldn’t help it.”
They might also bring up their past, and how much of a hard life they’ve had. You very rarely meet a narcissist who doesn’t claim to have had a difficult upbringing.
“They say ‘I’m only like that because of my past,’ or ‘because my mother hurt me,’ or ‘my father is the reason I am who I am,'” Neo said. “They’re always one step ahead of you.”
Narcissists are also furious if you don’t appreciate the tiny things they have apparently done. They expect praise for simply being a decent human being, and are insulted if they aren’t congratulated at every turn.
“They say, ‘don’t forget that one week where I drank less. You’re so ungrateful. Didn’t you see me try?'” Neo said. “The changes are very piecemeal and transient, but of course the narcissist is going to blow them all up, because he thinks everything he gives is a very big deal. They see it like currency”
Some narcissists will blame their behaviour on their friends, saying it’s just the culture they live in. Others will blame their partner for the behaviour, calling them crazy, and manipulating them into acting differently.
In the early days of an abusive relationship, narcissists love bomb their victims with attention and affection, while they pretend to be the best person in the world. It’s only once they are sure they have hooked their partner that their true self starts to shine through.
Sometimes, narcissists will play an extreme pity card by telling you they have a mental health condition, and you are a bad person for not excusing them as a result.
“They might say they have a substance abuse problem because they are depressed, or because they’re anxious,” Neo said. “My ex pulled out this whole borderline personality diagnosis on me. Borderline people are emotionally volatile because they can’t regulate their emotions. So he would say he was borderline therefore he was paranoid, therefore he didn’t like me talking to other people.”
Particularly twisted narcissists have also pretended to be ill to get what they want. One of Neo’s clients, for example, paid for her ex-husband to live in a huge house because he told her he had cancer.
Over time, narcissists become more sophisticated because they’re constantly learning tricks about how to manipulate people. That’s how they can get away with such exploitation.
Ultimately, the only thing you can do is get as far away from them as possible, Neo said. You should break away as soon as you know you are with someone who is incapable of empathy, and run far away.
The best revenge you can get is to live your life, learn from the experience, and grow as a result. Finding out you are stronger and happier without them drives narcissists mad.
“Even though he tried to destroy you, you’ve turned the tables and instead created an awesome life courtesy of the lessons from what he did to you. That will piss him off royally,” Neo said.

