LIKE many Americans, Jonna Bianco believes President Donald Trump to be “a tireless defender of the American people against Chinese economic aggression”. Ms Bianco, a Tennessee cattle-rancher, is president of the American Bondholders Foundation (ABF), which represents more than 20,000 owners of bonds issued by Chinese governments before the Communist revolution in 1949—and which claims that American citizens are owed more than $ 750bn. Having met Mr Trump at his golf resort in New Jersey last month, Ms Bianco hopes he will press their case.
The ABF’s claim is built on the widely accepted doctrine that governments inherit their predecessors’ debts. Pre-Communist Chinese governments flooded international markets with debt, such as a £25m (then $ 122m) issue of “gold loan” bonds in 1913. “As a legal matter, those debts still exist,” notes Mitu Gulati of Duke University. “But so too does the statute of limitations.”

The writer, from Norfolk, plays the role of home-maker while husband Patrick goes out to work.
She said: “Being called a housewife is not old-fashioned – it’s a badge of honour.
“The beauty of the modern world we live in is that we as women now have the choice.
“Being a housewife is still a very important role in a lot of households, and if it is their choice and what works best for their family, then surely it is the right choice.
“My husband and I made the decision together that when our daughter was born in 2014 that I would leave employment and become a full-time mother and housewife.
“It suited us financially as my wages at that time would have paid for only childcare, plus it suited us personally too. I didn’t want anybody else looking after Savannah or teaching her things, I wanted to do it all.
“I feel blessed being a housewife, that I have made all of those memories and done so much with her.
“I have friends who had no choice but to return to work after having a baby and we have had countless conversations about special events they have been unable to attend, or that they simply feel they have missed out on spending precious time with their children.
“I will always be proud to have been a housewife, and whatever path my career takes next, nothing will ever change that.
“I have cherished the four years I have spent at home bringing up my daughter and am proud of the young lady she has become because of my hard work.”
Factory workers, bus drivers and Mayor John Tory were among thousands of Torontonians who donned jerseys Thursday to show their support for the community of Humboldt, Saskatchewan.
It was last Friday evening when a bus carrying the Humboldt junior A Broncos hockey team collided with a truck in rural Saskatchewan, killing 16 players and staff.
The tragedy has resonated deeply with Canadians. A record amount of money has been raised for those affected. And as a tribute, countless households and businesses placed hockey sticks outside their front doors.
Now the Jerseys for Humboldt campaign is another way for Canadians to show their support for a reeling Saskatchewan community.
The idea actually started thousands of kilometres away from the accident, in Langley, B.C.
“This tragedy is so unfathomably huge that no one person can do anything but as a group we wanted to contribute something,” said Jennifer Pinch, one of the organizers of this campaign.
“I think everyone just wants to give something. It’s the least we can do. I wish I could take their pain and put it on my shoulders for a day for them.”
The idea started off small.
“It started off as let’s take a picture of our sons in their jerseys and send it to the moms in Saskatchewan to let them know we were thinking of them and that would be it,” explained Pinch.
“And then it was why don’t we get Langley minor hockey involved. Then why not schools across B.C. Then the Facebook page went up and it really just took off.”
It certainly did. Under the Twitter hashtag #jerseysforhumboldt, there are thousands of pictures of people wearing jerseys, posted from across the country.
“Just something to let that team know they are not alone. People are behind them because anybody could have been that team, God forbid, in the future.”
The idea was certainly popular in Canada’s biggest city, especially in Toronto schools, where thousands of students wore jerseys for Humboldt.
At Hillcrest Community School in midtown Toronto, a wide array of jerseys and colours were on display.
Many, like Grade 6 student Logan Kennedy decided to wear something special.
“I am wearing my Mississauga Reps jersey. I think it shows them more support than wearing a regular jersey,” he said.
Kennedy, who plays competitive hockey, said he’s been thinking a lot about what happened in Humboldt.
“I thought it was so sad what happened in Humboldt and eye-opening too. Just how you could be going somewhere and feeling so happy and then things vanish just like that and you can have nothing.”
Kennedy’s classmate Sabine Therrien wore her Hillcrest softball jersey.
“I hope to send the message that even though they are not with us anymore that they will live and everyone is thinking of them.”
There were plenty of Leaf jerseys, of course, including on worn by Suleimaan Omar.
“I was really sad because hockey is my favourite sport and lots of people I know play. They were doing something they really liked and then an accident happened.”
Their teacher, Ahren Sternberg, who coaches many of the school’s teams, said this accident has struck a chord among his students.
“Anyone here could have been on that bus. These guys play sports they travel, it could be anyone and that thought alone is something that really hit home,” said Sternberg. “And if wearing jerseys gets us thinking and talking about it, it’s not a bad thing.”
Pinch said it’s likely the families and community in Humboldt are looking inward right now, dealing with a tragedy that is still very raw.
“They may not notice this for a month or even a year, but they will know that in their dark, dark time, there was a worldwide community supporting them and it will be nice to know that they weren`t alone as they probably feel right now.”