There’s an intriguing, vibrant story at the heart of FX’s new drama Snowfall. Unfortunately, there are also two other, less interesting stories that come along with it — and the show ends up OD’ing on an excess of ambition.
Snowfall, debuting this Wednesday at 10/9c, comes from co-creator/executive producer John Singleton, who immortalized the streets of South Central L.A. with his iconic ’90s film Boyz N the Hood. Here, he takes us to his old stomping ground a decade earlier, in the summer of 1983, when small-time weed dealer Franklin (Damson Idris) gets his first tantalizing taste of the cocaine trade. What Franklin and his friends don’t know, though, is that crack cocaine is about to hit their streets… and change those streets forever.
The visual style of Snowfall immediately commands your attention: Every frame is saturated with color, with lots of lens flare, swooping camera moves and quick cuts. (Plus, the show is set to a throbbing soundtrack of ’80s proto hip-hop classics.) Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah — a pair of Belgian filmmakers making a big leap to Hollywood here — helm the first two episodes and set a bold, inventive template for future episodes to follow. Even when the storytelling stumbles (and we’ll get to that in a minute), Snowfall is still a dazzling feast for the eyes.
Franklin’s story is a familiar one — a smart, resourceful kid discovers that crime does pay — but Singleton and co-creators Eric Amadio and Dave Andron (Justified) find a way to make it fresh. Idris, a British newcomer, is magnetic as Franklin, and Michael Hyatt (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) brings real warmth as Franklin’s hard-working mom Cissy. Franklin’s world is full of vividly drawn characters: his weed-slinging Uncle Jerome (Amin Joseph), who doesn’t want to mess around with coke; his hothead friend Leon (Isaiah John); his loose-cannon Israeli drug supplier Avi Drexler (Alon Moni Aboutboul), who enjoys shooting henchmen in the chest to test his bulletproof vests and rolling a bowling ball into rows of Champagne bottles… it’s all more than enough plot for one show to explore.
But Snowfall, unwisely, doesn’t just stop there. It tries to weave in two more stories on top of Franklin’s: a Mexican wrestler named Gustavo (Sergio Peris-Mencheta) who gets hired to be the muscle for a powerful crime family, and a CIA operative named Teddy (Carter Hudson) who strikes up a partnership with a Nicaraguan soldier. Neither story works as well as Franklin’s does; the CIA subplot, in particular, is drab and impenetrably dense, and not interesting enough for us to try to untangle. (The wrestler story at least has Breaking Bad alum Emily Rios, who’s very good as the crime lord’s no-nonsense daughter Lucia.)
The result is a show that’s far too scattered, and never builds any narrative momentum because it’s always cutting away to another plotline. It’s frustrating to get invested in Franklin’s story, only to shift focus to Gustavo or Teddy just when things are heating up. Singleton and his fellow writers seem to be going for a kaleidoscopic, Traffic-like saga about the advent of crack in America, but to pull that off successfully, all parts of the story need to be equally compelling, and here, they’re just not. Franklin’s story might someday intersect with Gustavo and Teddy’s in meaningful ways… but who wants to stick around long enough to find out?
Also, a word of warning to squeamish viewers: Snowfall vigorously pushes the boundaries of basic cable, with graphic depictions of violence, nudity and rape. And that, on top of the aforementioned visual flair, can make the show almost overwhelming to watch. Even Franklin’s adventures in the crime world feel a little too reminiscent of a shoot-’em-up video game like Grand Theft Auto, like he has to complete a series of missions before leveling up to Apprentice Coke Dealer. When the show leans on flashy style and shock value, we sometimes lose touch with the characters’ emotions and motivations, even Franklin’s.
Still, Franklin’s heart-pounding tale of ambition, powered by Idris’ performance, is nearly good enough on its own to make Snowfall worth watching. And I appreciate the refreshing jolt of new blood, with its rookie directors and cast of mostly unknown actors, that Snowfall brings to the TV scene. But the Gustavo and Teddy storylines muddy the narrative waters too much to justify a recommendation, even in these lean summer months. Like a greedy drug dealer, they cut their pure product with too much filler… and we’re ready to buy elsewhere.
THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: FX’s drug drama Snowfall boasts bold visuals and one compelling storyline, but the other subplots fall too flat to recommend it.

During Martin Shkreli’s federal trial this week for alleged securities and wire fraud, a former investor explained how she got involved with the now-infamous ex-pharmaceutical CEO and what followed. In short, she testified that she was swindled by Shkreli after he made big promises to overcharge vulnerable patients.
As lawyers painted dueling pictures of Shkreli as a con-man and a “strange” yet brilliant financial mind, the investor, Sarah Hassan, laid out a story from 2010 that started with buzz in the hedge-fund world. She described a smooth-talking Shkreli, false name-dropping, and a winning business plan of sticking it to patients with rare diseases.
After investing $ 300,000 in one of the hedge funds Shkreli managed at the time, Hassan put in another $ 150,000 into Shkreli’s then-new pharmaceutical company Retrophin. According to the New York Times, she described his successful business pitch like this: “You can make a lot of money on orphan drugs because the price per patient is quite high.”

The series follows Detective Annie Redford (played by Laura Fraser), who ends up in charge of her first murder case in a sleepy village that surrounds Loch Ness. But with a slow start to the first two episodes, people started to switch off from the Broadchurch-style show.
In a gradual build to its final nail-biting moments, The Loch’s third offering saw forensic psychologist Blake (Don Gilet) get in trouble for blurting out that the two murders were connected, and Annie frantically questioned a number of residents about the disappearance of local teenager Jonjo Patterson (Keiran Gallacher).
But as the mother-of-one rushed to get to the town hall for a meeting towards the end of the episode, it was suddenly revealed that the missing child was dead – as she found him stuffed in the back of a black van, to the shock of the other villagers.
Fans instantly took to Twitter to share their excitement at the development.
One person tweeted: “Love the Loch, I cant wait for next week. Gripping stuff! [sic]”
Another viewer couldn’t hide their excitement that the thriller had upped its game with the third episode, when they posted: “Omg the loch was good tonight. Cant wait for next week. Fearless tomorrow night. Loving these thriller detective series [sic].”
Meanwhile, a fan tweeted their appreciation of one of the show’s actresses, but admitted that the series was difficult to watch.
“I’ll watch anything with Siobhan Finneran in. Ditto Will Ash. But The Loch is scaring the heck out of me,” they said.
And a fourth viewer admitted that they found the whodunnit drama too complicated to unravel, saying: “Watching the loch and trying to work out who did it……i give up they all done it #TheLoch #nessie #myheadhurts”
The Loch continues Sunday at 9pm on ITV.

The smart, modern timber and Cotswold stone buildings
It is part of the Farncombe Estate, also home to two rather more exclusive establishments: Dormy House and Foxhill Manor.
This is the owners’ newest, cheap(er) addition and is a suitably chic accompaniment to its more established stablemates.
Sitting a short drive from the honey-coloured Cotswold town of Broadway, the hotel isn’t on a river or near the sea, so why the name?
Until it was demolished in the 16th century, the Benedictine monks of Pershore Abbey kept and cured their fish in caves dug into the hillside, leading to the nickname Fish Hill.
I’ve always been of the opinion that when holidaying on a budget you are better off spending your cash on the best room in a good hotel than taking in the cheapest on offer in a more luxurious one.
The Fish is the best example of this I’ve found. I stayed in one of four “Spacious” rooms (essentially a junior suite) in a block called, for obvious reasons, The Stables.

The rooms are Scandi in feel, with a palette that blends natural creams, greens and greys
They start from £195 per night and come with a super-king bed, Nespresso machine, roll top bath and Orla Kiely toiletries.
When The Fish opened in 2015 it positioned itself as “affordable not budget” and my goodness they have done it well.

I imagine someone flicking through the Farrow & Ball charts then heading to B&Q for a colour matching session.
As for the furnishings, there’s plenty of wood, leather and wool to make sure the rooms are cosy in winter and airy in summer.
Initially, The Fish offered a canteen-style restaurant experience with three choices for each course and a fridge you delved into yourself for dessert.
They’ve rethought things and now offer an à la carte menu.
Definitely the right move. Wild mushroom risotto with foraged herbs and lobster hotdog with chips are the stand-outs.
Best of all it retains a laid-back atmosphere in keeping with its Nordic decor.
There’s a terrace and a lovely conservatory in case the weather is a little dreary but you still want to feel like you are dining in the middle of the forest.

There’s plenty to do on the property itself. Take a Segway safari to tour the expansive estate, try clay pigeon shooting, quad biking and archery or improve your swing at Broadway Golf Club.
Head across the estate and indulge in a treatment in the spa at five-star Dormy House, or book a table in its Garden Room restaurant for some fine dining.
Want to go farther afield? From £20pp The Fish will pack you a delicious picnic (think Famous Five-style treats – ham sarnies, fizzy pop, great wedges of homemade cake and an apple or two).
Wondering where to take it? The 18th-century Broadway Tower is only a few minutes’ drive away and provides impressive views. Rainy day? Snowshill Manor is not to be missed.
The Tudor mansion is stuffed to the gills with the most eccentric collection of… collections. Samurai armour, penny farthings, toys from across the centuries and musical instruments you’ve never heard of.
“Let nothing perish” was 20thcentury owner Charles Wade’s motto and he really did mean it.
He moved next door into a small “Priest’s house” in order to accumulate a mind-boggling 22,000 objects of all shapes and sizes.
The pretty village of Snowshill featured in all the Bridget Jones films, while the surrounding fields are home to an insanely Instragram-able lavender crop, best seen in June and July.