“To use a hockey analogy, we’ll stickhandle our way through this and hopefully we won’t have to dump it in the corner and we’ll get to the net,” said Muench.

An overflow room for the event had already filled up by 6:30 p.m. CST.
Muench said his phone has been flooded with calls and texts from complete strangers offering the community support in the wake of the crash.
“Just a number and an area code from I don’t even know where saying, ‘We’re with you, we’re behind you, here’s a poem I wrote, here’s a song.”
Muench’s phone rang several times during a press conference held Sunday to announce details of the vigil.

Winnipeg Jets and Chicago Blackhawks players wore the word ‘BRONCOS’ on the back of their game jerseys in place of their own names to honour the victims and survivors of the fatal bus accident Friday involving Saskatchewan’s Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team.
There was a moment silence as the teams stood together in a circle at centre ice before Saturday’s 4-1 victory for Winnipeg.
“It was a very sombre mood on the ice, kind of one of those things where it could have been any one of us,” Copp said.
“You kind of count your blessings. You kind of look to the guy to your left and right, they’re not usual teammates or brothers, but you feel that sense of camaraderie and community with them.”
Teams across the league held similar ceremonies and wore decals with the Broncos’ logo on their helmets.
Earlier in the day, Winnipeg head coach Paul Maurice also extended his “deepest sympathies” on behalf of himself and the Jets’ organization. “Such a horrific situation, hits so very close to home for all of us,” Maurice said.
“We grieve with you.”
Connor Hellebuyck was proud to know a list of NHL records will now include his name.
Andrew Copp scored twice and Hellebuyck set an NHL record for most wins in a season by an American goaltender
The 24-year-old Commerce, Mich., goalie made 30 saves to pick up his 44th win (44-11-9), surpassing Tom Barrasso’s 1992-93 feat with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“To be in the history books is something that I’m always going to look back and be proud of,” said Hellebuyck. “The fact that this locker room has come together, playing the way we’re playing, now the city is behind us the way they are, it’s a fun time being in Winnipeg.”
Hellebuyck also tied the NHL record for most wins at home by a goaltender in a single season with 30. Wayne Stephenson of the 1975-76 Philadelphia Flyers had the same tally.
Dustin Byfuglien and Kyle Connor also scored for the Jets (52-20-10), who have won five straight and a franchise-record nine in a row at Bell MTS Place.
Winnipeg opens the NHL playoffs next week at home against the Minnesota Wild.
Jeff Glass stopped 35 shots for the Blackhawks (33-39-10), who didn’t make the playoffs for the first time since 2007-08.
Brent Seabrook scored Chicago’s lone goal.
“It sucks,” Seabrook said. “I’ve said [to the media] a million times, I think it’s the best part of the season coming up here. To not be a part of it, not playing any meaningful games for us down the stretch, it’s been tough.”
Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp got a standing ovation in the third period after the announcer told the crowd the 36-year-old is retiring after 14 NHL seasons, 11 with Chicago.
“Being born in Winnipeg and then hearing the ovation from the crowd, seeing the other team tap their sticks and clap their hands, that hit hard and I’m just thankful for it, grateful for it,” Sharp said.
Winnipeg had mounted a 4-0 lead by early in the second period.
Byfuglien began the onslaught when he scored 13 seconds into a two-man advantage with a high blast from the point at 15:12 of the first period.
Connor beat Glass on a breakaway 34 seconds into the second. It was his 31st goal of the season, which leads all NHL rookies.
Copp put in his eighth and ninth of the campaign, the second a short-handed goal, to make it 4-0 at 6:35.
Seabrook stopped the shutout with a screened shot at 9:08 of the second.
The Jets, who relocated from Atlanta in 2011, also set franchise records for wins (52), points (114) and home wins (21).

His success in winning two flags and playing 179 games between 2003 and 2014 was remarkable considering he only took up Aussie Rules at the age of 14 and had played less than 50 games before making his debut at AFL level.
He became known as a grand final specialist starring in the 2005 win over the West Coast Eagles and backing it up with another strong performance against Hawthorn in 2012.

One of their 2012 premiership heroes, Nick Malceski has also been honoured after his match winning goals against the Hawks were added to the club’s heritage list.
Malceski booted the club’s first and last goals in the epic match.
His second, a snap shot from 20 metres out with just 40 seconds left on the clock sealed the victory.
Malceski is now a development coach with the Gold Coast Suns.

Queen remain one of the greatest British and global bands of all time.
With a back catalogue ingrained in the national consciousness and record sales estimated at up to 300million, they have not always generated the same reverence in the US. The 1984 video for I Want To Break Free was a humorous parody of Coromation Street, with the boys dressed in drag. European audiences loved it and got the joke. US stations including MTV banned the video.
23 years later Queen are being recognised with American music’s highest honour.
Tina Turner remains a living inspiration at 78. Her personal, public and professional lives are a triumph of overcoming adversity. Along the way she has achieved legendary status for her life story as much as her incredible presence on stage, screen and record.
She sold more concert tickets than any solo performer and her combined record sales top 180 million.
Turner’s story will also be celebrated in the new musical, which starst previews in London’s West end at the Aldwytch Theatre on March 21.
This year the Grammys Lifetime Achievement Award honourees also include Hal Blaine, Neil Diamond, Emmylou Harris, Louis Jordan and the Meters.
Diamond has been recording since the 1960’s and has had hits in every decade since then as well as starring the movie The Jazz Singer.
Emmylou Harris is a pioneer of pop, folk, country and alternative music.
Louis Jordan’s posthumous honour recognises his popularity from the late 1930s to the early 1950s as the King of the Jukebox. The American musician, songwriter, and bandleader helped pioneer the sound of rock and was dubbed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the Father of Rhythm & Blues and the Grandfather of Rock and Roll.
“As a kid growing up in Italy, I always dreamed of my jersey hanging in the Lakers’ rafters, but I certainly never imagined two of them,” Bryant said.
“The Lakers have bestowed a huge honour on me and I’m grateful for the fans’ enthusiasm around this game.”

The Lakers are pulling out all the stops in honouring one of the club’s greats. They will raise both of the numbers Bryant wore while with the team — eight and 24 — in his two-decade career, all of which was spent with the Lakers.
Bryant, who retired in 2016, scored 33,643 points, the third-most in NBA history behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone.
The five-time NBA champion will become the 10th Lakers player to have his number retired, joining Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Gail Goodrich, Magic Johnson, Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, James Worthy, Jerry West and Jamaal Wilkes.
In addition to the halftime ceremony, the Lakers will host a Bryant-themed street festival outside Staples Center dubbed “Kobeland”.
“When it happens, it’ll be a little bit emotional,” Lakers coach Luke Walton said of the jersey ceremony.
But Walton, who won two titles with Bryant as a player, said that as the game approached he would be “thinking 99.5 per cent about our chances of how to beat the Warriors”.
Golden State star Kevin Durant said his favourite memory of playing Bryant was when his Oklahoma City Thunder eliminated Bryant and the Lakers in the second round of the playoffs in 2012.
“That was a proud moment, playing so well, and finally beating his team in the playoffs,” Durant said. “So I can say that I won in one-on-one against Kobe in the playoffs. Not too many people can say that.
“But he does have five championships,” Durant added.
The judging panel said the North Queensland Cowboys co-captain used his profile to help others, particularly Indigenous people, reach their potential.
He champions Achieving Results Through Indigenous Education (ARTIE), is the face of Synapse’s campaign to prevent acquired brain injury in the Aboriginal community, and is an ambassador for the Apunipima Cape York Health Council’s anti-ice campaign.
He is also an ambassador for the Queensland Reconciliation Awards and actively supports the Beanies for Brain Cancer initiative.
This year, Thurston helped launch the $ 9.5 million NRL Cowboys House, a home for 50 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from remote north Queensland.
More to come.
